Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in surface water from the coastal area of Bangladesh

  • Sixteen USEPA priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the surface water from the coastal areas of Bangladesh were analyzed by GC-MS/MS. Samples were collected in winter and summer, 2015. The total concentration of PAHs (${\Sigma}PAHs$) showed a slight variation in the two seasons, which varied from 855.4 to 9653.7 ng/L in winter and 679.4 to 12639.3 ng/L in summer, respectively. The levels of ${\Sigma}PAHs$ were comparable to or relatively higher than other coastal areas around the world. The areas with recent urbanization and industrialization (Chittagong, Cox's Bazar and Sundarbans) were more contaminated with PAHs than the unindustrialized area (Meghna Estuary). Generally, 2-3-ring PAHs were the dominant compounds. Molecular ratios suggested that PAHs in the study areas could be originated from both pyrogenic and petrogenic sources. The risk assessment revealed the extremely high ecological risk of PAHs, indicating an intense attention should be paid to PAHs pollution in the coastal areas of Bangladesh.

Effectiveness of One- and Dual-Stage Recycled-Water Systems in Slurry Bioreactor Treatment for Coal Tar-Contaminated Soil (콜타르 오염토양의 슬러리상 생물반응기 처리를 위한 일단 및 이단 재순환식 공정의 효율성)

  • This research was performed to evaluate the effectiveness of one- and dual-stage recycled-water systems in slurry bioreactor treatment for coal tar-contaminated soil. Silty loam soil was used for this research. Coal tar and 14 target PAHs (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) concentration in the soil were determined with gas chromatography. There was no significant difference between removal efficiencies of one- and dual-stage recycled water systems in case of about 4,000 mg coar tar/kg. However, the dual-stage system increased significantly the removal efficiency in case of about 20,000 mg coar tar/kg and the first-order kinetic constant of the system was over 1.5 times higher than that of one-stage recycled water system. 3-Ring compounds in PAHs was removed completely within 30 days of operation. Coar tar was removed in over 96% through biodegradation and removed in about 4% by evaporation. High correlation coefficient($r^2=0.91$) was found between water solubility and removal efficiency of the cyclic compounds.

  • A Korean water deer was rescued after being hit by a motor vehicle. Clinical and radiographic examination revealed a grade III open fracture of the right metacarpus with severe soft tissue injury. The water deer underwent closed reduction of the fracture, which was stabilized by the application of the Ilizarov method of 4-ring circular external skeletal fixation (CESF) as a minimally invasive technique. The water deer was successfully released into the wild. CESF was advantageous for the stabilization of open comminuted fracture and the management of a severely contaminated wound in a Korean water deer. CESF can be used successfully in wild deer with good tolerance and minimal complications.

Geology and Volcanism of Hyeongjeseom (Islet) Volcano, Jeju Island (제주도 형제섬 화산체의 지질과 화산활동)

  • The Hyeongjeseom (Islet) is an erosional remnant of volcano which is located about 2 km northeast of sea shore of the Songaksan tuff ring, and is composed of volcaniclastic deposit, agglomerate and scoria deposit, ponded lava, aa lava flows, reworked deposit and beach deposit in ascending order from the base. The volcano is formed by volcaniclastic deposits and lava flows that recorded a transition from initial phreatomagmatic to magmatic explosions followed by lava effusion. It is interpreted that the outcropped volcaniclastic deposit may be a remaining portion of outer ring of a tuff cone. A bomb and a ponded lava yield geochemically basaltic trachyandesite compositions (SiO2 51.3 wt%, Na2O+K2O 6.0 wt%) and belong to olivine basalt with scarce (<5 %) phenocrysts of olivine, petrographically. By incremental heating Ar-Ar dating method, the plateau age of lava flow in the Heongjesom is 9.2±3.6(2σ) ka, implying that the volcanism of Heongjeseom may have occurred earlier than the Songaksan tuff ring which erupted ca. 3.7 ka. It still remains a task to find a volcano which matches with a historical record of volcanic activity that occurred a thousand years ago.

Effect of Recycled-Water Addition on Treatment Efficiency of Coal Tar-Contaminated Soil with Slurry Phase Bioreactor (콜타르 오염토양의 슬러리상 생물반응기에서 처리수 재순환에 따른 효율 평가)

  • This research was conducted to evaluate the effect of recycled-water addition on the treatment of coar tar-contaminated soil with slurry phase bioreactor. A bench-scale slurry phase bioreactor was maintained to optimize the microbial growth. Silty loam soil was used for this research. Concentrations of coal tar and 14 target PAHs (Polyunclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons) in the soil were determined with gas chromatography. Addition of recycled-water to slurry phase bioreactor was not significantly increased the removal efficiency of 2000 mg coar tar/kg. However, it significantly increased the removal efficiency of 20000 mg coar tar/kg. In 20000 mg coar tar/kg, the first order kinetic constant and the removal efficiency of the reactor with recycled-water addition were 2.5 and 2.0 times higher than those of the reactor without recycled- water addition. Coar tar in the slurry phase bioreactor was removed in 3.8~16.0% by vaporization and biodegraded in 84.0~96.2%. Removal efficiency of 3-ring compounds was high as 92.2~99.7% in the case of recycled-water addition. However, removal efficiencies of 3 and 4-ring compounds were low as 0~30%.

Preparation and Characterization of Water-Dispersible Silver Nanoparticles Stabilized by PEO-Conjugated Pro-Drugs

  • $\omega$-Anhydride-functionalized poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) obtained from chain-end functionalization and anionic ring-opening polymerization of ethylene oxide using n-butyllithium with potassium t-butoxide in the presence of dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) was found to be an efficient material for the preparation of water-soluble, polymeric pro-drugs. The reaction of $\omega$-anhydride-functionalized PEO with sulfonamide or with vancomycin provided an efficient method to produce corresponding, water-soluble, PEO-conjugated sulfonamide or PEO-conjugated, vancomycin pro-drugs. These were used successfully to prepare water-dispersible, silver nanoparticles. In this study, the particle sizes were in the range of $5{\sim}40$ nm. The resulting products were characterized by $^1H$ NMR spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, electron and X-ray diffraction, size exclusion chromatography, and UV/Visible spectroscopy.

  • This paper presents the friction and wear characteristics of contact type sealing unit for a water turbine of a small hydro-power generation, which Is to stop a leakage of a circulating water from a outside of an impeller to an inside of a rolling bearing. The surface wear strongly affect to the seal life of a mechanical face seal. In this study, the hardness of a stainless steel in which is a heat-treated is 892.8 in Vickers hardness and the hardness of silicone carbide of SiC is 714.1 in Vickers hardness. The surface hardness of a heat-treated stainless steel is 25% high compared with that of a ceramic material of SiC. The contact modes of rubbing surfaces aye a dry friction a water film friction and a mixed friction that is contaminated by a dust, silt and moistures, etc. These two factors of a contact rubbing modes and a material property are very important parameters on the tribological performance such as a friction and wear between a seal ring and a seal seat. The experimental result shows that the surface hardness of a seal material is very important on the friction coefficient and a wear volume. Thus, the results recommend higher hardness of a seal material, which may reduce a friction loss and increase a wear life of primary seal components

  • Tensile behavior of polypropylene fiber reinforced concrete due to restrained shrinkage has been investigated experimentally by ring and beam tests. Parameters include types of concrete, water-cement ratio, volume fraction of fiber and steel ratio. Results show that little influence of the addition of polypropylene(Vf=0.1%) has been observed as expected and results from other researches.

Characteristics of Organics Treatment Using White-rot Fungus Biofilm of Atmospheric Exposed Type (대기노출형 백색부후균 생물막을 이용한 유기물 처리특성)

  • It is really urgent to develop wastewater treatment system which is economically efficient, occupies small area for buildup, can be easily operated, discharges small amount of sludge due to the more strict water quality standard, the expensive water and energy cost and so on. This study on treatment of wastewater including nonbiodegadable materials using white-rot fungus biofilm were designed to investigate the submerged type of biofilm, hydraulic retention times, recycle rates, and module turning times. Removal efficiencies of fully exposed biofilm type in atmosphere are similar to submerged biofilm of aeration type. The optimum conditions of white-rot fungus biofilm of fully exposed type in atmosphere are HRT 3$\sim$4 hr, recycle rate 6$\sim$10 Q, module turning times 0.5$\sim$2 times/min. At this time, removal efficiencies of organics were COD$_{Cr}$ 65.0$\sim$69.9%, NBDCOD 70.4$\sim$72.7%, BOD$_5$ 88.8$\sim$90.1%, SS 84.2$\sim$90.4%. Moreover average effluent concentration of BOD$_5$(8.9 mg/L) satisfied water quality standard of heavy water(BOD$_5$ less than 10 mg/L) but concentration of NBDCOD(29.6 mg/L) was higher than water quality standard of heavy water(NBDCOD less than 20 mg/L).

  • The positional parameters of framework atoms, cations, and water molecules in hydrated and dehydrated $Mg_4Na_4-A$, $Ca_6-A$, $Zn_5Na_2-A$ and $Co_4Na_4-A$ were determined by the optimization technique using some potential energy functions and VAIOA optimization program. Upon dehydration, cations in hydrated states move toward the framework oxygens of 6 rings. Frameworks of fully dehydrated zeolite A are more stable than those of fully dehydrated divalent cation exchanged Zeolite A. There are three different kinds of water molecules in divalent cation exchanged Zeolite A; W(III) (water molecules having hydrogen bonds), W(II) (water molecules associated with $Na^+$ ions), and W(I) (water molecules associated with divalent cations). Three different DTA endothermic peaks were observed corresponding to the dehydration of three different kinds of water molecules in divalent cation exchanged Zeolite A.
