A Study on Planning of Waterfront Belt in Busan Coastal Area (부산 해안지역 친수공간벨트계획에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is for providing a strategic plan of waterfront belt development at the coastal area of Busan city that might enhance the possibility on healthy use of spare time of the residents and demand of tourism, together with raising the potential and the value added effect of coastal space. This study is one of a series of studies for developing waterfront belt at Busan coastal area. In this study we suggest the new concepts of waterfront belt, waterfront cluster and waterfront greenway. And then we present a model of making waterfront belt through waterfront cluster, which is an aggregate of individual waterfront spaces, using waterfront greenway. After that we apply this model to Haeundae coastal area and test the applicability of the model.

  • This study aims at advancing waterfront planning and development of North Port or of Pusan and attempting to establish an identity through the analysis and case studied of waterfront development of foreign countries. This study is based on Pusan urban harbor plan and the case study which was investigated the relational port with an urban area to find a model of development method and procedure of urban waterfront renewal. The approach of this study is to classify diversified cases and to suggest elements after reviewing successful cases. The point in the waterfront development plan of North Port of Pusan is how to secure an amenity on the edge and provides a comprehensive theoretical base such as skyline, coastline, green area, accessibility scenery, landmark, open space, and so on. The results of this stud is useful for the planner to develop more and systematic approaches which could utilize waterfront. Waterfront development will be a new change of urban development for Pusan.

  • This study is to propose guidelines on waterfront landscape planning for Busan North Port redevelopment area. In Korea, Busan North Port redevelopment project is the first one which aims to make old port area into citizen-friendly waterfront. It is expected that many ports will be redeveloped soon after this urban waterfront remaking project. This is the basic research to lay groundwork for waterfront landscape planning at port redevelopment area. We analyze good examples of genera/landscape plans for port redevelopment area through case studies and suggest the problems and important elements for making landscape plan of Busan North Port area. Also we propose guidelines for making waterfront landscape plan of the redevelopment area at Busan North Port.

  • This study aims at finding issues and ideas of waterfront planning through analysing planning concepts and characteristics of New York City Waterfront Comprehensive Plan(NYC WCP). The first NYC WCP in 1992 divided waterfront area as 4 functional areas which are natural, public, working and redeveloping waterfront. The characteristics of WCP in 1992 are zonning, height, setback, public access, visual corridor, floor area and so forth. After then NYC WCP revision in 2011 intergrated and developed the former plan through the eight visions which are expanding public access, enlivening the waterfront, improving water quality, restoring the natural waterfront, enhancing the Blue Network, improving government oversight and increasing climate resillience. In conclusion, NYC WCP successfully achieved both sufficient capacity of planning concepts and design guidelines for each region.

  • This study aims at advancing waterfront of Pusan Port and attempting to establish an identity through studying characteristics of place in Pusan Port. The place is consisted of two elements ; orientation and identity, which is expressed clearly the environmental totality including the character and space. The urban waterfront is also one of the place pattern, and that is consist of land area, water area, and transit zone combining two areas. Although there are a lot of primary factors to be able to make the most of the character and identity in Pusan port, badly planned development prevents the plan promoting the sense of place in urban waterfront. The point in the waterfront development plan of Pusan Port is how to secure aminities based on Identity and Orientation; node, landmark, edge, path, district. The result of this study is for planners to develop more and systematic approaches which could utilize waterfront.

  • This study is to propose key directions of Busan North Port redevelopment for revitalization of waterfront. Since 1960s, there have been a lot of port redevelopment projects around the world. In Korea, Busan North Port redevelopment project is the first one which aims to make waterfront citizen-friendly within old port area. Many ports will be redeveloped soon after the Busan North Port redevelopment. At this time this is the basic research to lay groundwork for the systematic and efficient port redevelopment. We analyze the good examples of the world through case studies and suggest the problems and important elements of success of port redevelopment. Also we propose the objectives for waterfront revitalization and the visages of waterfront within port area. And then we analyze the situation of Busan North Port and examine the blueprints issued by national and city government. After that we suggest some ideas, such as land use plan, on North Port redevelopment for revitalization of waterfront in Busan Port Area.

The point in the waterfront development is how to secure amenities based on indentity and orientation; node, landmark, edge, path, district. This study aims at developing waterfront area of Pusan South Harbor and attempting to establish an identity through studying characteristics of ‘places’ in Pusan South Harbor. The place consists of two elements; orientation and identity, which can be explained the environmental totality, ‘character’ and ‘space’ respectively. The urban waterfront has strong characteristics which consists of land area, water area, and transit zone combining two areas. The place of Pusan South Harbor is analysed those four elements. We proposed objectives and criteria which can be used in enhancing the sense of this place.

  • Residentialization is in progress in the coastal areas of the cities as the number of apartment houses rapidly increase with the simultaneous provision-centered development. It would be necessary to provide quality residential environments which would not deteriorate and would be chosen by many people as a sustainable residence in the future through the demand-centered development, considering the residents' consciousness. To do so, it is necessary to understand the residents' consciousness about the residential environment in the coastal area that has differentiated characteristics as a waterfront space through an evaluation of the residential environment, different from the existing residences. This study understands the significance of the waterfront space in the residential environment through people's consciousness when they choose a residence before they reside and people's consciousness when they evaluate the residence after they reside, concerning how the environment of the waterfront space is recognized as compared to other elements of the residential environment according to the geographic characteristics of the coastal area. In addition, this study analyzes the significance of people's consciousness before and after their residence through a comparison according to the change of distance to the waterfront from the perspective of access to the waterfront, the characteristic as a residential environment in the coastal area.

A Study on Climate Characteristics of Waterfront in Busan Area (부산지역 워터프런트의 기후특성에 관한 연구)

  • The waterfront has distinct climate characteristics different from urban or inland area. These may create not only the rise of energy and maintenance costs for facilities located at waterfront areas, but also the negative effects on the climate of the nearby inland area, unless these are treated with particular care. For the present study, the climate characteristics of waterfront were examined with climate data of 10 observation points carefully selected in Busan area. Each weather observation point was classified into either waterfront area of inland area, based on the distance from the coastal line. Special considerations were given to the climate data gathered at the Dae-Yeon weather station because it shows the climate characteristics similar to those of inland area, although it is located very near the waterfront area. Results indicates that this peculiar climate condition attributes, at least in part, to the reclamation of frontal coastal area.
