Toshiba has developed a laser peening system for PWRs(pressurized water reactors) as well after the one for BWRs(boiling water reactors), and applied it for BMI(bottom-mounted instrumentation) nozzles, core deluge line nozzles and primary water inlet nozzles of Ikata Unit 1 and 2 of Shikoku Electric Power Company since 2004, which are Japanese operating PWR power plants. Laser pulses were delivered through twin optical fibers and irradiated on two portions in parallel to reduce operation time. For BMI nozzles, we developed a tiny irradiation head for small tubes and we peened the inner surface around J-groove welds after laser ultrasonic testing (LUT) as the remote inspection, and we peened the outer surface and the weld for Ikata Unit 2 supplementary. For core deluge line nozzles and primary water inlet nozzles, we peened the inner surface of the dissimilar metal welding, which is of nickel base alloy, joining a safe end and a low alloy metal nozzle. In this paper, the development and the actual application of the laser peening system for PWR power plants will be described.
This research was conducted to test the feasibility of utilizing high-pressure water jets of over 1.0㎫ as a means of breaking and peeling garlic bulbs. High-pressure plunger pumps and flat-spray nozzles of varying orifice diameters and spray angles were utilized to supply water jets into a prototype peeling chamber made of transparent acrylic plates. Water jets were discharged from a total of six nozzles installed in such a way that three parallel nozzles face the other three. The cross-sectional area of the peeling chamber and the installation angle of the nozzles had critical effects on peeling performance. Small cross-sectional area was required so that total impact force of water jets on garlic could be increased. The optimum installation angles were around 4, 8, and 16$^{\circ}$ for the nozzles having 15, 40, and 65$^{\circ}$ spray angles, respectively. Best performance with 61.4% of completely-peeled garlics was obtained at a pressure of 1.94㎫ and a flow rate of 9.07 $\ell$/min for each nozzle. The peeling efficiency of the system was generally unsatisfactory due to the limited flow rate of the plunger pumps utilized. For better performance, it is recommended to increase flow rate while reducing operating pressure by utilizing other type of pumps.

To prevent the ozonosphere from being destroyed by Halon, it is an urgent task to find out Halon replacement. As one of the replacements water mist have showed broad applications by its advantages: little pollution to environment (not destroying the ozone layer or bring green house effect), extinguishing fire quickly, consuming a small quantity of water and having little damage to the protected objects. The methods of generating water mist strongly influence fire suppression effectiveness, which determine the cone angle, drop size distribution, flux uniformity, and momentum of the generating spray. The traditional water mist nozzle included pressure jet nozzles, impingement nozzles and twin-fluid nozzles. All of them have more or less disadvantages for fire suppression. Therefore, many research institutes and corporations are taking up with innovations in mist generation. This article provided some recent studies in State Key Laboratory of Fire Science (SKLFS) of University of Science and Technology of China. SKLFS have investigated new methods of generating water mist (i.e. effervescent atomization and ultrasonic atomization). and self developed a series of nozzles and developed advanced DPIVS (Digital Particle Image Velocimetry and Sizing) technique. Characteristics of water mist (the distribution of droplet sizes, flux density, spray dynamics and cone angle) produced by these nozzles were measured under different conditions (work pressure, nozzle geometry, etc.) using LDV/APV and DPTVS systems. A series of experiments were performed to study the fire suppression effectiveness in different fire scenario (different kindsof the fuel, fire size and ventilation conditions). The fire extinguishing mechanisms of water mist was also discussed.
Numerical simulation has been performed to investigate the mist flow characteristics through the fire suppression nozzles for the design purposes. The commercial softwares, FLUENT and the fire dynamic simulator, FDS with the proper modelings were chosen as the numerical tools. In order to find optimal conditions in sense of the main performances of nozzles, the spray characteristics were analyzed both inside and outside of the nozzles. Geometric factors of the injecting orifices, i.e., diameter and chamfered angle were chosen as the simulation parameters for design application. From the present numerical results, 1.0c nozzles, whose orifice-diameter was 1 mm, having the chamfered angles were shown as the best performance of the fire suppression.

A systematic experimental study is carried out for the fire fighting monitor nozzle of 65A diameter to design and manufacture a new nozzle with better water spray performance than available domestic nozzles. The nozzle inlet pressure, flow rate and reach for the discharged water from the nozzle are measured by utilizing the experimental facility consisting of two pumps and piping system with a flow meter and pressure gauges. It was found that the baffle position and baffle head chamfering were the most sensitive design factors to be remarkably changed in the flow rate of the discharged water. Also, It was confirmed that the baffle position and the water exit area had the significant effect on the change in reach distance. The results obtained from this study are expected to be used effectively to design new nozzles with excellent spray performances and also to validate numerical analysis results for evaluating the water spray performance of fire fighting monitor nozzles.
Since accommodation, public space and service areas where people stay for all day occupy about 70% of a huge cruise ship, they have to be protected from the fire. International Maritime Organization has resolved that a water mist system should be equipped in this cruise ship according to SOLAS II-2 Reg. 10.6 and FSS code Ch. 7. The water mist system consists of mist nozzles, pressure vessels, section valves and pump unit etc. In particular, the water mist nozzles should be recognized by fire tests in accordance with IMO Res. MSC 265(84). In this study, the fire tests for cabin, corridor, public space and storage area have been conducted to develop the water mist nozzles appropriate to the regulation. Totally 5 types of nozzles were developed and have satisfied the whole performance requirements.
This study suggests the water curtain nozzles as the way to protect important wooden cultural properties from an adjacent building fire or a forest fire. They are designed to block off the pyrolysis of timbers which occurs at $200{\sim}250^{\circ}C$ by forming a water curtain with the flow of water that spouts over a certain pressure from the bottom. The existing water curtain nozzles installed at the following sites were examined: NakSan-sa (Temple) in Gangwon-do (Province) and in Muwisa (Temple) in Jeollanam-do (South Province). As a way to improve and complement the system, this study designed nozzles with covers in order not to disrupt the landscape. Connected pipes are elevated and jet water when they are in use. Possible ways to install the connected elevating pipes to jet water effectively were investigated.

BMI nozzles in bottom head of the nuclear vessel are one of major components in nuclear power plants. The BMI nozzles have high possibility to generate PWSCC(primary water stress corrosion crack) according to recent foreign case although operation temperature is lower then the upper head of the nuclear vessel. Thus, nondestructive inspection of the BMI nozzles is required. But, inspection of BMI nozzles is not easy since the BMI nozzles placed in high radiated area and inside the nozzles filled with boric acid. Thus, in this study, a TOFD transducer for inspection of BMI and automated scanner system with water were developed. Also, validation of performance of the developed transducer and system are performed using specimens with artificial defects.

Large scale fire tests were conducted to develop water mist nozzles as a component of fixed water- based fire fighting systems for Ro-Ro spaces and special category spaces. Fire scenarios for this system consist of two cases which are for cargo fire in a simulated truck and for passenger vehicle fire, and each case has 3 different tests according to the position between fixed water mist nozzles and fire source. Every experiment proceeded for 30 minutes and acceptance criteria were based on gas temperature, fuel package's damage and ignition of targets. This study primarily dealt with the experimental results of cargo fire and focused on fire suppression capability in accordance with discharge pressure, flow rate and flow characteristics like swirl and penetration of the developed water mist nozzles. It appeared that low pressure water mist nozzles with about 40 L/min were able to control fire occurred in Ro-Ro spaces.
Cavitation phenomenon has long been a difficult problem that regarded as negative event to fluid machines or industrial facilities. In the latest, however, some engineers became to understand the power of cavitation and use it to cleaning wall after developing cavitation nozzle. In this paper, we introduce new concept for power-generation system using cavitation jet flow maid by nozzle and impulse turbine in vacuum condition. The vacuum needed to make cavitation is generated naturally by Torricelli's vacuum, 10.23m effective head drop without additional power. We analyzed water's boiling and the steam's mean free path according to vacuum purity levels for nozzles and turbine blades. The nozzles make water accelerate in the neck and boil in expansion section of the nozzles. The shape of the impulse turbine is designed for absorption of the molecule's kinetic energy of the steam.
