Nature-based solutions (NBS) offer a wide variety of techniques that promote cost-efficient stormwater management practices. In particular, low impact development facilities utilize NBS principles to restore the ecosystem services in a highly-urbanized area. Despite the advancements in these technologies, several considerations should still be addressed to ensure optimum functionality and attainment of desired pollutant removal efficiency a LID facility. This study evaluated the mass flushing characteristics of pollutants in an urban catchment and the efficiency of a small constructed wetland (SCW) in treating urban stormwater runoff. 21 rainfall events from 2010 to 2018 were monitored to determine and quantify stormwater pollutants. The highest pollutant washoff was observed on rainfall depths ranging from 0.1mm to 10mm, whereas events with greater rainfall depths exhibited lower pollutant concentrations due to dilution effect. However, the SCW manifested lower pollutant-removal performance on rainfall depths exceeding 10mm due to the exceedance of the facility's design rainfall. This study is beneficial in assessing the dynamics of pollutant washoff and efficiency of LID facilities subjected under various external factors.
SWAT model was applied for the Nakdong River Basin to characterize water quality variability and assess the feasibility of using the load duration curve to water quality management. The basin was divided into 67 sub-basins considering various watershed environment, and rainfall runoff and pollutant loading were simulated based on 6 year measurements of meteo-hydrological data, discharge data of treatment plants, and water quality data (SS, T-N and T-P). The results demonstrate that non-point source loads during wet season increase by 80 ~ 95% of total loads. Although the rate of water flow governs the amount of SS that is transported to the main streams, nutrient concentrations are highly elevated during dry season by being concentrated. This phenomenon is more pronounced in the lower basin, receiving large amounts of urban point source discharges such as treated sewages. Also, the load duration curves (LDC) demonstrate dominant source problems based on the load exceedances, showing that SS concentrations are associated with the rainy season and nutrients, such as T-P, may be more concentrated at low flow and more diluted at higher flow. Overall, the LDC method could be used conveniently to assess watershed characteristics and pollutant loads in watershed scale.
According to the technical guideline of water pollutant load management, the rainfall captured ratio which can be estimated by the empirical formula is an important element to estimate reduction loads of non-point pollutants water quality control basin. In this study, the rainfall captured ratio is altered to stormwater captured ratio considering its meaning in the technical guideline of water pollutant load management, and the new empircal formula of stormwater captured ratio is suggested. In order to do this, we calculate stormwater captured ratio by using the hourly rainfall data of seven urban weather stations (Busan, Daegu, Daejeon, Gangreung, Seoul, Gwangju, and Jeju) for 43 years. The regression coefficients of the existed empirical formula cannot reflect the catchment properties at all, because they are fixed values regardless of regions. However the empirical formula of stormwater captured ratio has flexible regression coefficients by runoff coefficient(C), so it is allowed to consider the characteristics of runoff in catchment. It is expected that reduction loads of storage based water quality control basin can be more reasonably estimated than before.

Characteristics of concentrations of total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and chemical oxygen demand (COD) pollutant in percolated water at four paddy field sites (Soro, Odong, Munui, and Boeun) were investigated by a nonparametric test. Percolation rate measurement and percolated water sampling were taken during irrigation periods at $5{\sim}10$ day intervals. The normality of percolation rate and pollutant concentrations were examined using histogram, boxplot, and the Kolmogorov-Smirnov (K-S) test. Pollutant concentrations in percolated water showed positively skewed distribution. The median concentrations of pollutant were 1.91 mg/L for TN, 0.021 mg/L for TP, and 6.6 mg/L for COD, which were lower than its arithmetic mean concentrations by $35\%$ for TN, $36\%$ for TP, and $13\%$ for COD. The median concentrations of TN and TP differed significantly among sample sites according to the Kruskal-Wallis test. However, median concentrations were not significantly different among month except for TN and TP of Soro and COD of Odong. The percolation load of pollutants during irrigation periods in the study area were estimated at $3.12{\sim}7.75\;kg/ha$ for TN, $0.033{\sim}0.155\;kg/ha$ for TP, and 10.7 kg/ha for COD, which were much lower than respective values reported in Japan.
A hydraulically and hydrologically based estimation method of pollutant delivery load for water quality modeling is proposed. The proposed method works on grid basis and routes overland flows from one cell to the next following the maximum downslope directions. The method is able to consider spatially-varied data of source pollutant, topography, land slopes, soil characteristics, land use and aspects, which can be extracted from geographic information systems (GIS) and from digital elevation models (DEMs). Because of this feature, the proposed method can be expected to be used for evaluating the impacts of various practices on watershed management for water quality.

To study the dispersion process and residence time of anthropogenic pollutant in Masan bay, a three-dimensional hydrodynamic model coupled to a particle tracking model, EFDC, is applied. Particle tracking model simulated the instantaneous release of particles emulating discharge from river and wastewater treatment plant to show the behaviour of pollutant in terms of water circulation and water exchange. Modelled outcomes for water circulation were in good agreement with tidal elevation and current data. The results of particle tracking model show that over half of particles released from northern Masan bay transport to out of area while the particles from Dukdong wastewater treatment plant transport to northern area. This meant pollution source from inside and outside of the northern area can affect water quality of northern Masan bay.

This study aimed to determine the applicability of drones and air quality sensors in environmental monitoring of air pollutant emissions by developing and testing two new methods. The first method used orthoimagery for precise monitoring of pollutant-emitting facilities. The second method used atmospheric sensors for monitoring air pollutants in emissions. Results showed that ground sample distance could be established within 5 cm during the creation of orthoimagery for monitoring emissions, which allowed for detailed examination of facilities with naked eyes. For air quality monitoring, drones were flown on a fixed course and measured the air quality in point units, thus enabling mapping of air quality through spatial analysis. Sensors that could measure various substances were used during this process. Data on particulate matter were compared with data from the National Air Pollution Measurement Network to determine its future potential to leverage. However, technical development and applications for environmental monitoring of pollution-emitting facilities are still in their early stages. They could be limited by meteorological conditions and sensitivity of the sensor technology. This research is expected to provide guidelines for environmental monitoring of pollutant-emitting facilities using drones.

The temporal trends of the prioritized toxic water pollutants generated and discharged from the industrial facilities in the Geum-River basin, Korea were analyzed with the results of the nationwide Water Pollution Source Survey conducted in 2001 - 2012. The statistical results indicated rapid increase in the volume of raw toxic wastewaters whereas the amount of each toxic pollutant kept fluctuating for 12 years. Serious discrepancies in the survey data of the same type of industries demonstrated a low reliability of the survey result, which stemmed from several error factors. A unit-load for each type of industrial facility was devised to estimate the amount of prioritized toxic water pollutant based on the total volume of industrial wastewater generated from the same type of industrial facilities. The supplementary measures with an effective permit issuance policy and adding survey parameters of terminal wastewater treatment plants to use them as references to the Water Pollution Source Survey were suggested as means to minimize the errors associated with the false reports from the industries.

In many studies, the Numeric Integration (NI) method has been widely used to calculate pollutant loads from the watershed because it is easy to apply. However, there have been many needs for more accurate pollutant loads estimation method with the restricted number of water quality samples. However, the ESTIMATOR model does not allow the users to define the regression model to explain the measured flow and water quality relationship, indicating the ESTIMATOR model is not flexible. The LOADEST model allows the user to choose the model type from 11 predefined general forms of regression equations. Annual loads of T-N and T-P with the LOADEST model were 0.70 times and 0.84 times of those by NI method, respectively. The coefficient of determination ($R^2$) of the LOADEST regression for the T-N and T-P were 0.92 and 0.72, respectively. This indicates that the load estimation regression model with the LOADEST for the study watershed explains the relationship between the observed flow and water quality data well reasonably well. Based on these findings, we suggest that the LOADEST model estimated regression equation could be used to estimate pollutant loads using the measured flow data for the study watershed.

Point & nonpoint source pollutant loads were calculated in Juam lake watershed using GIS, and water quality was simulated using water quality model. Point source pollutant loads were estimated using the unit pollutant loads presented by the Ministry of Environment(MOE, 1998). Nonpoint source pollutant loads were estimated using the value of the direct runoff multiplied by expected mean concentration. The direct runoff was calculated using SCS curve number method. Water quality simulation was conducted using WASP model(2001) developed by U.S. EPA. In order to apply the model, Juam lake watershed was divided into 44 subbasins according to slope, elevation, soil type, landuse and precipitation. Then the model was applied to one subbasin. Simulation results were compared to observed values and the result should good agreement with each other.
