Several observational results show a tighter pitch angle at wavelengths of optical and near-infrared than those that are associated with star formation, which is in agreement with the prediction of the density wave theory. In my recent numerical studies, the dependence of the shock positions relative to the potential minima is due to the tendency that stronger shocks form farther downstream. This causes a systematic variation of the perpendicular Mach number, with radius and makes the pitch angle of the gaseous arms smaller than that of the stellar arms, which supports the prediction of the density-wave theory, independently. However, some observations still give controversial results which show similar pitch angles at wavelengths, and there is no statistical study comparing observations and numerical models directly. By analyzing optical image of disk galaxies in the Carnegie-Irvine Galaxy Survey (CGS), I measured the physical values of stellar and gaseous arms such as their strength, length, and pitch angles. For direct comparison with numerical results, I analyzed more than 30 additional numerical models with varying the initial parameters in model galaxies. In this talk, I will present results both of observational and numerical samples and discuss the physical properties of spiral structures based on the density-wave theory.
The performance of a multi-level overtopping wave energy converter (OWEC) has been numerically and experimentally investigated in a two-dimensional wave tank in order to study the effects of opening width of additional reservoirs. The device is a fixed OWEC consisting of an inclined ramp together with several reservoirs at different levels. A particle-based numerical simulation utilizing the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) is used to simulate the flow behavior around the OWEC. Additionally, an experimental model is also built and tested in a small wave flume in order to validate the numerical results. A comparison in energy captured performance between single-level and multi-level devices has been proposed using the hydraulic efficiency. The enhancement of power capture performance is accomplished by increasing an overtopping flow rate captured by the extra reservoirs. However, a noticeably large opening of the extra reservoirs can result in a reduction in the power efficiency. The overtopping flow behavior into the reservoirs is also presented and discussed. Moreover, the results of hydrodynamic performance are compared with a similar study, of which a similar tendency is achieved. Nevertheless, the LBM simulations consume less computational time in both pre-processing and calculating phases.

This study explored the product attributes Vietnamese mothers consider for the purchase of children's wear, the differences of product attributes between groups with different levels of conspicuous consumption, and the extent to which the Korean wave affects the purchasing behavior of children's wear brands. The results are as follows. First, the product attribute that Vietnamese mothers consider most when purchasing children's clothes is the comfort in physical activities. Fabric type and quality, sizing and fit, durability, color, child suitability, design, cutting and construction, price, fashionability, and maintenance and laundering are the other attributes (respectively) that influence the purchase of children's wear. Second, the high conspicuous consumption group considers brand, maintenance and laundering, durability, the reactions of others, and fashionability significantly more than the low conspicuous consumption group. Third, the purchase intention of Korean children's wear brands is affected by the perception of the Korean wave than the influence of the reference group or the tendency of conspicuous consumption. The results show that low prices and practicality were important considerations for children's clothing purchases by Vietnamese mothers; however, brand name and fashionability were more powerful predictors for the high conspicuous consumption group. Those with a high perception of the Korean wave also had a higher intention of Korean children's wear brand, which is indicative of the halo effect of the Korean wave. Thus, Korean children's wear brands that plan to enter the Vietnamese market should make active use of the Korean wave.

802.11p WAVE is the next-generation wireless communication that can make Ad-hoc network communication possible for Vehicle-to-Vehicle. GBSR protocol, one of the 802.11p WAVE protocols, mainly focuses on improvements in networks that have a tendency to disconnect. However, it does not consider the transmission time and velocity of a packet thus, there is a disadvantage of there being a delay in the transmission velocity, in urgent situations like car accidents, emergency patients transportation and crimes. In this paper, we proposed A-GBSR protocol for transmission of a packet to mobile node which has a high speed through the improved beacon message and Adaptive Neighbor list Management that are considering of the GBSR protocol transmission velocity.

This paper presents a Monte-Carlo FDTD technique to determine the scattered field from a perfectly conducting surface like a sea surface, from which the useful information on the incoherent pattern tendency could be observed. A one-dimensional sea surface used to analysis scattering was generated using the Pierson-Moskowitz model. In order to verify the numerical results by this technique, these results are compared with those of the small perturbation method, which show a good match between them. To investigate the incoherent pattern tendency involved, the dependence of the back scattering coefficients on the different wind speed(U) is discussed for the back scattering case.

This study projected the future ocean wave climate changes based on global climate change scenario using the coupled climate model HadGEM2-AO according to the emission scenarios and using regional wave model. Annual mean significant wave height (SWH) is linked closely to annual mean wind speed during the forthcoming 21st Century. Because annual mean speed decreased in the western North Pacific, annual mean SWH is projected to decrease in the future. The annual mean SWH decreases for the last 30 years of the 21st century relative to the period 1971-2000 are 2~7% for RCP4.5 and 4~11% for RCP8.5, respectively. Also, extreme SWH and wind speed are projected to decrease in the future. In terms of seasonal mean, winter extreme SWH shows similar trend with annual extreme SWH; however, that of summer shows large increasing tendency compared with current climate in the western North Pacific. Therefore, typhoon intensity in the future might be more severe in the future climate.

This study conducted hydraulic testing to assess the stability of two types of pyramid-shaped artificial reefs (ARs) constructed to promote the growth of shellfish and seaweed. Previous theoretical and hydraulic experimental studies have clearly demonstrated Froude similitude. The results of this study revealed that some dimensionless design parameters affected the stability of both types of artificial reefs under various wave and current field conditions (e.g., surf similarity parameters, water particle velocity, wave pressure). In the fixed bed condition, the dimensionless water particle velocity based on the surf similarity parameter was large (about 0.4), and in the moveable bed condition, the relative water depth based on the dimensionless wave pressure was low (about 0.11). In addition, horizontal wave pressure and uplift pressure varied by relative water depth, demonstrating the tendency for wave pressure to decrease linearly with increased relative depth. These findings indicate that the development of more stable design technology forartificial reefs should be based on long-term data and additional study of sliding due to wave action. The findings also highlight the importance of hydraulic experiments in solving problems that have emerged in the design and construction of artificial reefs.

An experimental investigation has been made to study the interaction between and incident oblique shock wave and an unstabilized turbulent boundary layer on a solid surface downstream of a porous surface with air injection through the porous surface. The boundary layer upstream of the interaction is unstabilized by the injection and provokes a shock wave which eventually interacts with the unstabilized boundary layer after reflecting from the upper wall of the test section. Three cases having diferent upstream Mach numbers and different shock strengthes are studied. According to the level of the unstabilization, two cases are of attached boundary layers and the other one is of a separated boundary layer. The result shows that the reflected wavey system is composed of the compression wave, expansion wave fan, and recompression wave like the ordinary interaction while the separated boundary layer strengthens the reflected expansion waves. The interactions of the attached boundary layers show a similar tendency of the upstream wall pressure distribution as that of the ordinary interacton but the pressure rise rather decays in the downstream region. In case of the separated boundary layer, the wall pressure continues to rise in the downstream as opposed ot the former cases. This indicates that the interaction region spreads out widely adn the viscous effect of the separated boundary layer smoothens the abrupt pressure increase due to the shock inpingement.

We studied the characteristics of spatial distribution of global wave height and carried out the modelsensitivity test by changing the input field, model resolution and physical factor (effective wind factor) since the spatial and temporal resolution in wind wave forecasting is one of most important factors. Comparisons among the different cases, and also between model, buoy and satellite data have been made. As a results of the wind-wave model run using the high resolution wind field, the bias of significant wave height showed the positive tendency and the Root-Mean Square Error(RMSE) was a bit decreased based on the comparison with buoy data. When the model resolution was changed to higher, the bias and RMSE was increased, and as the effective wind factor was smaller than default value(= 1.4) the bias and RMSE showed also decreasing pattern.

Numerous research papers have been accumulated due to the development and computerization of bibliometrics. This made it difficult to review all of the related papers published worldwide to conduct the study. However, due to the development of Natural language processing techniques, the tendency analysis of published research papers has become easier. In this study, text mining analysis using the statistical computing language R was carried out based on the bibliographic information of SCOPUS DB (Data Base) in the field of coastal and ocean engineering. As expected, the term 'wave' predominates, and it was confirmed that numerical analysis and hydraulic experiments were still dominant from the terms 'numerical model', 'numerical simulation', and 'experimental study'. In addition, recent use of the term 'wave energy' related to marine energy has been recognized. On the other hand, it was quantitatively confirmed that the frequency of connection between 'wave', and 'height' or 'energy' prevailed, and suggested the possibility of high resolution analysis by detailed field and period in the future.
