  • During the full-scale water treatment operation at "G" Water Treatment Plant in Seoul, we investigated changes in pore volume distribution and specific surface area of GAC with time. The pore volume of the used GAC decreased to the level below 0.6 cc/g while that of the brand new GAC was ranged 0.7~0.9 cc/g. The specific surface area of GAC pores changed within the range between $1100{\sim}1200m^2/g$ and $700{\sim}800m^2/g$. Bacteria attached to the surface of GAC shows a gradual increase ($0.4{\time}10^6{\sim}8.5{\time}10^6CFU/g$) under scanninig electron microscope (SEM). TOC removal was enhanced due to growth of the attached bacteria on GAC. It was found that TOC removal was closely related with physical parameters (pore volume, specific surface area) linearly under the investigated conditions. The used GAC need to be exchanged into new one or re-generated to remove organic matters (TOC) effectively from the finished drinking water.

  • Measurements of backscattered intensity were made over a shallow water using 300 ㎑and 1200 ㎑ bottom mounted ADCP (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler) to determine the temporal variability of vertical distribution of high-frequency volume scattering strength (Sv). The variability of Sv in relatively deep water column(85 m and 113 m was due to the daily vertical migration, probably of larger zooplankton. However it was not found with 1200㎑ data at shallow water column. From the empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis using 1200㎑ data, the vertical distribution of the first mode eigenvectors of Sv is characterized by the presence of the maximum values near the bottom of the water.

  • We have studied a relationship between the pattern of complex modulus change versus internal phase volume ratio and the rheological consistency of concentrated W/O emulsions with Magnesium Sulfate in the range 0.0 to 0.5 wt% and with different oil polarities, respectively. The rheological consistency with time of concentrated W/O emulsion was checked using Fudoh Rheometer and the coalescence of deformed water droplets was examined using polarized light microscope(LEICA DMRP). To find the pattern of complex modulus change of the concentrated emulsions versus internal phase volume ratio, the effect of varying water phase volume fraction from 0.78 up to 0.85 on viscoelastic measurements was investigated using rotational rheometer (HAAKE Rheostress RS 50). The rheological consistency was mainly destroyed by the coalescence of the deformed water droplets. The greater the increase of complex modulus was, the less coalescence occurred and the more consistent the concentrated emulsions were. And the pattern of complex modulus increase versus volume ratio has been explained with the resistance to coalescence of the deformed interfacial film of water droplets in concentrated W/O emulsion.

  • Effect of different alkane based solvents on the stability of emulsion liquid membrane was investigated using normal alkanes (n-hexane, n-heptane, n-octane and n-decane) under various operating parameters of surfactant concentration, emulsification time, internal phase concentration, volume ratio of internal phase to organic phase, volume ratio of emulsion phase to external phase and stirring speed. Results of stability revealed that emulsion liquid membrane containing n-octane as solvent and span-80 (5 % (w/w)) as emulsifying agent presented the highest amount of emulsion stability (the lowest breakage) compared with other solvents; however, operating parameters (surfactant concentration (5% (w/w)), emulsification time (6 min), internal phase concentration (0.05 M), volume ratio of internal phase to organic phase (1/1), volume ratio of emulsion phase to external phase (1/5) and stirring speed (300 rpm)) were also influential on improving the stability (about 0.2% breakage) and on achieving the most stable emulsion. The membrane with the highest stability was employed to extract acridine orange with various concentrations (10, 20 and 40 ppm) from water. The emulsion liquid membrane prepared with n-octane as the best solvent almost removed 99.5% of acridine orange from water. Also, the prepared liquid membrane eliminated completely (100%) other cationic dyes (methylene blue, methyl violet and crystal violet) from water demonstrating the efficacy of prepared emulsion liquid membrane in treatment of dye polluted waters.

  • This study uses time series analyses to evaluate fluctuation of water levels in a geothermal water well due to pumping, in relation to rainfall at Dongrae hot-spring site on the southeastern coast of tile Korean peninsula. The volume of water pumped from the public study wells ranges from 542 to 993 m$^3$/month, and the minimum water level ranged from 35 to 144.7 m during the measured period. Autocorrelation analysis was conducted for the withdrawal rate at the public wells, water levels and rainfall. The autocorrelation of the withdrawal rate shows distinct periodicity with 3 months of lag time, the autocorrelation of rainfall shows weak linearity and short memory with 1 months of lag time, and the autocorrelation of water levels shows weak linearity and short memory with 2 months of lag time. The cross-correlation between the pumping volume and the minimum water level shows a maximum value 1 at a delayed time of 34 months. The cross-correlation between rainfall and the minimum water level shows a maximum value of 0.39 at a delayed time of 32 months.

  • Distillation is one of many processes that can be used for the purification of water. It requires an energy input such as heat and solar radiation is a possible source of energy. In this process, water is evaporated, thus separating water vapor from the solute. The vapor is then condensed to pure water. The temperature of the water, the cavity of the enclosure and the surface of the glass was measured everyday. Fifteen points were chosen for the temperature measure using a thermocouple. The inner wall and the bottom of each still was painted black for good absorption of heat. The enforced glass was used for the cover for the entering of solar energy. The size of all of the water baths was the same, but the glass of the rectangular form had a tilted angle. In the case of fine or general weather, the volume of condensed water produced by $45^{\circ}$ and $60^{\circ}$ is very irregular compared to that of $15^{\circ}$ and $30^{\circ}$, In case of a rainy day, the occurrence of the volume of condensed water was similar to that of $15^{\circ}$ and $30^{\circ}$, but the volume of condensed water produced by $30^{\circ}$ was the highest.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the respiratory function of patients with stroke was different on the ground and under water. Methods: We recruited 14 adults who had experienced a stroke (12 male, 2 female) for our study. We measured forced vital capacity, forced expiratory volume at one second, maximum inspiratory pressure, and maximum expiratory pressure when the participants breathed on the ground and under water. On the ground, the participants were safely supported using a table and chair and were measured in a standing posture. For measuring under water, the participants were immersed in water in a standing position to clavicle height. The participants were measured while standing, and the assistant supported them when they needed help. The collected data were analyzed by a paired t-test. Results: Forced vital capacity and forced expiratory volume at one second were significantly lower in water than on the ground when breathing at maximum. Maximum inspiratory pressure was not significantly different when standing on the ground or in water, but maximum expiratory pressure was significantly higher in water than on the ground. Conclusion: It has been confirmed that the hydrostatic pressure affecting stroke patients immersed in water affects the forced expiratory volume at one second while reducing the forced vital capacity and increasing the maximum expiratory pressure.

  • Generally, when Fly-Ash was used as replacement material of cement in concrete, it might occur retardation of setting and hardening. So, it is unable to use a large amount of Fly-Ash as replacement for cement. However, if it is used as replacement material of fine aggregate in concrete, we can use a large amount of Fly-Ash and settle a problem of natural-aggregate exhaustion. Furthermore, engineering properties of High Volume Fly-Ash Concrete Is better than that of plain concrete But, the larger Fly-Ash is replaced, the more fluidity of High Volume Fly-Ash Concrete decrease, because porous organization of Fly-Ash adsorb water and Superplasticizer. In this study, after appending additional water to High Volume Fly-Ash Concrete in proportion to weight of Fly-Ash, we intend to find proper ratio which doesn't affect strength and satisfy fluidity As a result of this study, it was found that fluidity of mortar with 25~28 percentage of additional water was satisfied with fluidity of plain mortar, and compressive strength of that was similar to plain mortar's

  • Flow over a bluff body is an attractive research field in thermal engineering. In the present study, laminar flow over a confined heated square cylinder using CuO-Water nanofluid is considered. Unsteady two-dimensional Navier-Stokes and energy equations are solved numerically using finite volume method (FVM). Recent correlations for the thermal conductivity and viscosity of nanofluids, which are function of nanoparticle volume fraction, temperature and nanoparticle diameter, have been employed. The results of numerical solution are obtained for Richardson number, nanoparticle volume fractions and nanoparticle diameters ranges of 0-1, 1-5% and 30-100 nm respectively for a fixed Reynolds number of Re = 150. At a given volume concentration, the investigations reveal that the decreasing in size of nanoparticles produces an increase in heat transfer rates from the square cylinder and a decrease in amplitude of the lift coefficient. Also, the increment of Nusselt number is more pronounced at higher concentrations and higher Richardson numbers.

  • This study experimentally investigated the improvement of bond strength and durability of concrete containing high volume fly ash. Concrete mixtures made with 0%, 25% and 60% replacement of cement with class F fly ash were prepared. Water-binder ratios ranged from 0.28 to 0.72. The compressive, flexural and pullout bond strength, the resistance to chloride-ion penetration, and the water permeability of concrete were measured and presented. Test results indicate that except for the concretes at early ages, the mechanical properties, bond strength, and the durability-related chloride-ion permeability and water permeability of concrete containing high volume (60% cement replacement) fly ash were obviously superior to the concrete without fly ash at later ages of beyond 56 days. The enhanced bond strength for the high volume fly-ash concrete either with or without steel confinement is a significant finding which might be valuable for the structural application.
