Ultrasonic inspection of austenitic steel weldments is a truly difficult task due to complicated wave propagation phenomena such as beam skewing, splitting and distortion. In order to understand these phenomena and design proper inspection procedures, simulation is increasingly paid more attention to. This article addresses a ray tracing based approach to determine incident angle and position of optimal wave mode ultrasonic beam for flaw detection in anisotropic and inhomogeneous austenitic steel weldments. Specially, the optimal mode of ultrasonic wave wave is selected by ray tracing simulation, and an optimization approach based on ray tracing and bi-section search is proposed in order to find the ray path connecting two given points in weldments. With help of this approach, the optimal incident angle and position of ultrasonic beam can be determined for a given flaw position.
Ground wave is an acoustic wave propagating at a sediment sound speed in the case that sediment sound speed is constant with depth, which is explained by modal dispersion effects. In this paper, the ground wave in time domain is simulated using the ray-based approach, which is possible because the modal dispersion can be explained by the guiding of energy caused by reflection and refraction in the waveguide geometry. For a Pekeris waveguide, the ground wave can be interpreted as a sequence of head waves, called a head wave sequence [Choi and Dahl, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 119, 3660-3668 (2006)]. The ground wave is simulated by convolution of the source signal with a channel impulse response of the head wave sequence, which is compared with simulated signals obtained via a Fourier synthesis of a complex parabolic equation (PE) field.

In this study, we develop an algorithm to predict swell-like significant waves in the east coast of Korea using the directional wave gauge which is installed near Sokcho. Using the numerical wave model SWAN, we estimate wave data in open sea from the wave data observed through the directional wave gauge. Then, using the wave ray method with the open-sea wave data as offshore boundary conditions, we predict the swell-like significant waves at several points in the east coast of Korea. We verify the prediction methods with the SWAN and wave ray methods by comparing numerically predicted data against either target or measured data at the observation site. We can improve the prediction of the swell-like significant waves in the east sea of Korea using both the real-time wave measurement system and the present prediction algorithm.

In this study, we develop an algorithm to predict swell-like high waves on the east coast of Korea using the directional wave gauge which was installed near Sokcho. Using the numerical wave model SWAN, we estimate wave data in open sea from the wave data collected by using the directional wave gauge. Then, using the wave ray method and SWAN model with the open-sea wave data as offshore boundary conditions, we predict the swell-like high waves at several major points on the east coast of Korea. We verify the prediction methods with the SWAN and wave ray methods by comparing predicted data against measured one at Wangdolcho. We can improve the prediction of the swell-like high waves in the east sea of Korea using both the real-time wave measurement system and the present prediction algorithm.
A time series simulation is presented by a ray approach for the simulating the received waveform of a broadband acoustical signals interacting with the ocean boundaries. The environment is assumed to be horizontally stratified, and the seafloor is described in terms of homogeneous fluid half-space. The ray approach includes the effects of reflection from the air-water, water-sediment interface and phase shifts due to boundaries interaction. To generate time series, we assume that the acoustic energy propagates from source to receiver along eigenrays and represent the action of the bottom on the incident wave by a linear filter and characterized in the frequency domain by the transfer function. As example application, the time series for an explosive source in a shallow water environment is calculated and analyzed in terms of acoustical process. good agreement with measured time series is demonstrated.
Ray-optics approach based on the rigorous coupled wave theory, called by the rigorous ray-optics method (RROM), is developed for the calculation of couling coefficients of waveguide grating devices. The coupling coefficients of several grating structures, such as rectangular, sinusoidal, triangle, and trapezoidal shapes, are determined by the RROM, and they are compared with those obtained by conventional methods of the ray-optics method (ROM) and the coupled mode method (CMM). In the case of rectangular gratings, the coupling coefficients is evaluated in detail by various depths and duty-cycles of the grating. We have found that the RROM gives more exact solutions for the coupling coefficients of even arbitrary shapes of diffractive waveguide grating devices than the other conventional methods.

X-ray systems for medical treatment use noninvasive procedures. Being capable of locally inspecting the inside of the body, X-ray systems are routinely used for basic diagnosis. X-ray systems to be used for medical purposes were originally made with a gas filled tube inside an induction coil in the initial stages of development but with this approach it becomes difficult to take a satisfactory picture through thick body sections, non invasively. However continued development made it possible to take non-invasive pictures of breasts, blood vessels and other body parts through thick body sections. Recently, high-voltage X-ray generators of more compact size, increased generation efficiency, and sophisticated output control have become possible. All of these features are made possible by the use of a high-frequency output from an inverter and a fast switching semiconductor device. In this paper, we describe a new X-ray generator operating with a resonant inverter in order to reduce switching loss and high frequency noise. In addition, in order to identify the differences amongst types of rectification, we have compared output and the quality of X-ray pictures obtained with full-wave rectification and dual-voltage rectification methods.

Wave propagation is changed by the effect of shoaling, current-depth refraction and shelter-ing etc. To solve these problems. numerous models have been developed. In the present study, a coordinate system is proposed based on the wave ray equation with the wave number equation including diffraction effects . The governing equation for the study was derived from the mild slope wave equation in non-steady state, including current effects (Kirby, 1986a) and trans-formed into an orthogonal curvilinear coordinate system on the basis of the wave ray equation. To obtain a numerical solution, an explicit finite difference scheme was used, and solved by the relaxation method. This model was tested for various cases: Firstly a submersed circular shoal and a constant unit depth. Secondly a submerged elliptic shoal on a slope, and finally a breakwater harbour with obliquely incident waves on a slope. The model was found to simulate the experimental results and other theoretical results in wave height and wave angle fairy well, and the applicability of the model around an arbitrary shaped coastal structure was also verified. To demonstrate the general usefullness of the present approach , the model is to be applied to a field situation with a complex bed topography.

This study presents the experimental results of $CaCO_3$ formation in sand by the Enzyme Induced Carbonate Precipitation (EICP) method. Concentration of $CaCO_3$ with elapsed reaction time is calibrated by standardized procedure by measuring $CO_2$ pressure, and it increases with time towards asymptotic value. Jumunjin sand saturated with EICP solution shows that both shear wave velocity and electrical conductivity sharply increase as the reaction starts to approach to the constant values after 50 hours of reaction time. Urease concentration of 0.5 g/L exhibits 224% higher final shear wave velocity than that of 0.1 g/L. The nucleation models hint that carbonate tends to precipitate not only at grain contacts but also at grain surfaces. Regardless of urease concentration, electrical conductivity and shear wave velocity follow the unique path. The scanning electron microscopic images and X-ray computed tomographic images validate the spatial configuration of produced $CaCO_3$ in soils.
A traveltime tomography has been carried out by transforming electromagnetic data in frequency domain to wave-like domain. The transform uniquely relates a field satisfying a diffusion equation to an integral of the corresponding wavefield. But direct transform of frequency domain magnetic fields to wave-field domain is ill-posed problem because the kernel of the integral transform is highly damped. In this study, instead of solving such an unstable problem, it is assumed that wave-fields in transformed domain can be approximated by sum of ray series. And for further simplicity, reflection and refraction energy compared to that of direct wave is weak enough to be neglected. Then first arrival can be approximated by calculating the traveltime of direct wave only. But these assumptions are valid when the conductivity contrast between background medium and the target anomalous body is low enough. So this approach can only be applied to the models with low conductivity contrast. To verify the algorithm, traveltime calculated by this approach was compared to that of direct transform method and exact traveltime, calculated analytically, for homogeneous whole space. The error in first arrival picked by this study was less than that of direct transformation method, especially when the number of frequency samples is less than 10, or when the data are noisy. Layered earth model with varying conductivity contrasts and inclined dyke model have been successfully imaged by applying nonlinear traveltime tomography in 30 iterations within three CPU minutes on a IBM Pentium Pro 200 MHz.
