Long-term trends and distribution patterns of water quality were investigated in the Asan coastal areas of Yellow Sea, Korea from 1975 to 2005. Water samples were collected at 3 stations and physicochemical parameters were analyzed including water temperature, salinity, suspended solids(SS), chemical oxygen demand(COD), dissolved oxygen(DO) and nutrients. Spatial distribution patterns were not clear among stations but the seasonal variations were distinct except COD, SS and nitrate. The trend analysis by principal component analysis(PCA) during twenty years revealed the significant variations in water quality in the study area, Annual water qualities were clearly discriminated into 4 clusters by PCA; year cluster 1988-1991, 1994-1997, and 1992-1993/1998-2005. By this multi-variate analysis we can summarize the annual trends as the followings; salinity, suspended solids and dissolved oxygen tended to increase from late 1980's, increased pH and COD from 1992, and decreased salinity and increased nitrogen and COD from 1990 due to the runoff frow agricultural lands causing eutrophication.
It is necessary to quantitatively asses the influence of tidal currents to analysis the coastal current patterns before or after constructing offshore structures like as breakwaters. This assesment can be made through the use of simulation models designed to reproduce the water movements of the area. And it is very important to predict a phenomenon of pollutant dispersion in the area. In this study, in order to predict the changes of sea water quality for the port development plan, Ilgwang harbour, located at the east coast of Pusan, the numerical computations were carried out. The flow patterns were investigated before and after the development of the harbour bay and coastal area connected on it. The computational models are an extension of earlier work on the flow which used the ADI Method (Alternating Direction Implicit Method) in appling to Osaka Bay by KANEKO et al. The transport of pollutant constituents depends upon the currental characteristics of the water-transporting medium. In the currental flow model, water velocities and water levels are computed throughout the regions of it. These value are then used in the mass-balance equation to obtain the pollutant-constituent transport. As a result of this research, the present water quality of Ilgwang harbour and the coastal areas connected on it was proved out some good condition. The changes of sea water quality due to the port development plan of the Ilgwang habour bay and the coastal area were not large compared with the present condition, but it will be likely able to get worse by increasing the semi-enclosed areas in the harbour bay. In order to improve the water quality of the area after development, the method to activate tidal exchange in the area can be needed, as a mitigation technique.

It is necessary to analysis the data characteristics of discharge and water quality for efficient water resources management, aggressive alternatives to inundation by flood and various water pollution accidents, the basic information to manage water quality in lakes and to make environmental policy. Therefore, the present study applied Self-Organizing Map (SOM) showing excellent performance in classifying patterns with weights estimated by self-organization. The result revealed five patterns and TOC versus rainfall-storage data according to the respective patterns were depicted in two-dimensional plots. The visualization presented better understanding of data distribution pattern. The result in the present study might be expected to contribute to the modeling procedure for data prediction in the future.

This paper describes a monitoring system that examines water quality by analyzing behavioral patterns
of fishes. The water quality inspection system (WQIS) captures color images of fishes with a
CCD camera, extracts out fish regions from the images, and determines motion characteristics of fishes
by computing consecutive frames. We define five types of measures that reflect behavioral patterns of
fishes : floatness, fledness, clustemess, diffusiveness, and mobility. These measures are utilized when
the system performs fuzzy inference to induce the conclusion about water quality. We believe that the
proposed system can be a solution for securing clean water.

As part of the Four Major Rivers Restoration Project, multifunctional weirs have been constructed in the rivers and operated for river-level management. As the weirs play a role in draining water from tributaries, the aim of this study was to determine the influence of the weirs on the water level of the Nam River, which is one of the Nakdong River's tributaries. Self-organizing maps (SOMs) and a locally weighted scatterplot smoothing (LOWESS) technique were applied to analyze the patterns and trends of water level and quality of the Nakdong River, considering the operation of the Changnyeong-Haman weir, which is located where the Nam River flows into the Nakdong River. The software program HEC-RAS was used to find the boundary points where the water is well drained. Per the study results at the monitoring points ranging between the junction of the two rivers and 17.5 km upstream toward the Nam River, the multifunctional weir influenced the water level at the Geoyrong and Daesan observation stations on the Nam River and the water quality based on automatic monitoring at the Chilseo station on the Nakdong River was affected strongly by the Nakdong River and partly by the Nam River.
Shallow water withdrawal systems have been replaced with a selected withdrawal system to keep stable raw water quality in spite of occurrence of algae and muddy inflow. Before reconstruction of the water intake tower in Yongdam reservoir supplying water to Gosan water treatment facility, we have predicted flow patterns of inflowing water into the water intake tower for various withdrawal conditions. It has been predicted that the water in the withdrawal layer is significantly inflowed from the front with fast velocity into the water intake tower irrespective of withdrawal depth, while the water away from the withdrawal layer is withdrawed a little from the side with slow velocity.

This study analyzed the characteristics of sewer flow and its water quality, and investigated changes in the characteristics in three areas where the sewer rehabilitation projects have been carried out. In S1 area, the patterns of the flow became regular and the range of the fluctuation decreased after the sewer rehabilitation. The flow and its BOD concentration increased. The infiltration/inflow and exfiltration showed clear distinction before and after the sewer rehabilitation in this area. In S2 area, the patterns and the range of the fluctuation of the flow made no differences before and after the sewer rehabilitation. The flow decreased slightly and its BOD concentration increased considerably after the sewer rehabilitation. Big decrement in stormwater inflow but small in exfiltration appeared in this area. In S3 area, the patterns and the range of the fluctuation of the flow made no differences before and after the sewer rehabilitation. The flow decreased slightly and its BOD concentration increased in a small rate in this area.
The aims of this study were to investigate and confirm the occurrence and distribution patterns of blood lipid lower agents (BLLAs) in Nakdong river basin (mainstream and its tributaries). 4 (atorvastatin, lovastatin, mevastatin and simvastatin) out of 5 statins and 2 (clofibric acid and zemfibrozil) out of 3 fibrates were detected in 29 sampling sites and simvastatin (>50%) was predominant compound followed by atorvastatin, lovastatin and clofibric acid. The total concentration levels of BLLAs on April, August and November 2009 in surface water samples ranged from ND~25.7 ng/L, ND~18.8 and ND to 38.8 ng/L, respectively. The highest concentration level of BLLAs in the mainstream and tributaries in Nakdong river were Goryeong and Jincheon-cheon, respectively. The sewage treatment plants (STPs) along the river affect the BLLAs levels in river and the BLLAs levels decreased with downstream because of dilution effects.
The aims of this study were to investigate and confirm the occurrence and distribution patterns of iodinated X-ray contrast media (iopromide) in Nakdong river basin (mainstream and its tributaries). Iopromide was detected in 16 sampling sites. The concentration levels of iopromide on February 2011 and on October 2011 in surface water samples ranged from not detected (ND) to 1481.1 ng/L and ND to 1168.2 ng/L, respectively. The highest concentration level of iopromide in the mainstream and tributaries in Nakdong river were Goryeong and Jincheon-cheon, respectively. The sewage treatment plants (STPs) along the river affect the iopromide levels in river and the iopromide levels decreased with downstream because of dilution effects.

Climate change causes fluctuations in water quality in the aquatic environment, which can cause changes in water circulation patterns and severe adverse effects on aquatic ecosystems in the future. Therefore, research is needed to predict and respond to water quality changes caused by climate change in advance. In this study, we tried to predict the dissolved oxygen (DO), chlorophyll-a, and turbidity of the Paldang reservoir for about two weeks using long short-term memory (LSTM) and gated recurrent units (GRU), which are deep learning algorithms based on recurrent neural networks. The model was built based on real-time water quality data and meteorological data. The observation period was set from July to September in the summer of 2021 (Period 1) and from March to May in the spring of 2022 (Period 2). We tried to select an algorithm with optimal predictive power for each water quality parameter. In addition, to improve the predictive power of the model, an important variable extraction technique using random forest was used to select only the important variables as input variables. In both Periods 1 and 2, the predictive power after extracting important variables was further improved. Except for DO in Period 2, GRU was selected as the best model in all water quality parameters. This methodology can be useful for preventive water quality management by identifying the variability of water quality in advance and predicting water quality in a short period.
