  • Forecasting of water quality variation is not an easy process due to the complicated nature of various water quality factors and their interrelationships. The objective of this study is to test the applicability of neural network models to the forecasting of the water quality at Gongju station in Geum River. This is done by forecasting monthly water qualities such as DO, BOD, and TN, and comparing with those obtained by ARIMA model. The neural network models of this study use BP(Back Propagation) algorithm for training. In order to improve the performance of the training, the models are tested in three different styles ; MANN model which uses the Moment-Adaptive learning rate method, LMNN model which uses the Levenberg-Marquardt method, and MNN model which separates the hidden layers for judgement factors from the hidden layers for water quality data. the results show that the forecasted water qualities are reasonably close to the observed data. And the MNN model shows the best results among the three models tested

  • Annual variation of water qualities in the Shihwa Lake were observed 18 times from June 1996 to October 2001. We studied at the station of the upper streams and near the water gate of lake. After the flow of the outer seawater through the water gate, the surface salinity in Shihwa Lake increased to the range of 25-30 psu in both stations after October 1998. Due to the declination of the salinity differences between the surface and the bottom water, the pycnocline in which had existed until 1997 has weakened, and made the water column mix vertically. This led to the improvement of anoxic/hypoxic environment at bottom waters after April 1998. However, despite the continuous flow of the outer seawater, the concentrations of chlorophyll-a at surface layer were varied from $2{\mu}g/l\;to\;60{\mu}g/l$, and these values indicated the eutrophication. The following organic matter load was greatly influencing the surface layer's COD concentration. During the rainy season, the salinity at the surface layer to the below 15 psu resulting in stratification between the surface and bottom layer. Organic matters that were provided from the surface layer to the bottom layer due to active primary production in the year exhausted dissolved oxygen at the bottom layer, and the bulks of organic matters at bottom gave rise to hypoxic or anoxic environment. It was observed that the enrichment of ammonia and phosphate were main factors to worsen the water quality of the Shihwa Lake. The results of examining the annual variations in Shiwha Lake through principal component analysis shown that water characteristics in the rainy season were similar with those before input of outer sea water.

  • As an improvement on qualities of lives and a change in the habitual ways people eat require more water to be used for daily lives, the amount of wastewater generated from our usual lives is also expected to be in higher rate of consumption. The unit loading factor of sewage flow-rate based upon the number of people living in the apartment complexes has to be found for the design of the sewage or wastewater treatment facilities. These data are definitely thought to be useful for the plans to operate the sewage treatment facilities and for those to establish the plans toward a management of water qualities. Thus this study has shown that the data regarding the water supplies and the number of apartment residents within the 123 districts of KNHC(Korea National Housing Corporation) were collected and analyzed. One district in Seoul and the other local district were chosen an the experimental sites for th hourly, daily, weekly and seasonal measurements of the influent sewage flow-rate. The unit loading factor of influent sewage flow-rate were determined through the comparison of total sewage amount in combination with the number of people residing in two apartment complexes with supplying amount of water.

  • Stream and groundwater qualities of small agricultural watershed in Kangwon Probince, Korea were monitored 1 to 2 years, and the relationships between stream and groundwater qualities and seasonal water quality changes analyzed. Flooded paddy fields influenced groundwater level and quality during rice culture. The differences between groundwater levels during rice culture and non-culture spans were between 0.8 and 2.91 m. Seasonal changes of total nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen concentrations of stream and groundwater were very similar and groundwater quality was thought to have a profound impact on stream quality of the research watersheds. Suspended solids and BOD maintained the first degree stream water quality throughout the monitoring period except for a few and short flooding spans. The concentrations of total phosphorus and total bacteria of both waters showed wide variations and any seasonal trends were not observed. Long-term monitoring studies on small rural watersheds were recommended to understand the pattern of both stream and groundwater quality changes with respect to land use, season and cultural practice, and to apply the results to develop effective water quality management policies for large river and domestic water supply systems.

  • Optimal sludge recycling ratio for maximum total nitrogen(TN) removal efficiency was calculated stoichiometrically using nitrification and denitrification reaction with given influent water qualities in anoxic-oxic process which was one of the popular nitrogen removal system. The water quality items for stoichiometric calculation were ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, alkalinity, COD, and dissolved oxygen which could affect nitrification and denitrification. Optimal sludge recycling ratio for maximum TN removal efficiency was expressed by those five influent water qualities. TN concentration calculated stoichiometrically had kept good relationship with reported TN concentration in each tank and final effluent. In addition, it was possible to expect the TN concentration in final effluent by stoichiometric calculation within ${\pm}5.0\;mg/L$.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop the stochastic stream water quality model for the intake station of Chung-Ju city waterworks in the Han river system. This model was based on the theory of Box-Jenkins Multiplicative ARIMA(SARIMA) and the state space model to simulate changes of water qualities. Variable of water qualities included in the model are temperature and dissolved oxygen(DO). The models development were based on the data obtained from Jan. 1990 to Dec. 1997 and followed the typical procedures of the Box-Jenkins method including identification and estimation. The seasonality of DO and temperature data to formulate for the SARIMA model are conspicuous and the period of revolution was twelve months. Both models had seasonality of twelve months and were formulates as SARIMA {TEX}$(2,1,1)(1,1,1)_{12}${/TEX} for DO and temperature. The models were validated by testing normality and independency of the residuals. The prediction ability of SARIMA model and state space model were tested using the data collected from Jan. 1998 to Oct. 1999. There were good agreements between the model predictions and the field measurements. The performance of the SARIMA model and state space model were examined through comparisons between the historical and generated monthly dissolved oxygen series. The result reveal that the state space model lead to the improved accuracy.

  • The Yellow Sea is a marginal sea, surrounded by Chinese Continent and Korean Peninsula, with wide continental shelves and long coastlines. And the Yellow Sea is abundant with living resources and with coastal areas for leisure and aesthetic qualities. However, the Yellow Sea being a semi-enclosed water body, its water quality has been recently deteriorated due to rapid industrialization and urbanization of the coastal countries. Since marine pollution is transboundary, the needs for international cooperation among China, North Korea, Japan, Russia and Korea are urgent for the environmental protection of the Yellow Sea. The objectives of the present paper are to review the on-going research and to proposed the future prospects on international cooperation for the protection of water qualities of the Yellow Sea.

  • Nowadays in power plant feed water control, it is very important to retain the stable drum level though power changes very fast. For the stable drum level in power plant, we have to model our plants and get the system functions. We make the L.Q. controller by using these functions and apply it to these systems. And we get the more stable drum level which is controlled by feed water qualities.
