Several factors, including peak dp/dt of the ventricular pressure and maximum closing velocity of leaflet have been studied as indices of the cavitation threshold. In the present study, just before closing velocity of the leaflet has been studied as indices of the cavitation threshold, and cavitation erosion on the surface of a mechanical valve was examined by focusing on squeeze flow and the water hammer phenomenon during the closing period of the valve. A simple solenoid-actuated test device that can directly control the valve closing velocity was developed, and opening-closing tests of 3,000 and 40,000 cycles were performed at various closing velocities. There was a closing velocity threshold to occur erosion pitting of valve surface, and its value was about 0.4 m/s in this study. Cavitation-induced erosion pits were observed only in regions where squeeze flow occurred immediately before valve closure On the other hand, the number of the pits was found to be closely related to an area of water hammer-induced pressure wave below the critical pressure defined by water vapor pressure. Therefore, it was concluded that cavitation is initiated and augmented by the two pressure drops due to squeeze flow and water hammer phenomenon, respectively.
It has been known that torrential rainfall events have been occurring worldwide due to climate change. The accelerated soil erosion has caused negative impacts on water quality and ecosystem of receiving waterbodies. Since soil security issues have been arising in various areas of the world, intensive interests have been given to topsoil management in Korea. Thus in this study, Web GIS-based computing system of physical, chemical, and biological topsoil quality indices were developed. In this study, five soil quality maps at national scale and top soil erosion potential were prepared for evaluation of soil quality based on soil erosion potential. For this system, the open source Web GIS engine, OpenGeo, was used as core engine of the system. With this system, decision makers or related personnel in areas of soil erosion Best Management Practices (BMPs) would be able to find the most appropriate soil erosion BMPs based on soil erosion potential and soil quality at the area of interest. The Web GIS system would be efficiently used in decision making processes because of ease-of-use interface and scientific data used in this system. This Web GIS system would be efficiently used because this system could provide scientific knowledge to decision makers or stakeholders. Currently various BMP database are being built to be used as a decision support system in topsoil management and topsoil quality areas.
Soil erosion is a natural process and has been occurring in most areas in the watershed. However, accelerated soil erosion rates have been causing numerous environmental impacts in recent years. To reduce soil erosion and sediment inflow into the water bodies, site-specific soil erosion best management practices(BMPs) need to be established and implemented. The most commonly used soil erosion model is the Universal Soil Loss Equation(USLE), which have been used in many countries over 30 years. The Sediment Assessment Tool for Effective Erosion Control(SATEEC) ArcView GIS system has been developed and enhanced to estimate the soil erosion and sediment yield trom the watershed using the USLE input data. In the last decade, the Soil and Water Assessment Tool(SWAT) model also has been widely used to estimate soil erosion and sediment yield at a watershed scale. The SATEEC system estimates the LS factor using the equation suggested by Moore and Burch, while the SWAT model estimates the LS factor based on the relationship between sub watershed average slope and slope length. Thus the SATEEC and SWAT estimated soil erosion values were compared in this study. The differences in LS factor estimation methods in the SATEEC and SWAT caused significant difference in estimated soil erosion. In this study, the difference was -51.9%(default threshold)${\sim}-54.5%$(min. threshold) between SATEEC and non-patched SWAT, and -7.8%(default threshold)${\sim}+3.8%$(min. threshold) between SATEEC and patched SWAT estimated soil erosion.
The project concentrates on an hydrological analysis. The analysis consists of rainfall, infiltration, Determination of runoff and sediment yield. The risque of erosion and the control measures are related to the slopes and land use. Therefore the first approach to erosion must be correct land use based on land classification. Basically there are two types of mechanical protection works; Drainage and Storage. Realization of a drainage system will be very costly and therefore temporary storage is preferred. For farmland in flat areas hardly any measures are needed. For farmland on slopes temporary storage can be effected by applying tillage with ridges within contour bunds. Along roads infiltration pits should be constructed and in areas with houses, the solution to avoid runoff will be water harvesting.
Landslide dam failure presents as a severe natural disaster due to its adverse impact to people and property. If the landslide dams failed, the discharge of a huge volume of both water and sediment could result in a catastrophic flood in the downstream area. In most of previous studies, breaching process used to be considered as a constructed dam, rather than as a landslide dam. Their erosion rate was assumed to relate to discharge by a sediment transport equation. However, during surface erosion of landslide dam, the sediment transportation regime is greatly dependent on the slope surface and the sediment concentration in the flow. This study aims to accurately simulate the outflow hydrograph caused by landslide dam by overtopping through a 2D surface flow erosion/deposition model. The lateral erosion velocity in this model was presented as a function of the shear stress on the side wall. The simulated results were then compared and it was coherent with the results obtained from the experiments.
Recently, coastal erosion has been widely in progress and the erosion level becomes also serious in the world wide, espeically in East Sea in Korea. Since it would threaten the life, economics and security risk, it is necessary to much comprehend the reason why coastal erosion has occurred according to the geographical characteristics. Meanwhile, analysis about hydrodynamics of the solitary wave such as tunami in swash zone is needed for the best management practice of coastal erosion. Solitary wave is nonlinear wave and can be reproduced in the laboratoy scale by openning suddenly a sluice gate with water head difference, of which methodology was found in the literature, since it could be simply determined by a significant wave height. Thus, in this sutdy the generation of solitary wave was experimentalized using the sluice gate. Experimental conditions were classified by angles of a beach slope, a water level in a beach slope and a difference of water level between in a headtank and a channel bed. Two kinds of dimensionless analyses based from experimental results in this study were presented; the first analysis indicates nondimensionalization between the wave height and the water level in a beach slope in order to investigate characteristics of solitary wave approaching the beach. The second shows the other nondimensionalization between dynamic pressure and static pressure on a beach slope to investigate the relationship between wave breaking and wave pressure. Under the same conditions as laboratory experiments, the numerical results computed with a SWAN model embedded in FLOW 3D were compared in terms of wave height, and pressure on the beach slope, which shows good agreement with each other. Overall results from this study could provide fundamental hydraulic data for the reliabile verification of numerical simulation results about coastal erosion in swash zone caused by solitary waves.
In this study, area-weighted slope and slope length module, considering measured field slope and slope length of the agricultural fields within the subwatershed, was developed using the ArcView Avenue programming to reflect the field topography of the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) HRU in simulating the hydrology and water quality. Flow and sediment yield estimated values of the SWAT were compared with and without applying area-weighted slope and slope length module, developed in this study. There was 103% increases in estimated sediment with area-weighted slope and slope length module for the study watershed. The soil erosion and sediment yield from only agricultural field in Hae-an watershed was also assessed. There are 111% increase in estimated soil erosion and 112% increase in estimated sediment by applying area-weighted slope and slope length module. This study shows that the area-weighted slope and slope length module needs to be utilized in estimating the HRU field slope and slope length for accurate estimation of soil erosion and nonponit source pollutant modeling with the SWAT although it is not feasible to measure topographic information for every agricultural fields within the watershed. The area-weighted slope and slope length module can be used in identifying soil erosion hot spot areas for developing cost effective and efficient soil erosion management practices.
