  • A variable-flow-rate balancing valve has been developed and optimized to apply to a distributor in a hot-water heating system. Fluid dynamic performance of the system was evaluated by comparing the results with the previous pressure difference control valve (PDCV) system. In view of the variations of pressure drop and flow rate according to the sequential closing of the control valves, the present system which is named "smart system distributor", is very stable without a certain flow rate concentration. The level of pressure drop variation is also low as compared with the previous system with a PDCV. In view of the occurrence of cavitation, the present system is quite superior to the previous system because the instantaneous pressures at all sections are much higher than the vapor pressure. On the other hand, the previous system has a possibility of cavitation when one or more control valves are closed.

  • A traditional propeller can easily become entangled with floating objects while operating. In this paper, we present a newly developed Electromagnetic-valve-control-based Water-jet Propulsion System (ECWPS) for an unmanned surface cleaning vessel that can be flexibly controlled via a Micro Control Unit (MCU). The double-structure was adapted to the unmanned surface cleaning vessel for floating-collection missions. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software for operating effect simulation was also used to reveal the working principle of the ECWPS under different conditions. Neglecting the assembly technique, the design level, controlling strategy, and maneuvering performance of the ECWPS reached unprecedented levels. The ECWPS mainly consists of an Electromagnetic-valve Array (EA), pipeline network, control system, and water-jet source. Both CFD analyses and experimental results show that the hydraulic characteristic of the ECWPS was predicted reasonably, which has enormous practical value and development prospects.

  • As an early warning system to reduce the damage of aquacultured mollusks due to low salinity water, we investigated the possibility of a biomonitoring system measuring the shell valve movement (SVM) of Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) by using the Hall element sensor. In high salinity water of 27 psu, SVMs of Pacific oyster showed spikes which mean a relatively fast closing condition after opened condition of average 10-15 mm, and then the SVM showed back to opening condition slower than closing speed. In water salinity of 20-27 psu, the SVMs were similar to that of 27 psu. However, below 17 psu, it showed abnormal valve movements such as spending more time for shell closure. In 10 psu, we could not detected SVMs due to closed condition during experiment periods. Thus, if we quickly detect abnormal environmental variations like low salinity using bio-monitoring of SVM, it may be contribute to increased productivity by dramatically reducing damages in aquaculture.

  • In case of massive water leakage, it's crucial for field manager to quickly positioning the problematic valve and related ones. However, it's not easy for the system to find the corresponding valve and even if it's found, it can not respond quickly because it can't know the relevant information immediately. In this paper, we implement the system for identifying sluice valve positions using GPS and AR techniques. The proposed system is composed of hand held android device, remote database server and data acquisition device for DB creation. We utilize the android device's sensors including GPS, gyro, accelerometer, magnetic sensor. The system identifies the valve with matching between the position data from the remote database server, and current GPS locations of device. We use AR techniques to overlay the graphics pattern of valve positions and some additional informations on captured real scene. With this system, it will be fast and accurate for maintenance of sluice valve of municipal water system.

  • Recently, due to the deterioration of watermains and the detachment of scale which is accumulated on the watermain surface, water quality accidents in a water supply network occur frequently. As scale accumulated on watermains is stabilized, it may not cause water quality accidents under the normal operating condition. However, due to water hammer or transient flow caused by the abrupt velocity and/or direction of flow change, it can be detached from the watermain surface resulting in water quality accidents. To prevent these kinds of water quality accidents, it is required to remove scale by watermain cleaning regularly. Many researches about flushing which is the most popular water cleaning method are focused on the desirable velocity criteria and the cleaning condition to accomplish the effect of flushing whereas less amount of research effort is given to develop a method to consider whether the desirable velocity for flushing can be obtained before flushing is performed. During flushing, the major and minor headloss is occurred when flushing water flows through a hydrant or drain valve. These headloss may slow down the velocity of flushing water so that it can reduce the flushing effect. Thus, in this study, we suggest a method to simulate the flow velocity of flushing water using "MinorLoss Coefficient" and "Emitter Coefficient" in EPANET. The suggested method is applied to a sample network and the water supply network of "A" city in Korea to compare the flushing effect between "flushing through a hydrant" and "flushing through a drain valve". In case of "flushing through a hydrant", if the hydraulic condition ocurring from a watermain pipe connecting to the inlet pipe of a hydrant to the outlet of a hydrant is not considered, the actual flowrate and velocity of a flow is less than the simulated flowrate and velocity of a flow. In case of "flushing through a drain valve", the flushing velocity and flowrate can be easily simulated and the difference between the simulated and the actual velocity and flowrate is not significant. Also, "flushing through a drain valve" is very effective to flushing a long-length pipe section because of its efficiency to obtain the flushing velocity. However, the number and location of a drain valve is limited compared to a hydrant so that "flushing through a drain valve" has a limited application in the field. For this reason, the engineer should consider various field conditions to come up with a proper flushing plan.

  • The numerical study on the waterhammer was carried out for the intake pumping station of the metropolitan water supply 6th stage project. Because the waterhammer problems as a result of the pump power failure were the most important, these situations were carefully investigated. The surge tank and the stand pipes effectively protected the tunnels md the downstream region of pipeline from the pressure surge. In case the moment of inertia of the pump and motor was above $5080\;kg{\cdot}m^2$, the column separation did not occur in the pipeline between the pumping station and the inlet of 1st tunnel. As the moment of inertia increased, the pressure surges decreased in the pipeline conveying raw water. The pump control valve was chosen as the main surge suppression device for the intake pumping station. After power failure, the valve disc should be rapidly closed in 2.5 seconds and controlled the final closure to 15 seconds by the oil dashpot. If the slamming happened to the pump control valve, there was some danger of this system damaging. As the reverse flow through the valve increased, the upsurge extremely increased.

  • Pipe network of hot water heat supply system in an apartment house was analyzed. Flowrate and supply heat capacity of each household in which constant flowrate balancing valve is installed in a single zone system were calculated and the results were investigated. In the existing piping system, the non-uniformity of heat supply with floors due to the static pressure and temperature difference between supply main and return main can not be avoided and this tendency get intense with the increase of the height of building. The non-uniformity of heat supply can be prevented by the installation of balancing valve at each household, however if the performance of supply pump is not sufficient to overcome the energy loss due to the installation of balancing valve for constant flow rate or if the selection of the valve capacity is not adequate, the valves will may lose their controllability.

  • Surge pressure is created by rapid change of flow rate due to operation of hydraulic component or accident of pipeline. Proper control of surge pressure in distribution system is important because it can damage pipeline and may have the potential to degrade water quality by pipe leakage due to surge pressure. Surge relief valve(SRV) is one of the most widely used devices and it is important to determine proper parameters for SRV's installation and operation. In this research, determining optimum parameters affecting performance of the SRV were investigated. We proposed the methodology for finding combination of parameters for best performance of the SRV. Therefore, the objective function for evaluate fitness of candidate parameters and surge pressure simulation software was developed to validate proposed parameters for SRV. The developed software was integrated into genetic algorithm(GA) to find best combination of parameters.

  • As the water supply facilities are recently getting larger, the domestic waterworks become multi-regional water supply system. Large water supply facilities generally consist of the intake pumping station, water treatment plant and water supply/distribution facilities. Although the pumping stations and the pipeline systems are used to pump up water, it often happens pipeline damage and flooding accident by the water hammer. In this paper, the intake pumping station is guaranteed by both the computer simulation and the field test analysis. This study is contributed to the safe operation program for the pumping station in which results of the adjustment on the safety plan of the pumping station, the air valve and the valve closing time.
