  • Water plays the fundamental role in sustaining the living system. Water scarcity is mostly experienced dramatically by people living in poverty, most of them in rural areas and often in the poorest countries. Burundi has been identified as one of those countries. This study aimed to analyze and estimate the current and future water demands in the seven communes surrounding Kibira National Park (KNP) in Burundi. Sectors such as households, livestock, agricultural production and industry as the key water users in the study area were considered. The results showed an alarming increase in future water demand. Water demand by food crops increased to $288,779,060m^3/yr$ in 2020 and $306,018,348m^3/yr$ in 2050. Agricultural sector will be demanding the major available water in the seven communes surrounding Kibira National Park except Muruta and Bukeye which showed that water demand for tea industry was the highest in 2050. The water resources could be the greatest challenges for the overall development of the communities surrounding Kibira National Park. The current water resources may not be enough and therefore may not be able to meet the needs of those seven communities around KNP.

  • Today's paper industry tries to use greater amount of high yield pulp and recycled fiber and to close mill water system, which results in higher fines content and buildup of organic and inorganic contaminants in white water system. Researches are being focused to develop chemical additives that provide good retention and drainage in a closed papermaking system. A microparticle retention system consisted of cationic guar gum and anionic colloidal silica so has been developed to meet the requirements for improving machine speed and product quality. The objective of this investigation was to determine the effects of the degree of cationic guar gums, charge density and structure of anionic colloidal silica sols, and the degree of system closure on the performances of this microparticle retention system. Cationic guar gums and anionic colloidal silica sols with higher charge densities showed better retention performance. Particularly, wider maximum in retention was obtained when structure colloidal silica was used suggesting as mechanism of microparticle bridging is functioning in this system.

  • Liquid filling machines are frequently used in packaging fields; however, there exists a problem in precisely measuring the quantity of the liquid. In the case where the liquid filling machine is not properly metered, there may be issues, such as the fluid exceeding the capacity or chemicals being exposed outside. In this paper, we propose a smart injection nozzle device that can solve the issues stated above. The proposed smart injection nozzle can raise the nozzle according to the water level to remove bubbles and inject the accurate amount of fluid. In addition, the efficiency of the logistics process is enhanced by the smart QR code. Through experiments using the developed smart injection nozzle device, we have noticed that the accuracy of injection capacity, nozzle position, reaction time and building data exceeded the target value. Therefore, it expected that this machine will give more production and save a lot of manpower for packaging industry.

  • The feeding habits of juvenile Chaenogobius annularis were examined based on gut content analysis of 281 individuals, collected from May to June 2011 in the coastal water of Geoje, Korea. Copepods were the main source of food for C. annularis, which constituted 61.6% in IRI. Barnacle larvae was the second largest dietary component. Graphical analysis of the diet composition showed that C. annularis was a specialized predator characterized by strong individual feeding specialization. Both small and large size class of C. annularis mainly consumed harpacticoida and cirripedia cypris.

  • The implementation of subsea separation and liquid boosting is becoming a common development scheme for the exploration of deep water fields. Subsea separation is an attractive and economic solution to develop deep offshore fields producing fluid without hydrate or wax. A subsea separator can avoid or simplifying costly surface platforms of floating vessels, as well as being an efficient tool to enhance hydrocarbon production. Subsea separation system should be reliable to ensure successful operation in a wide range of 3-phase flow regime. In this study, multiphase flow characteristics inside in-line type subsea separation system are investigated for the design of subsea separation system.

  • The use of fluorescent whitening agents (FWAs) increases as the demand for the whiter and brighter printing papers increases. FWAs are used as internal and surface treatment chemicals. FWAs that are not used properly in the papermaking process, however, remain in the process water and may demage the paper quality and processes. In this study, a new idea to eliminate FWAs from the process water, consisted of the floc formation of FWAs with cationic chemicals, such as cationic polyelectrolytes and alum, and the removal of the floc by screening or sedimentation, was proposed. Flocculation of FWAs, that is the first step to remove FWAs from the process water, was investigated using turbidity and particle size measurement. Relationship between turbidity and particle size showed that the turbidity could reflect the particle size change of FWA flocs and was proper for the evaluation of flocculation phenomena. Poly-DADMAC was more efficient than PEI to induce the flocculation of FWAs. Alum was effective chemical for the flocculation and sedimentation of FWAs.

  • There are accumulations of remained chemical additives and contaminants in the process water of semi-closed linerboard mill. High temperature of the process water aggravates the anaerobic digestion of contaminated process water and causes the generation of hazardous gases, which are from the biological reaction of varied additives and contaminants. The hydrogen sulfide in the gases easily combine with moisture in the air, and become sulfuric acid, which causes corrosion of paper machinery. This hydrogen sulfide is from the reduction of sulfate ions in the process water, and the sulfate ions are mostly from the alum. We changed the alum to PAC (Poly Aluminum Chloride). The results were preventing generation of hydrogen sulfide, and equivalent sizing effect by the use of PAC.

  • In order to improve the bonding efficiency of starch adhesives and water resistance of corrugated board, mixing ratio of additives dosage was changed and its effects were analyzed. When the additives dosage was increased, bonding strength, vertical compression strength, bursting strength and water resistance were increased, because of hydroxyl groups or acetyl groups in starch adhesives and cellulose fibers of corrugated board were cross-linked by additives. When 1.0% glyoxal dosage was added, flat crush strength and vertical compression strength were increased. With 1.5% glyoxal, bonding strength and bursting strength were increased. However, 2.0% glyoxal dosage was added, most of strength except bursting strength were decreased. Thus, when the appropriate amount of additives are added during corrugated board production process, increased bonding efficiency of starch adhesives and higher water resistance of corrugated board can be achieved.

  • This study was carried out to develop a new application field of traditional Hanji and obtain the basic data for producing functional Hanji using sawdust ceramics and rice-husk ceramics as an architectural material. The results measuring water vapor permeance and water vapor absorption for using window materials and wallpapers are as follows. Hanji wallpaper has good things in controlling indoor space comfortably. Particularly, ability of controlling humidity of Hanji wallpaper affects indoor space comfort and human health. In the case indoor humidity is higher than outdoor humidity, according to the addition of ceramics, Hanji wallpapers maintain the humidity by retaining water vapor molecules in the pores of ceramics. Thus the Hanji wallpapers with ceramics, in particular rice-husk ceramics, make it superior to non-ceramics Hanji wallpapers in maintaining the humidity indoors.

  • In this study a process simulation method was used to analyze the accumulation phenomena of anionic starch in the process white water as the closure level of a fine paper making process is increased. A pilot paper machine was used as a model process. Dynamic simulations of the influence of white water usage ratio and uncoated broke addition ratio on the variation of process variable was monitored as a function of time. Results from the dynamic simulations showed that the volume of reservoirs affected the dynamic behavior of the process. The dynamic behavior of flow rate and dissolved starch concentration in process units were different from each other. The speed of the change of dissolved starch concentration in process units was depend on the starting point of the change of dissolved starch concentration, the length of circulation loop, and the volume of reservoirs.
