Objectives: The study sought to identify the perception of schoolchildren's parents concerning an approval on the expansion implementation of community water fluoridation program in Gimhae, Korea. Methods: Questionnaires were distributed to schoolchildren's parents in Gimhae in 2008. Responses were collected from 1,703 parents. The standard questionnaire of Ministry of Health and Welfare was used and items were socioeconomic variables, water used for drinking and cooking, awareness on the fluoridation program and approval on the expansion implementation of fluoridation program at the region of Myeongdong water plant. Significance was analyzed by chi-square test and multiple logistic analysis. Results: Of parents, 1.9% used plain tap water and 39.8% used boiled tap water for drinking and 50.0% used tap water for cooking. 58.0% of parents were aware of fluoridation program with 27.1% being aware of the implementation of the program in Gimhae. 74.5% approved the expansion implementation of the program to the region of Myeong-dong water plant. Significant variables associated to approving the expansion implementation of program were age, gender, residence period in Gimhae, occupation and awareness of the program. Conclusion: The expansion implementation of fluoridation program in Gimhae is desirable for caries prevention because of the majority of schoolchildren's parents' approval.
The quantification of dry season evaporation in regions, where the magnitude of dry season flows is key to the regional water supply, is essential for good water management. Also, tree transpiration has a significant role in the water balance of a catchment whenever it is tree populated, especially in water limited environments. Such is the case in the Middle Mountains of Nepal where dry season flows play a significant role in downstream water provisioning and their proper functioning is key to the welfare of millions of people. This research seeks to study the transpiration of a pine forest stand in the Jikhu Khola Watershed in the Middle Mountains of Nepal. To the author's knowledge, no single study has been made so far to estimate the dry season evaporation from the planted forest stand in the Middle Mountains of Nepal. The study was carried out in planted pine forest embedded within the Jikhu Khola Catchment. Field campaigns of sap flow measurements were carried out from September, 2010 to February, 2011 in the selected plot of 15*15m dimension, to characterize dry season evaporation. This was done by measuring sap fluxes and sapwood areas over the six trees of different Diameter at Breast Height (DBH) classes. The sap flux was assessed using Granier's thermal dissipation probe (TDP) technique while sapwood area was determined using several incremental core(s) taken with a Pressler borer and immediately dyeing with methyl orange for estimating the actual depth of sapwood area. Transpiration of the plot was estimated by considering the contribution of each tree class. For this purpose, sap flux density, sapwood area and the proportion of total canopy area were determined for each tree class of the selected plot. From these data, hourly and diurnal transpiration rates for the plot were calculated for experimental period. Finally, Cienciala model was parameterized using the data recorded by the ADAS and other terrain data collected in the field. The calibrated model allowed the extrapolation of Sap flux density (v) over a six month period, from September 2010 to February 2011. The model given sap flux density was validated with the measured sap flux density from Grainier method.
The stability of corn oil-in-water emulsions coated by milk proteins, sodium caseinate (CAS), or whey protein concentrate (WPC), was compared under the environmental stress of pH change. Emulsions were prepared at 0.1 of protein:oil because the majority of droplets were relatively small ($d_{32}=0.34$ and $0.35\;{\mu}m$, $d_{43}=0.65$ and $0.37\;{\mu}m$ for CAS- and WPC-emulsions, respectively) and there was no evidence of depletion flocculation. As the pH of the emulsions was gradually dropped from 7 to 3, there was no significant difference in the electrical charges of the emulsion droplets between the 2 types of emulsions. However, laser diffraction measurements, microscopy measurements, and creaming stability test indicated that WPC-emulsions were more stable to droplet aggregation than CAS-emulsions under the same circumstance of pH change. It implies that factors other than electrostatic repulsion should contribute to the different magnitude of response to pH change.
As part of the development of building technology to improve the living performance closely related with lifestyle to Realize the Housing Welfare, the standard manual for the prevention and maintenance of water leaks in the underground structures of apartment buildings consists of Part 1 and Part 2. In this study, Sparassis crispa(cauliflower mushroom), which is rich in beta-glucan, was pulverized using ultrafine grinding technology for its potential utilization as a diverse food ingredient. The physical and antioxidant properties of cauliflower mushroom powder were evaluated at various grinding times. The results showed that as the grinding time of cauliflower mushroom increased, the average particle size significantly decreased (p<0.05). Additionally, the water-holding capacity, swelling capacity, and water solubility index of cauliflower mushroom increased significantly(p<0.05). Based on the analysis mentioned above, cauliflower mushroom prepared as a superfine powder for 5 minutes exhibited superior physical and chemical properties as well as antioxidant characteristics and is expected to be widely used in various foods.
Cassia obtusifolia L. is commonly used as medicinal foods to treat gastrointestinal disease in many countries. This study evaluated the anti-constipation effects of ethanolic extract of Cassia obtusifolia L. in rats with loperamide-induced constipation. Diffferent concentrations of ethanolic extract of Cassia obtusifolia L. (0, 10, 250, and 500 mg/kg) was administered to rat orally once daily for 3 weeks following loperamide treatment. Six-week-old Sprague-Dawley rats (N=25) were randomly divided into five groups: normal control and experimental groups and injected loperamide intraperitoneally to induce constipation in the latter four experimental groups. Following the induction of loperamide-induced constipation, a marked decrease was observed in the fecal weight and water content discharged for over 1 week and intestinal transit time while an increase was observed in the number of fecal pellets remaining in the colonic lumen as compared with the normal control group. These conditions were significantly alleviated following the administration of the two doses (250 and 500 mg/kg) of ethanolic extract of Cassia obtusifolia L. when compared to the loperamide-treated (constipation control) group. More specifically, the number of fecal pellets in the colon was 3, 5, 4, 2.8, and 1.2 in the five groups, respectively and the corresponding GIT ratio was 70.77, 56.59, 58.67, 66.81, and 72.10%, respectively. The fecal water content, transit distance, and GIT ratio in the high-dose treatment group were significantly higher than that in the medium-dose treatment group, but a significant decrease in the number of fecal pellets in the colon. In conclusion, the Cassia obtusifolia L. extract is suggested to have beneficial effects as a therapeutic and preventive strategy to alleviate constipation and to relieve the symptoms of constipation such as pain, flatulence, distention, bloating, and unpleasant taste.
Wellbeing is a new trend to modern people and Spa facilities are an appropriate space to them seeking a wellbeing life. Spa facilities will be increased in demand as a value of a public welfare and wellbeing life and the study of them is required. Therefore this study was to analysed domestic and foreign spa programs and characteristic spaces. When synthesizing many spa programs they were divided into three parts: hydrotherapy as a healing therapy using water, touch therapy as a type of massage using a manual and subsidiary equipment and mind therapy to heal spirit. Space of spa facilities were divided into three parts: the supporting part, the relaxing and mediating parts and the room for therapy. The supporting parts included a front desk, a consulting room, lockers, bath room and acceptance rooms etc and they were arranged in entrance space generally. The rooms for therapy were composed with a room for hydrotherapy using water, rooms for touch therapy and rooms for mind therapy refreshing a spirit and they were established contiguously being used efficiently. The mediating parts provided spaces for relaxation and waiting place between therapies and they were established in independent space generally but they are paid attention at good spaces forming the community of visitors and giving a characteristic images for the spa. Spa has been divided into several types in accordance with age of visitors for example children, young people, middle aged people and aged people. It has equipped with complex functions from welfare to medical. Therefore it is thought that many studies of each facilities become accomplished to propose suitable interior design.
The behavior of declawed emus in a farm environment has not been described despite its importance in the husbandry and welfare of the emu. This study examined whether declawing of emus causes chronic pain resulting in permanent changes in the locomotor and general behavior of declawed yearling emus compared to emus not declawed. One group of 40 emus were declawed on the day of hatch by removing the distal phalangeal joint using a Lyon beak-trimming machine. Another group of 40 emus not declawed were the controls. Declawed emus one year of age were allocated to a paddock $250m{\times}125m$, while the control group was placed in an adjoining paddock of the same dimensions. One hour video records of individual emus from each treatment were made from 08:00 and 17:00 h over 2 periods; firstly when food and water was available and secondly during a period when food and water was not available after being withdrawn overnight. Inactive, ingestive, posture change, grooming, aggressive and locomotor behaviors were monitored from the videotape. There was no behavioral evidence to indicate loss of locomotor ability of declawed emus or to suggest declawed emus were suffering from severe chronic pain as indicated by declawed emus engaging in significantly more bouts (p<0.05) and time of searching (p<0.05). Declawed emus also engaged in less stereotype pacing (p<0.05) indicating they were under less stress and not as frustrated as control birds which engaged in more step pushing behavior (p<0.05). Modelling analysis showed that pecking behavior in birds was most closely related to foraging behavior. Birds subject to pecking attacks demonstrated higher levels of stereotype behavior presumably as a method to cope with stress. The behavioral evidence in this study would indicate that declawing does not compromise the locomotor ability of emus and has the benefit of improving the social structure in the groups by reducing stereotype behavior and aggression.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to analyze contents of beer advertisements in Korea. Research has suggested the influence of alcohol advertisements on viewer's drinking behavior, attitude, and expectancies. Korea's policy on alcohol advertising relies on limited government regulation and self regulation among alcohol industries. This study is expected to lay a foundation for further discussion on regulating alcohol advertising in Korea. Methods: A total of 81 beer advertisements broadcasted between 2008 and 2011 were analyzed. The contents were categorized into themes (22 themes were used), models, and presentation techniques. Results: The themes most frequently appeared in beer advertisements were quality (66.7%), relaxation (44%), camaraderie (41%), and individuality (39.5%), respectively. Analysis of models revealed that most advertisements had more than three models (64.2%), and most of them were in their 20s (68%). As much as 82% of advertisements used celebrity models. Analysis on presentation techniques showed that 91.4% displayed drinking scenes, and 27% displayed gulping down the whole bottle or the glass. Finally, about 10% of ads showed drinking in hazardous situations such as during water sports. Conclusion: The results of the study reflect the minimal regulation of alcohol advertising in Korea. The need for joint effort by legislators, researchers, alcohol industries, and advertising agencies is discussed in order to establish healthier drinking environment.
