  • Water footprint means the direct and indirect water resource amount used for the life cycle of different goods, services and industries. In this study, the direct and indirect water resource consumption in industrial sectors were calculated by using water footprint evaluation method. As a result, agriculture and marine product industry takes part of 93% of whole water resource amount, showing the greatest amount of basic unit of water coefficient (637 $m^3/won$) following by petroleum and cool products industry of about 13 $m^3/won$. In the agriculture and marine product industry, the direct water consumption was only 25 billion $m^3$ compared to the indirect water, which is 130 billion $m^3$. The next highest industry was chemical product industry, which consists of 2 billion $m^3$ of the direct water and 4.5 billion $m^3$ of the indirect water consumption. In case of industries which have high direct water, it would be more effective to reduce amount of water related to the industry than to reduce water in actual process. This water footprint of each industry and evaluation method will be useful tool and method for development of national water management policy and regulation.

  • Recently, as the extreme drought continued due to the reckless development and the dramatical climate change, national concern about the water management issues has been increased rapidly around the world, especially in Korea. Meanwhile, it is necessary to analyze and review the related cases in Australia, where they have developed the consistently, eco-friendly and systematically management from the national level, which is similar to that of Korea in difficult circumstances. Australia has been suffered by repeated droughts and floods due to low rainfall and dryness, and water disputes were begun with immigrant settlement in the 1890s. In the early days, water management agreements for efficient distribution of water resources, water use regulation programs, and federal water laws were enacted, and now the established water management system in which development and conservation are assumed to be well balanced. In Korea, however, in the past, the Ministry of Environment was responsible for water quality issues while the quantity was managed by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and the main local departments for water management were divided. Therefore, it was difficult to manage the integrated water management due to problems such as duplicated works, excessive investments, and inefficiency. To resolve this situation, in 2018, all water management functions were unified, such as enacting the fundamental water-related laws, thereby laying the foundation for the integrated water management system for each basin. From 2019, even the integrated water management system was implemented, we are promoting the effect of sustainable water resource management. In order to establish a management policy for efficient and eco-friendly water management, the IWRM (Integrated Water Resource Management) of Australia, which has been devised in various ways, was analyzed and compared with the present situations and cases occurred in Korea, and the implications from this study would be suggested the future of IWRM in Korea.

  • In recent, according to the tightening of environment regulation policy, the height of the site of the power plant is increased and the length of the cooling water pipe is increased. This has a serious impact on the stability of the plant. This study analyzes the transient phenomenon using LIQT 7.2, an unsteady state one-dimensional analysis software, to secure the stability of 1,000 MW high-capacity coal-fired power plant cooling water system with high head. To prevent water hammer, The effects on performance characteristics were predicted by individual and combination application. The surge pressure of the cooling water which occurs when the pump was stopped without installing the anti-surge devices was the largest at the pump outlet side. The most effective and simple way to reduce surge pressure in these cooling water systems is to combine a vacuum breaker with a hydraulic non-return valve, which is an essential device for pump protection.

  • Through concentrated investments in environmental regulations centered around BOD, which is a biodegradable matter index, and basic environmental infrastructures, national BOD pollution level has continuously improved. Nonetheless, limitations of BOD management system has become evident through nation-wide stagnation and/or increases of refractory organic matters, such as COD, at main drinking water sources, and the need for a new index, which can easily indicate different environmental conditions, has increased. Therefore, this study suggests a new organic management index for a proper management of surface water. $COD_{Cr}$ and TOC were examined as candidates for surface water quality management index, and it was found that TOC was more appropriate than $COD_{Cr}$ as an organic matter management index. Through this study, it was found that TOC possesses following qualities: a more representative index; international acceptability; monitoring program is easier; better availability of analysis techniques; better accuracy and precision of analysis; less time required for analysis; ease of operation; management of disinfection byproducts; connection with present policies; existence of foreign and domestic application case studies; and correlation with water ecosystem.

  • Development of unconventional natural resources such as shale gas, shale oil and coal bed methane, has been activated and improved the productivity due to the recent technology advance in horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing. However, the flowback water mixed with chemical additives, and the brine water containing oil, gas, high levels of salts and radioactive metals is produced during the gas production. Potential negative environmental impact due to large volumes of the produced wastewater is increasingly seen as the major obstacles to the unconventional natural resource development. In this study an integrated framework for the flowback and brine water treatment is proposed, and we reviewed the upcoming state of the art technology in water treatment. Basic separation processes which include not only membrane, evaporation, crystallization and desalination processes, but the potential water reuse and recycling techniques can be applied for the unconventional natural resource industry.

  • In order to establish drought policy, the estimation of drought period for each drought situation should be preceded. Non-linear Water Balance Model(NWBM) and palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI) can be used for analysis of drought period. As a water balance method considering moisture transfer between land surface and atmosphere, NWBM can be used to estimate transition time between dry and wet period induced by stochastic fluctuations. PDSI is also water balance method to show drought severity comparing actual precipitation with climatically appropriate precipitation based on precipitation and potential evapotranspiration. In this study, the drought periods are estimated using NWBM and PDSI for the Han River Basin. The drought periods according to the soil moisture estimated by NWBS and the drought periods according to drought severity index estimated by PDSI show similar trend. The estimated drought period from extreme drought to wet condition for the Han River Basin is about 3years.

  • In response to anthropogenic global warming due to a buildup greenhouse gas, the effect of the air temperature on water temperature has been noticed. Therefore, effects have been made to build an air/water temperature relationship at three study regions using the data collected by the Ministry of the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (MOMAF). The air/water relationship varies with time-scale and weekly time-scale was chosen for the study. The data were fitted to the S-shaped non-linear relationship, and the parameters for the S-curve were derived using a single-criteria multi-parameter optimization scheme. Separate regression curves were fitted to consider seasonal hysteresis at the Masan site. The study results support the S-shaped non-linear relationship is the best fit for the air/water relationship at the Korean coastal zone. This study will contribute to determine the future policy regarding water quality and ecosystem for the decision-driving organization.

  • The treatment performance and operational parameters of a tertiary wastewater treatment process a biological filtration system were investigated. The biological filtration system consisted of a nitrification filter (Fiter 1) and a polishing filter with anoxic and aerobic parts (Filter 2). SS, T-C-BOD, and T-N in effluent were kept stable at less than 3, 5 mg/L, and 5 mgN/L, respectively, under a HRT in Filter (filter-bed) of 0.37~2.3 h. T-N at the outlet of Filter 2 were about 1~5 mgN/L under the condition of LV of 50~202 m/d. In Filter 2, denitrification was accomplished under LV of 50~168 m/d in a 1 m filter-bed. However, the denitrification capacity reached the maximum when the linear velocity was increased to 202 m/d. Relationship between increase in microorganism and headloss was clearer in Filter 2. As a result, the denitrification rate increased from 1.0~2.3 kgN/($m^3-filter-bed{\cdot}d$) as the headloss increased. The COD removal rate was 6.0~9.6 kgCOD/($m^3-filter-bed{\cdot}d$) when operated with Filters 1 and 2. These results mean that captured bacteria contributed a part of COD consumption and denitrification. The maximum nitrification and denitrification rate was 0.5 and 4 kgN/($m^3-filter-bed{\cdot}d$) in Filter 1 and 2.The ratio of backwashing water to the treated water was about 5~10 %. In Filter 1, wasted sludge in backwashing was only 0.7~5.3 gSS/($m^3$-treated water). In Filter 2, added methanol was converted into sludge and its value was 8.0~24 gSS/($m^3$-treated water). These results proved that this process is both convenient to install as tertiary treatment and cost effective to build and operate.

  • Investigation and policy related to floating debris are focused on water treatment or disposal costs, and water pollution caused by floating debris has not been evaluated. In this study, it was surveyed the water environment pollution on the stagnation zone by floating debris in Nakdong River basin of Busan Metropolitan City. The water quality of the constant stagnation zone had lower DO than that of the non-stagnation zone. COD and Chl-a showed similar concentrations in the both zones. As a result of the collecting net surveys which were kept floating during 3 months, the most abundant species(4 species) of arthropods appeared, and Chironomidae sp. is dominant. It was also resistant to the deteriorated water quality, and emerged as a Lepomis macrochirus on the stagnant waters with a slowly flow rate.
