We herein propose a new design procedure of a flexible container ship model where the vertical bending and torsional vibration modes are similar to its prototype. To achieve similarity in torsional vibration mode shapes, the height of the shear center of the model must be located below the bottom hull, similar to an actual container ship with large opening decks. Therefore, we designed a ship model by imparting appropriate stiffness to the hull, using urethane foam without a backbone. We built a container ship model according to this design strategy and validated its dynamic elastic properties using a decay test. We measured wave-induced structural vibrations and present the results of tank experiments in regular and freak waves.

The safety and stability of 5MW class offshore wind turbine Jack-up platform was investigated through ocean basin experiment. For simulating the environmental condition of yellow sea in the South Korea, diverse waves, winds and currents were performed based on Froude's number. Regular wave and irregular wave based on Froude's number were applied to the wind turbine structure. In experiments, the height and period of regular wave type were scaled down as the 1:50 ratio of real wave condition. Irregular wave type was simulated with TMA(Texel Storm, Marsen and Arsloe)spectrum. The vertical reaction force, resonance period and wave pressure applied to multi-supporters of wind offshore structure were measured experimentally. Finally, the results showed that the capsizing situation of the offshore structure was generated by the severe environmental condition.
In this paper, breaking waves are generated in a 2-D wave tank and simulated by using a higher-order boundary element method. A piston-type wavemaker is operated by signals composed of elementary waves. The phase of elementary waves is determined by the linear theory such that they are focused to a prescribed position. Calculated plunging waves coincide well with experiment. A steel box with different plate thicknesses is installed at a predetermined position in the tank. Measured impulsive pressures due to breaking waves are found to be 0.8-1.2$\rho$C2, where $\rho$ corresponds to water density and C to wave celerity. The transverse displacement of the plate is described in terms of modal eigenfunctions. The natural frequencies measured by impact tests in air for thin plate coincide with the computational and theoretical values. The radiationpotential due to plate vibration is derived and the radiation force is expressed in terms of hydroelastic added mass and damping forces. Comparison of natural frequencies of plate in water proves that hydroelastic added mass and damping are properly considered. The measured strain due to regular waves supports the calculated one, but there are apparent discrepancies between theory and experiment in the impulsive case.

Recently, as the offshore structures are operated in the deep-sea oil fields, interest in the analysis of relative wave elevation around platforms is increased. In this study, it is examined how the analysis results differ depending on the characteristics of the wave probe when interpreting the relative wave elevation in the model test. First, by conducting the wave probe comparison experiment in the two-dimensional wave tank, it is confirmed how the measured values differ according to the type of wave probe for the same physical phenomenon. Two types of wave probe are selected, the resistance type and the capacitance type, and the causes of the difference in measured values is studied. After that, the model test of the semi-submersible platform is conducted to investigate the relative wave elevation. Relative wave elevation is measured with the wave probes used in the wave probe comparison experiment and analyzed to estimate the asymmetric factor and the extreme upwell. The results between the two types of wave probes are compared, and qualitative study for the cause of the difference is conducted by photographing the physical phenomenon using a high-speed camera. Through the above study, it is confirmed that the capacitance type wave probe shows a larger measured value than the resistance type under the breaking-wave condition, and the same results are obtained for the asymmetric factor and the extreme upwell. These results is thought to be due to the difference in the measurement principle between wave probes, which is whether or not they measured water bubbles. This implies that the model test should be conducted using appropriate wave probes by considering the physical phenomenon to be analyzed.
An experimental study was carried out in order to understand the kinematics of bichromatic waves. Bichromatic waves are generated in a two-dimensional wave tank, and measured by panorama PIV technique, which allows the flow fields to be captured with respect to a spatial coordinate system. We compared wave profiles and velocities of wave particles obtained by experiment with theoretical results using Stokes 1st and 2nd order waves. The velocity distribution at wave crest and trough of the highest and lowest point of a bichromatic wave are investigated in this study.
Latching control was applied to a Wave Energy Converter (WEC) buoy with direct linear electric Power Take-Off (PTO) systems oscillating in heave direction in waves. The equation of the motion of the WEC buoy in the time-domain is characterized by the wave exciting, hydrostatic, radiation forces and by several damping forces (PTO, brake, and viscous). By applying numerical schemes, such as the semi-analytical and Newmark ${\beta}$ methods, the time series of the heave motion and velocity, and the corresponding extracted power may be obtained. The numerical prediction with the latching control is in accordance with the experimental results from the systematic 1:10-model test in a wave tank at Seoul National University. It was found that the extraction of wave energy may be improved by applying latching control to the WEC, which particularly affects waves longer than the resonant period.

The difference of mooring tension by type of buoy was investigated in the circulating water channel and the wave tank for deducting the most stable buoy from the current and the wave condition. 5 types of buoy made up of short cylinder laid vertically (CL-V), short cylinder laid horizontally (CL-H), capsule (CS), sphere (SP) and long cylinder (CL-L) were used for experiments. A mooring line and a weight were connected with each buoy. A tensile gauge was installed between a mooring line and a weight. All buoy's mooring tension was measured at the same time for the wave test with periods of 1.5~3.0 sec and wave heights of 0.1~0.3 m, and the current test with flow speeds of 0.2~1.0 m/sec. As a result, the order of tension value in the wave test was CL-H > CL-V > SP > CS > CL-L. In the current test CL-V and CL-H were recorded in the largest tension value, whereas SP has the smallest tension value. So it seems that SP buoy is the most effective in the location affected by fast current. CS is predicted to be suitable for a location that influence of wave is important more than that of current if practical use in the field is considered. And it was found that the difference of mooring tension among buoys in wave is related to the product of the cross sectional area and the drag coefficient for the buoy's bottom side in high wave height. The factor for the current condition was not found. But it was supposed to be related to complex factors like a dimension and a shape by buoy's posture to flow.
Wave energy has been considered to be one of the most promising energy resources for the future, as it is pollution-free and an abundant natural resource. However, since it has drawbacks of non-stationary energy density, it is necessary to change the wave energy into a simple concentrated energy. Progressive waves in a coastal area can be amplified, swashed, and overtopped by a wave overtopping control structure. By conserving the quantity of overflow in a reservoir, the kinetic energy of the waves can be converted to the potential energy with a hydraulic head above the mean sea level. The potential energy in the form of a hydraulic head can be utilized to produce electric power, similar to hydro-electric power generation. This study aims to find the most optimal shape of wave overtopping structure for maximum overtopping volume of sea water; for this purpose, we carried out the wave overtopping experiment in a wave tank, under both regular and irregular wave conditions.
This study aimed at validating the adopted numerical methods to solve two-phase flow around a two-dimensional (2D) rectangular floating structure in regular waves. A structure with a draft equal to one half of its height was hinged at the center of gravity and free to roll with waves that had the same period as the natural roll period of a rectangular barge. In order to simulate the 2D incompressible viscous two-phase flow in a wave tank with the rectangular barge, the present study used the volume of fluid (VOF) method based on the finite volume method with a standard turbulence model. In addition, the sliding mesh technique was used to handle the motion of the rectangular barge induced by the fluid-structure interaction. Consequently, the present results for the flow field and roll motion of the structure had good agreement with those of the relevant previous experiment.

Vessels receive stress during their navigations as well as during their cargo operations. This stress may cause damages to the hull and may result in accidents. So the hull stress monitoring system(HSMS) is recommended in order to prevent these accidents. In this paper, we manufactured fiber Bragg grating(FBG) sensor and the model ship for towing tank experiments. The strain characteristics of the model ship on the water wave were measured through the towing tank experiment. The FBG sensors and electric strain gauges were attached on the connection jig, and then the characteristics of the FBG sensor were compared with those of the electric strain gauge. The strain of model ship was increased according to the increment of the amplitude of water wave. In particular, the largest strain was measured in the center of the model ship. As the wave period increased, the strain of model ship was decreased.
