  • Wavelength tunable, narrowbandwidth wvelength filters in compound semiconductor have been modeled, fabricated, and characterized. In order to obtain a narrow bandpass characteristics at 1.55.$\mu$m, a highly asymmertrical directional coupler structure composed of a strongly guided ridge waveguide and a weakly guided strip-loaded waveguide was used. The optimized filter structure modeling has been obtained by using the spectral index method, effective index method, and the coupled mode theory. Operation at a center wavelength a 1.537.mu.m with a bandwidth of 1.8nm and transfer efficiency of 50-70% is experimentally achieved. For the purpose of center wavelength tuning, the carrier injection in p-n diode structure has been theoretically investigated. It has been found that the tuning range of nanometer can be easily obtained by moderate amount carrier injection. We also found that the bandwidth becomes broad as the center wavelength tuning increases.

  • We propose a new method for tuning of center wavelength in photorefractive filter using $LiNbO_3$ crystal doped with 0.015Wt.% Fe. through the filter bandwidth property analysis using the geometrical method, a new wavelength selectivity theory was presented. In this scheme, the tuning of the center wavelength can be achieved by the real time incident angle control of the received heam, which was gotten by the spatial light modulator. So, tuning time depend on the response time of the SLM and results in the high speed turing. Because the use of thermally fixed grating in our filter, it has uniform diffraction property to the all filtering wavelength. Designed tunable filter has 4nm bandwidth and composed of the three channel with 10nm space. From the optical experiment, we get the 4.5nm, 4.25nm, 4nm bandwidth and 1530.5nm, 1540.5nm, 1549.5nm center wavelength respectively.

  • This study reports a portable and precision photonic biosensor reader that can measure the concentration of a particular antigen using an optical resonant reflection biosensor (ORRB). To create a compact biosensor reader, a compact tunable vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) and a compact built-in wavelength meter were manufactured. The wavelength stability and accuracy of the compact built-in wavelength meter were measured to be less than 0.02 nm and 0.06 nm, respectively. The tunable VCSEL emission wavelength was measured with the compact built-in wavelength meter, it has a fast sweep time (~ 10 seconds) and a wide tuning range (> 4 nm) that are sufficient for biosensor applications based on ORRB. The reflection spectrum of a plastic based ORRB chip was measured by the fabricated portable photonic biosensor reader using the VCSEL and wavelength meter. Although the reader is the size of a palmtop device, it could make a precise measurement of the peak wavelength on equal terms with a conventional bulky optical spectrometer.

  • Technology development toward the use of LiNbO3-based acoustic tunable filters as WDM 2$\times$2 cross-connect switches is reviewed. Recenly, it was found that a fundamental behavior of multi-wavelength Bragg scattering critically affects the crosstalk performance of the acousto-optic tunable filter. We revuew serveral reported methods of overcoming the performance degradation. We will eventually ask whether the device is up to task of WDM optical switching.

  • This paper presents a design methodology for magnetically tunable X-band E-plane type waveguide filters. The proposed design is based on using of quarter wavelength transmission line for compensating the negative length transmission line of end K-inverters of E-plane type waveguide filters. The derived formulae are applied for initial design and the correction method is also provided for final design by considering the frequency dependent characteristic of K-inverters. The analysis results of E-plane pype waveguide structure loaded with ferrite slab are obtained using the edge based finite element method including higher order mode effecets. It is shown that the unilateral finline E-plane type waveguide filter as well as the bilateral finline E-plane type waveguide filter achieves the the manetically tunable characteristic. The X-band experimantal results for bilateral and unilateral finline E-plane type waveguide filters agree well with the simulated data.

  • Acousto-optic tunable filter is a compact, all solid state electronic dispersive device. It is based on the acousto-optic interaction in an anisotropic crystal. Compared to conventional grating monochromators. the AOTF has no moving parts, wider spectral tuning range (from UV through visible and near-IR to IR), higher throughput, higher resolution, faster scanning (${\mu}s$) and random wavelength access. These features make it possible to use the filter to develop novel instruments which are not possible otherwise. The instrument development and unique advantages of such AOTF based instruments including the multidimensional fluorimeter, the multiwavelength thermal lens spectrometer, and the detectors for HPLC and flow injection analysis are described.

  • An acousto-optic tunable filter based 3-D micro surface profile measurement using an equally spaced 5 spectral phase shifting is described. The 5-bucket spectral phase shifting method is compared with a Fourier-transform method in the spectral domain. It can provide a fast measurement capability while maintaining high accuracy since it needs only 5 pieces of spectrally phase shifted imaging data and a simple calculation in comparison with the Fourier transform method that requires full wavelength scanning data and relatively complicated computation. The 3-D profile data of micro objects can be obtained in a few seconds with an accuracy of ${\sim}10nm$. The 3-D profile method also has an inherent benefit in terms of being speckle-free in measuring diffuse micro objects by employing an incoherent light source. Those simplicity and practical applicability is expected to have diverse applications in 3-D micro profilometry such as semiconductors and micro-biology.

  • We report the physical implementation of a tunable photonic microwave delay line filter based on injection locking of a single Fabry-Perot laser diode (FP-LD) to a reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA). The laser generates equally spaced multiple wavelengths and a single tapped-delay line can be obtained with a dispersive single mode fiber. The filter frequency response depends on the wavelength spacing and can be tuned by the temperature of the FP-LD varying lasing wavelength. For amplitude control of the wavelengths, we use gain saturation of the RSOA and the offset between the peak wavelengths of the FP-LD and the RSOA to decrease the amplitude difference in the wavelengths. From the temperature change of total $15^{\circ}C$, the filter, consisting of four flat wavelengths and two wavelengths with slightly lower amplitudes on both sides, has shown tunability of about 390 MHz.

  • This paper describes a newly designed multipoint process monitoring system based on a NIR acousto-optic tunable filter. The NIR multipoint process monitoring system consists of a NIR AOTF device for wavelength selection, an InGaAs array sensor, and a specially designed iin-line type of optical fiber probe. Unlike a FTS(Fourier Transform Spectrometry) or grating based monitoring system, an AOTF has no moving parts, and it can be rapidly tuned to any wavelength in its operating range within microseconds. Thus, the AOTF is advantageous in terms of faster spectral imaging capability and rigidity required for industrial monitoring environment. In the current feasibility evaluation, an enhanced optical fiber probe with 3 monitoring points was used. However, ...
