Two measurement techniques of droplet sizing, an imaging technique(PMAS) and a phase-Doppler measurement technique (PDPA), have been compared using a water spray from a pressurized-type swirl nozzle. The result showed that SMD measured by PDPA was larger than that measured by PMAS by about 40 %. Such discrepancy of SMD could be explained by the fact that the light signal intensity used by PDPA can be biased towards larger particles. On the other hand there could be lower opportunity to capture the images of the large particles with PMAS, since the large particles could be out of sight due to their high speed.

The MIM industry is currently focusing on parts that are used in automobiles and medical instruments. Many of the parts in these categories are very small and often not easy to machine because of its complex geometry. Therefore MIM is well suited for the production of these parts. We tested the sinterability of SUS316L ultra fine powders (3,4, 6, 8micron) produced by ATMIX high-pressure water-atomization, and it showed excellent results. A density of 97% theoretical was obtained by sintering at 1373K when using the ultra fine powder (3micron). Specifically, the finer the powder size, higher was the sintered density. The surface roughness and accuracy are also greatly improved with ATMIX ultra fine powder.
This paper describes the improvement of engine cooling system. To improve engine cooling performance, the authors approached in two ways. One is to increase water pump performance, changing of impeller shape and lightening of material were carried out. The second one is cooling efficiency rise, which were investigated with head gasket coolant flow passage optimization with flow visualization technique. The test results show that water pump performance was increased effectively, reduction of pump drive torque, and increase of pump flow-rate and pressure rise. Gasket hole pattern optimization test results represent an optimized head coolant flow which stands cross flow from exhaust to intake port side and small vortex were removed.
The objective of this is to experimentally investigate the effect of mixed jet on the oxygen transfer characteristics with the primary nozzle area ratio of an annular nozzle ejector for the application of a microbial fuel cell. A direct visualization method with a high speed camera system was used to capture the horizontal mixed jet images, and a binarization technique was used to analyze the images. The clean water unsteady state technique was used for the oxygen transfer measurement. The air-water mixed jet discharging into a water tank behaved similar to a buoyancy or horizontal jet with the primary nozzle area ratio. It was found that an optimum primary nozzle area ratio was observed where the oxygen transfer performance reached its maximum value due to the decrease of air volume fraction and the increase of jet length and air bubble dispersion.
A sprinkler is a fire suppression system that extinguishes combustible materials in the early stages of a fire, creating a spray. However, spray formation method of the sprinkler can result in an uneven distribution of water spray on the surface of combustible materials. It is necessary to ensure a consistent water flux density regardless of the spray direction and angle. In this study, the water flux distribution was analyzed for the various types of sprinkler head: circular, flush, pendent, and upright types. All sprinkler heads have a K-factor of 80 LPM/(0.1MPa)0.5. In this study, water collection cubes were used to examine the water flux distribution. The upright type sprinkler head showed a low standard deviation in total sprayed area, indicating a high level of uniformity. The upright type head showed the lowest standard deviation in the radial direction, and also showed the lowest standard deviation in the azimuthal direction. Upright sprinkler head has no obstructing structure along the path of droplets after they are generated. For this reason, upright sprinkler head showed the most uniform water flux distribution on the floor.

An experimental study was carried out to investigate the characteristics of spray pattern such as discharge coefficient, spray angle, and mass distribution for two-fluid airblast swirl injector, within the range of fluid supply pressure 0~13kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$. In general atomization is promoted with increasing total gas mass flow and performance of the splay pattern was more stable when radial mass flow was greater than axial mass flow, radial swirler was better than Axial swirler for atomization. Equivalent spray angle did not change with water mass flow except for the condition of 3kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and showed the same for the gas mass flow. Mass distribution from the patternator shows that maximum value of the distribution were lowered but distributed larger area when gas flow rate increased. Center of mass position did not change with increasing water mass flow.
In the case of heavy duty diesel engines, the Urea-SCR system is currently considered to reduce the NOx emission as a proved technology, and it is widely studied to get the high performance and durability. However, the nozzles to inject the urea-water solution into the exhaust pipe occur some problems, including the nozzle clogging, deposition of urea-water solution on the inner wall of the exhaust pipe, resulting in the production of urea salt. In this study, a swirl-type twin-fluid nozzle to produce more fine droplets was used as a method to solve the problems. The effect of the nozzle cap geometry, including the length to diameter ratio ($l_o/d_o$) and chamfer, on the spray characteristics were investigated experimentally. The length to diameter ratio of nozzle cap were varied from 0.25 to 1.125. The chamfer angle of the nozzle cap was constant at 90o. The mean velocity and droplet size distributions of the spray were measured using a 2-D PDA (phase Doppler analyzer) system, and the spray half-width, AMD (arithmetic mean diameter) and SMD (Sauter mean diameter) were analyzed. At result, The larger length to diameter ratio of nozzle cap were more small SMD and AMD. The effect of the chamfer did increase the radial velocity, while it did not affect the atomization effect.
This study was carried out to settle the plugging problem which occurs frequently when agricultural wettable powder is used in pest control work using the crushing and the dispersing effects caused by irradiation of ultrasonic wave. Sonication was applied to the wettable powder suspension in a beaker for 30 seconds using a 28 kHz, 200 W PZT BLT, and the image of suspension before and after sonication was observed using a microscope and a SEM. The image of tow commercial wettable powder suspensions in water observed using an optics microscope showed that the agglomerated particles were irregularly distributed over the whole observed region when stirred mechanically, while showing more uniform distribution composed of comparatively single particles in the whole observed region after sonication. Concerning the above, the projected areas of particles in the four suspensions after sonication were decreased distinctively in the observed range of the microscope and the atomization of crystals was much developed. Over the measured range of 5.6∼4,157 ${\mu}$m particle size, the overall projected area of particles was decreased to 58.3∼89.6% on the average after sonication. When the SEM images of sonicated wettable powder suspensions dissolved in water and CH$_3$OH were compared to the suspensions before sonication, such phenomena as the atomization of particles, the expansion of voids between particles, the reduction and the decrease of agglomerated particle groups, and the progress of crack developments on the surface of flake-shaped particles were observed. It seemed possible that the plugging problem that occurs frequently in pest control machine when using wettable powder would be settled by the use of sonication.
This paper experimentally reports the effect of suspension stability on the thermal conductivity of water-based Au nanofluids. For this purpose, the water-based Au nanofluids are prepared by the one-step method called electro-chemical method with volume fraction of 0.0005%. The thermal conductivity of water-based Au nanofluids is measured from $22^{\circ}C$ to $42^{\circ}C$ using the transient hot wire method. To quantify the suspension stability of Au nanofluids, the suspension stability of nanofluids is evaluated using the in-house developed laser scattering system at a fixed wavelength of 632.8nm with the elapsed time. Based on the experimental results, the both thermal conductivity and suspension stability of water-based Au nanofluids are gradually decreased according to the time. These results experimentally show that the suspension stability of water-based Au nanofluids is the one of the important factor of thermal conductivity.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the volume fraction of water and injection pressure on the spray characteristics of water/oil emulsified fuel injected from the pressure swirl atomizer. The mixture of light oil and water by using impeller mixer was performed. The spray characteristics such as SMD and velocity were measured using PDPA. The injection pressures were 7.5, 100, 200 and $300kgt/cm^2$ and volume fractions of water in emulsified fuel were 0, 10, 20 and 30%, respectively. The measurement sections were at 30, 60 and 90mm from injection nozzle tip. SMD and velocity of emulsified fuel were larger gradually by increasing the volume fraction of water in emulsified fuel. The spray angle was decreased and axial velocity was increased with increase in water content. It was found that the relative SMD ratio was increased more greatly than the relative axial velocity ratio in super critical pressure. The relative SMD ratio was increased and the relative axial velocity ratio was decreased with increase injection pressure at spray downstream.
