The acoustic power is used as a primary index characterizing underwater sound sources and could be defined by its source level. The source level has been assessed using various experimental techniques such as the reverberation time method and reverberant tank plot method. While the reverberation time method requires reverberation time data extracted in a preliminary experiment in a reverberant water tank, the reverberant tank plot method only needs acoustic pressure data directly obtained at the reverberation water tank. In this research, these experimental techniques were studied in comparative experiments to estimate the source levels of underwater sources in a reverberant water tank. This paper summarizes the basic theories and procedures of these experimental techniques and presents the experimental results for an underwater source in a long cuboid water tank using each technique, along with a discussion.

In the current residential building, hot water supply system consumes the second largest energy in order to make the thermal comport condition of residential space. The more residential environment improves the more the demand for hot water and water consumption is increasing gradually. So this study examines the possibility of applying the recirculation for individual hot water supply system compared with the existing method for waiting time for hot water, wasted water and energy consumption. The results are as follows. (1) In case of recirculation system method the waiting time for hot water can be reduced up to $69\sim85%$ in spring and fall period and so dose up to $77\sim85%$ in winter period. (2) The total wasted water has a little change compared with the existing method which can make the total wasted water reduced about $77\sim86%$. (3) The efficiency of hot water supply system can be improved, if the method which blocks the inflow of cold water is applied, when return pump is operated to recirculate hot water in recirculation system.

It is very important to maintain a constant chlorine concentration in the post chlorination process, which is the final step in the water treatment process (hereafter WTP) before servicing water to citizens. Even though a flow meter between the filtration basin and clear well must be installed for the post chlorination process, it is not easy to install owing to poor installation conditions. In such a case, a raw water flow meter has been used as an alternative and has led to dosage errors due to detention time. Therefore, the inlet flow to the clear well is estimated by a time series neural network for the plant without a measurement value, a new residual chlorine meter is installed in the inlet of the clear well to decrease the control period, and the proposed modeling and controller to analyze the chlorine concentration change in the well is a neuro fuzzy algorithm and cascade method. The proposed algorithm led to post chlorination and chlorination improvements of 1.75 times and 1.96 times respectively when it was applied to an operating WTP. As a result, a hygienically safer drinking water is supplied with preemptive response for the time delay and inherent characteristics of the disinfection process.

It is crucial to predict water temperature for aquatic ecosystem studies and management. In this paper, we first address challenging issues in predicting water temperature in a real time manner and propose a distributed computing model to address such issues. Then, we present an Artificial Neural Network (ANN)-based water temperature prediction model developed for the Soyang River and a cyberinfrastructure system called WT-Agabus to run such prediction models in an automated and real time manner. The ANN model is designed to use only weather forecast data (air temperature and rainfall) that can be obtained by invoking the weather forecasting system at Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) and therefore can facilitate the automated and real time water temperature prediction. This paper also demonstrates how easily and efficiently the real time prediction can be implemented with the WT-Agabus prototype system.
This study was conducted to investigate the durability of carbon fiber/epoxy composites (CFRP) in a saline water environment. The carbon fiber/epoxy composites were modified to use nanoparticles such as carbon nanotubes and titanum oxide. These hybrid composites were exposed to a saline water environment for a certain period. The weight gain according to the immersion time, a quasi-static tensile test, and micro-graphic characterization were used to investigate the samples exposed to the saline water environment. The weight gains increased with increasing immersion time. The weight gains of the hybrid composites were lower than that for pure CFRP throughout the entire immersion time. The tensile strengths decreased with increasing immersion time. The tensile strengths of the hybrid composites were higher than that of the pure CFRP throughout the entire immersion time. The pure CFRP was observed to be more degraded than the hybrid composites in the saline water environment. Therefore, it was concluded that the addition of nanoparticles to CFRP could lead to improved durability in a saline water environment.
The water balance calculation in the IRL shows that fresh groundwater discharge is the primary factor, with surface runoff from gaged and ungaged areas as the second freshwater contributor. Precipitation and evaporation are almost in balance fer the entire IRL. Due to high freshwater discharge from ground-water, the annual net flow is outward from the IRL to the continental shelf of the Atlantic Ocean resulting in a relatively short flushing time, denoted as $T_{0.5}$ (50% flushing time) and $T_{0.99}$ (99% flushing time). $T_{0.5}$, and. $T_{0.99}$ without a tidal effect in the Northern IRL are 17 and 114 days, respectively, during the dry season. During the wet season, they are 10 and 65 days, respectively. Tidal flushing effects are considered in central IRL due to the proximity to Sebastian Inlet. In the Northern Central zone during dry season, $T_{0.5}$, and. $T_{0.99}$ are 6 and 43 days, respectively and during the wet season 5 and 33 days. In the Southern Central zone they are 2 and 16 days for the dry season,2 and 15 days for the wet season. High groundwater seepage into the IRL is considered to be a positive effect in maintaining relatively good water quality condition even with few narrow inlets.
It is well known that bioassay on the low organic matters in water have developed from the two methods. One is assimilable organic carbon(AOC) that makes use of the maximum growth biomass of the pure strains for the standard substrates, the other is biodegradable dissolved organic carbon(BDOC) that determines the fraction of dissolved organic carbon(DOC) available for microbial utilization. The purpose of this study was to upgrade the measurement method of BDOC in natural water or drinking water. BBOC was determined by means of the bacterial growth and the DOC decrease at the same time. The origin inoculums were used to the suspended bacteria from Han River water, The initial optimum biomass and incubation time for initial DOC were induced by variation of nutrient repression and inoculums. The time reached to minimum DOC was selected as incubation time. The initial optimum biomass for Han river water was about 1000~5000 CFU/mL, respectively. In a sufficient biomass, suitable incubation time was about 3~5 day. It was indirectly calculated BDOC on maximum growth rate by measuring growth yield of indigenous bacteria. But it was difficult to adapt growth yield coefficient because of irregular bacterial growth. The measured 3 day BDOC was close to BDOC calculated with our proposed experimental equation between DOC and BDOC. It shows that the quantification of BDOC with this experimental equation can be used indirectly.

Water contamination in a water distribution network (WDN) is harmful since it directly induces the consumer's health problem and suspends water service in a wide area. Actions need to be taken rapidly to countermeasure a contamination event. A contaminant source ident ification (CSI) is an important initial step to mitigate the harmful event. Here, a CSI approach focused on determining the contaminant intrusion possible location and time (PLoT) is introduced. One of the methods to discover the PLoT is an inverse calculation to connect all the paths leading to the report specification of a sensor. A filtering procedure is then applied to narrow down the PLoT using the results from individual sensors. First, we spatially reduce the suspect intrusion points by locating the highly suspicious nodes that have similar intrusion time. Then, we narrow the possible intrusion time by matching the suspicious intrusion time to the reported information. Finally, a likelihood-score is estimated for each suspect. Another important aspect that needs to be considered in CSI is that there are inherent uncertainties, such as the variations in user demand and inaccuracy of sensor data. The uncertainties can lead to overlooking the real intrusion point and time. To reflect the uncertainties in the CSI process, the Monte-Carlo Simulation (MCS) is conducted to explore the ranges of PLoT. By analyzing all the accumulated scores through the random sets, a spread of contaminant intrusion PLoT can then be identified in the network.
Aging water pipe networks hinder efficient management of important water service indices such as revenue water and leakage ratio due to pipe breakage and malfunctioning of pipe appurtenance. In order to control leakage in water pipe networks, various methods such as the minimum night flow analysis and sound waves method have been used. However, the accuracy and efficiency of detecting water leak by these methods need to be improved due to the increase of water consumption at night. In this study the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) technique was applied to the night water flow data of 426 days collected from a water distribution system in the interval of one hour. Based on the PCA technique, computational algorithms were developed to narrow the time windows for efficient execution of leak detection job. The algorithms were programmed on computer using the MATLAB. The presented techniques are expected to contribute to the efficient management of water pipe networks by providing more effective time windows for the detection of the anomaly of pipe network such as leak or abnormal demand.

Pressure monitoring is expected to be expanded in a water distribution system according to accelerated development of smart water network management technologies caused by appearances of affordable digital infrastructures like computing, storage and bandwidth. However, the placement of pressure sensors has been determined by engineer's technical decisions since there is no well-defined criteria for deciding a suitable location of pressure sensor. This study presents a placement method of pressure sensors based on the consideration of allowable error in calibrating water network analysis modeling. The proposed method is to find a minimum set of pressure sensors for achieving a reliable management of water transmissions main and increasing the efficiency of their real-time operation. In the case study in Y area's transmission main, the proposed method shows equally distributed pressure sensors in terms of hydraulics. It is expected that the proposed method can be used to manage transmission mains stably and construct a robust real-time network analysis system as a minimal criteria.
