The purpose of this paper is to find dangerous factors of a water purifier when water leaks due to inappropriate use and analyze the patterns of damaged parts in order to provide data for the examination of the cause of the problem. If the water purifier is inspected and managed by a non-specialist, when the FLC(Float Level Controller) at the top is inclined, water leakage may occur to the water purifier. The leaked water flows onto the cables and hoses and enters the thermostat terminal, heater, PCB, power supply connection connector, etc., becoming a dangerous factor that may cause a system failure, fire, etc. Due to the water that entered the input terminal, low noise and white smoke were generated at first. However, the flame gradually propagated due to the continuous inflow of moisture. It was found that when moisture reached the PCB, a carbonized conductive path was formed at the varistor terminal, input terminal, semiconductor device terminal, etc., and the flame became larger, which might result in a fire. From the metal microscope analysis of a damaged condenser terminal, it was found that the amorphous structure unique to copper cable disappeared, and voids, boundary surface and disorderly fine particles occurred. Also, in the case of the connector into which moisture penetrated, fusion and deformation occurred at the cable connection clips. The result of analysis of the power supply cable connector using a thermal image camera showed that most of the heat was generated from the cable connection clips and the temperature at the connection center was normal.
In this paper, we present the results of experimental and analytical investigations on the structural behavior of GFRP pipes used in the water supply pipeline system. Cross-section of the pipe is consisted with two GFRP tubes and polymer mortar between the tubes. Due to the advantages such as light-weight, corrosion resistance, smooth surface, flexibility, etc., use of GFRP pipe in the water supply pipeline system is ever increasing trend. Therefore, more optimized structural design methodology should be developed. In the investigation, we conducted theoretical and analytical studies on the load versus radial deformation characteristics of GFRP pipes. In addition, ring stiffness test is also performed. Test results are compared with theoretical and analytical results and it was found that the results are agreed well within 5% of radial deformation. Finally, it was also found that the GFRP pipes used in the water supply pipeline system are strong enough to satisfy the industrial requirements.
A new method for injecting cooling water into the Korean research reactor (KRR) in the event of beam tube rupture is proposed in this paper. Moreover, the research evaluates the risk to the reactor core in terms of core damage frequency (CDF). The proposed method maintains the cooling water in the chimney at a certain level in the tank to prevent nuclear fuel damage solely by gravitational coolant feeding from the emergency water supply system (EWSS). This technique does not require sump recirculation operations described in the current procedure for resolving beam tube accidents. The reduction in the risk to the core in the event of beam tube rupture that can be achieved by the proposed change in the cooling water injection design is quantified as follows. 1) The total CDF of the KRR for the proposed design change is approximately 4.17E-06/yr, which is 8.4% lower than the CDF of the current design (4.55E-06/yr). 2) The CDF for beam tube rupture is 7.10E-08/yr, which represents an 84.1% decrease compared with that of the current design (4.49E-07/yr). In addition to this quantitative reduction in risk, the modified cooling water injection design maintains a supply of pure coolant to the EWSS tank. This means that the reactor does not require decontamination after an accident. Thermal hydraulic analysis proves that the water level in the reactor pool does not cause damage to the nuclear fuel cladding after beam tube rupture. This is because the amount of water in the chimney can be regulated by the EWSS function. The EWSS supplies emergency water to the reactor core to compensate for the evaporation of coolant in the core, thus allowing water to cover the fuel assemblies in the reactor core over a sufficient amount of time.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to understand and compare the knowledge of the adolescents and adults among the residents of Seoul metropolitan city about water fluoridation program. Methods : A total of 613 adolescents and adults between the age of 15 and 31-49 was surveyed by the questionnaire. About 82.6% of adolescents, comparing to the 92.1% of adults, were surveyed to vote for the fluoridation program, and only 6.8% of adolescents, comparing to the 28.6% of adults, were surveyed to be aware of health safety of water fluoridation program. Conclusions : Extensive oral health education program to the adolescents are necessary about using water fluoridation to prevent the dental caries.
In case of the application of Hazen-Williams C for design, operation or maintenance of water supply system, field situations always should be reflected on the factors. In this study, the relationships between C factors and influencing factors are analyzed using statistical techniques with 174 measured C factor data collected in periodic inspection for safety diagnosis in multi-regional water supply systems. To analyze their relationships, cross analysis, one-way ANOVA, correlation analysis were conducted. Analysis results showed that C factors had high correlations with both of elapsed year and pipe diameter and were relatively highly affected by coating material among influencing factors with the categorical type. On the other hand, elapsed year, pipe diameter and water type were meaningful influencing factors according to the results of multiple regression analysis. The Cluster analysis revealed that C factors had a tendency of being fundamentally classified on the basis of the elapsed year of about 20 years and the pipe diameter of 1500mm. Although C factors were generally greatly affected by elapsed year, size of pipe diameter relatively had an large influence on values of them in case of large diameter pipes. Lastly, It can be suggested that C factor estimation formulas using multiple regression analysis and clustering analysis in this study, can be applied as decision standards of C factor in multi-regional water supply systems.
One of the most important purpose of multi-purpose reservoir is storing a large amount of water for utilization in a dry season. However, multi-purpose reservoirs that were constructed according to the limited hydrologic information available at the time of construction may encounter problems such as decreased water inflow due to climate change and an inability to cope with a water shortage. To solve these problems, in 2015, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport suggested a revised water supply standard in case of water shortage for reservoirs. However, the revised standard has not been sufficiently discussed to determine its effectiveness. In addition, multi-purpose reservoirs in South Korea have secured and stored water for emergencies, but there is currently no way to utilize the stored water. Determining how to utilize the stored water effectively may be a useful method for preparing drought. Therefore, this article discusses the revised water supply standard as it relates to a water shortage in reservoirs and a method of utilizing the water stored for emergencies in multi-purpose reservoirs. The options for utilizing the water storage were evaluated using a water shortage safety degree index, and the results showed that the options may slightly and limitedly increase the water supply capacity. However, the evaluation also showed that a complex application of two options may overcome the exisiting problem and to supply water more effectively.
Among the firefighting facilities, the fire department connection during firefighting is more important than any other facilities at the firefighting site to supply fire water. This study examined the water supply port of a fire department connection installed at an apartment building based on the Standard for Fire Safety (NFSC 502). The time of discovery was measured by fire fighters who knew or did not know of the water supply port installed in the apartment building, and by separating day and night. To maximize the use of the fire department connection which is the full fire extinguisher facility used by the fire brigade based on the results of the experiment, the author suggests improvement proposals that can clarify the installation location and install the location sign of the fire department connection for the Standard for Fire Safety (NFSC 502).
In this study, an evaluation system that can be used to evaluate the feasibility of developing and supplying hydrothermal energy for the operation of large-scale complex facilities was developed. To this end, this study derived factors to be considered when selecting a location for the use of hydrothermal energy using raw water from multi-purpose dams and regional water supply systems through literature survey and expert interviews. The evaluation indicators derived from this study are divided into four sectors: hydrothermal energy utilization factors, location factors, planning factors, and disaster safety factors, and are composed of 10 mid-level indicators and 34 detailed planning indicators. The relative importance of all factors was derived using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) technique, and the developed evaluation indicators and relative importance were applied to four multi-purpose dam regions in the country. As a result, it was found that in the development and use of hydrothermal energy utilizing regional raw water supply line the urban planning conditions of the supply site can have a greater impact on the location selection results than the hydrothermal energy development itself. Due to the characteristics of the evaluation indicators developed in this study and their nature as comprehensive indicators, it is believed that the results should be applied to determine the overall adequacy of site selection in the early stages of hydrothermal energy development. In the future, it is believed that it will be necessary to analyze the problems in supplying and operating hydrothermal energy using raw water from multi-purpose dams and regional water resources. Based on the analysis the evaluation system developed in this study is expected to be improved and supplemented.
Following the Fukushima accident, a special safety inspection was conducted in Korea. The inspection results show that Korean nuclear power plants have no imminent risk for expected maximum potential earthquake or coastal flooding. However long- and short-term safety improvements do need to be implemented. One of the measures to increase the mitigation capability during a prolonged station blackout (SBO) accident is installing injection flow paths to provide emergency cooling water of external sources using fire engines to the steam generators or reactor cooling systems. This paper illustrates an evaluation of the effectiveness of external cooling water injection strategies using fire trucks during a potential extended SBO accident in a 1,000 MWe pressurized water reactor. With regard to the effectiveness of external cooling water injection strategies using fire engines, the strategies are judged to be very feasible for a long-term SBO, but are not likely to be effective for a short-term SBO.
For a basin with existing reservoirs, the necessity of additional water demands has been proposed, as well as a reevaluation of existing reservoir yield has been proposed. The objective of this study is to reevaluate a multipurpose reservoir yield and to assess the possibility of additional water supply according to increase of downstream water demands. Andong and Imha Reservoirs are selected for reevaluation. The standard reservoir operation rule model and the HEC-ResSim model were used for reservoir simulation for 30 years (1979~2008). In this study, water supply reliability was set up as 96.7% and 95.0% with yearly and monthly evaluating unit. In case of 95% water supply reliability with yearly evaluating unit, water supply capability of Andong reservoir was evaluated as 893MCM and water supply capability of Imha reservoir was evaluated as 382MCM, and that results showed that water yields for both reservoirs are less than the original designed yields.
