Photodegradation of Butachlor and Pyrazosulfuron-ethyl in Rice Paddy Water under Natural Sunlight

  • BACKGROUND: Dissipation of herbicides in paddy water varies significantly, being dependent on environmental conditions such as sunlight. The photodegradation under natural sunlight may be one of natural degradation routes of herbicides dissipation. Therefore, the aim of this study was to monitor the degradation of butachlor and pyrazosulfuron-ethyl in paddy water under natural sunlight. METHODS AND RESULTS: The 12 water sample bottles of treatment were covered by quart glass plates, which allow about 90% of UV radiation (280-2000 nm) to pass through, to minimize the UV attenuation. The other 12 water sample bottles of the control were covered by glass lids and wrapped with aluminum foils to prevent the sunlight. The concentration of butachlor and pyrazosulfuron-ethyl in paddy water samples bottles was monitored under ambient conditions with and without natural sunlight. The concentration of butachlor and pyrazosulfuron-ethyl for treatment decreased from $355.3{\mu}g/L$ to $37.8{\mu}g/L$ and from $10.5{\mu}g/L$ to $3.9{\mu}g/L$, respectively, during consecutive 21 days after herbicide application under natural sunlight. CONCLUSION: The concentration of butachlor in paddy water decreased quickly under ambient conditions with natural sunlight. The degradation of butachlor in paddy water was enhanced by the natural sunlight. However, the degradation of pyrazosulfuron-ethyl was insignificant under natural sunlight.

Physical characteristics of ceramic/glass-polymer based CAD/CAM materials: Effect of finishing and polishing techniques

  • PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of different finishing and polishing techniques on water absorption, water solubility, and microhardness of ceramic or glass-polymer based computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) materials following thermocycling. MATERIALS AND METHODS. 150 disc-shaped specimens were prepared from three different hybrid materials and divided into five subgroups according to the applied surface polishing techniques. All specimens were subjected up to #4000 grit SiC paper grinding. No additional polishing has been done to the control group (Group I). Other polishing procedures were as follows: Group II: two-stage diamond impregnated polishing discs; Group III: yellow colored rubber based silicone discs; Group IV: diamond polishing paste; and Group V: Aluminum oxide polishing discs. Subsequently, 5000-cycles of thermocycling were applied. The analyses were conducted after 24 hours, 7 days, and 30 days of water immersion. Water absorption and water solubility results were analyzed by two-way ANOVA and Tukey post-hoc tests. Besides, microhardness data were compared by Kruskal-Wallis and MannWhitney U tests (P<.05). RESULTS. Surface polishing procedures had significant effects on water absorption and solubility and surface microhardness of resin ceramics (P<.05). Group IV exhibited the lowest water absorption and the highest microhardness values (P<.05). Immersion periods had no effect on the microhardness of hybrid ceramic materials (P>.05). CONCLUSION. Surface finishing and polishing procedures might negatively affect physical properties of hybrid ceramic materials. Nevertheless, immersion periods do not affect the microhardness of the materials. Final polishing by using diamond polishing paste can be recommended for all CAD/CAM materials.

옹기 화병이 절화 거베라의 수명 및 미생물 증식에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Earthenware Vase on Vase Life of Cut Gerbera Flowers and Microbial Multiplication)

  • 미세다공성의 옹기 화병의 절화수명 연장효과를 알아보기 위하여 거베라 절화를 식물재료로 하여 관행의 자기 및 유리 화병과 절화수명을 비교하였다. 수돗물과 절화보존제가 들어있는 유리, 자기, 옹기 화병에 거베라 'Honeymoon'과 'Golden Time'을 꽂고 절화수명과 미생물 수를 조사하였다. 그 결과, 두 품종 모두 옹기 화병에서 절화수명이 길었으며, 절화보존용제가 수돗물에 비해 절화수명을 연장시켰다. 특히 절화보존제를 넣은 옹기 화병에서 두 품종 모두 절화수명이 14일 이상으로 가장 길었다. 누적 흡수량은 절화보존용제를 넣은 옹기 화병에서 'Honeymoon'이 19.2mL, 'Golden Time'이 15.8mL로 가장 많았다. 생체중은 대체로 옹기에 꽂은 절화가 다른 재질의 화병에 꽂은 것에 비해 컸으며, 절화보존제 처리가 생체중 감소를 지연시켰다. 특히 옹기에 절화보존제를 처리한 경우 처리 8일 후에도 초기 생체중의 89% 수준을 유지하여 수분 흡수가 원활했음을 알 수 있었다. 미생물수 측정 결과, 'Golden Time'은 옹기 화병 내의 보존용액의 총균수가 다른 재질의 화병에 비해 적게 나타났다. 'Golden Time'의 총균수는 8일째 옹기 화병 내의 보존용액에서 435cfu/mL 정도로 자기나 유리 화병 내의 보존용액보다 20-30% 수준으로 낮게 나타났다. 이상의 결과로 옹기 화병은 보존용액 내 미생물의 증식을 지연시켜 절화 거베라의 물올림을 유지시켜 주기 때문에 도관 폐쇄에 의한 화경굽음 현상이 억제되었고, 절화수명도 길어졌다고 볼 수 있다. 따라서 미세다공성의 옹기는 화병의 좋은 재질이며, 절화보존제는 그 기능을 향상시킬 수 있을 것이다.

수열처리에 의한 폐병유리의 다공질 재료화 (Porous Materials from Waste Bottle Glasses by Hydrothermal Treatment)

  • Porous materials were manufactured by hydrothermal treatment of waste bottle glass without foam agent. Factorial design was applied to analyze data by statistical methods and deal with the important factors for a process. The largest effect for porosity was for temperature of hydrothermal treatment. Amount of water and temperature-water interaction appeared to have little effect. The particle size of raw material was also identified as a major factor by one-way ANOVA and the porosity decreased as the size increased. The sintering temperature was not statistically significant for the porosity but was significant for the pore size. The porous material had compressive strength and thermal conductivity comparing with those of ALC (autoclaved lightweight concrete), although it has higher porosity than for ALC.

  • In this study the attempts were made to investigate the possibilities of using domestic clay minerals and zeolite, which are available in almost unlimitted quantities, for preparation of aluminum sulfate, white carbon and silica gel. Aluminum sulfate was obtained by the method of sulfuric acid treatment. White carbon and silica gel were prepared by utilizing crystalline silica which was obtained as a by product during preparing the aluminum sulfate. White carbon was obtained by reacting 5.0 weight percent sulfuric acid solution with water glass which was a reaction product of crystalline silica and soldium hydroxide in a autoclave, while silica gel was obtained by reaction 10.0 weight percent acetic acid solution with water glass.

Fluidized Bed Drying Effect on the Aerogel Powder Synthesis

  • A fluidized bed drying approach was utilized to the synthesis of water glass based silica aerogel powders. The effects of the fluidized bed drying conditions such as the superficial velocity and temperature of hot air and bead size as well as bead/wet-gel ratio, on the physical properties such as tapping density and productivity of the aerogel powders were systematically investigated. The experimental results showed that the amount of beads mixed with wet-gels in the fluidized bed column has the most profound impact on the fluidization efficiency, greatly enhancing the yield of the aerogel powders up to 98% with a proper bead/wet-gel weight ratio as compared to 72% without using beads. No significant change was observed in the tapping density over a wide range of the fluidized drying condition. Consequently the fluidized bed drying approach shows a good promise as an alternative route for the large-scale production of the aerogel powders.

하수중 장내세균에 대한 태양광선 및 포식미생물의 살균효과 (Effects of sunlight and predacious microorganisms on survival of enteric bacteria in sewage water)

  • The disinfection effects of sunlight and predacious microorganisms on enteria of Escherichia coli and Proteus vulgaris were examined in sewage water at 22 to $26^{\circ}C$. The test prganisms were disinfected by 4 to 5 logs during 6-hour a day exposure to sunlight for seven days. The effect was proportional to the light intensity and was proved to be dur to the action of the visible light of short wavelength which can transmit the soft glass of a flask glass. The predacious microorganisms decreased trhe test organisms by about 3 to 4 logs during 7 days. The complex actions of sunlight and predacious microorganisms were variable depending upon the test organisms, but the total effects of those enviromental factors were yet completely understood.

자동 스프링클러로 보호된 창의 내화 성능 평가에 관한 연구 (The Evaluation of Fire Endurance of Glazing Systems with Automatic Sprinklers)

  • To use glazing systems protected by automatic sprinklers as fire barriers in building compartmentation, fire endurance tests of these systems have been performed by several research workers. Most of the tests concerned the types of glasses and sprinklers, sprinkler water flow rate, and sprinkler activation time. Horizontal side wall sprinklers and window glazing systems with a vertical center mullion were mainly applied in the tests. In the study, full-scale fire endurance tests were carried out to verify the ability of large glazing systems divided by a horizontal mullion and protected by pendent vertical sprinklers. The result shows that the protrusive length of the horizontal mullion, which is perpendicular to the glass surface, is the main parameter that determines the fire resistance rating of the systems. The mullion obstructs the water flow in the glass.

水性가스 轉換反應觸媒의 流動化에 關하여 (The Fluidization of a Water Gas Shift Conversion Catalyst)

  • The water gas shift conversion catalyst prepared by the American Cyanamide Co. was subjected to fluidization in a 2-in. Pyrex glass tube to obtain the basic fluidization characteristic data. The size of the catalyst charged ranged from 70 to 120 meshes and it was supported on a single layer 300-mesh wire gauze through which the fluidizing medium, the air, was passed. Following are some data and facts found by the authors: (1) The catalyst particles were porous, and their surfaces were trough and irregular. (2) The average effective particle density and the average shape factor of these particles were 152.2 lb/$ft^3$ and 0.865 respectively. (3) As the particle diameter of the catalyst increased, the minimum fluid voidage of the bed decreased slightly. (4) Just before the incipient fluidization, pressure drop suddenly fell and the bed expanded simultaneously. (5) After fluidization set in, the expansion characteristics of the catalyst bed were similar to those of sand and glass beads except intense bubbling in the catalyst bed.

  • This study was performed to investigate the material behavior of hybrid thermoplastic composites contained glass fiber and calcium carbonate. The composite was prepared with each combination ratio of calcium carbonate, and the content of glass fiber was fixed with 10% by weight. In order to investigate the material behavior for various combination ratio, tension test, flexural test, and impact test were performed. Microscopic observation were conducted to examine the fractured surface of specimen for tension test. And the material behavior of the hybrid thermoplastic composite immersed in salt water with definite time was investigated.
