Though the upper stream basin area of Gwanpyung-Cheon in Daejeon, Korea is protected as Green Belt Zone, the stream is under constant environmental pressure due to current agricultural practices and infrastructure development in its basin area. To develop appropriate integrated water resources management plan for the stream, it is necessary to consider not only water quality problems but also water quantity aspect. In this study, Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) was calibrated and validated with sets of field measurements to predict for future water flow and water quality conditions for any rainfall event. While flow modeling results showed good agreement by showing correlation coefficient is greater than 0.9, water quality modeling results showed relatively less accurate levels of agreements with correlation coefficient between 0.67 and 0.87. Hypothetical basin development scenarios were developed to compare effect on stream water quality and quantity when Low Impact Development (LID) technologies are applied in the basin. The results of this study can be used effectively in decision making processes of urban development Gwanpyung-Cheon area by comparing basin management alternatives such as LID methods.
A systematic method using an optimal estimation algorithm is presented for simultaneous estimation of diffuse pollution distributed along a stream reach and model parameters for a stream water quality model. It was applied with the QVAL2E model to the South Han River for optimal estimation of kinetic constants and diffuse loads along the river. Initial calibration results for kinetic constants selected from a sensitivity analysis reveal that diffuse source inputs for nitrogen and phosphorus are essential to satisfy the system mass balance. Diffuse loads for total nitrogen and total phosphorus were estimated solving the expanded inverse problem. Comparison of kinetic constants estimated simultaneously with diffuse sources to those estimated without diffuse loads, suggests that diffuse sources must be included in the optimization not only for its own estimation but also for adequate estimation of the model parameters. Application of optimization method to river water quality modeling is discussed in terms of the sensitivity coefficient matrix structure.
The objective of this study was to assess the statistics and associated criteria for field-scale model used to simulate nutrient concentrations in paddy field. CREAMS-PADDY, a modified version of the field-scale CREAMS model, simulates the hydrologic, sediment, and nutrient cycles in paddy fields was applied in this study. The model was calibrated and validated using data from study rice paddy fields in Republic of Korea. The calibration statistics include mean and the minimum-maximum range associated with a "temporal window" that spans a period of several days. Because nutrient concentrations in paddy filed are typically sampled infrequently (on a weekly basis, at best) and represent only an instant in time, it is not reasonable to expect any model to simulate a daily average concentration equal to an observed value on a particular day. The 5-day window and related calibration statistics were applied in this study and the applicability of this concept was tested for field-scale water quality model. As a result of calibration and validation, the ponded water nutrient concentration values showed only small changes except the fertilization period. Because of the small changes in ponded water concentration, the size of 5-day window was too small to capture the observed values. Further study is required to establish the 5-day window calibration method for field-scale water quality modeling.

Providing safe and readily available water is vital to maintain public health. One of the most prevalent methods to prevent the spread of waterborne diseases is applying chlorine injection to the treated water before distribution. During the water transmission and distribution, the chlorine will experience a reduction, which can imply potential risks for human health if it falls below the minimum threshold. The ability to determine the appropriate initial intensity of chlorine at the source would be significant to prevent such problems. This study proposes two methods that integrate hydraulic and water quality modeling to determine the suitable intensity of chlorine to be injected into the source water to maintain the minimum chlorine concentration (e.g., 0.2 mg/l) at each demand node. The water quality modeling employs the first-order decay to estimate the rate of chlorine reduction in the water. The first method utilizes a backtracking algorithm to trace the path of water from the demand node to the source during each time step, which helps to accurately determine the travel time through each pipe and node and facilitate the computation of time-dependent chlorine decay in the water delivery process. However, as a backtracking algorithm is computationally intensive, this study also explores an alternative approach using a water age. This approach estimates the elapsed time of water delivery from the source to the demand node and calculate the time-dependent reduction of chlorine in the water. Finally, this study compares the outcomes of two approaches and determines the suitable and effective method for calculating the chlorine intensity at the source to maintain the minimum chlorine level at demand nodes.

In this study, the accurate water quality analysis in rivers, including the non-point source is performed. First of all, watershed model, SWAT(Soil and Water Assessment Tool) was applied to analyze the impact of the non-point source in study area. And then, water quality analysis integrating the point source and the non-point source is implemented using QUALKO model. For more exact simulation, it should be the calibration and verification of variables and parameters which are needed for simulation. In addition, the importance of considering the non-point source was confirmed in river water quality simulation. BOD, TN, TP were analysed, and the results shows that BOD, TN and TP concentration was increased to 16.8%, 8.2% and 25.8% respectively. The more accurate estimate will be carried if use of reliable measurements and watershed simulation be done in models linking process. The suggested technique will improve the accuracy of the water quality analysis. The methodologies presented in this study will contribute to basin-wide water quantity and quality management.
Currently, the waterfront facility was constructed in New Songdo City, South Korea. It has the various water leisure areas and especially an artificial urban canal with filtered seawater by re-circulating flow system. However, due to excessive amount of nutrients from seawater combined with complicated geometry, it is highly vulnerable to deterioration of water quality. In this study, flow characteristics and pollutant transport were analyzed with comprehensive numerical models, MIKE 3 FM and ECO-lab. Based on these numerical results, notable sampling points were selected for field measurements and comparison between modeling and measured results were conducted. In addition, the integrated water quality evaluation index, Water Quality Index was applied to analyze various water quality issues. We also set up scenarios to control the two kinds of water quality factors, dissolved oxygen (DO), and total phosphorus (TP). As a result, the effect of 20% reduction of TP was less than 10% and it was almost ineffective for a year but it was reduced by up to 40% in case of scenario which DO is increased by 20%. Therefore, it was recommended to control the DO concentration, usually by applying re-aeration facility, rather than TP in artificial urban canal with seawater.
Recently, the population growth, industrial and agricultural development are rapidly undergoing in the Lower Rio Grande Valley (LRGV) in Texas. The Lower Rio Grande Valley (LRGV) composed of the 4 counties and three of them are interesting for Non-point and point source pollutant modeling: Starr, Cameron, and Hidalgo. Especially, the LRGV is an intensively irrigation region, and Texas A&M University Agriculture Program and the New Mexico State University College of Agriculture applied irrigation district program (Guy Fipps and Craig Pope, 1998), projects in GIS and Hydrology based agricultural water management systems and assessment of prioritized protecting stream network, water quality and rehabilitation based on water saving potential in Rio Grande River. In the LRGV region, where point and non-point sources of pollution may be a big concern, because increasing fertilizers and pesticides use and population cause. This project objective seeks to determine the accumulation of non-point and point source and discuss the main impacts of agriculture and environmental concern with water quality related to pesticides, fertilizer, and nutrients within LRGV region. The GIS technique is widely used and developed for the assessment of non-point source pollution in LRGV region. This project shows the losses in kg/$km^2$/year of BOD (Biological Oxygen Demand), TN (total Nitrogen) and TP (total phosphorus) in the runoff from the surface of LRGV.
The propriety of the numerical model application was examined on Paldang resevoir and its inflow tributaries located in the center of the Korean peninsula and the long term water quality forecast of the oxygen profile was carried out in this syduy. The input data of the model was the capacity of the reservoir, catchment area, percolation, diffusion rate, vertical mixing rate, dissolution rate from the bottom of the reservoir, outflow of the resevoir, water quality measurement and meteorology data of the drainage basin, and the output result was the annual estimation value of the dissolved oxygen concentration and the biochemical oxygen demand. The modeling method is based on the measured or calculated boundary condition dividing the water area into several blocks from the macorscopic aspect and considering the mass balance in these blocks. As the result of the water quality forecast, it was expected that the water quality in Northern Han River and Paldang reservoir would maintain the recent level, but that the water quality in the Southern Han River and its inflow tributary would worsen below the grade 4 of the life environmental standard from around 2000 owing to the decrease of DO concentration and the increase of BOD concentration.
A high ammonia nitrogen ($NH_3-N$) concentration has been recursively observed every winter season in Geum River, which hindered chemical treatment processes at a water treatment plant. A flushing discharge from Daecheong Dam was often considered to dilute $NH_3-N$, but information on the quantitative effect of flushing on the downstream water quality was limited. In this study, the impact of a short-term reservoir flushing on the downstream water quality was investigated through field experiments and unsteady water quality modeling. On November 22, 2003, the reservoir discharge was increased from $30m^3/sec$ to $200m^3/sec$ within 6 hours for the purpose of the experiment. The results showed that flushing flow tends to reduce downstream $NH_3-N$ concentrations considerably, but the effectiveness was limited by flushing amount and time. An unsteady river water quality model was applied to simulate the changes of nitrogen concentrations in response to reservoir flushing. The model showed very good performance in predicting the travel time of flushing flow and the effect of flushing discharge on the reduction of downstream $NH_3-N$ concentrations at Maepo and Geumnam site, but a significant discrepancy was observed at Gongju site.
The study was aimed to evaluate the applicability of a three-dimensional (3D) hydrodynamic and water quality model, ELCOM-CAEDYM for Yongdam Reservoir, Korea. The model was applied for the simulations of hydrodynamics, thermal stratification processes, stream density flow propagation, and water quality parameters including dissolved oxygen, nutrients, organic materials, and algal biomass (chl-a) for the period of June to December, 2006. The field data observed at four monitoring stations (ST1~ST4) within the reservoir were used to validate the models performance. The model showed reasonable performance nevertheless low frequency boundary forcing data were provided, and well replicated the physical, chemical, and biological processes of the system. Simulated spatial and temporal variations of water temperature, nutrients, and chl-a concentrations were moderately consistent with the field observations. In particular, the model rationally reproduced the succession of different algal species; i.e., diatom dominant during spring and early summer, after then cyanobacteria dominant under warm and stratified conditions. ELCOM-CAEDYM is recommendable as a suitable coupled 3D hydrodynamic and water quality model that can be effectively used for the advanced water quality management of large stratified reservoirs in Korea.
