  • Decision making by farmers regarding irrigation is critical for crop production. Therefore, the precision irrigation technique is very important to improve crop quality and yield. Recently, much attention has been given to remote sensing of crop canopy temperature as a crop water-stress indicator, because it is a scientifically based and easily applicable method even at field scales. This study monitored a series of time-variant canopy temperature of cucumber under three different irrigation treatments: under-irrigation (control), optimal-irrigation, and over-irrigation. The difference between canopy temperature ($T_c$) and air temperature ($T_a$), $T_c-T_a$, was calculated as an indicator of cucumber water stress. Vapor pressure deficit (VPD) was evaluated to define water stress on the basis of the temperature difference between leaf and air. The values of $T_c-T_a$ was negatively related to VPD; further, cucumber growth in the under- and over-irrigated fields showed water stress, in contrast to that grown in the optimally irrigated field. Thus, thermal infrared measurements could be useful for evaluating crop water status and play an important role in irrigation scheduling of agricultural crops.

  • In Korea, there is a growing competitive for water resources between industrial, domestic and agricultural consumer, and the environment as many other OECD countries. The demand on water use is also affecting aquatic ecosystems particularly where withdrawals are in excess of minimum environmental needs for rivers, lakes and wetland habits. OECD developed three indicators related to water use by the agriculture in above contexts : the first is a water use intensity indicator, which is expressed as the quantity or share of agricultural water use in total national water utilization; the second is a water stress indicator, which is expressed as the proportion of rivers (in length) subject to diversion or regulation for irrigation without reserving a minimum of limiting reference flow; and the third is a water use efficiency indicator designated as the technical and the economic efficiency. These indicators have different meanings in the aspect of water resource conservation and sustainable water use. So, it will be more significant that the indicators should reflect the intrinsic meanings of them. The problem is that the aspect of an overall water flow in the agro-ecosystem and recycling of water use not considered in the assessment of agricultural water use needed for calculation of these water use indicators. Namely, regional or meteorological characteristics and site-specific farming practices were not considered in the calculation of these indicators. In this paper, we tried to calculate water use indicators suggested in OECD and to modify some other indicators considering our situation because water use pattern and water cycling in Korea where paddy rice farming is dominant in the monsoon region are quite different from those of semi-arid regions. In the calculation of water use intensity, we excluded the amount of water restored through the ground from the total agricultural water use because a large amount of water supplied to the farm was discharged into the stream or the ground water. The resultant water use intensity was 22.9% in 2001. As for water stress indicator, Korea has not defined nor monitored reference levels of minimum flow rate for rivers subject to diversion of water for irrigation. So, we calculated the water stress indicator in a different way from OECD method. The water stress indicator was calculated using data on the degree of water storage in agricultural water reservoirs because 87% of water for irrigation was taken from the agricultural water reservoirs. Water use technical efficiency was calculated as the reverse of the ratio of irrigation water to a standard water requirement of the paddy rice. The efficiency in 2001 was better than in 1990 and 1998. As for the economic efficiency for water use, we think that there are a lot of things to be taken into considerations to make a useful indicator to reflect socio-economic values of agricultural products resulted from the water use. Conclusively, site-specific, regional or meteorogical characteristics as in Korea were not considered in the calculation of water use indicators by methods suggested in OECD(Volume 3, 2001). So, it is needed to develop a new indicators for the indicators to be more widely applicable in the world.

  • Higher thermal exposure can influence the blood cell morphology and count. Hence, based on the previous results (Rahman et al., 2019), the present study evaluated the morphometric indices of erythrocytes and their nucleus under different water temperatures (25℃, 28℃, 31℃, and 34℃) to investigate their use as an indicator of thermal stress in red spotted grouper, Epinephelus akaara. 180 healthy specimens of E. akaara were exposed to four temperature conditions (25℃ as control, 28℃, 31℃, and 34℃) for 42 days, following 2 weeks of acclimation at 25℃. Erythrocyte major axis (EL), erythrocyte minor axis (EW), nucleus major axis (NL), and nucleus minor axis (NW) were examined from the blood smears on each sampling day (i.e., 2, 7, and 42 days of thermal exposure). EL and NL were significantly decreased, whereas EW and NW were increased at higher water temperature (31℃ and 34℃). The major-minor axis proportions of erythrocytes and their nucleus (EL/EW; NL/NW) were decreased with increasing water temperature (31℃ and 34℃). The strong relationships were observed among the morphometric indices of erythrocytes and their nucleus, especially in EL vs. NL and EW vs. NW. This study reveals that elevated water temperature (31℃ and 34℃) can influence the major and minor axis morphometry of erythrocytes and their nucleus in red spotted grouper. These indices may be used as stress indicators to monitor the health status of E. akaara and probably for other fish species.

  • The purpose of this study is to develope a indicator for agricultural water use. Agricultural water is challenged by the increase of water use in the sectors of urbanization and industry and social pressure to use water in sustainable and environmentally sound way. The development of agricultural environment indicators is divided into 13 sectors, among which agricultural water use indicators include amount and intensity of agricultural water use, efficiency of agricultural water use, shortage or surplus of water use, water stress, etc.. Agricultural water use indicators provide basic data for sustainable and environmentally sound agricultural development, and also help policy decision makers to solve water shortage problems through water policy and water management measures by making the most of the total available water resources.

  • Water potential which is an physical chemistry and thermodynamic indicator expressed water status of plant root, stem and fruit could be use as a useful indicator for growth control of hydroponically grown muskmelon plant. Linear relationship was observed between EC and water potential of nutrient solution, consequently increment of EC related to the decreasing water potential and resulted with the alteration of water potential and solute potential of upper leaves. Rapid reduction in growth was observed in over 5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of Cu concentration in the media and same tendency was recorded in the shoot fresh weight, root dry weight and chlorophyll content. Increment of Cu concentration in the nutrient solution leads to lower the growth rate and then the water potential of upper leaves. Turgor pressure was not affected the growth of hydroponically grown muskmelon and also Cu concentration of nutrient solution was not recognized the direct relationship to the growth characteristics of muskmelon. These results demonstrated that water potential of nutrient solution can be use as an useful indicator for water physiological comparison of plant growth in hydroponically grown muskmelon.

  • To study the stress response of coho salmon (Oncorhpohus kisutch) during transportation, the stress responses of the fish confined in a container box filled with freshwater or $5{\%{\circ}}$ salt-water were monitored pre and post 10 hours transportation. Changes of cortisol as the first stress indicator, and glucose (GLC), lactate (LAC), triglyceride (TG), cholesterol (CHOL), sodium ($Na^+$), chloride ($Cl^-$), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) as the second stress indicators were compared between the fish in two hauling media. Results showed significantly lower levels of cortisol, GLC, LAC, TG, CHOL and AST in salt-water group than freshwater group, It was shown that using salt-water for transportation could lessen the stress level of the coho salmon.

  • The relationship between relative water contents of lettuce leaves and biochemical activities in lettuce was examined in this study to explore an adaptation response of lettuce to water stress from soils. Soil water contents and relative water contents of leaves were positively related to show $R^2$=0.8728. Hydrogen peroxide contents of leaves rapidly increased with reduction of soil water content, whereas soluble protein contents and dry matters rapidly decreased. And chlorophyll a and b contents of leaves decreased with increase in carotenoid content. Furthermore, the activities of ascorbate peroxidase (APX), monodehydroascorbate reductase (MDHAR), and dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR) increased dramatically, and mRNA transcript levels of APX, MDHAR and DHAR also increased. Relationship of relative water content of lettuce leaves to hydrogen peroxide, to ascorbate peroxidase activity, to dehydroascorbate reductase activity, and to monodehydroascorbate reductase activity was shown to be positively correlated. It is highly plausible from this study that these enzyme activities could be developed as an indicator of water states in soils.

  • Plant water deficiency during drought season causes physiological stress and can be a critical indicator of forest fire vulnerability. In this study, we attempt to analyze the spectral characteristics of water stressed vegetation by using the laboratory measurement on leaf samples and the canopy reflectance spectra extracted from satellite hyperspectral image data. Leaf-level reflectance spectra were measured by varying moisture content using a portable spectro-radiometer. Canopy reflectance spectra of sample forest stands of two primary species (pine and oak) located in central part of the Korean peninsula were extracted from EO-l Hyperion imaging spectrometer data obtained during the drought season in 2001 and the normal precipitation year in 2002. The preliminary analysis on the reflectance spectra shows that the spectral characteristics of leaf samples are not compatible with the ones obtained from canopy level. Although moisture content of vegetation can be influential to the radiant flux reflected from leaf-level, it may not be very straightforward to obtain the spectral characteristics that are directly related to the level of canopy moisture content. Canopy spectra form forest stands can be varied by structural variables (such as LAt, percent coverage, and biomass) other than canopy moisture content.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the responses of red pepper (Hongjinju) leaves under water stress. Hyperspectral short wave infrared (SWIR, 1000~1800 nm) reflectance imaging techniques were used to acquire the spectral images for the red pepper leaves with and without water stress. The acquired spectral data were analyzed with a multivariate analysis method of ANOVA (analysis of variance). The ANOVA model suggested that 1449 nm wavebands was the most effective to determine the stress responses of the red pepper leaves exposed to the water deficiency. The waveband of 1449 nm was closely related to the water absorption band. The processed spectral image of 1449 nm could separate the non-stress, moderate stress (-20 kPa), and severe stress (-50 kPa) groups of red pepper leaves distinctively. Results demonstrated that hyperspectral imaging technique can be applied to monitoring the stress responses of red pepper leaves which are an indicator of physiological and biochemical changes under water deficiency.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of alcohol and stress on liver and buccal mucosa in guinea pig by immunological methods. Especially, Cytochrome P450 (CYP) which in oxidase during alcohol metabolism and bioactivator to carcinogen was used as an indicator in this study. 48 guinea pigs were used in this study. The experimental guinea pig were divided into three groups: The first was a group with giving alcohol-15%(v/v) ethyl alcohol, the second group was a with giving stress in the $0^{\circ}C$ water and the third was a control group. Every 4 guinea pigs of each group were sacrificed weekly-first, second, third, fourth week after experiment and extracted liver tissues and buccal mucosa. The liver tissues were observed by using immunoblotting technique (Western blot) and buccal mucosa were observed by immunofluorescence technique. The results were as follows: 1. By the alcohol and stress, Cytochrome P450 was amplified positive in the liver tissues at third week. 2. By the alcohol and stress, Cytochrome P450 was not detected in the buccal mucosa at any period.
