The research grasps water quality contamination source by investigating the data that are superordinate laws and the related plans implemented for establishing water quality improvement measures of upper stream for Chung-Ju Dam, present conditions of the hydraulic and hydrology, the present conditions and plans of environment basic facilities, and present conditions of main contamination source's occurrence load and discharge load, etc. The research used the QUAL2E simulation which is being widely applied to simulation of river water quality because the QUAL2E has high credibility among water quality simulations known throughout the country. On basis of this research, regulations and politic alternatives are required in order to water quality improvement upper stream for the Chung-ju dam, especially establishing processing facilities in the region where loading amount is concentrated should be considered with the additional research regarding cost-efficient facility of pollution source.
With various reservoirs, dams and reduction of water velocity in downstream, rivers in Korea often have characteristics of accumulation of pollutants. Therefore, the main focus of water quality modeling in Korea needs to be shifted from DO to algae and organic matter. Moreover the structures of water quality models should be modified to have capability of simulating BOD which is a key factor of total water pollution load management in Korea as laboratory experiment BOD (Bottle $BOD_5$). In the SWAT model which is one of the widely used water quality models in Korea, the channel water quality module is using main algorithm of the QUAL2E model which has limitations in simulating algae, organic matter and Bottle BOD5 etc. To overcome this hindrance, in this study, the improved channel water quality module of the SWAT model (Q-SWAT) was proposed by linking the algorithms of the QUAL-NIER model which was developed based on the QUAL2E model to the SWAT model. The algorithms estimating the increase of internal organic matter by fractionization algal metabolism process and calculating Bottle $BOD_5$ were added and the results of proposed model were compared to those of the original SWAT model. The results of comparison test are showing that more accurate BOD values can be obtained with the Q-SWAT model and it is anticipated that the Q-SWAT model can be used as an effective tool of decision support through the water quality simulation and long term pollution source analysis.
The effect of water quality improvement of combined sewage by detention pond has been studied. It is convinced that the pollutant load and peak flow through the combined sewer by first rainfall and runoff can be decreased by detention pond sited at the outlet of small basin. Hydraulic modeling of detention panel was performed for two cases of sedimentation pond and gravel contact pond. It has been recognized that it is more efficient to reduce the pollutant of combined sewage when the combined sewage is released alter a fixed detention time in the detention pond than it is released continuously without detention time. The gravel contact detention pond shows higher pollutant removal rate than the sedimentation detention pond in all pollutants. When it comes to gravel contact detention pond, the gravel pond filled with crushed gravel has a higher pollutant removal rate than that filled with river gravel.
We researched the vegetation restoration of 5 urban streams Mugeo-choen, Yaksa-choen, Yeocheon-choen, Myeongjeong-choen and Cheokgwa-choen in Ulsan established as nature-friendly streams by improving water quality and river environment. Ecological restoration effects have resulted from the establishment of streams, which involved supplying sufficient maintenance water for each streams, eliminating the covered sections, preventing the inflow of wastewater, doing vegetation composition, since 5 to 10 years ago. The vegetation inhabitations were compared according to the conditions of physical characteristics and water quality, inland and foreland. In the Cheokgwa-cheon, which is almost a natural river, the ecological integrity of the vegetation population has been maintained quite well. The Mugeo-cheon and the Meongjeong-cheon have cleanly shown the vegetation restoration effects resulting from supplying sustainable maintenance water and wastewater treatments. In the Yaksa-cheon and the Yeocheon-cheon, on the other hand, the vegetation restoration effects and inhabitations were low due to the inflow of wastewater and sledges in some part of stream though the improvement of water quality.
Objectives: The objective of this study was to build COD regression models for the Han River and evaluate water quality. Methods: Water quality data sets for the dry season (as of January) during a four-year period (2012-2015) were collected from the database of the Han River automatic water quality monitoring stations. Statistical techniques, including combined genetic algorithm-multiple linear regression (GA-MLR) were used to build five-descriptor COD models. Multivariate statistical techniques such as principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (CA) are useful tools for extracting meaningful information. Results: The $r^2$ of the best COD models provided significant high values (> 0.8) between 2012 and 2015. Total organic carbon (TOC) was a surrogate indicator for COD (as COD/TOC) with high reliability ($r^2=0.63$ in 2012, $r^2=0.75$ for 2013, $r^2=0.79$ for 2014 and $r^2=0.85$ for 2015). The ratios of COD/TOC were calculated as 2.08 in 2012, 1.79 in 2013, 1.52 and 1.45 in 2015, indicating that biodegradability in the water body of the Han River was being sustained, thereby further improving water quality. The BOD/COD ratio supported these findings. The cluster analysis revealed higher annual levels of microorganisms and phosphorous at stations along the Hangang-Seoul and Hantangang areas. Nevertheless, the overall water quality over the last four years showed an observable trend toward continuous improvement. These findings also suggest that non-point pollution control strategies should consider the influence of upstreams and downstreams to protect water quality in the Han River. Conclusion: This data analysis procedure provided an efficient and comprehensive tool to interpret complex water quality data matrices. Results from a trend analysis provided much important information about sources and parameters for Han River water quality management.
Recently, water supply management technology is highly developed, and a computer simulation model plays a critical role for estimating hydraulics and water quality in water distribution networks (WDNs). However, a simulation of complex large water networks is computationally intensive, especially for the water quality simulations, which require a short simulation time step and a long simulation time period. Thus, it is often prohibitive to analyze the water quality in real-scale water networks. In this study, in order to improve the computational efficiency of water quality simulations in complex water networks, a hierarchical water-quality-simulation technique was proposed. The water network is hierarchically divided into two sub-networks for improvement of computing efficiency while preserving water quality simulation accuracy. The proposed approach was applied to a large-scale real-life water network that is currently operating in South Korea, and demonstrated a spatiotemporal distribution of chlorine concentration under diverse chlorine injection scenarios.

Four major river basin in Korea has been managed with Total Maximum Daily Load(TMDL) System. Water quality indicators as targeted pollutants for TMDL were BOD and TP. In order to satisfy water quality criteria, government allocation using public treatment facilities and its action plan has been used. However, the role to improve water quality were recently faced to its limitation. It is time to require the role of non-government allocation in private discharge facilities to control good water quality. This study investigated three different scenarios in reduction demands of non-government allocations about industry and private sewages. The three different scenarios were discharge under 1) legal water quality standard, 2) water quality level in 2011 and 3) current water quality level with maximum value in group. The results showed that reduction potential in water discharge for TP indicator was 1,118kg/day, under second scenario with 20% of deduction. This results arrived at 42% of whole reduction potential costs and 0.012mg/L improvement in water quality. In conclusion, to intrigue voluntary participation in non-government allocation, various benefits such as tax reduction, tax exemption, and water quality trading should be provided.

To provide the basic information for the water quality improvement of the Geumkang River Basin, the water qualities of the Namdae-cheon watershed were investigated from May in 1999 to September in 2003.
Water quality and plankton community dynamics after the introduction of two domestic freshwater shellfishes (Unio douglasiae Griffith & Pidgeon and Cipangoplaudina chinese malleata Reeve), were monitored daily in enclosures, which constructed in the tidal zone of eutrophic agricultural reservoir (Shingu reservoir, Korea) for one week between July 31 and August 6, 2007. This biomanipulation study to improve the water quality of eutrophic lake, comprised eight enclosures (duplicate x four kinds), enclosure had no mussels (Control), stocked only with U. douglasiae at density of 60 individuals (UD), stocked only with C. chinese malleata at density of 60 individuals (CCM), and combined-stocked with 30 individuals of UD and 30 individuals of CCM (MIX), respectively. Our results clearly indicate that UD strongly decreased the concentration of chlorophyll-a and increased the water transparency, whereas CCM and MIX (included CCM) did increase algal density or decrease transparency, due perhaps to the disturbance of C. chinese malleata. Therefore, the field application of shellfish to enhance the water quality of eutrophic agricultural reservoir, should consider the grazing characteristics of biological control agents, especially active moving animals like snail.
