This study suggests new synthetic unit hydrograph method considering hydrodynamic characteristic on the basin. The suggested method based on width function GIUH, and the procedure is summarized as follows; 1) Draw up a travel distance distribution map (width function) which is raster of length between from center of individual cells to the outlet by GIS. 2) Calculation of travel time distribution map (rescaled width function) by hydrodynamic parameters and travel distance distribution map. 3) Derivation of IUH and Duration UH from rescaled width function. 4) Comparison of shape of UH between suggested method and existing synthetic unit hydrograph methods. The target basins are selected Ipyeong and Tanbu subwatershed in the Bocheong Basin. The target basins are similar scale (watershed area), but different drainage structure (drainage density et al.). Therefore we anticipate that there are different hydrologic response functions because different hydrodynamic characteristics. As a result of derivation of UH, existing synthetic unit hydrograph methods are similar shape of UHs about Ipyeong and Tanbu watersheds, but the suggested method is different shape of ones. As a result of application to observed data, the peak discharge by suggested method is similar to existing synthetic unit hydrograph methods, but the peak time is well correspondence between those. Henceforth, if the suggested method combines with the rational velocity estimation method, it is useful method for synthetic of UH in ungauged watershed.
A statistical analysis was performed to evaluate relationships among the pollutant concentrations in non-urban area. The data obtained from two subcatchments in Hwa-Ong watershed during 1999 was used for correlation and regression analyses. Strong correlations were observed among the SS, COD, and TP, while it was not significant with TN. The reason fer weak correlation with TN might be that TN was high in dry-days and runoff in wet-days could not increase enough to change it substantially like in other pollutants. The correlations were stronger for the data in wet-days than in dry-days, and it was influenced by watershed characteristics. While TP-COD showed linear relationship from the regression analysis, SS-TP and SS-COD shelved intrinsically linear relationship between log-transformed TP and COD data and non-transformed SS data. The TP-COD showed strong relationship for all the combinations of monitored data, which implies that these two constituent concentrations varied in a similar pattern. The regression equations reported in the paper might be used to estimate one pollutant concentration from the other in pollutant loading estimates, and its application could be expanded to other non-urban watersheds if their characteristics are not significantly different from the study area. In water quality management projects, rigorous monitoring and its thorough evaluation are recommended to develop more reliable relationships among the pollutant concentrations which could be used in other area.

The purpose of this study is to understand the quantitative change of water resources using RMS(Remote Monitoring System) which takes real time data with high reliability. Also, the characteristic of stormwater runoff was understood by the application of the above system for three streams (Jiam, Yulmun, and Gongji stream) in Chuncheon City. The detailed results of these studies are as follows; RMS(Remote Monitoring System) was constructed by the combination of the automatic water-level meter, which measures water-level of streams at all times, and the wireless communication system sending real-time data from the meter. This system is used to evaluate the stormwater runoff in watersheds and the quantitative changes of streams. It is possible to overcome the limit of field investigations needed, which takes a lot of manpower and time, and it is very efficient to provide the reliable flowrate data. Also, it can be applied to the disaster prevention system for flood because the change of flowrate in stream is monitored at real-time. For 3 streams with different watershed characteristics, correlation equations induced from the relation analysis results. In terms of the relation between water-level and flowrate, flowrate was increased rapidly as the water-level rises in case of small watershed and steep slope. The application results of the proposed system for 3 streams (Jiam, Yulmun, Gongji) in Chuncheon city are as follows; The remote monitoring system was very useful for acquisition of the flow rate in stream that are basic data to understand pollutants runoff in watershed. In case of no-rainy day, the runoff ratio for pollutant loading rate was the highest level in Yulmun stream(BOD:2.3%, TN:20.2%, TP:1.2%). So, it shows the management of pollution source is needed such as rehabilitation of sewer line. Runoff ratio of total phosphorus by rainfall in Gongji watershed was increased about 19 times than no-rainy day, which is estimated as the influence of sewer overflow.
Wetlands are vulnerable to biological invasion by alien species, because they function as sinks that accumulate excess water, sediments, nutrients, and other contaminants from the surrounding watersheds by disturbance. In this study, to understand the status and characteristics of the alien plants based on the type of wetlands, we classified 24 ecologically outstanding wetlands and analyzed the status of alien flora. A total of 130 alien plants were found in the wetlands, accounting for 11% of the total plant species. Among them, the Asteraceae species was the most diverse, with 40 species. Erigeron annuus and Oenothera ordorata had the highest frequency of occurrence. The species richness of alien plants in the riverine and lacustrine wetlands (average: 30 species) was higher than that in the mountainous palustrine wetlands (average: 10 species). The same results were found in the naturalization index, urbanization index, and ratio of annuals and biennials, which indicate the degree of artificial interference. In the cluster analysis, the riverine and lacustrine wetlands were combined, and only the mountainous palustrine wetlands were separated. The number of alien plants is remarkably low in the mountainous palustrine wetlands, and it is considered to be the influence of Erigeron strigosus, Symphytum officinale, and Bilderdykia convolvulus, not found in the other types of wetlands. In particular, invasive alien plants such as Aster pilosus, Ambrosia trifida, Sicyos angulatus, Ambrosia artemisiifolia var. elatior were found intensively in the riverine wetlands. Therefore, it is considered that a methodical management is urgently required considering the dispersal of alien plants in the riverine and lacustrine wetlands with high artificial interference.
To evaluate the soil erosion best management practices, many computer models has been utilized over the years. Among those, the USLE and SWAT models have been widely used. These models estimate the soil erosion from the field using empirically-based USLE/MULSE in it. However, these models are not good enough to estimate soil erosion from highland agricultural watershed where severe storm events are causing soil erosion and muddy water issues at the receiving watersheds. Thus, physically-based WEPP watershed version was applied to a watershed, located at Jawoon-ri, Gangwon with very detailed rainfall data, rather than daily rainfall data. Then it was validated with measured sediment data collected at the sediment settling ponds and through overland flow. In this study, very detailed rainfall data, crop management data, soil data reflecting soil reconditioned for higher crop production were used in the WEPP runs. The $R^2$ and the EI for runoff comparisons were 0.88 and 0.91, respectively. For sediment comparisons, the $R^2$ and the EI values were 0.95 and 0.91. Since the WEPP provides higher accuracies in predicting runoff and sediment yield from the study watershed, various slope scenarios (2%, 3%, 5.5%, 8%, 10%, 13%, 15%, 18%, 20%, 23%, 25%, 28%, 30%) were made and simulated sediment yield values were analyzed to develop appropriate soil erosion management practices. It was found that soil erosion increase linearly with increase in slope of the field in the watershed. However, the soil erosion increases dramatically with the slope of 20% or greater. Therefore special care should be taken for the agricultural field with slope greater than 20%. As shown in this study, the WEPP watershed version is suitable model to predict soil erosion where torrential rainfall events are causing significant amount of soil loss from the field and it can also be used to develop site-specific best management practices.

The Water Erosion Prediction Project (WEPP) was initiated in August 1985 to develop new generation water erosion prediction technology for federal agencies involved in soil and water conservation and environmental planning and assessment. Developed by USDA-ARS as a replacement for empirical erosion prediction technologies, the WEPP model simulates many of the physical processes important in soil erosion, including infiltration, runoff, raindrop detachment, flow detachment, sediment transport, deposition, plant growth and residue decomposition. The WEPP included an extensive field experimental program conducted on cropland, rangeland, and disturbed forest sites to obtain data required to parameterize and test the model. A large team effort at numerous research locations, ARS laboratories, and cooperating land-grant universities was needed to develop this state-of-the-art simulation model. The WEPP model is used for hillslope applications or on small watersheds. Because it is physically based, the model has been successfully used in the evaluation of important natural resources issues throughout the United State and in several other countries. Recent model enhancements include a graphical Windows interface and integration of WEPP with GIS software. A combined wind and water erosion prediction system with easily accessible databases and a common interface is planned for the future.

In recent years, synthetic and systematic management with conservation-oriented strategy for Baekdu-daegan, which is the greatest chine as well as the major ecological axis of the Korean Peninsula, is being required to cope adequately with the various kinds of developmental urge. For this, spatially definite zoning for the managerial area on Baekdu-daegan has to be completed first. This study is to take into consideration the traditional concepts of stream and watershed as well as the actual disturbance on Daegan area, and to propose the process for reasonably establishing the managerial boundary adjacent to the Ridges. The case site with topographically diverse characteristics was selected, and the analyses on watershed, road network and land use were carried out using the digital maps and Landsat TM images. Based on these analyses results, the managerial boundaries as alternatives from the Ridges were produced by watershed expansion process, and used for tracing the changes of road occupancy rate and the areal ratio of various land use types to the relevant watersheds to search out the adequate managerial boundary. The results show that watershed expansion process could be effective tool for establishing the managerial boundary, and the fourth expanded watershed would be included for the adequate managerial boundary of the case site.
Characterization of water quality was performed from March 1993 to March 1998, on the purpose of clarifying the relationships between water quality and land use types. The study sites were two reservoir basins; Kaesim and Jangchan in Iwon-myon, Okchon-gun, Chungcho'ngbukdo Province. The two basins were characterized by cultivated area (Kaesim reservoir) and mountain area (Jangchan reservoir), and divided into eleven small basins, where dynamics of pollutants, and the relationship between water quality and land use types were investigated. BOD, SS and TKN became lower and lower from up-stream to down-stream, except for the small basin G where self-purification limit was exceeded. And water quality of Jangchan reservoir basin was worse because of fish nursery. Area below altitude 200m occupied 56% in Kaesim and 44% in Jangchan reservoir basins. Especially total phosphorous (Y/sub T-P/=0.2023X+0.0991, r=0.54) and total nitrogen increased in small basins where the proportion of cultivated and residential area was higher. The analysis of influences of pollutant discharge on water quality showed that pollution charge was very high in cultivated areas. The concentrations of pollutants were attenuated flowing into watersheds through physical, chemical, biochemical, and biological processes. The pollution level of mountain area was lower than that of cultivated areas.
The Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) has been widely used to predict long-term soil loss by incorporating several erosion factors, such as rainfall, soil, topography, and vegetation. This study is aimed to introduce the LISLE within geographic information system(GIS) environment. The Kwangneung Experimental Forest located in Kyongki Province was selected for the study area. Initially, twelve years of hourly rainfall records that were collected from 1982 to 1993 were processed to obtain the rainfall factor(R) value for the LISLE calculation. Soil survey map and topographic map of the study area were digitized and subsequent input values(K, L, S factors) were derived. The cover type and management factor (C) values were obtained from the classification of Landsat Thematic Mapper(CM) satellite imagery. All these input values were geographically registered over a common map coordinate with $25{\times}25m^2$ ground resolution. The USLE was calculated for every grid location by selecting necessary input values from the digital base maps. Once the LISLE was calculated, the resultant soil loss values(A) were represented by both numerical values and map format. Using GIS to run the LISLE, it is possible to pent out the exact locations where soil loss potential is high. In addition, this approach can be a very effective tool to monitor possible soil loss hazard under the situations of forest changes, such as conversion of forest lands to other uses, forest road construction, timber harvesting, and forest damages caused by fire, insect, and diseases.

SWAT is semi-distributed and continuous-time distributed simulation watershed model, which can simulate point and nonpoint source pollutants as well as hydrology and water quality. It was developed to predict the effects of alternative management decisions on water, sediment, and chemical yields with reasonable accuracy. It is able to predict and manage hydrology, sediments, nutrients, and pesticides with Best Management Practices (BMPs) in a watershed. SWAT model also has potential for use in ungauged basins to predict streamflow and baseflow from saturated source area in watersheds. According to various cultivation practices and climate change, SWAT model is available to analyze relative change in hydrology and water quality. In order to establish optimum management of water quality, both monitering and modeling have been conducted actively using SWAT model. As SWAT model is computer program to simulate a lot of natural phenomena, it has limitation to predict and reflect them with on hundred percent accuracy. Thus, it is possible to analyze the effect of BMPs in the watershed where users want to simulate hydrology and water quality only if model accuracy and applicability are assessed first of all and the result of it is well for the study watershed. For assessment of SWAT applicability, most researchers have used $R^2$ and Nash and Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE). $R^2$ and NSE are likely to show different results according to a warm up period and sometimes its results are very different. There have been hardly any studies of whether warm up period can affect simulation results in SWAT model. In this study, how warm up period has a effect on SWAT results was analyzed and a appropriate warm up period was suggested. Lots of SWAT results were compared after using measured data of Soyanggang-dam watershed and applying various warm up period (0 ~ 10 year(s)). As a result of this study, when there was no warm up period, $R^2$ and NSE were 0.645, 0.602 respectively, when warm up period was 2 years, $R^2$ and NSE were 0.648, 0.632, and when warm up period was 4 years, $R^2$ and NSE were 0.663, 0.652 separately. Through this study, sensitive analysis of warm up period in SWAT model was conducted, and this study could give a guideline able to simulate hydrology and water quality for more accuracy than before as users change a lot of warm up periods as well as any simulation parameters.
