In this study, we propose a W-band frequency modulated continuous wave(FMCW) radar altimeter that can measure the altitude based on the frequency differences of transmitted and received signals. This W-band FMCW system is powered by an altitude control algorithm, which we propose to help prevent collisions of drones with obstacles in real deployment by measuring the relative altitude. It is shown that this algorithm enables the drone to be positioned within a 3 % error of altitude from the desired input height. The chip used in the W-band transmitter and receiver was fabricated using a 65-nm CMOS process, and a horn antenna was directly fed by incorporating an embedded waveguide feeder into the chip. The clutter spectra observed in terrains including soil, grass, and calm lake water were measured and compared, confirming the reflectivity characteristics of various surfaces of different water contents.

In this paper, a design method for a compact CPW-fed slot antenna using SRRs(split-ring resonators) is studied. The structure of the proposed slot antenna is a rectangular slot antenna loaded with SRR conductors inside the slot to reduce the antenna size. Optimal design parameters are obtained by analyzing the effects of the gap between the SRR conductors and slot, and the width of the SRR conductors on the input reflection coefficient characteristic. The optimized compact slot antenna operating at 2.45 GHz band is fabricated on an FR4 substrate with a dimension of 36 mm by 30 mm. The length of the proposed compact slot antenna is reduced by 14.3% compared to that of a conventional rectangular slot antenna. Experiment results show that the antenna has a desired impedance characteristic with a frequency band of 2.4-2.49 GHz for a VSWR < 2.
In this paper, the design process and method for a compact wideband loop antenna for terrestrial digital TV (DTV) and ultra high definition (UHD) TV applications was proposed. Horizontal slits were added on the two circular sectors of the proposed loop antenna in order to miniaturize the existing wideband loop antenna consisting of a square loop and two circular sectors. A CPW transmission line was inserted in the center of the lower circular sector as a feed line. The CPW feed line was designed using the 75 ohm port impedance for DTV and UHD TV applications, and a tapered center-signal line was designed to improve the impedance matching. The final designed antenna was fabricated on an FR4 substrate with a thickness of 0.8 mm. The experiment results show that the proposed compact loop antenna operates in the frequency band of 444.3-820.1 MHz for a VSWR < 2, which fully covers the DTV and UHD TV bands.

For the purpose of Application to the small radar sensor, the MMIC Chips, which are the core component of the W-band, was designed in Korea according to the characteristics of the transceiver and manufactured by 60nm GaN and 0.1㎛ GaAs pHEMT process. The output power of PA is 28 dBm at center frequency of W-band and Noise figure is 6.7 dB of switch and LNA MMIC. Output power and Noise figure of MMIC chips developed in domestic was applied to the transmitter and receiver module through W-band waveguide low loss transition structure design and impedance matching to verify the performance after the fabrication are 26.1~27.7 dBm and 7.85~10.57 dB including thermal testing, and which are close to the analysis result. As a result, these are judged that the PA and Switch and LNA MMICs can be applied to the small radar sensor.

We measured the thickness and refractive index of a thin film using a double-slit diffraction experiment. The amount of phase step in the transmitted light generated by the thin film on the transparent substrate was measured by analyzing the diffraction pattern from the double slits. Experiments were conducted not only in air but also in distilled water, to determine thickness and refractive index simultaneously. To verify the validity of this method, we compared our values for thickness and refractive index to those measured using the well-established waveguide-coupling method. The suggested method is expected to be applied as a new method to simultaneously measure the thickness and refractive index of thin films, along with existing methods.

In this paper, we propose a multi-band small antenna with CPW(Coplanar Waveguide) feeding structure WLAN(Wireless Local Area Network) and WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) bands. The proposed antenna is designed two slit in the modified monopole type radiator and FR-4 substrate, which is thickness 1.0 mm, and the dielectric constant is 4.4. The size of proposed antenna is 15.1 mm⨯16.41 mm, and total size of proposed antenna is 17.5 mm⨯16.4 mm. From the fabrication and measurement results, From the fabrication and measurement results, bandwidths of 439 MHz (2.06 to 2.499 GHz), 840 MHz (3.31 to 4.25) and 1,315 MHz (5.23 to 6.545 GHz) were obtained on the basis of -10 dB impedance bandwidth. Also, 3D radiation pattern characteristics of the proposed antenna are displayed and measured gains 2.24 dBi, 2.83 dBi, and 2.0 dBi shown in the three frequency band, respectively.
Passive source depth estimation has been studied for decades since the source depth can be used for target classification, target tracking, etc. The purpose of this paper is to solve the problem of ambiguity in the previous paper [S.-il. Cho et al. (in Korean), J. Acoust. Soc. Kr. 38, 120-127 (2019)] that source depth is estimated in two points. The patterns of phase shift of Channel Impulse Response(CIR) reflected in ocean surface and bottom is used for removing ambiguity of the source depth estimation, and after removing ambiguity, source depth is estimated at one point through the intersection of CIR. In order to extract CIR in case of unknown source signal and continuous signal or noise, Ray-based blind deconvolution is used. The proposed algorithm is demonstrated through numerical simulation in ocean waveguide.

A study of miniaturization of an L-band orthomode transducer(OMT) for field experiments of radar backscatter is presented in this paper. The proposed OMT is not required the additional waveguide taper structures to connect with a standard adaptor by the newly designed junction structure which bases on a waveguide taper. Total length of the OMT for L-band is about 1.2 ${\lambda}_o$(310 mm) and it's a size of 60 % of the existing OMTs. And, to increase the matching and isolation performances of each polarization, two conducting posts are inserted. The bandwidth of 420 MHz and the isolation level of about 40 dB are measured in the operating frequency. The L-band scatterometer consisting of the manufactured OMT, a horn-antenna and network analyzer(Agilent 8753E) was used STCT and 2DTST to analysis the measurement accuracy of radar backscatter. The full-polarimetric RCSs of test-target, 55 cm trihedral corner reflector, measured by the calibrated scatterometer have errors of -0.2 dB and 0.25 dB for vv-/hh-polarization, respectively. The effective isolation level is about 35.8 dB in the operating frequency. Then, the horn-antenna used to measure has the length of 300 mm, the aperture size of $450{\times}450\;mm^2$, and HPBWs of $29.5^{\circ}$ and $36.5^{\circ}$ on the principle E-/H-planes.

In this paper, a new radiating structure with a multi-layered two-dimensional metallic disk array was proposed for shaping the flat-topped element pattern. It is an infinite periodic planar array structure with metallic disks finitely stacked above the radiating circular waveguide apertures. The theoretical analysis was in detail performed using rigid full-wave analysis, and was based on modal representations for the fields in the partial regions of the array structure and for the currents on the metallic disks. The final system of linear algebraic equations was derived using the orthogonal property of vector wave functions, mode-matching method, boundary conditions and Galerkin's method, and also their unknown modal coefficients needed for calculation of the array characteristics were determined by Gauss elimination method. The application of the algorithm was demonstrated in an array design for shaping the flat-topped element patterns of $\pm$20$^{\circ}$ beam width in Ka-band. The optimal design parameters normalized by a wavelength for general applications are presented, which are obtained through optimization process on the basis of simulation and design experience. A Ka-band experimental breadboard with symmetric nineteen elements was fabricated to compare simulation results with experimental results. The metallic disks array structure stacked above the radiating circular waveguide apertures was realized using ion-beam deposition method on thin polymer films. It was shown that the calculated and measured element patterns of the breadboard were in very close agreement within the beam scanning range. The result analysis for side lobe and grating lobe was done, and also a blindness phenomenon was discussed, which may cause by multi-layered metallic disk structure at the broadside. Input VSWR of the breadboard was less than 1.14, and its gains measured at 29.0 GHz. 29.5 GHz and 30 GHz were 10.2 dB, 10.0 dB and 10.7 dB, respectively. The experimental and simulation results showed that the proposed multi-layered metallic disk array structure could shape the efficient flat-topped element pattern.
POF(Polymer optical fiber) offers advantages of lighter, inexpensive, and easier to use over GOF(glass optical fiber). Its higher transmission loss and low bandwidth, however, make it suitable only for short distance networking such as LAN. The polymer materials and its synthesis technology of low transmission loss and the broader application for flexible POF are the two of many critical areas to be investigated more. In the current study, low-noise POF modules are developed and optimized with a low noise amplifier and low cost LED of 650 nm. In order to demonstrate the dynamic characteristics of the POF module for optical communication and sensing, we have built an image transfer module, optical transmission speed measurement module, optical transceiver for RS-232, and sound-transfer module, and the signal characteristics of them are evaluated. It is found that the module can be readily used for a quick and simple measurement of optical transfer speed. With help of analog amplifier, LED, and PD, sound and image transfers through a maximum 60 m optical waveguide have been confirmed. Real-time data transfer was also demonstrated in PID control, which is thought to be valuable to industrial plant design and control.
