Bedrock is inhomogeneous for its genetically diverse origins and geological conditions when it forms, and especially, conglomerates and core-stones are one of these typical composite geo-materials composed of weak matrixes and strong pebbles. Mechanical properties of these composite bedrocks, like a conglomerate, generally vary depending on the mechanical properties and distributions of pebbles and the matrix. Therefore, regarding the consequence of understanding mechanical property of bedrocks in the designing slopes, tunnels, and other engineering facilities, empirical rock classification methods generally applied in the mechanical property modeling may not be suitable and rather, we may need some other classification methods, or tests more specific for these inhomogeneous composite bedrocks. This study includes a series of analyses to see elastic behaviors and modulus of composite geo-materials using homogenization theory. Forty nine case models were made for the elastic analysis with considering 5 factors such as gravel content, gravel size, strength of matrix, sorting and dip angle. The results analyzed are applicable to calculate elastic modulus of composite geo-materials as conglomerates and core-stones.

A reliability based design approach of the tunnel reinforcement with umbrella arch method was considered to better represent the uncertainties of the weak rock properties around the tunnel. For this, a machine learning approach called an Adaptive Support Vector Machine (ASVM) together with the limit equilibrium method were introduced to minimize the iteration numbers during the classification training of the tunnel stability. The proposed method was compared with the results of typical Monte Carlo simulations. It was concluded that the ASVM was very efficient and accurate to calculate the probability of failure having auxiliary umbrella arches and uncertain material properties of the tunnel. Future work will be concentrated on the refinement of the fast adaptation of the SVM classification so that the minimum number of numerical analyses can be used where the limit solution is not available.

The soil does not only serve as a medium for plant growth but also for engineering construction purposes. It is very weak in tension, very strong in compression and fails only by shearing. The behaviour of the soil under any form of loading and the interactions of the earth materials during and after any engineering construction work has a major influence on the success, economy and the safety of the work. Soils and their management have therefore become a broad social concern. A limitless variety of soil materials are encountered in both agronomy and engineering problems, varying from hard, dense, large pieces of rock through gravel, sand, silt and clay to organic deposits of soft compressible peat. All these materials may occur over a range of physical properties, such as water contents, texture, bulk density and strength of soils. Therefore, to deal properly with soils and soil materials in any case requires knowledge and understanding of these physical properties. The desired value of bulk density varies with the degree of stability required in construction. Bulk density is also used as an indicator of problems of root penetration, soil aeration and also water infiltration. This property is also used in foundation engineering problems. While not conforming to standard test procedures, this work attempts to add to the basic information on such important soil parameters as water content, bulk density.
Recently resistivity survey is widely used for site investigations in the field of civil engineering. Since such application area requires accurate interpretation tools especially in the area of complicated geology and rough terrain topography, we developed a three-dimensional (3-D) resistivity inversion code, which can reconstruct real earth structures. Furthermore, the inversion code gives resolution-enhanced images by applying the ACB(Active Constraint Balancing) method. With the help of this inversion code, 3-D resistivity survey is now used as new techniques for site investigations in civil engineering problem. By imaging the 3-D resistivity distribution, we could get useful informations such as depth distribution of basement rock, distribution of weak zone, fractures and cavities which is crucial to civil engineers.
Recently, large and deep excavations are increasing. The damage of adjacent structures due to excavation has steadily increased with increasing construction demand. Especially in urban development and poor conditions, the excavation adjacent to the subway structures has caused a lot of problems. This paper was reviewed that the underground excavation and reinforcement of the status process through a case study on the field. And stability analysis through the case study evaluates applicability for reasonable reinforcement method by numerical analysis. As a result, the strata distribution condition of all 16 sites consisted of landfill from the top and distributed in the order of deposits, weathered soils, weak rock from the bottom. Also, when proceeding the excavation adjacent to structures, the location of site and layer conditions have highly effect on the results of the construction. Therefore, this study was applied reinforcement method to protect damage by excavation. Displacement and settlement were within allowable criterion and hence, stability of structure was analyzed as safe.

In submerged floating tunnels (SFTs), a next-generation maritime transportation infrastructure, the tunnel module floats in water due to buoyancy. For the effective and economical use of SFTs, connection with the ground is inevitable, but the stability of the shore connection is weak due to stress concentration caused by the displacement difference between the subsea bored tunnel and the SFT. The use of an elastic joint has been proposed as a solution to solve the stability problem, but it changes the dynamic characteristics of the SFT, such as natural frequency and mode shape. In this study, the finite element method (FEM) was used to simulate the elastic joints in shore connections, assuming that the ground is a hard rock without displacement. In addition, a small-scale model test was performed for FEM model validation. A parametric study was conducted on the resonance behavior such as the natural frequency change and velocity, stress, and reaction force distribution change of the SFT system by varying the joint stiffness under loading conditions of various frequencies and directions. The results indicated that the natural frequency of the SFT system increased as the stiffness of the elastic joint increased, and the risk of resonance was the highest in the low-frequency environment. Moreover, stress concentration was observed in both the SFT and the shore connection when resonance occurred in the vertical mode. The results of this study are expected to be utilized in the process of quantitative research such as designing elastic joints to prevent resonance in the future.
The steel pipe of steel-concrete composite drilled shafts increases the pile strength and induces the ductile failure by constraining the deformation of the inner concrete. In this research, pile loading tests were performed to analyze the field applicability of a steel-concrete composite drilled shafts. The test ground consisted of 5~7 m thick soil underlying rock mass. The test piles consisted of two steel-concrete composite drilled shafts, which were the concrete filled steel pipe piles with the diameter of 0.508 m, and a concrete pile with the same diameter. The test results showed that the boundary between the upper steel composite section and the lower concrete section was structurally weak and needs to be reinforced by using a inner steel cage. If the boundary is located in deep depth, which is not influenced by lateral load, the allowable strength of the lower concrete section increases, so an economical design can be performed by increasing the design load of steel-concrete composite drilled shafts.
The present microbial reinforcement of rock and soil exhibits limitations, such as uneven reinforcement effectiveness and low calcium carbonate generation rate, resulting in limited solidification strength. This study introduces electroosmosis as a standard microbial grouting reinforcement technique and investigates its solidification effects on microbial-reinforced uranium tailings. The most effective electroosmosis effect on uranium tailings occurs under a potential gradient of 1.25 V/cm. The findings indicate that a weak electric field can effectively promote microbial growth and biological activity and accelerate bacterial metabolism. The largest calcium carbonate production occurred under the gradient of 0.5 V/cm, featuring a good crystal combination and the best cementation effect. Staged electroosmosis and electrode conversion efficiently drive the migration of anions and cations. Under electroosmosis, the cohesion of uranium tailings reinforced by microorganisms increased by 37.3% and 64.8% compared to those reinforced by common microorganisms and undisturbed uranium tailings, respectively. The internal friction angle is also improved, significantly enhancing the uniformity of reinforcement and a denser and stronger microscopic structure. This research demonstrates that MICP technology enhances the solidification effects and uniformity of uranium tailings, providing a novel approach to maintaining the safety and stability of uranium tailings dams.
While China's military rise is an issue of growing importance to regional security, it is worthwhile to note that it is not China's military modernization per se, but its capacity to project and sustain power along and beyond its borders--in particular, the possibility to resolve forcefully its outstanding maritime disputes and various contingencies. This essay argues that China's "anti-access capability"--a U.S.-coined term originally developed for a Taiwan contingency--is equally applicable to other major regional cases such as the Spratly disputes and a North Korean contingency. Furthermore, notwithstanding China's continuos efforts to develop and deploy various types and classes of weapons/platforms, it is the Russian systems and technologies that are most capable and thus likely assigned to the highest mission-critical areas. In assessing China's current and likely future military capability as well as their implications for the region, it is necessary to take note of the following: • There exists asymmetry of military capability between China and its weaker neighbors. While the PLAN is weak in several important aspects, for instance, many of its neighbors' navies are weaker still. • Some have argued that China's foreign policy behavior apparently became more "assertive" in 2009-2013, but it is wiser to keep in mind that China has almost always been assertive and aggressive when it comes to what China defines as "sovereignty and territorial issues" as well as its newest "core interests." • On the South China Sea disputes it is the function of U.S. presence in the theater--in the form of overseas bases and the freedom of navigation--and the PLA's own limitations to project and sustain power for an extended period of time that have largely prevented armed. • While Taiwan remains the idee fixe of China's diplomacy and military, it is and will be a tough nut to crack. China's recent creeping attempts for economic integration with Taiwan should be seen in this context. • China and Japan, the two regional heavyweights and traditional rivals, will likely have a bilateral relationship that is replete with difficulties and tension. China's unilateral announcement of its ADIZ in November 2013 as well as the occasional yet persistent disputes with Japan over the Senkaku/Diaoyudao/Diaoyutai islands are only the latest manifestation of this deeper and difficult relationship. • For Korean security it is imperative to take into account the geostrategic and historical factors. On top of the existing military threats from North Korea, the ROK should be able to employ a) hedging strategy, b) "limited defense sufficiency" strategy, and c) rock-solid relations with the United States.
Yeongweol sericite deposit of Gangwon Province is regarded as one of the sericite deposits derived from granitic rocks due to post-magmatic alkali metasomatism, and the other sericite deposit of the same origin is the Daehyun mine of Gyungbug Province. Sericite ores were originated from leucocratic granitic stocks of Cambrian-Triassic age which intruded the pegmatitic migmatite of the unknown age and granite of the Pre-cambrian age, respectivcly. Jangsan quartzite of the lowermost formations of the Paleozoic era, which played as the capping rock protected from the leakage of the hydrothermal solution. It is well known that those sericite deposits arc formed during formation of the geosyncline, and they are also situated in the margins of the Hambaeg Syncline. Leucocratic granites commonly contain pegmatites with tourmaline crystals, and are rich in potassium feldspars, and sodium plagioclase as well. Sericitized ores are mainly found as we go up to the higher elevations or to the margins of the stocks. And some of the Highest grade sericite ores show the monominerallic character composed of nearly pure sericite probably doc to the ultra greisenization. Chemical analysis shows higher $Na_{2}O$ and $K_{2}O$ contents $(2.00\sim7.03wt%)$ as the sericitizations arc preceded and they represent obvious greisenization. But low CaO contents $(0.05\sim4.51wt%)$ indicate that albitizations are so weak. Pyrophyllite of the Youngweol area is often accompanied by the sericite, indicating rather stronger thermal effect than the Daehyun mine. It is known that there are several Sn deposits originated from greisenization in the Taebaegsan region. And greisens are inclined to contain W, Mo and several REE's such as Be, Nb and Li, and so Taebaegsan region interbedded with lots of carbonate formations are still worthwhile to survey for those metallic deposits.
