  • This research presents the results of a study on the trajectory characteristics of barges with different configurations. A towing experiment was carried out in a water tank with three types of barges in two cases: with and without skegs. The effects of towline length on trajectory were also observed. This study analyzed and compared the length and amplitude of trajectory shapes for each barge in various combinations. It revealed that the trajectory of a barge is influenced not only by skegs but also by the length of the towline. As a result of this work, it can be clearly seen that skegs significantly improve the course stability of a towed barge regardless of differences in bow shape or towline length. Water tank test results also indicated that the length of a towline plays a key role in affecting the trajectory characteristics of a barge-towing system. The length and amplitude of the slewing motion of a barge increased with an increase in the length of the towline connected to the barge. Validation of the present research results should be carried out by further experiments and computational comparisons in the near future.

  • It is important to understand the trajectory of structure in launching process because of the short time of launching process may result in unexpected accidents or damage to structures. The high risk of structural failure is not avoidable without the fully comprehension of changing forces in launching procedure. The commercial software can evaluate the motion of launching event in calm water condition but there is the limitation of research application because of the programmed commercial software. The launching process of the spar hull is suggested with stage concept that is divided into 10 stages in time domain. A force equilibrium diagram is derived for each stage where the changes of force vector and motion characteristics take place. In particular, the effects of changes in buoyancy and drag force due to the progressive submergence of the spar hull are taken into account by means of a touch length concept. The results contained in this paper provide the valuable information of the trajectory motion evaluation with suggested methods in spar launching process with sliding barge. Furthermore, the presented stage concept and touch length concept will provide basic knowledge for understanding launching process and help to develop further research area for launching analysis.

  • Gas submerged jet is an outstanding thermohydraulic phenomenon in pool scrubbing of fission products during a severe nuclear accident. Experiments were performed on the hydraulic characteristics in the ranges of air mass flux 0.1-1400 kg/m2s and nozzle diameter 10-80 mm. The results showed that the dependence of inlet pressure on the mass flux follows a power law in subsonic jets and a linear law in sonic jets. The effect of nozzle submerged depth was negligible. The isolated bubbling regime, continuous bubbling regime, transition regime, and jetting regime were observed in turn, as the mass flux increased. In the bubbling regime and jetting regime, the air volume fraction distribution was approximately symmetric in space. Themelis model could capture the jet trajectory well. In the transition regime, the air volume fraction distribution loses symmetry due to the bifurcated secondary plume. The Li correlation and Themelis model showed sufficient accuracy for the prediction of jet penetration length.

  • In this study we investigated the risk of electric shock and the possibility of current flow from the sprayed water when fire took place in a photovoltaic (PV) installed building. The sprayed water was analysed by using a mathematical model, a water spray system for water conductivity was made. With changing the initial water flow rate the water resistance was measured, and compared with the numerically expected value. As the experimental and numerical computing result, we were able to define the requirements that must be considered in the fire of PV systems.

  • A plane buoyant jet discharged vertically upward into a crossflow is analyzed by numerical solution of the governing equations of continuity, momentum and constituent transport. The turbulent transport is modelled by the Prandtl's mixing length theory. In the numerical solution procedure, the governing equations are transformed by stream function and vorticity transport, non-dimensionalyzed by discharge velocity, slot width, and parameters representing flow characteristics, and solved by Gauss-Seidel iteration method with successive underrelaxation. The numerical experiments were performed for the region of established flow of buoyant jet in the range of discharge densimetric Froude number of 4 to 32 and in the range of velocity ratio of 8 to 15, which is the ratio of discharge velocity to crossflow velocity. Variations of velocities and temperatures, flow patterns and vorticity patterns of receiving water due to buoyant jet were investigated. Also investigated are the effects of velocity ratio and discharge densimetric Froude number on the trajectories of buoyant jet. Computed are velocities, temperatures and local densimetric Froude numbers along the trajectory of the buoyant jet. Spreading rate and dispersion ratio were analyzed in terms of discharge densimetric Froude number, local densimetric Froude number and distance from the source along the jet trajectory. It was noted that the similarity law holds in both the profiles of velocity and temperatures across the jet trajectory and the integral type analysis of Gaussian distribution is applicable.

  • This paper describes the relationship between the behavior of the snakehead ( Channa arps) of 44cm long and the environmental noise levels due to the piling work. The experiment is conducted in the aquafarm located near Asan lake, Pyongtaek in 1993. The fish trajectory is obtained by a biotelemetry system in which a pulsed ultrasonic pinger attached onto the dorsal is tracked three dimensionally, and the noise and the vibration levels both in air and in water are measured. The results of this study are as follows: 1) The noise levels in water and in air and the vibration level measured at a distance of 90m from the noise source, increased by 36.5dB $(re\;l{\mu}Pa)$, 2308$(re\;0.0002{\mu}bar)$ and $5.9{\mu}m$ repectively compared to the levers before piling. 2) The highest variation of the swimming speed was observed right after the piling works and the width of variation decreased with the elapsed time. The average speeds of the fish before and during the works were measured as 0.8 times and 1.1 times of the body length, respectively. 3) It is found that the fish escapes into the mud of the aquafarm when a heavy shock wave occurred. Consequently, the heavy shock by the piling works could produce a considerably unfavorable effect to the fish.

  • In order to analyze the movement characteristics of suspended solid(SS) in harbor construction, we investigate the generation and movement processes of the SS for the landfill construction by direct casting method and the grab dredging construction which is the most frequent process in harbor construction. We find that the SS is generated into a very high concentration right after the direct casting of landfill soil and continued up to 60 minutes in the landfill construction using the direct casting method with dredged materials by a ship of 700-tonnage. In the grab dredging construction, the SS is generated in a high density of concentration near at its source regardless of water depth, formed belt and diffused up to 700m along the trajectory of tidal current. Based on the result of the present study, it is recommended for the mitigation of SS generation that the silt protector be deployed near at construction site close enough to block the diffusion of SS and the body length of silt protector be long enough to mitigate the SS diffusion in the bottom layer.
