The Brazilian test has been widely used to determine the indirect tensile strength of rock, concrete and other brittle materials. The basic assumption for the calculation formula of Brazilian tensile strength is that the elastic moduli of rock are the same both in tension and compression. However, the fact is that the elastic moduli in tension and compression of most rocks are different. Thus, the formula of Brazilian tensile strength under the assumption of isotropy is unreasonable. In the present study, we conducted Brazilian tests on flat disk-shaped rock specimens and attached strain gauges at the center of the disc to measure the strains of rock. A tension-compression bi-modular model is proposed to interpret the data of the Brazilian test. The relations between the principal strains, principal stresses and the ratio of the compressive modulus to tensile modulus at the disc center are established. Thus, the tensile and compressive moduli as well as the correct tensile strength can be estimated simultaneously by the new formulas. It is found that the tensile and compressive moduli obtained using these formulas were in well agreement with the values obtained from the direct tension and compression tests. The formulas deduced from the Brazilian test based on the assumption of isotropy overestimated the tensile strength and tensile modulus and underestimated the compressive modulus. This work provides a new methodology to estimate tensile strength and moduli of rock simultaneously considering tension-compression bi-modularity.

Convective instability driven by surface tension is analyzed in an initially quiescent water absorbing ammonia gas with heat transfer using the linear stability analysis. The propagation theory is adapted to find the critical conditions of the onset of Marangoni convection. In this theory, the solutal penetration depth is chosen as the length scale factor. The results show that the liquid layer becomes more stable with decreasing the Schmidt number and increasing the Lewis number. It is also found that there is a critical Biot number to make the liquid layer be most unstable, and there is a linear relationship between the thor-mal Marangoni number and the solutal Marangoni number.
Basic studies for the treatment of particulate organic substances contained in wastewater by flotation have been conducted. Four kinds of plastics were chosen as the possibly existing organic particles in wastewater and the Zisman plots for these substances were constructed by measuring the contact angle of liquids on their surfaces. The critical surface tensions for these organic substances were estimated based on the constructed Zisman plot and the floatability of organic substances were regarded to be related with their molecular structure. The existence of dissolved organic substances such as a surfactant was observed to affect the extent of flotation of particulate organics. In addition, the consideration of work of adhesion was thought to be better than adopting the critical surface tension as the analytical basis in the operational design of flotation process of organic particles.

Rheological properties of ink and Ink-Water balance are the important factors in lithographic printing. Laboratory test method which determines the emulsification rate of dampening solution and ink has been described. The emulsification theory and laboratory test method deduced from Surland and it has become a useful tool for the industry. The effects of pH value and surface tension of dampening solution on the emulsification rate has been tested by many researcher. In this paper we focused on the factors which influence in the emulsification such as pH and surface tension of dampening solution and emulsifying temperature. To study on the factors determining the emulsion velocity, we have measured water pickup and calculated emulsion velocity constant 'k' and activation energy.

This study was performed to investigate the material behavior of hybrid thermoplastic composites contained glass fiber and calcium carbonate. The composite was prepared with each combination ratio of calcium carbonate, and the content of glass fiber was fixed with 10% by weight. In order to investigate the material behavior for various combination ratio, tension test, flexural test, and impact test were performed. Microscopic observation were conducted to examine the fractured surface of specimen for tension test. And the material behavior of the hybrid thermoplastic composite immersed in salt water with definite time was investigated.
This study examines two traditional approaches (non-linear elastic and elasto-plastic) in association with 2D and 3D FEM analyses of a box-section pile embedded in sand. A particular emphasis is placed on stress singularities concerning both reentrant corners of the pile section and the resulting tension zones. From the experience gained in this study, non-linear elastic soil models are less restrictive when one considers stress singularities and their possible effects on convergence of the solution. At least for monotonic loading, when compared with field tests, non-linear elastic models yield better results than the plasticity ones. On the other hand, although elasto-plastic models are not limited to monotonic loading, they are much more sensitive to stress singularities. For this reason, a spherical elastic region is necessary at the pile tip to ensure convergence. Without this region, one must artificially impose an apparent cohesion to limit the tension stresses within a sand medium.

In this study, structural stability of large diameter high density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe during installation was numerically investigated in order to investigate the effect of concrete collar dimension, water depth and tension (pulling force). From the numerical simulation results, the total stress of HDPE pipe with designed concrete collar was within 2.5%, so the total weight of concrete collar for sinking of HDPE is important rather than concrete collar dimension. Furthermore, the tension area for possible installation is decreased as the air filling rate is increased. Therefore, it is important to calculate the reasonable tension range before actual installation for safe installation of HDPE pipe.

A numerical model analysis was performed to analyze the stability of the mooring lines of an automatic submersible fish cage system in waves and currents. The fish cage system consisted of a 12-angled rigid frame, net cage, cover net, 12 upper floats, 12 tanks(for fixed and variable ballast), mooring lines, anchors, and a control station. Simulations were performed with the cage at the surface of the water and at a depth of 20 m. A Morison equation type model was used for simulations of the system in two configurations. The force parameters described both regular and random waves, with and without currents, and their values were input to the model. Mooring tension calculations were conducted on the mooring lines, grid lines and lower bridle lines of the cage. The stability of the mooring lines was checked under both static and dynamic conditions.

This paper adresses the shaking table tests with 1/100 scaled model followed similitude law for OOdam main designing section to understand nonlinear behavior characteristics of concrete dam body by ground motion. As earthquake wave, Hachinohe and El Centre waves were used and acceleration and displacements are measured to analyze behaviors of dam body. For maximum ground acceleration range $(0.3\~0.9 g)$, the results showed linear behavior regardless of maximum 9round acceleration and secured safety of structure. To analyze the behavior of dam after tension cracking, 3 cm-notch was placed at the critical section of over-flowing section. As results of applying Hachinohe wave(0.8 g), Even though tension cracks were formed at over-flowing section by Hachinohe wave(0.8 g), it showed that the dam is stable for supporting upper stream Part of water tank of dam.
