Waste water-soluble cutting oil was treated with WI type #1 and WI type #2. The properties of the original water-soluble cutting oil were pH=l0.4, viscosity=1.4cP, CODcr=44,750 ppm, and TOC=10,569 ppm. However, the properties of the oil used for more than 3 months were changed to pH=7.82, viscosity=2.1cP, CODcr=151,000 ppm, and TOC=74,556 ppm. It might be attributed to the fact that molecular chains were cut due to thermal oxidation and impurities such as metal chips were incorporated in to the oil during the operation processes. To prevent the putrefaction of oil, the sterilization effect of ozone and UV on the microorganism in the oil was investigated. Ozone treatment showed that 99.99% of the microorganism was annihilated with 30 minutes contact time and 60 minutes were necessary for the same effect when UV was used. Ozone treatment could cut molecular chains of the oil due to strong sterilization power, which was evidenced by the increase of TOC from 25,132 ppm at instantaneous contact to 28,888 ppm at 30 minutes contact time. However, UV treatment didn't show severe changes in TOC values and thus, seemed to cause of severe cut of molecular chains. When the activated carbon was used to treat the waste water-soluble cutting oil, TOC decreased to 25,417 ppm with 0.lg carbon and to 15,946 ppm with 5.0g carbon. This results indicated that the waste oil of small molecular chains could be eliminated by adsorption. From the results, it could be concluded that these treatment techniques could be proposed to remove the waste oil of small molecular chains resulting in the degradation of the oil properties. In addition, these experimental results could be used for the correlation with future works such as investigation of the molecular distribution according to the sizes, lengths, and molecular weight of the chains.

The objective of study was to evaluate the apropriate maturity indices for garbage composting using sawdust as bulking agent. Materials used in this study were the average composition garbage(G20) and garbage conditioned by sawdust(GS30, GS50) and cereals(GSC30). Indices for evaluating maturity were VS, water soluble TOC, polysaccharide, Humification Index(HI), and E4/E6. Experiment results showed that VS reduction was the most desirable index for evaluating compost maturity except for the GS50 which were conditioned with high sawdust Water soluble TOC decreased rapidly during the composting of first one month and then little changed. Therefore, water soluble TOC was recommended as maturity index. Polysaccharide was considered as a maturity index in case of garbage conditioned with sawdust and high cereals. Humification Index(HI) and E4/E6 were available as maturity indices in case of only some garbage composting so additional study was needed to confirm them as maturity indices for all garbage composting. Correlation analysis indicated that indices for evaluating maturity of garbage(about 30 C/N ratio) adding sawdust as bulking agent and high cereals, were VS reduction, water soluble TOC, polysaccharide, and E4/E6.

Continuous Water-Soluble Organic Carbons (WSOC) by the Particle Into Liquid Sampler - Total Organic Carbon (PILS-TOC) analyzer were measured at the Seoul intensive monitoring site from June 17 through July 5 in 2014. In addition, the 24 hour integrated PM2.5 collected by Teflon and Quartz filters were analyzed for water soluble ions by Ion chromatography (IC), WSOC by TOC from water extracts, organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC) by carbon analyzer using the thermal optical transmittance (TOT) method, and mass fragment ions (m/z) related to alkanes and PAHs (Poly Aromatic Hydrocarbons) by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometer-Thermal Desorption (GC/MS-TD). Based on the statistical analysis, four different Carbonaceous Thermal Distributions (CTDs) from OCEC thermal-gram were identified. This study discusses the primary and secondary sources of WSOC based on the Classified CTD, organic mass fragments, and diurnal patterns of WSOC. The results provide knowledge regarding the origins of WSOC and their behaviors.

Real-time and quantitative measurement of the chemical composition in ambient aerosols represents one of the most challenging problems in the field of atmospheric chemistry. In the present study, time resolved application by Aerosol-into-Mist System (AIMS) following by total organic carbon analyzer (TOC) has been developed. The unique aspect of the combination of these two techniques is to provide quantifiable water soluble organic carbon (WSOC) information of particle-phase organic compounds on timescales of minutes. We also demonstrated that the application of the AIMS method is not limited to water-soluble organic carbon but inorganic ion compounds. By correlating the volume concentrations by optical particle sizer (OPS), water soluble organic carbon can be highly related to the secondary organic products. AIMS-TOC method can be potentially applied to probe the formation and evolution mechanism of a variety of SOA behaviors in ambient air.

Under Korea's Enforcement Decree of the Framework Act on Environmental Policy amended in 2013, total organic carbon (TOC) is newly added as water quality parameter to assess organic pollution in water and aquatic ecosystem. To meet the TOC requirement and improve quality of effluent discharged into public watershed, it is also necessary to develop standards for TOC in effluent from public sewage treatment works (PSTWs). In this study, we reviewed the characteristics and removal efficiency of TOC in influent and effluent of PSTWs. The study found that phosphorus treatment process removed not only soluble phosphorus but also a portion of TOC remaining after the secondary treatment process. TOC concentration in effluent from PSTWs operated in tandem with industrial wastewater treatment work was higher due to influx of insoluble substances from the industrial wastewater treatment work. In order to lay a foundation for the management of TOC from PSTWs, it is necessary to carry out research on TOC from different perspectives. For example, studies on the generation mechanism of TOC and the impact of TOC on drinking water resources, assessment of effluent qualities through monitoring, and development of measures to control TOC for the preservation of aquatic ecosystem are needed.
The recycled washwater, which has different water quality and is produced about 5 to 20% of the total water volume treated, affects the unit operation of water treatment, especially coagulation process. However, the effects of recycled washwater on unit operation of water treatment have not been fully investigated. In this study, effects of recycled washwater on coagulation process were investigated to find the optimum coagulation condition by analyzing turbidity, $UV_{254}$, TOC removal efficiencies. In addition, effects of recycled washwater on residual Al after coagulation were studied by analyzing soluble and particulate Al. The size distribution and fractal dimension of coagulated also analyzed. The recycled washwater was lower pH than the raw water. And the recycled washwater had higher $UV_{254}$, TOC and residual Al concentration than the raw water. Residual Al concentration of recycled washwater was about 50 times higher than that of raw water. Optimum coagulant dosages on the blending recycled washwater and the raw water for turbidity, $UV_{254}$ and Al removal were lower than that on the raw water. However, TOC removal increased by increasing coagulant dosage. The size and fractal dimension of coagulated particle produced in the blending recycled washwater were larger, which imply faster settling velocity, than those produced in the raw water only.

Two identical Particle Into Liquid Samplers-Total Organic Carbon (PILS-TOC) were operated to measure fine particle Water Soluble Organic Carbon (WSOC) for one week on Feb. in 2016. The dual instrument operations provided validated WSOC concentrations to have a continuous WSOC measurement during the sample analysis period. Both PILS-TOC instruments were operated downstream of an carbon denuder to remove positive adsorption artifacts associated with semi-volatile organic compounds. Comparison of WSOC showed good agreement each other. The linear regression had a coefficient of determination ($r^2$) of 0.92 and a regression slope of 1.01 for the first period. The lower collection efficiency due to lower steam temperature is discussed. In addition, the potential primary source related to WSOC based on the comparison of black carbon (BC) concentrations is explained. The results of good agreement between two PILS-TOC measurements can provide the validation of WSOC cooperations and knowledge regarding the origins of WSOC and their behaviors.

Qualititative changes in water extracts during food waste composting were studied in order to identify parameters that can be used as indicaters of compost maturity. Materials used in this study were food wastes, office paper, newspaper and leaves. Three different compositions of food wastes were used : average composition food waste generated in Korea, a high cereal (carbohydrate) content food waste and a high meat (protein) content food waste. Experimental results indicated that parameters which can be used for compost maturity evaluation were water soluble TOC and water soluble $C_{org}/N_{org}$ ratio. In case of water soluble TOC, it is considered as one of the most desirable parameters, since it showed quite distinct decrease pattern than any other parameters. The $C_{org}/N_{org}$ ratio in the water extracts can also be considered as a appropriate index of the compost maturity since this ratio reached a narrow range (5~6) at the end of composting process regardless of initial raw waste compositions. Water soluble TKN was undesirable parameter as a compost maturity index. The ammonia nitrogen content in water extracts varied considerably during composting process, but finally reached a range of 0.067, 0.085% based on dry compost.
In metal cutting, water-soluble cutting oil is used for cooling the surface of the workpiece and improving the surface roughness. However, waste cutting oil contains preservatives and surfactants, and if it is discarded as it is, it has an great influence on environmental pollution. For this reason, regulations on the use of cutting oil are being stricter. Hence, the development of eco-friendly treatment technologies is required. In this study, a diamond electrode doped with boron on a niobium substrate was deposited by thermal filament chemical vapor deposition and waste cutting oil was treated using an electrochemical method. Compared to the total amount of organic carbon contained in the waste cutting oil, it was confirmed that the boron-doped diamonds developed from this study showed much better performance than electrodes that has been widely used before.

This study was performed to investigate the characteristics of compost produced from the composting facility at Nanjido. The capacity of the facility is 10 ton/day. Feed material was food waste generated in Seoul. Moisture content of the compost product was 31% and conductivity was 2.6 mmhos/cm. The compost product met Korean quality standards and EC quality standards for VS and C/N ratio. In case of TOC and TKN, they were met with Japan quality standards. The water soluble-C/N ratio finally reached about 5 based on dry compost. The color of compost product was dark brown. The product had earthy smell. Heavy metal contents of the compost were below Korean quality standards by wet basis.
