BACKGROUND: The coexisting shorebirds often use various foraging strategies, including feeding methods and habitat use, which are the likely mechanisms to explain the variation of morphological and behavior traits. We studied the foraging behaviors of four shorebirds to define how species separate according to habitat structures in rice fields of western-central Korea during their northward migration. METHODS AND RESULTS: The studied species were Long-toed Stints (Calidris subminuta), Wood Sandpipers (Tringa glareola), Common Greenshanks (Tringa nebularia), and Black-tailed Godwits (Limosa limosa), which were commonly observed in rice fields and represented by a wide range of morphological traits. Habitats were categorized into three types ("plowed with water", "shallow water level after harrowing", and "deep water level after harrowing") according to the irrigation intensity and soil manipulation of the farming practices. Long-toed Stints mainly foraged in the "plowed with water", where they used both visual and tactile searching methods. Wood Sandpipers and Common Greenshanks were frequently observed in "shallow water level after harrowing" They spent a considerable amount of time using a visual searching method. Black-tailed Godwits were selectively attracted to "deep water level after harrowing" and used tactile cues as their predominant feeding technique. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates that the water levels related in soil manipulation and irrigation intensity influence the accessibility to foraging sites and the detectability of prey for shorebirds species.

It is very difficult to control the expansion of reed at a wetland ecological park due to their aggressive reproduction capability. Therefore, proper topography and wetland hydrology should be provided before the construction of a wetland ecological park. Appropriate measures should be taken at the initial stages to prevent reed expansion. Field experiments were conducted at the newly constructed wetland ecological park for 15 months to develop methods to control the reproduction and expansion of Phragmites communis. A complete shading method had the best effect on the prevention of reed reoccurrence among other methods. Complete removal of the rhizomes controlled the reed growth to a greater extent than cutting the aboveground shoots. Water-level manipulation was also better than a half-shading method for the prevention of reed reproduction. These results indicated that soil properties and edge effects can influence the reed growth. Cutting only the aboveground shoots facilitates the growth of reed. These results suggest that reed control should be implemented repeatedly and an alteration in the wetland topography and hydrology may be more effective in the long term. Combination of treatments such as water-level management with shading should be considered to control the growth of reed. Adoptive management for created or restored ecosystem might be considered for accomplishment of its original purpose.

The performance of concrete mainly depend upon its water-cement ratio. If water percentage is excess in concrete, it may cause the degradation of performance. Because of these reasons, the change of water content is managed by using various evaluation method of unit water content. And criterion for the change of water content is regulated and used. However the criterion is set only considering production error and measurement error but criterion does not consider performance degradation of concrete. Therefore this study tries to investigate degradation of performance while adding extra water by artificial manipulation or management error in concrete, The contents of extra water for tests are set as 0, 20, 40, 60kg/m3, to examine the performance degradation of concrete, strength, shrinkage, cracks, carbonation are tested This study conclude that, when extra water content is excess than 20kg/m3 in concrete, then performance level of concrete declined rapidly. 80 it is very important to maintain quality of concrete for its better performance.
During the last several years, the geographic information system(GIS) technology has emerged as a very effective tool for analyzing complicated groundwater system Linking GIS to spatially distributed hydrogeological data and groundwater models offers many advantages in the analysis of urban groundwater system. This paper describes the urban hydrogeological application of GIS in Seoul area. This study constructs an urban hydrogeological database via pre- and post-processing of various types of urban hydrogeological data, such as groundwater-level fluctuation, topogaphic data, water chemistry data, subway pimping station data, tidal effect of the Han River, and hydrogeological parameters. A hydrogeological model has been designed to enable importing data from the database and providing the model output for the repetitive manipulation and display in GIS.

With the great advances in process understanding, sensor and instrumentation technology and modelling capability it is important to ask what if any practical benefits can the lake manager and operator look forward to. Here, we examine some of the more important problems facing operators of drinking reservoirs, hydro-lakes and lakes used predominantly for recreation and the environment. In drinking reservoirs the main problems originate from increased loadings of nutrients leading to increased biomass and biomass that may give rise to toxins, of anthropogenic chemicals such as metals and synthetic organics and of pathogens of different types. Hydro-lakes are predominantly plagued by problems arising from low oxygen levels in the hypolimnion and in recreational and environmentally sensitive lakes the biggest challenge for the operator is to maintain an existing or establish a new trophic hierarchy or protect the water body from foreign species. The control variables that are at an operator's disposal are the choice of lake water level, the modification of the water colunm stratification via a de-stratification system, the modification of the lake flow path with flow intervention. curtains, intervention in the catchments to modify the loadings flowing into a lake, manipulation of the trophic chain with introduction of new species and chemical dosing, the latter being of marginal use in a large lake. Each of these options is cost effective under certain-circumstances. We endeavour to provide a users guide for their application and show how, especially new instrumentation and modelling methodologies may be used to achieve an effective intervention.
Two experiments were conducted to examine the effect of graded levels of dietary chromium and leucine, and different fat sources on performance and body composition of broiler chickens. The results showed that chromium picolinate at 0.5 ppm significantly (p<0.05) lowered the carcass fat level. Gut weight and carcass water content were increased as a result of chromium treatment. Body weight, plucked weight, carcass weight, abdominal fat pad weight, breast yield and feed efficiency were unaffected by chromium treatment. Leucine did not interact with chromium to effect lean growth. Dietary leucine above the recommended maintenance level (1.2% of diet) markedly (p<0.001) reduced the breast muscle yield. The addition of fish oil to broiler diets reduced (p<0.05) the abdominal fat pad weights compared to birds on linseed diets. Fish oil is believed to improve lean growth through the effects of long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids in lowering the very low-density lipoprotein levels and triglyceride in the blood, in the meantime increasing glucose uptake into the muscle tissue in blood and by minimizing the negative impact of the immune system on protein breakdown. The amount of fat in the diet (2% or 4%) did not affect body composition.
Preheating conditions (low-, medium-, and high heat-) did not significantly affect the buffering capacity (BC) of skim milk powder (SMP), whereas the level of demineralization significantly affected the BC of whey powders (WP). Heat treatment ($85^{\circ}C$ for 30 min) of both SMP and WP (90% demineralized) mixtures (88:12, 76:24, 64:36 and 52:48; SMP:WP) resulted in a reduced BC, and the extent of this reduction increased with the proportion of WP increased in the samples. High-buffering milk prepared by the addition of phosphate salts (40 mM $NaH_2PO_4$ and 60 mM $Na_2HPO_4$) delayed the rate of pH decline during yoghurt fermentation. The high-buffering yoghurt showed a significantly higher water holding capacity (WHC) than that of control yoghurt (p<0.05), as well as a more uniform and interconnected microstructure with small pore sizes than those of control yoghurt. No significant differences were found between high-buffering and control yoghurt regarding the viable bacterial counts of starter. The manipulation BC can potentially improve the quality characteristics of yoghurts, such as WHC and texture.
In contrast to conventional microwaves, QRD (Quadratic Residue Diffusor) microwaves are a new energy-efficient technology that enhances the effect of sterilization based on changing the wavelength phase difference. Therefore, this study investigated the sterilization of wood using environmentally friendly and low energy consuming QRD microwaves. The results are as follows: for the QRD microwaves used in this study, the efficiency E = 5.75e0.32 S ($R^2$=0.908). Although the early water content was not constant, the average water content was 30.3% and after one week of natural drying, the water content was 22.6%, representing an average water content reduction of about 8%. When increasing the microwave level from 3 kW ~ 9 kW, the time taken for the temperature to increase was reduced. After the QRD microwave treatment, the wood samples showed no change in their flexural rigidity, compressive strength, or cleavage. The QRD microwave levels used in the experiments were 3, 5, 7, and 9 kW, where 9 kW was found to be the most efficient. Thus, for the purpose of eliminating nematodes and termites inside wood, a higher QRD microwave level was found to be more effective and energy efficient.
Global climatic changes are expected to influence various biogeochemical processes in wetland ecosystems. In particular, coastal mud flat is anticipated to be affected directly by temperature increase as well as indirectly by a sea level rise and changes in precipitation. This study aimed to determine changes in methane production under different temperature and salinity by employing a laboratory-scale manipulation experiment. Soil samples were collected from a mud flat in Dong-Gum Kang-Hwa island in winter and two types of experiments were conducted. In the first experiment soil samples at 0-5 cm, 5-10 cm depth were incubated under same salinity with pore water and diluted salinity to 50 % of natural condition for 20 days and methane production was measured every other days. In the second experiment, soil samples at 5-10 cm depth were incubated in different temperature, $5^{\circ}C$ and $15^{\circ}C$, under same salinity conditions with first experiment for 31 days and methane production was measured. Results of the first experiment revealed that higher amount of methane was produced at 5-10 cm depth, and salinity effect was predominant at the end of the experiment. The second experiment showed that methane production was higher in $15^{\circ}C$ than $5^{\circ}C$. In addition, methane production was higher when sea water diluted to 50 % compared to control. These results suggest that methane production is highly influenced by changes in temperature and salinity in coastal mud flat. And that global climatic change may induce biological feedback by affecting production of another greenhouse gas, namely methane from coastal mud flat.
This study was carried out to elucidate the development of unprecedented water-bloom caused by a single species of colonial green algae Eudorina elegans in the upstream area of the Seungchon weir located in the Yeongsan River from late April to May 2013. The Yeongsan River is typically regulated system and the waterbody is seriously enriched by both external and internal sources of nutrients. Seasonal algal outbreaks were highly probable due to various potential factors, such as the excessive nutrients contained in treated wastewater, slow current, high irradiation and temperature, in diatom (winter), green algae (spring) and bluegreen algae (summer). Spring green-tide was attributed to E. elegans with level up to $1,000mg\;m^{-3}$(>$50{\times}10^4cells\;mL^{-1}$). The bloom was exploded in the initial period of the algal development and after then gradually diminished with transporting to the downstream by the intermittent rainfall, resulting in rapid expansion of the distribution range. Although the pulsed-flows by the weir manipulation was applied to control algal bloom, they were not the countermeasures to solve the underlying problem, but rather there still was a remaining problem related to the impact of pulsed-flows on the downstream. The green-tide of E. elegans in this particular region of the Yeongsan River revealed the blooming characteristics of a colonial motile microalga, and fate of vanishing away by the succeeding episodic events of mesoscale rainfall. We believe that the results of the present study contribute to limno-ecological understanding of the green-tide caused by blue-green algae in the four major rivers, Korea.
