  • Globally there is an increasing need to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions and increase the use of renewable sources of energy. The storage of solar thermal energy is a crucial aspect for implementing the solar energy for space heating in high latitudes, where solar insolation is high in summer and almost negligible in winter when the domestic heating demand is high. To use the solar heating during winter thermal energy storage is required. In this paper, equations representing the single U-tube heat exchanger are implemented in weak form edge elements in COMSOL Multiphysics(R) to speed up the calculation process for modelling of a borehole storage layout. Multiple borehole seasonal solar thermal energy storage scenarios are successfully simulated. After 5 years of operation, the most efficient simulated borehole pattern containing 168 borehole heat exchangers recovers 69% of the stored seasonal thermal energy and provides 971 MWh of thermal energy for heating in winter.

  • Electrical resistivity survey (2D and 3D) were employed for detection of possible weak zone of core zones of three central core earth-rockfill dams in Korea. In the 2D results, the core zones is lower resistivity zone with less than $50{\sim}400ohm{\cdot}m$, and the basement is relatively higher resistivity zone with over $1,000ohm{\cdot}m$. In the 3D results, especially, the weak zone with under $100ohm{\cdot}m$ was detected spatial distribution area in the dam. We also drilled boreholes to collect soil samples of core zones of each dam. Water was not used during boring, because water for rotary wash boring could cause structural damages in earth dams. We found that the soil samples of core zones from all of the boreholes correspond to CL (USCS), but we also found that the fluidized or water-saturated soil samples were found in lower resistivity zones. Therefore, the electrical resistivity survey and drilling method without water are a quick and efficient method for structural-health evaluation which is detection of possible weak zones in earth core rockfill dams.

  • New Songdo city is currently developing on the reclaimed land on a marine deposit and among the development the four sixty-four(64) stories high rise buildings are under construction at block 125. The ground condition of the site is comprised of a deep seated weathered rock staratum under a soft marine deposit layer. As a foundation system, a bored pile was planned to transmit the applied load to the stable layer. In this study, the behavior of the weathered rock especially locating at a upper part having a weak strength(HWR, MWR) has been evaluated through series of hi-directional pile load test(BD PLT) carried out on the 3 drilled shafts socketed in a weathered rock layer in a design stage. It has been planned to increase the effect of the tests that the length of test piles was prepared short enough to perform the test under a high stress. The summary of the design reflecting the test results has been made up. In addition, the 4 hi-directional pile tests excuted on the working piles during the construction stage for the purpose of confirmation and the evaluation of the adequacy of the pile behaviors have been included in this study.

  • The purpose of this study is to present an analysis method for the prediction of the change of ground conditions. To this end, three-dimensional convergence displacements is analyzed in several ways to estimate the trend of displacement change. Three-dimensional arching effect is occurred around the unsupported excavation surface including tunnel face when a tunnel is excavated in a stable rock mass. If the ground condition ahead of tunnel face changes or a weak fracture zone exists a specific trend of displacement change is known to be occurred from the results of the existing researches. The existence of a discontinuity, whose change in front of the tunnel face, can be predicted from the ratio of L/C (longitudinal displacement at crown divided by settlement at crown) etc. Therefore, the change of ground condition and the existence of a fracture zone ahead of tunnel face can be predicted by monitoring three-dimensional absolute displacements during excavation, and applying the methodology presented in this study.

  • In order to evaluate the physical properties of rock which might serve as a database for both mining and civil works, a lot of laboratory tests for Jecheon limestones were conducted to find unit weight, absorption ratio, porosity, elastic wave velocity, uniaxial compressive strength, Young's modulus, poisson's ratio, tensile strength, shore hardness, friction angle and cohesion. On investigation of the mechanical properties of both the gray limestone and the clayey limestone distributed in the studied region, the clayey limestone turned out to have more weak mechanical properties which might come from low unit weight, high absorption ratio and high porosity of rocks. The failure criteria of Jecheon limestones were discussed by means of both Mohr-Coulomb criterion and Hoek-Brown criterion. Regression analyses of the physical properties obtained from a lot of laboratory tests were also conducted by means of both linear and multiple regression analyses.

  • Goryeong Yangjeondong Petroglyph on the joint face of the bedrock (6m in width, 3m in height) composed of the green sandstone has circles and shield pattern sculptures. The rock is mainly composed of quartz, feldspar, chlorite, illite and calcite with the clay minerals. These clay minerals occur as pore lining, replacement of component and pore fillings. Investigated the weathering aspects including the connection between soluble salt and rock weathering and the stability of the bedrock with petroglyphs. The Major deterioration aspect are grain peel-off, surface exfoliation, cracks and damage. And the bedrock where the joints and cracks advance is interpreted with the fact that has the possibility of the falling rock. For conservation, adhesive need to cover crack and damage and consolidation is necessary in the surface which becomes weak.

  • Hydraulic fracturing is the key technology for production of shale gas, which is one of the major unconventional resources. Brittleness index is one of the most important mechanical properties which determine the efficiency of hydraulic fracturing. It was required that the production of shale gas increases with more brittle behavior. Confusingly, there are numerous definitions available for brittleness of rock. This paper summarizes various definitions of brittleness index, and presents correlation analysis of the brittleness indices by using the laboratory experimental results of 48 shale specimens in Korea. Generally, it shows a very weak positive correlation between the brittleness index ($B_1$) which is the ratio of uniaxial compressive strength to tensile strength and the brittleness index ($B_3$) which is calculated by using the Youngs modulus and Poisson's ratio. In addition, the role of Poissons ratio is not clear in defining brittleness indices. In conclusion, standardization of definition for brittleness index is required to apply it to hydraulic fracturing as a parameter for predicting the efficiency.

  • When filling material such as clay is included along the discontinuity, it may cause instability on a slope even if the direction of discontinuity works in a positive way. In the study area, slope sliding occurred at the boundary between a clay filling material and weathered soil because the physical properties differ across the boundary; and this is very similar to the situation where foliation in a rock works as a weak zone during a structural behavior, causing an inter-layer slip. In most analysis, if there exists a clay filling material, a single discontinuity is assumed to perform analysis. In those cases, the discontinuity is modeled as a slip surface within clay. Therefore, the characteristics of the boundary are not considered in the analysis, so that ultimately the physical property of clay usually prevails. The result of evaluating the slope stability affected by clay filling material shows the significant difference in the safety level due to the strength parameter depending on the failure type of the discontinuity by a filling material.

  • In this study, a field test was conducted to present a test method for performance evaluation of a rock fall prevention fence, centering on the vertical drop test among the existing test methods of the rock fall prevention fence. A test to determine the support capacity of a rockfall prevention fence in Korea is usually conducted using a combination of wire mesh, poles, and wire rope, and the location of the impact of falling rocks has been conducted centered on the center of the wire mesh. However, in the case of domestic papers and test data, there is no data on direct hit of post. Therefore, the amount of displacement and weak section were analyzed when the impact on 100kJ class rock energy was hit on the post, centering on the Rockfall Protection fence (highway type No. 2).

  • As the demand for urban underground space increases recently, urban tunnel planning is actively progressing. In the urban area, a underground station is planned in consideration of the living environment of residents, and 2-arch tunnel is applied for the stability of existing structures and reduction of environmental damage. However, since the depth of weak rock mass is deeply distributed in the urban area due to severe weathering, careful planning is required to secure tunnel stability. In addition, if TBM mechanical excavation is applied as the main tunnel excavation method considering the composite ground in urban area, the construction connectivity with the 2-arch tunnel of the NATM concept may be deteriorated. In this study, the design case of applying TBM pre-excavation type 2-arch tunnel for the first time in Korea was mainly described. The main considerations for the segment design of TBM pre-excavation type 2-arch tunnel were explained for side tunnels. Also, a stability analysis was conducted to verify the effectiveness and adequacy of the TBM pre-excavation type 2-arch tunnel.
