  • The variation in the shape of water droplet moving on atomistically smooth solid surface in the presence of a constant body force is simulated using molecular dynamics simulation. We investigated how the advancing and receding contact angle of the moving water droplet changes on a solid surface having various characteristic energies. From the MD simulation results, we obtained the density profile defined as the number of water molecules at a given position. Then, assuming the water droplet periphery to be a circle, we calculated the contact angles by using a nonlinear fitting of the half-density contour line. The present simulation clearly shows the different profile of the advancing and receding contact angle for these three different interaction potential between the water droplet and the solid surface.

  • The process of evaporation from free water surface was simulated in a large scale environmental chamber under various controlled atmospheric conditions and also was modelled by a new mass transfer model. Six evaporation tests were conducted with increasing wind speed and air temperature in the environmental chamber, and hence the effect of atmosphere parameters on the evaporation process and the corresponding response of water were investigated. Furthermore, based on the experiment results, seven general types of mass transfer models were evaluated firstly, and then a new model consisted of wind speed function and air relative humidity function was proposed and validated. The results show that the free water evaporation is mainly affected by the atmospheric parameters and the evaporation rate increases with the increasing air temperature and wind speed. Both the air and soil temperatures are affected by the energy transformation during water evaporation. The new model can satisfactorily describe the evaporation process from free water surface under different atmospheric conditions.

  • Perovskite type ceramic membranes which exhibit dual ion conduction (proton and oxygen ion conduction) can permeate water and can aid solving operational problems such as temperature gradient and carbon deposition associated with a working solid oxide fuel cell. From this point of view, it is crucial to reveal water transport mechanism and especially the nature of the surface sites that is necessary for water incorporation and evolution. $BaCe_{0.8}Y_{0.2}O_{3-{\alpha}}$ (BCY20) was used as a model proton and oxygen ion conducting membrane in this work. Four different catalytically modified membrane configurations were used for the investigations and water flux was measured as a function of temperature. In addition, CO was introduced to the permeate side in order to test the stability of membrane against water and $CO/CO_2$ and post operation analysis of used membranes were carried out. The results revealed that water incorporation occurs on any exposed electrolyte surface. However, the magnitude of water permeation changes depending on which membrane surface is catalytically modified. The platinum increases the water flux on the feed side whilst it decreases the flux on the permeate side. Water flux measurements suggest that platinum can block water permeation on the permeate side by reducing the access to the lattice oxygen in the surface layer.

  • Assuming that summer surface waters in the South Sea (northern East China Sea) are formed mostly by a mixing of three source water (Changjiang Discharge Water; Kuroshio Water and Yellow Sea Surface Water) we apply optimum multiparameter (OMP) analysis to calculate the mixing ratio of each source water to a given surface water. Since OMP requires more parameters than the number of water types (three in this study), we utilize two radium isotopes of dissolved $^{226}Ra\;and\;^{228}Ra$ along with temperature and salinity. Parameter values of each source water are deduced from in situ and historical data. Results with three source of waters on the surface waters are quite promising with less than $1\%$ of unanswered portions. Results not only reproduce the measured temperature and salinity faithfully but also discern the water masses of similar T and S according to their source water mixing. Extending OMP analysis to a whole water column obviously requires more parameters because more source waters are involved in the water mass formation. Original OMP routine utilized dissolved oxygen and nutrients. However, they seem to be perturbed too much by biological activities in the case of shallow waters. We discussed the use of other potential parameters. Also the benefit of parameter substitution is briefly introduced for the future OMP application on shallow waters.

  • To establish the method for investigating the behavior of aerosol particles deposited on the leaf surface against fog water under natural conditions, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX) analysis and wash water analysis by ion chromatography after the washing treatment were performed using leaves of white birch collected from low part of the tree crown and the top of the tree in Sapporo City, Hokkaido, northern Japan. Each of collected leaves was divided into two parts according to the treatment performed: leaf surface (adaxial side) was 1) untreated, and 2) washed with deionized water with a pipette. In untreated samples, many particles of various shapes, including soil particles and organic debris, were deposited on the surface. Particles containing S were found on the surface of samples collected from only low part of the tree crown. After the washing treatment, SEM-EDX analysis revealed that soil particles and particles containing S had been washed off with water, although some particles such as soil particles and organic debris still remained on the leaf surface. The major anion such as $SO{_4}^{2-}$ was detected in wash water of all samples, although the peak of S in X-ray spectra was not detected from samples collected at top of the tree. The combination of SEM-EDX analysis with wash water analysis indicated that $SO{_4}^{2-}$ was deposited on the leaf surface in dissolved state and/or in state of submicron particles. These results suggested that fog water could remove soil particles and particles containing S and $SO{_4}^{2-}$ from the leaf surfaces, but not all particles. There was no difference in sampling position in the tree crown. Our study suggested that combination with SEM-EDX analysis and wash water analysis would be effective for investigation of the behavior of particles on the leaf surface against fog water.

  • Effective use of water resources has become a social problem because the deficit of water comes from population growth and Industrial development. Therefore, the conjunctive operation of surface water and groundwater will become an alternative. Groundwater has many advantages for the evaporation and effect of rainfall compared with surface water. Although the available amount of groundwater is small, groundwater dam can be used complementarily because of the sustainable supply of water. A calculating technique of the optimal amount of water resources by the groundwater dam was developed. A pilot site was selected to assess the optial amount of groungwater for the designed groungwater dam. If the developed technique is more refined by the measured data, the groundwater dam will become a good alternative to develope the water resources in the water deficit area.

  • In the manufacturing process of ready-mixed concrete, quantity management directly affects the workability and strength of concrete. Therefore, water quantity is the most important management factor for water quality control of ready-mixed concrete. It can be said that the number of unit water in the mix design, the water quantity due to the surface water contained in the aggregate used, and the water quantity taking into account the concentration of sludge contained in the recycling water when using the recycling water are factors that affect the quantity management of ready-mixed concrete. In this study, as a stable quality control method of ready-mixed concrete, a quantity management method by aggregate surface water and a sludge concentration management method according to the use of recycling water were proposed. Thus, we tried to suggest an efficient quantity management method for stabilizing the quality of ready-mixed concrete.

  • Applied decanol and nonanol provided more weight loss than applied heptanol and octanol. PET using decanol showed the highest weight loss than other alcohols applied. Sodium hydroxide caused weight loss in PET fabrics because terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol were separated by the hydrolysis of the ester group in the PET chains. The terephthalic acid was neutralized to disodium terephthalate and the reaction results in weight loss in the PET fabrics. The weight loss increased with increasing hydrolysis time because disodium terepthalate was water soluble and the reaction was not reached at equilibrium. Pretreatment alcohols increased water absorption, especially in case of PET applied decanol revealed the highest water absorption. PET applied decanol showed 400% of initial water absorption, and PET applied nonanol revealed 250% of initial water absorption. However, the pristine PET showed 90% initial water absorption, and it revealed 230% maximum water absorption as compared to other alcohols. Also, PET applied decanol, nonanol, octanol and heptanol showed 600%, 400%, 350% and 300% maximum water absorption, respectively. The result implied alcohol length affected on water absorption of PET fibrous assembly. This implies that the microvoid of the PET surface hold water molecules. Surface morphology of PET appears that the pretreatment reagent attacks almost entire surface of the fiber, causing surface etching. As the surface etching progresses, it propagates inside the fiber, resulting in the formation of elongated cavities on the surface.

  • For the purpose of developing liner board for water resistant corrugated board in the cold chain system, several types of base paper for corrugated board were purchased from the market and 6 different boards were produced in the mill by applying the chemicals, chosen in the previous studies, on the base paper. Then water-moisture resistance and physical properties of the boards were compared each other. The liner board which is dried at high temperature with pressure by Condebelt (CK paper) showed a superior performance in strength over common liner boards. Strength of the board increased by surface chemical treatment up to $60\%$ of compressive strength and $30\%$ of burst strength. Starch insolubilization with Ammonium Zirconium Carbonate and surface coating with a surface sizing agent and a moisture resistant chemical on CK paper showed the best result. Therefore this method was recommended to produce the outer liner board for water resistant corrugated board.

  • Surface water-groundwater interaction (SWGI) is an important hydrological process that influences both the quantity and quality of water resources. However, regional scale SWGI model calibration and uncertainty analysis have been a challenge because integrated models inherently carry a vast number of parameters, modeling assumptions, and inputs, potentially leaving little time and budget to explore questions related to model performance and forecasting. In this study, we have proposed the application of iterative ensemble smoother (IES) for uncertainty analysis and calibration of the widely used integrated surface-subsurface model, SWAT-MODFLOW. SWAT-MODFLOW integrates Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) and a three-dimensional finite difference model (MODFLOW). The model was calibrated using a parameter estimation tool (PEST). The major advantage of the employed IES is that the number of model runs required for the calibration of an ensemble is independent of the number of adjustable parameters. The pilot point approach was followed to calibrate the aquifer parameters, namely hydraulic conductivity, specific storage, and specific yield. The parameter estimation process for the SWAT model focused primarily on surface-related parameters. The uncertainties both in the streamflow and groundwater level were assessed. The work presented provides valuable insights for future endeavors in coupled surface-subsurface modeling, data collection, model development, and informed decision-making.
