  • This paper proposes the applicability of matrix converter topology for the speed control of direct current motors. Matrix convertesr are divided into direct and indirect components. This paper utilizes an indirect matrix converter which is expected to be used widely because of making a variety of output side. The proposed converter has advantages which improves input current shape, has no large energy storage component causing short life. Simulation results are provided to verify effectiveness by comparing and analyzing features of the proposed and conventional topology. The proposed method shows similar performance for speed control, torque control, and load current control compared to a conventional method. Furthermore Harmonics are greatly reduced because the input current is controlled in a manner similar to sinusoidal wave by directly controlling switches at the rectifier stage.

  • In this study, voltammetry system for realizing high sensitivity nano-labeled sensor of detecting heavy metals was designed, and optimal system operating conditions were determined. High precision digital to analog converter (DAC) circuit was designed to control applied unit voltage at working electrode and analog to digital converter (ADC) circuit was designed to measure the current range of $0.1{\sim}1000{\mu}A$ at counter electrode. Main control unit (MCU) circuit for controlling voltammetry system with 150 MHz clock speed, main memory circuit for the mathematical operation processing of the measured current value and independent power circuit for analog/digital circuit parts to reduce various noise were designed. From result of voltammetry system operation, oxidation current peaks which are proportional to the concentrations of Zn, Cd and Pb ions were found at each oxidation potential with high precision.

  • Ocean environmental data such as tide, wind, significant wave height etc. along the expected route were collected and analyzed to secure the safe towing and installation of floating pendulum wave energy converter(FPWEC) at planned sea area. Data from Korea Meteorological Administration(KMA) and Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency(KHOA) were reviewed and those were used to estimate the external forces exerting on the FPWEC during the towing operation. ANSYS system was used for the structural analysis of the FPWEC which is subject to complex environmental load to confirm the safety.

  • A cold cathode flourescent lamp for the backlight in the notebook computer requires high input voltage about 1300(V) when it turns on. But once a discharge starts, the input voltage can be dropped by about one-third for continued output. The equivalent impedance also varies from open to several dozens of kilo-ohms. The piezoelectric transformer converts electrical energy into mechanical energy and then converts it back to electrical energy at a high voltage. Its high output voltage, high efficiency and small size are suitable for driving the LCD backlight in the notebook computer. The piezoelectric transformer operates near the resonance frequency and the output waveform is close to sine wave with very little noise. This paper suggests an inverter for LCD backlight of notebook computer using piezoelectric transformer that includes voltage to frequency converter for gate signal which is useful for tracking of variable resonance frequency depending on load impedance.

  • This paper presents numerical results of the added mass and damping coefficients of vertical axisymmetric bodies on or under the free surface. Also computed are the excitation forces on these bodies due to an incident regular wave system. The numerical scheme employs a localized finite-element method, which is based on the theory of the calculus of variations. The excitation forces and moments on a submerged half-spheroid lying on the bottom are computed and compared with the results obtained by others. he agreement is good. Several specific types of floating vertical axisymmetric platforms are considered for ten different wave lengths, in connection with the design of an ocean-thermal-energy converter platform. The added mass and damping coefficient, as well as the excitations, are presented. It is shown that simple strip theory gives a good approximation of the sway(and pitch) added mass for a disc platform having a long circular cylinder.

  • In the present study, the performance of a floating oscillating water column (OWC) device has been studied in regular waves. The OWC model has the shape of a hollow cylinder. The linear potential theory is assumed, and a matched eigenfunction expansion method(MEEM) is applied for solving the diffraction and radiation problems. The radiation problem involves the radiation of waves by the heaving motion of a floating OWC device and the oscillating pressure in the air chamber. The characteristics of the exciting forces, hydrodynamic forces, flow rate, air pressure in the chamber, and heave motion response are investigated with various system parameters, such as the inner radius, draft of an OWC, and turbine constant. The efficiency of a floating OWC device is estimated in connection with the extracted wave power and capture width. Specifically, the piston-mode resonance in an internal fluid region plays an important role in the performance of a floating OWC device, along with the heave motion resonance. The developed prediction tool will help determine the various design parameters affecting the performance of a floating OWC device in waves.

  • The Korea Nowadays, which is research on digital twin technology for efficient operation in various industrial/manufacturing sites, is being actively conducted, and gradual depletion of fossil fuels and environmental pollution issues require new renewable/eco-friendly power generation methods, such as wave power plants. In wave power generation, however, which generates electricity from the energy of waves, it is very important to understand and predict the amount of power generation and operational efficiency factors, such as breakdown, because these are closely related by wave energy with high variability. Therefore, it is necessary to derive a meaningful correlation between highly volatile data, such as wave height data and sensor data in an oscillating water column (OWC) chamber. Secondly, the methodological study, which can predict the desired information, should be conducted by learning the prediction situation with the extracted data based on the derived correlation. This study designed a workflow-based training model using a machine learning framework to predict the pressure of the OWC. In addition, the validity of the pressure prediction analysis was verified through a verification and evaluation dataset using an IoT sensor data to enable smart operation and maintenance with the digital twin of the wave generation system.

  • This paper presents a novel soft-switching PWM utility frequency AC to high frequency AC power conversion circuit Incorporating boost-half-bridge inverter topology, which is more suitable and acceptable for cost effective consumer induction heating applications. The operating principle and the operation modes are presented using the switching mode and the operating voltage and current waveforms. The performances of this high-frequency inverter using the latest IGBTs are illustrated, which includes high frequency power regulation and actual efficiency characteristics based on zero voltage soft switching (ZVS) operation ranges and the power dissipation as compared with those of the previously developed high-frequency inverter. In addition, a dual mode control scheme of this high frequency inverter based on asymmetrical pulse width modulation (PWM) and pulse density modulation (PDM) control scheme is discussed in this paper in order to extend the soft switching operation ranges and to improve the power conversion efficiency at the low power settings. The power converter practical effectiveness is substantially proved based on experimental results from practical design example.

  • For the purpose of monitoring by ultrasonic test of the ball bearing conditions in rotating machinery, a system for their diagnosis was developed. ultrasonic technique is used to detect abnormal conditions in the bearing system. And various data such as frequency spectrum, energy and amplitude of ultrasonic signals, and ultrasonic parameters were acquired during experiments with the simulated ball bearing system. Based on the above results and practical application for power plant, algorithms and judgement criteria for diagnosis system was established. Bearing diagnosis system is composed of four parts as follows : sensing part for ultrasonic sensor and preamplifier, signal processing part for measuring frequency spectrum, energy and amplitude, interface part for connecting ultrasonic signal to PC using A/D converter, graphic display and software part for display of bearing condition and for managing of diagnosis program.
