  • Thermal power generation accounts for the highest percentage of domestic power generation, among which coal-fired boiler generation accounts for the highest percentage. Coal boilers generate harmful substances and fine dust during coal combustion and have a serious effect on air pollution. So, fluidized-bed boilers have been introduced as eco-friendly coal boilers. It uses a fluid medium which affect the combustion temperature of coal. Because of it fluidized-bed boilers emit less pollutants than original one. Water-wall tubes play an important role in this fluidized bed boiler. Due to the fluid medium, the wall damage is more severe than the existing boiler. However, there is no quantitative maintenance technique in Korea yet. Remote field eddy current testing is a non-destructive evaluation technique that is often used for inspection of inner and outer wall of tube. it can inspect with non-contact and high speed. However, it is an inspection that proceeds from inside the pipe, and the water-wall tube is not able to enter the interior. In this study, we designed and simulated an external remote field eddy current sensor suitable for water-wall tube of a fluidized - bed boiler using simulations. By obtaining a signal similar to the existing remote field eddy current test, the criteria for the external remote field eddy current sensor design can be presented.

  • Water toxicity monitoring based on the continuous cultivation of Photobacterium phorphoreum is presented. Normally, after 10 days of operation, a dark variant, which emits no light, appears and dominates the population, resulting in a rapid decrease in bioluminescence. Therefore, to overcome this problem, a fluidized-bed reactor is used in which alginate-immobilized cells are grown and leaking cells are continuously released into the effluent Experimental results revealed that the dominance of dark variants was suppressed inside the immobilized beads, thereby mitigating the rapid loss of bioluminescence. Plus, a high dilution rate (1.2 h$\^$-1/) prevented the occurrence of other microbial contamination in the reactor The concentration and bioluminescence of the released cells were sufficient to measure the water toxicity for more than 4 weeks.

  • The bio-oil produced from the fast pyrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass contains a high amount of oxygenates, causing variation in the properties of bio-oil, such as instability, high acidity, and low heating value, reducing the quality of the bio-oil. Consequently, an upgrading process should be recommended ensuring that these bio-oils are widely used as fuel sources. Catalytic fast pyrolysis has attracted a great deal of attention as a promising method for producing upgraded bio-oil from biomass feedstock. In this study, the fast pyrolysis of tulip tree was performed in a bubbling fluidized-bed reactor under different reaction temperatures, with and without catalysts, to investigate the effects of pyrolysis temperature and catalysts on product yield and bio-oil quality. The system used silica sand, ferric oxides (Fe2O3 and Fe3O4), and H-ZSM-5 as the fluidized-bed material and nitrogen as the fluidizing medium. The liquid yield reached the highest value of 49.96 wt% at 450 ℃, using Fe2O3 catalyst, compared to 48.45 wt% for H-ZSM-5, 47.57 wt% for Fe3O4 and 49.03 wt% with sand. Catalysts rejected oxygen mostly as water and produced a lower amount of CO and CO2, but a higher amount of H2 and hydrocarbon gases. The catalytic fast pyrolysis showed a high ratio of H2/CO than sand as a bed material.

  • The characteristics of wastewater treatment according to operating condition of indirectly aerated fluidized bed filled with sand media were studied experimentally, and the obtained results were as follows; 1. During be operated under the BOD loading rate, $4.5kg-BOD/m^3{\cdot}day$, effluent SS according to the increase of recirulation velocities was gradually decreased. 2. According to the increase of media concentration, sludge convertion rate was gradually increased. 3. Under the same BOD loading rate, according to the increase of recirulation velocities, F/M ratio was gradually increased, however, sludge convertion rate was greatly decreased. On the other hand, inffluent BOD concentration has not an important effect. 4. Under the constant recirulation velocities, according to the increase of BOD loading rate, sludge convertion rate was gradually increased. 5. Under the same BOD loading rate, according to the increase of recirulation velocities, oxygen consumpion rate of microorgnism was gradually increased.

  • This study is aimed to characterize the combustion behavior of solid fuel in the various types of the combustors: stoker, rotary kiln and fluidized bed type combustors. Three different types of reduced-scale combustors are introduced, and temperatures and flue gas compositions are measured for various fuel sizes, water contents, initial temperature, and air flow rates. In case of the rotary kiln combustor, effects of rotating speed of the combustor are also investigated. Mean carbon conversion time (MCCT) and flame propagation rate (FPR) are used for the quantitative analysis. It is revealed that the reaction rates of the fuel are significantly influenced by the fuel characteristics, type of the combustors and air flow rate. Major design parameters for each type of the combustors are summarized through the reduced-scaled model analysis.

  • Generally, the economic concept of optimized design and operating conditions in fluidized bed heat exchangers can hardly be realized. Because the lack of fundamental knowledge about the particle flows, the optimum design of the fluidized bed heat exchanger is rather limited. In the present work, measurements are made on pressure drops and friction factors in the horizontal circular tube with solid particles in the circulating water. Two different solid particles of diameters of 3mm and 4mm are covered. The Reynolds numbers are ranged from 10,000 to 45,000. It is concluded that the friction factors for the particles of 4mm diameter are much higher than those for the particles of 3mm diameter. And at the lower particle concentration, the friction factors are strongly influenced by the fluid velocity rather than the particle concentration; However, the effect of the particle concentration on friction factors is also significantly higher at a higher particle concentration operating condition.

  • Wastewater heat recovery heat pump systems use heated wastewater from public baths or factories as the heat pump's heat source. Generally, this system uses a bare tube evaporator. In the heat transfer process from wastewater to refrigerant, thermal resistance is caused primarily by fouling deposits on the outside surface of tube. Fouling directly increases thermal resistance and decreases heat pump efficiency. Thus, it is desirable to eliminate fouling. In this study, we fabricated a fouling mitigation device using a bubbling fluidized bed with cleaning sponge balls in the wastewater bath. Experimental conditions were as follows: $20^{\circ}C$ cold-water temperature, $40^{\circ}C$ wastewater temperature, 100 L/h cold water flow rate, and $0.161m^2$ heat exchanger surface area. Experimental results showed that the thermal resistance of fouling decreased by 56% with the fluidized bed alone and by 86% with both the fluidized bed and cleaning sponge balls.

  • Recently, the production of circulating fluidized bed combustion ash has been increased in thermal power plants. The addition of limestone for the desulfurizing effect of circulating fluidized bed boiler ash increases the content of CaO and $SO_3$ contained in ash, which is higher than the free fly ash in general fly ash. Unlike conventional fly ash, the circulating fluidized bed combustion ash has a high reactivity when it comes into contact with water due to its hydraulic properties and high free-CaO content. The aim of this study is to investigate the possibility of non-sintered binder by using self-cementing properties of circulating fluidized bed combustion ash. The mechanical and hydration characteristics were investigated according to the content of CFBC ash. In addition, the effects of gymsum type and content on the compressive strength and micro-structure of non-sintered binder pastes.
