Seismic base isolation has been accepted as one of the most popular design procedures to protect important structures against earthquakes. However, due to lack of information and experimental data the application of base isolation is quite limited to nuclear power plant (NPP) industry. Moreover, the effects of inelastic behavior of soil beneath base-isolated NPP have raised questions to the effectiveness of isolation device. This study applies the wavelet analysis to investigate the effects of soil-structure interaction (SSI) on the seismic response of a base-isolated NPP structure. To evaluate the SSI effects, the NPP structure is modelled as a lumped mass stick model and combined with a soil model using the concept of cone models. The lead rubber bearing (LRB) base isolator is used to adopt the base isolation system. The shear wave velocity of soil is varied to reflect the real rock site conditions of structure. The comparison between seismic performance of isolated structure and non-isolated structure has drawn. The results show that the wavelet analysis proves to be an efficient tool to evaluate the SSI effects on the seismic response of base-isolated structure and the seismic performance of base-isolated NPP is not sensitive to the effects in this case.
An experimental research has been carried out for flow control of the shock wave/turbulent boundary-layer interaction utilizing aeroelastic mesoflaps. Various shapes and thicknesses of the mesoflap are tested to achieve different deflections of the flap, and ail the results are compared to the solid-wall reference case without flow-control mechanism. Quantitative variation of skin friction has been measured downstream of the interactions using the laser interferometer skin friction meter, and qualitative skin friction distribution has been obtained by observing the interference fringe pattern on the oil-film surface. A strong spanwise variation in the fringe patterns with a narrow region of separation near the centerline is noticed to form behind the shock structure, which phenomenon is presumed partially related to three-dimensional flow structures associated with both the sidewalls and the bottom test surface. The effect of the shape of the cavity is also observed and it is noticed that the shape of the cavity is not negligible.

An analysis considering the fluid-structure interaction is required to strictly evaluate the seismic behavior of facilities such as, environmental facilities and dams, that store fluids. Specifically, in the case of an infinite domain in the upstream direction, such as a dam-reservoir system, this should be carefully considered. In this study, we proposed a practical numerical model for both wave propagation and fluid-structure interaction analyses of an infinite domain, for a system with a semi-infinite domain such as a dam-reservoir system. This method was applicable to the time domain, and enabled accurate boundary analysis. For an infinite fluid domain, a small number of mid-point integrated acoustic finite elements were applied instead of a general acoustic finite element, and a viscous boundary was imposed on the outermost boundary. The validity and accuracy of the proposed method were secured by comparing analytic solutions of a reservoir having infinite domain, with the parametric analysis results, for the number of elements and the size of the modeling region. Furthermore, the proposed method was compared with other fluid-structure interaction methods using additional mass.
Radiation damping due to wave propagation in unbounded domains may cause a significant reduction of structural vibrations when excited near resonance. Here a novel matrix-valued algebraic Pad$\acute{e}$-like stiffness formulation in the frequency-domain and a corresponding state equation in the time domain are elaborated for a soil-structure interaction problem with a layered soil excited in a transient manner by a flexible rotor during startup and shutdown. The contribution of radiation damping caused by a soil-layer upon a rigid bedrock is characterized by the corresponding amount of critical damping as it is used in structural dynamics.
In this study, a simplified three-dimensional calculation model is developed for the dynamic analysis of soil-pile group-supertall building systems excited by wind loads using the substructure method. Wind loads acting on a 300-m building in different wind directions and terrain conditions are obtained from synchronous pressure measurements conducted in a wind tunnel. The effects of soil-structure interaction (SSI) on the first natural frequency, wind-induced static displacement, root mean square (RMS) of displacement, and RMS of acceleration at the top of supertall buildings are analyzed. The findings demonstrate that with decreasing soil shear wave velocity, the first natural frequency decreases and the static displacement, RMS of displacement and RMS of acceleration increase. In addition, as soil material damping decreases, the RMS of displacement and the RMS of acceleration increase.

In this paper, the method for soil-structure interaction analyses in the time domain is proposed. The far field soil region which is the outside of the artificial boundary is modeled by using explicit frequency-dependent two dimensional infinite elements which can include multiple wave components propagating into the unbounded medium. Since the dynamic stiffness matrix of the far field soil region using the proposed infinite elements is obtained explicitly in terms of exciting frequencies and constants in the frequency domain, the matrix can be easily transformed into the displacement unit-impulse response matrix, which corresponds to a convolution integral of it in the time domain. To verify the proposed method for soil-structure interaction analyses in the time domain, the displacement responses due to an impulse load on the surface of a soil layer with the rigid bed rock are compared with those obtained by the method in the frequency domain and those by models with extend finite element meshes. Good agreements have been found between them.
In this paper decay and mapped elastodynamic infinite elements, based on modified Bessel shape functions and appropriate for Soil-Structure Interaction problems are described and discussed. These elements can be treated as a new form of the recently proposed Elastodynamic Infinite Elements with United Shape Functions (EIEUSF) infinite elements. The formulation of 2D horizontal type infinite elements (HIE) is demonstrated, but by similar techniques 2D vertical (VIE) and 2D corner (CIE) infinite elements can also be formulated. It is demonstrated that the application of the elastodynamical infinite elements is the easier and appropriate way to achieve an adequate simulation including basic aspects of Soil-Structure Interaction. Continuity along the artificial boundary (the line between finite and infinite elements) is discussed as well and the application of the proposed elastodynamical infinite elements in the Finite Element Method is explained in brief. Finally, a numerical example shows the computational efficiency of the proposed infinite elements.
Displacement response and corresponding maximum response energy of structures are key parameters to assess the dynamic effect or even more destructive structural damage of the structures. By employing them, this research has compared the structural responses of jacket supported offshore wind turbine (OWT) subjected to seismic excitations apprehending earthquake incidence, when (a) soil-structure interaction (SSI) has been ignored and (b) SSI has been considered. The effect of earthquakes under arbitrary angle of excitation on the OWT has been investigated by means of the energy based wavelet transformation method. Displacement based fragility analysis is then utilized to convey the probability of exceedance of the OWT at different soil site conditions. The results show that the uncertainty arises due to multi-component seismic excitations along with the diminution trend of shear wave velocity of soil and it tends to reduce the efficiency of the OWT to stand against the ground motions.
In the present paper it is aimed to perform the stochastic dynamic analysis of fluid and fluidstructure systems by using the Lagrangian approach. For that reason, variable-number-nodes twodimensional isoparametric fluid finite elements are programmed in Fortran language by the authors and incorporated into a general-purpose computer program for stochastic dynamic analysis of structure systems, STOCAL. Formulation of the fluid elements includes the effects of compressible wave propagation and surface sloshing motion. For numerical example a rigid fluid tank and a dam-reservoir interaction system are selected and modeled by finite element method. Results obtained from the modal analysis are compared with the results of the analytical and numerical solutions. The Pacoima Dam record S16E component recorded during the San Fernando Earthquake in 1971 is used as a ground motion. The mean of maximum values of displacements and hydrodynamic pressures are compared with the deterministic analysis results.

The optimal parameters for the fluid-structure interaction analysis using the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) for fluids and finite elements for structures, respectively, are explored, and the effectiveness of the simulations with those parameters is validated by solving several open surface fluid problems. For the optimization of the Equation of State (EOS) and the simulation parameters such as the time step, initial particle spacing, and smoothing length factor, a dam-break problem and deflection of an elastic plate is selected, and the least squares analysis is performed on the simulation results. With the optimal values of the pivotal parameters, the accuracy of the simulation is validated by calculating the exerted force on a moving solid column in the open surface fluid. Overall, the SPH-FEM coupled simulation is very effective to calculate the fluid-structure interaction. However, the relevant parameters should be carefully selected to obtain accurate results.
