  • Soil aggregates, resulting from physico-chemical and biological interactions, are important to understand carbon dynamics and material transport in soils. The objective of this study is to investigate stable macro-aggregate (> 0.25mm diameter) in wet sieving (SM) and their relation to soil properties in 15 sites. The clay contents of soils were ranged from 1% to 33%, and their land uses included bare and cultivated lands of annual upland crops, orchard, and grass. Undisturbed 3 inch cores with five replicates were sampled at topsoil (i.e., 0- to 10-cm depth), for analyzing SM and physico-chemical properties, after in situ measurement of air permeability. SM of sandy soils, with clay content less than 2%, was observed as 0%. Except the sandy soils, SM of soils mainly depended on land uses, showing 27%~35% in soils with annual plants such as vegetable and corn, 51% in orchard, and 75% in grass. This sequence of SM is probably due to the different strength of soil disturbance like tillage with different land uses. SM had significant correlation with cation exchange capacity, organic matter content, sand, clay, silt, bulk density, and exchangeable potassium (K) and magnesium (Mg), whereas fluctuating properties with fertilization such as pH, EC, and water soluble phosphorus weren't significantly correlated to the SM. Particularly, exchangeable calcium (Ca) had significant relation with SM, only except soils with oversaturating Ca. This study, therefore, suggested that SM could perceive different land uses and the change of soil properties in soils, necessarily considering soil textures and Ca over-saturation.

  • Recently, the river sands are in short supply. Gathering sea-sand will be faced with difficulty. Alternative aggregates for concrete are estimated by many researchers. The aggregates are blast furnace slag, steel slag, copper slag, ferro-nickel slag and recycled aggregate and etc. Nevertheless steel slag has been limited in practical use due to its expansibility which is occurred reaction with water and free CaO in slag. Most recently stable management method is to minimize the expansibility researched and developed. First of all, slump, air content, compressive strength and flexural strength are measured in concrete. An estimate is made of the segregation of concrete containing atomized steel slag by Image Analyser program.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of some soil conditioners, such as polyvinylalcohol(PVA), zeolite and perlite, on the changes of soil physical properties and on tobacco growth in paddy-upland rotated field. Soil conditioners were treated at the rates of 120kg in PVA, 500kg in zeolite and perlite per l0a, respectively. Ratio of soil aggregates formed from the treated plots tended to. be higher than those from the control in the order of PVA > perlite > zeolite. The wet aggregate stability, mean weight diameter, moisture retention and air permeability from the treated plots tended to be higher than those from the control. Amounts of water-stable aggregates of PV A-treated soil increased with higher soil moisture showing a peak at 50% of moisture content. But with respect to particle of size aggregate formed for crop growth and workability in field, it was presumed that 40% of soil moisture content would be most desirable. Visual characters of soil surface throughout the experiment clearly showed that treated soils were maintaining better surface roughness and porosity than control, but difference in water stable aggregates among treated plots tended to be narrowed. The growths of tobacco, espacially its root zone were better in conditioner treated plots than in non-treated plot showing best in PVA-treated soil.

  • The aim of the research is, for normal strength range concrete mixture, to evaluate the fluidity development and robustness of the mixture depending on various water reducers. Although a usage of water reducer has been essential to make a concrete under the current conditions of worsen aggregate quality, selection of appropriate performance of water reducer is significant. Hence, in this research, regarding the normal strength range mortar, three different performance of water reducers were evaluated in aspects of securing fluidity, and robustness, rheological behaviors. Additionally, for the concrete mixture, the fluidity change was evaluated depending on unit water content for each different water reducer, and the water reducing performance with manufacturing cost was compared and analyzed. By the result of this research, it is expected to provide a case of determining appropriate kind of water reducer and to contribute on conditions of securing sufficient fluidity with stable quality and economical advantage.

  • This study is aimed to derive the optimum mix proportion of the combined self compacting concrete according to cement types (blast-furnace slag cement and belite cement) and to propose the basic data to field construction work after evaluating the quality properties. Specially, lime stone powder (LSP) as binder and viscosity agent are used in the combined self compacting concrete because slurry wall of an underground LNG storage tank should be kept stability of quality during concrete working. Replacement ratio of LSP is determined by confined water ratio test and main design factors including fine aggregate ratio ($S_r$), coarse aggregate ratio ($G_v$) and water-cement ratio (W/C) are selected. Also, quality properties including setting time, bleeding content, shortening depth and hydration heat on the optimum mix proportion of the combined self compacting concrete according to cement type are compared and analyzed. As test results, the optimum mix proportion of the combined self compacting concrete according to cement type is as followings. 1) Slag cement type-replacement ratio of LSP 13.5%, $S_r$ 47% and W/C 41%. 2) Belite cement type-replacement ratio of LSP 42.7%, Sr 43% and W/C 51%. But optimum coarse aggregate ratio is 53% regardless of cement types. Also, as test results regarding setting time, bleeding content, shortening depth and hydration heat of the combined self compacting concrete by cement type, belite cement type is most stable in the quality properties and is to apply the actual construction work.

  • An amphiphilic cationic branched methoxy poly (ethylene glycol)-branched polyethylenimine - poly(L-phenylalanine) (mPEG-bPEI-pPhe) block copolymer was successfully synthesized by ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of N-carboxyanhydride of L-phenylalanine (Phe-NCA) with mPEG-bPEI for the preparation of more stable polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) included a hydrophobic interaction. mPEG-bPEI was firstly prepared by the coupling of mPEG and bPEI using hexamethylene diisocyanate (HMDI). The structural properties of mPEG-bPEI-pPhe copolymers were confirmed by $^1H$ NMR. The copolymers exhibited a self-assemble behavior in water above critical aggregate concentration (CAC) in the range of 0.01-0.14 g/L. The CAC of copolymers obviously depended on the hydrophobic block content in the copolymers (the value decreased with the increase of the pPhe block content). The cationic copolymers have the ability to form multi-interaction complex (MIC) with bovine serum albumin (BSA) and plasmid DNA through multi-interaction (electrostatic and hydrophobic interaction). The physicochemical characterization of the complex was carried out by the measurement of zeta potential and particle size. Their zeta-potentials were positive (approximately +10 mV) and their sizes decreased with increasing pPhe contents in the copolymers (PPF/BSA wt% ratio = 2). The complex showed good stability at high ionic strength. Therefore, mPEG-bPEI-pPhe block copolymer was considered as a potential material to enhance the stability of complex including biotherapuetic drugs.

  • The results of COLE(Coefficient of Linear Extensibility) measurement on various paddy soils in Korea are summarized as follows; 1. The COLE values of paddy soil in Korea varied from 0.024 to 0.094 in the surface soil while in the sub-surface soils those were ranging from 0.022 to 0.115. The poorer the relative drainage and the finer the texture caused, the greater the COLE values. 2. The matured clayey soils on fluvio-marine plains and local alluvium derived from the Tertiary materials have COLE values more than 0.09 which is demonstrated that the necessity of COLE measurement throughout profiles so that could be considered the characteristic in the characteristic of those soils. 3. The clay content has the highest positive correlation (r=0.81~0.76) values. The content of organic matter, water content at 1/3 bar, Atterberg limits, water stable aggregate etc. also have significant positive correlation with COLE values while the context of sand and silt show negative correlation. 4. Although the COLE values measured on horizontal linear bases were slightly greater than those measured on volume bases practicability was for granted. For more accurate measurement of COLE, it is reasonable to have the average values of COLE calculated from the horizontal and vertical bases.

  • To clarify the soil characteristics and genesis of the clayey terrace soils distributed in Yeongcheon (inland region) and Yeongil (coastal region), 9 typifying pedons including a recent local deposits were studied. The physico-chemical properties found were summarized as follows; 1. The contents of available water of the terrace soils were ranged from 12.0 to 20.3%. They were increased with increaseing clay content up to 35%, and then decreased at clay content of 35 to 55%, but were maintained about 12 to 13% when the clay content exceeds 55%. 2. The amount of water stable aggregates in the surface soils were ranged from 55.0 to 81.1%, and were low in cultivated upland where water erosion were accelerated while high in the paddy where the double cropping were practiced. The index of aggregate in cultivated upland were higher in the surface soils but the paddy soils were higher in subsoils. 3. The colloidal reactions checked by the differences between pH in $0.01N-Na_2SO_4$ and $H_2O$ indicate exchangeable acidity to exchangeable neutrality, which means a sort of Red-yellow soil forming process had been prevailed during genesis of the terrace soils. 4. Cation exchange capacity of the clayey terrace soils were averaged about 15.8-20.2me/100g of fine earth and 35.6-52.6me/100g of clay. The rates of base saturation were 32.7 to 57.6% and the rates decreased with increasing the elevations of terraces. 5. The activities of free iron oxides were 0.061 to 0.739 and the values decreased with increasing elevation while the crystallinity index of iron oxides positively correlated with elevations the values ranged from 0.067 to 0.537.

  • To find out problems and changing soil properties induced by leveling of paddy, a field survey was carried out with questionares to farmers of 68 project areas (990 farmers). The soil characteristics between natural soils and cut out sites was compared with soil samples taken from 37 project areas. More than 70 percents of farmers answered to the questionares expressed satisfaction on the paddy land leveling project; however, some farmers replied dissatisfaction that the arable land was decreased the soil productivity due to loss of surface soil or insufficient surface leveling, that the government support was insufficient and that transplanting of rice might be delayed due to retardation of the project. 1. The rate of cut out soils during the land leveling on plain terrain was about 15.3%, but the rates on gently sloped terrain (2-7% slopes) and sloped terrain (7-15% slopes) were relatively high showing 25.9% and 45%, respectively. 2. The deterioration of physical properties was clear in cut out site where the hardness and bulk density increased and the porosity and the rate of water stable aggregate decreased. 3. The degree of deterioration of physical properties on the Diluvial terrace was more severe than on plains or sloped alluvial fans and valleys. The decrease of available phosphorous and the content of organic matter in the cut out place due to land leveling were prominent. 4. The rice yield from cut site was decreased by 28% comparing with that from natural soils.
