  • In this research, it is proposed that optimization method is introduced and applied to the design of pipeline system in multi-regional water supply project, which has been constructed to settle the regional unbalance problems of available water resources. For the purpose, interface programs are developed to integrate linear programming model and KYPIPE model which is used for optimization and hydraulic analysis, respectively. The developed program is applied to the pipeline system design of multi-regional water supply project. The optimal diameters from the application of linear programming technique are compared with those from conventional method that is time-consuming and tedious trail and error process. Since the conventional design largely depends upon the experience of designers and the results of general hydraulic analysis, it can not be reasonable and consistent. The application of linear programming technique can make it possible to design pipeline system optimally by using same design factors of general hydraulic models. The model can select commercial discrete pipe diameter as optimal size by using pipe length as decision variables. The developed model is applied to Pohang multi-regional water supply system design with two different objective functions, which are initial construction cost and annual cost including electric cost. As results, it is calculated that the initial construction cost of 1,449,740 thousand won is saved and annual cost of 128,951 thousand won is saved for a year within study year. Also, the optimal site of pump station is selected on 5th pipe, which is located between the diverging junction to Kangdong(2) province and the diverging junction to Cheonbuk province. It is explained that pump cost is less than pipe cost in this application case study due to little pump station scale. In the case of water supply with large pump capacity, it is reasonal that the increase of pipe size is more efficient instead the increase of pump station capacity to save annual cost.

  • Geothermal effects on the underground water conveyance pipe system have been investigated through the multiregional water supply system from Paldang water intake station. To make an investigation of raw water thermal energy, temperature sensors are installed the surface of the pipes of metropolitan area water supply system. In 2009 winter and early spring seasons, the monthly averaged temperatures at Paldang 2 intake stations are $1.94^{\circ}C$ in February, $4.96^{\circ}C$ in March, and $10.56^{\circ}C$ in April. After the transfer in 26.0 km distance of tunnel and buried pipe, the raw water temperatures are raised to $3.13^{\circ}C$, $6.04^{\circ}C$, and $11.39^{\circ}C$ respectively. As the temperature difference between the raw water and the air reduces, the temperature increasement is reduced by $1.19^{\circ}C$ in Feb., $1.08^{\circ}C$ in Mar., and $0.83^{\circ}C$ in Apr. Since the flowrate is over 1,150,000 $m^3$/day, it is estimated that the water exchanges a huge amount of heat over 1.0 Tcal a day with the ground.

  • Abstract This paper presents a heuristic method for optimal design of water distribution system with multiple sources and potential links. In multiple source pipe network, supply rate at each source node affects the total cost of the system because supply rates are not uniquely determined. The Linear Minimum Cost Flow (LMCF) model may be used to a large scale pipe network with multiple sources to determine supply rate at each source node. In this study the heuristic method based on the LMCF is suggested to determine supply rate at each source node and then to optimize the given layout. The heuristic method in turn perturbs links in the longest path of the network to obtain the supply rates which make the optimal design of the pipe network. Once the best tree network is obtained, the frequency count of reconnecting links by considering link failure is in turn applied to form loop to enhance the reliability of the best tree network. A sample pipe network is employed to test the proposed method. The results show that the proposed method can yield a lower cost design than the LMCF alone and that the proposed method can be efficiently used to design irrigation systems or rural water distribution systems.

  • A numerical study has been conducted to characterize the transient pressure in a simple water supply pipe system with an air chamber by utilizing a commercial code that employs the method of characteristics. Some results produced for validation in the study agree quite well with the previously reported. Several parameters are than varied. Among them are the valve closure time, the wave speed, the static pressure, the polytropic exponent, the air chamber volume, the diameter and the shape of orifice in the air chamber, etc, while the water temperature and velocity are kept constant at $20^\circ{C}$ and 0.8m/s, respectively. Results reported in this parametric study may be useful to understand the unsteady behavior of the system.

  • The injection concentration of corrosion inhibitor increases under the pH 7, temperature of 2$0^{\circ}C$, and alkalinity of 35 mg/l (as CaCO$_3$), the corrosion rate gradually decreased. When the corrosion inhibitor of 10 mg/l is injected, the corrosion rate for carbon steel pipe, galvanized steel pipe, and copper pipe reduces for 37, 66 and 61 % respectively that it is more efficient on galvanized steel pipe and copper pipe. As a result of examination of corrosion rate at pH 6, 7, and 8 when injecting 10 mg/l of corrosion inhibitor under the conditions of 2$0^{\circ}C$ in water temperature and 35 mg/l (as CaCO$_3$) in alkalinity, the efficiency of the corrosion inhibitor increases as the pH increases. For carbon steel pipe, it does not show much a difference with the change of the pH condition, but galvanized steel pipe and copper pipe clearly show the corrosion rate depending on the change of the pH condition. The efficiency of corrosion inhibitor is low as the concentration of residual chlorine is high, but it does not show a great influence at 0.4 mg/l or less. For each pipe type, in the case of carbon steel pipe, the range of increase of corrosion speed following the residual chloride is higher than the other pipe types. In the meantime, the effect following the residual chlorine in copper pipe is low.

  • Water utilities are making various efforts to reduce water losses from water networks, and an essential part of them is to recognize the moment when a pipe burst occurs during operation quickly. Several physics-based methods and data-driven analysis are applied using real-time flow and pressure data measured through a SCADA system or smart meters, and methodologies based on machining learning are currently widely studied. Water utilities should apply various approaches together to increase pipe burst detection. The most intuitive and explainable water balance method and its procedure were presented in this study, and the applicability and detection performance were evaluated by applying this approach to water supply pipelines. Based on these results, water utilities can establish a mass balance-based pipe burst detection system, give a guideline for installing new flow meters, and set the detection parameters with expected performance. The performance of the water balance analysis method is affected by the water network operation conditions, the characteristics of the installed flow meter, and event data, so there is a limit to the general use of the results in all sites. Therefore, water utilities should accumulate experience by applying the water balance method in more fields.

  • The objective of this study is to determine the appropriate size of the inlet pipe diameter and thereby conduct hydraulic analysis for the Korean water distribution network. To this end, the data tables for equivalent pipe diameters and outflow rates presently employed in Korea were adopted. By incorporating the table of equivalent pipe diameters, it was found that the size of the inlet pipe diameter was overestimated, which can cause shortage of water pressure and malfunctioning or insufficiency of outflow rate in the corresponding adjacent region. However, by conducting hydraulic analysis based on the table of outflow rates, relatively reasonable flow rates were observed. Furthermore, by comparing the real demand-driven analysis (RDDA) approach and demand-driven analysis (DDA) approach toward managing the huge water demand, it was observed that DDA could not effectively respond to real hourly usage conditions, whereas RDDA (which reflects the hourly effects of inlet pipe diameter and storage tanks) demonstrated results similar to that of real water supply.

  • The distribution network is an essential part of all water supply systems. The cost of this portion of any sizable water supply system may amount to most of the entire cost of the project. This study tried to reduce the cost of the distribution system through optimization in system design. To determine pipe diameter considered in water distribution system design, a iterative procedure linked the flow analysis model and optimization model was used. Linear theory was introduced to analyze flowrate and revised-simplex method based on linear programming is used to optimize pipe diameter. This model was applied to wter distribution system with 22 and 35 pipes, and rapidly determine optimized commercial pipe diameters. Keywords : water distribution system, revised simplex method, optimum pipe diameters.

  • In this study, the optimal analysis for pipe network is performed for the combined ideal pipe network system(CASE 1, CASE 2 and CASE 3) which is composed of 25 nodes, 41 elements, and 1 fixed nodal head with evaluating pressure variation distribution of main and branch in grid composed drainage pipe network. The linear analysis technique used as the analysis method in this study, the KYPIPE being used extensively as the linear technique to design and analysis of pipe network is applied. Firstly, in the analysis of pipe network, the CASE 2 and CASE 3 supply same thing(value) in the result of considering the total flow provided each pipeline, but in the general intension in the case of CASE 2, relative width of supply is more large than CASE 1 and CASE 3. Secondly, in the analysis technique of pipe network, CASE 3 is analysed largest as a result of comparing with same heads, and in the order of their size CASE 2 and CASE 1 were determined but the difference doesn't appear to be obvious. Thirdly, as the result of determining main factor, pressure in the design and analysis of net work. CASE 3 is from Node 3 to 25 than CASE 1 and CASE 2 and it is determined in the order of their size, CASE 2 and CASE 1. Finally, in this study, discharge flow distribution is evaluated in the same condition with 3-type CASE in the case of branch position for designing optimal composed drainage pipe network. As the result of that, branch pipe perform. Therefore, it is thought that the efficient and reasonable management of water supply and sewerage design will be possible if it give all our energies to study at the pipe system design in and out of country in the future.

  • For the most efficient operation of water mains, 124 head losses in domestic water supply steel mains were measured to provide the values of friction coefficient and the variable affecting the deterioration rate of Hazen Williams' and Darcy-Weisbach's friction coefficient. The experimental results show that pipe age is governing the friction coefficient of large mains (Diameter > 1100 mm). On the other hands, pipe age and pipe diameter are affecting the variation of carrying capacity for small mains (Diameter < 1100 mm). The friction coefficient of water mains in foreign countries is higher than that in Korea by about 5 to 10 in Hazen Williams' C value. The growing rate of roughness height of domestic water main is about 0.41 mm/year which is higher than the average of United States of America. So further study is required to find out what causes the serious deterioration rate.
