  • In this work, we developed a new type ultrasonic dehumidifier with piezoelectric ceramics, which and efficiently repel waterdrops on outdoor glass plates exposed to raindrops. Through finite element analysis of a certain type of glass plates to analyze its dynamic behavior, the structure of the ultrasonic device we determined to get the optimal performance. A supplemental metal plate was attached to the glass plate for uniform cleaning. Based on the theoretical results, experimental samples were fabricated and evaluated with various dimensions of the glass plate and the piezoceramic vibrator. Driving circuit for the dehumidifier made use of the frequency sweeping technique to keep track of the resonant frequency of the glass plate that was variant with environmental conditions.

  • Leaf vegetables are composed of about 80% of moisture and 20 to 30% are damaged during the transportation due to decomposition and browning. This study was conducted to develop a washing, sterilization dehydrating system that could remove these polluters, and major findings were summarized as followings. The system was constructed so that leaf vegetables were moved through the washing, sterilization, and dehydration stages contained in a box, the shifting was conducted using PLC-controlled pneumatic pressure. Basic tests for determination of design parameters led to the results that optimum washing times by air bubbles were 5 minutes for lettuce and perilla and 10 minutes for Chinese cabbage, and percentages of bacteria removed using the optimum washing times were 94, 98, and 76%, respectively. Optimum speed and time of a centrifugal dehydrator for removal surface waterdrop on the leaves were 400 rpm and 30 s, respectively, dehydration rates were in a range $70{\sim}82%$ and damage rates were within 15% for the three vegetables tested. Operating efficiencies of the developed system for lettuce, perilla, and Chinese cabbage were 100, 120, and 80 kg/h, respectively, which were 25, 24, and 27 times of operating efficiencies of the conventional manual method.

  • Purpose: This study was aimed to investigate the colony counts by different disinfecting processes and duration of the operation for humidifiers in an intensive care unit (ICU) in Busan. Method: The four steps of disinfecting process were taken with four different humidifiers according to the use of disinfectant (1:100 $Deconex^{(R)}$ 50FF/nothing) and refilling water (tap water/distilled water). First, the colony counts using water sample from wick was conducted at 0 hr, 24 hr, and 48 hr respectively after turning on the humidifiers. Next, the colony counts using waterdrop from the outlet was done at 0 hr, 24 hr, 48 hr, and 72 hr respectively after turning on the humidifiers. Result: No colony was counted after disinfecting with 1:100 $Deconex^{(R)}$ 50FF until 72 hr after turning on the humidifiers. However, without disinfecting with $Deconex^{(R)}$ 50FF, the colony count was increased in the humidifiers from 24 hr after turning on the humidifiers. The result was the same regardless of the refilling water. Conclusion: According to the results, the study found that disinfection of humidifiers in the ICUs with 1:100 $Deconex^{(R)}$ 50FF every 72 hr is effective to remove general bacteria.

  • In three dimensional wave field, a direct numerical simulation model, which is able to handle free-fall and slope-fall of a waterdrop due to overtopping, is proposed to evaluate the overtopping rate on the coastal structures like an absorbing revetment. A comparison between the numerical model and existing experimental results for overtopping rate was made to validate the proposed numerical model's accuracy, and showed fairly good agreement between them. It is confirmed in numerical and hydraulic(existing) model test that the overtopping quantity on a absorbing revetment becomes larger with an increase in Ursell number. Also, the overtopping rate estimated by 3-D numerical model is compared with it obtained by 2-D numerical model.

  • Qualitative enhancement of dwelling life has changing the recognition for the environment friendly wood which is being highlighted for its usage as an interior materials. This trend may prove the excellent performance of wood whose inherent characteristics has its comfortable, mild feeling of material, sound resistance and stabilities and the market of interior woods including floor, moulding and wooden panel as finishing interior materials is growing sustainably. However, since this materials is vulnerable to humidity and flame, waterproofing and flame retarding stability, an essential condition for interior materials, together with maintenance, are the main topics to be resolved. From the above-mentioned results, as a result of waterdrop contact angle, wood absorption volume and water content percentage test and the performance test of the processed materials after flame retardant, though there was some submerging time changes among types of woods for ensuring waterproofing performance improvement but as time passes, similar tendency was noticed to be formulated. As the submerging time is increased, so does the absorption volume and accordingly optimal level of range is judged to be drawn in order to ensure excellent performance, taking optimal economy into consideration. Therefore, it is considered that above-mentioned woods could be utilized for waterproof and flame retardant processed interior materials using uniform microwave and in order to put this technology into practical application, a research by way of diversified performance proving is required to be carried out.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the characteristics of science gifted students who participated in science gifted activity using rainbow. For this purpose, the science gifted activity using rainbow was developed and applied to 23 seventh grade science gifted students. The results indicated that gifted students had various concepts and ideas of optics. For example, some gifted students thought that there was rainbowshaped light at the place of rainbow, and another considered the process of dispersion of light in a waterdrop would be same as the process of the dispersion in the prism. Also, various rainbow theories and scientific imagination of gifted students were found. For devising new rainbow, gifted students used two strategies, 'changing the features' and 'changing conditions'. In addition, we discussed effective methods of applying this activity and implications to science gifted education.

  • Single-drop splash/detachment studies and multiple-drop splash/detachment experiments were carried out to measure detachment by single and multiple drops. A raindrop tower 7.0 m in height was used to study soil splash by single drop raindrop impact over time on repacked soil samples in containers 76.2 mm in diameter. The waterdrop diameter and kinetic energy were 4.1 mm and $1.22{\times}10^{-3}$ J $drop^{-1}$, respectively. The samples consisted of five agricultural topsoils sieved to <2 mm, varying from sandy loam to clay loam in texture. The average weight of splashed soil particles after 75 drops did not show any significant difference between the five soils. The average weight of particles splashed by the first 15 drops showed that the sandy Pelham soil splashed to a greater degree than the others, and was therefore more detachable (p=0.05) than the other soils. The average weight of particles splashed by the last 15 drops also showed that the Pelham soil was the most detachable, with Cecil, Appling, Dyke, and Worsham soils being progressively less detachable. The effect of multiple drops on detachment was studied under a nozzle-type rainfall simulator at 74.9 mm $h^{-1}$ intensity for 85 min using the same soils as the single drop experiments. The total soil splash value for 85 min on Appling, Cecil, Dyke, Pelham, and Worsham soils were 6121, 6206, 4183, 5160, and 3247 g $m^{-2}$, respectively. There were no obvious relationships between soil loss measured from the different experiments.

  • The slime flounder Microstomus achne were caught at Geomun Island, Yosu-si, Jeollanamdo from January to March in 2006. The fertilized eggs were observed for morphological development of egg, embryo and larva. Eggs were colorless transparent, separative pelagic, absent of oil globule, and the diameter was 1.64${\pm}$0.03 mm (n=50). The eggs were hatched at 168 hours 40 minutes after fertilization in the range of $9.8\sim13.0^{\circ}C$ (mean $11.4{\pm}1.6^{\circ}C$). Total length of newly hatched larva was 4.05${\pm}$0.18 mm (n=20). The larva had developed membranous fin showing waterdrop-shaped structure, and their mouth and anus were not open. The myotomes were 14~15+33~34=47~49. The egg yolks were 1.64${\pm}$0.12 mm in major axis, and 1.23${\pm}$0.19 mm in minor axis. At 12 days after hatching, the total length was 7.32${\pm}$0.42 mm(n=20). The egg yolk was completely absorbed and transferred to post larval stage. Star-shaped melanophores and branch-shaped xanthophores in the edge of membranous fin were more densed. Chrysanthemum-shaped melanophores in the notochord were densed and formed 4~5 melanophore bands. At 90~93 days after hatching, morphological features of the larva, 19.91${\pm}$1.63 mm TL(n=20), were transferred to juvenile stage showing similar features with those of the adult fish.
