The main objective of this study is to investigate the effect of salt water on the mechanical properties of a high modulus carbon-epoxy composite. Specimens were made of a carbon-epoxy composite UPN139B of SK Chemical and tested under inplane tension and shear after 0, 1, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months immersion in 3.5% salt water. Acceleration technique such as temperature elevation was not used. The tensile strengths and modulli in fiber and matrix direction did not show any remarkable degradation until 12 months immersion. In contrast to the tensile properties, shear strength and modulus started to gradually decrease up to about 10% of values of dry specimens after 12 months immersion. It was confirmed through the test that the material UPN139B can be an effective material for the shell structures in salt water to resist against the external pressure buckling because of the high fiber directional modulus and corrosion resistance.
Salt water spray test and salt water immersion test were experimentally conducted in order to investigate the durability of fiber reinforced composites under salt water environment. The specimens were made of glass fabric reinforcement and phenolic resin. Mechanical test was performed to obtain mechanical properties such as tensile properties, flexural properties, and shear properties by varying with exposure times. Also dynamic mechanical test and FTIR were conducted to investigate a change in chemical structure as well as thermal analysis properties such as storage shear modulus, loss shear moduls, and tan ${\delta}$. According to the results, salt water environment has effected on mechanical properties and thermal analysis properties and especially the durability of glass fabric/phenolic composites were severely affected on salt water immersion environment rather than salt water spray environment.
Intrinsic UV reflection and fluorescence behaviors of polycarbonate, polyurethane and poly(ethylene terephthalate) films were investigated in order to characterize the interaction of water in these films. During water sorption process, UV reflection spectra of polycarbonate and polyurethane films showed little peak position changes. Fluorescence emission spectra of polycarbonate films showed red spectral shifts from 332 nm with water immersion time. This red-shifted peak could be due to phenyl-2-phenoxybenzoate, which is one of the major thermal degradation products in polycarbonate. Fluorescence peaks of polyurethane films appeared at two different positions and the ratio of these peak intensities increased with increasing immersion time. In the case of PET films, the UV reflection spectrum showed the peak intensity around 340 nm to change in response to water sorption. The fluorescence near 388 nm probably due to ground state dimer exhibited sensitivity with water sorption, when excited at 340 nm.

Effects of beating and water immersion time on fiber swelling and paper properties were elucidated for the fundamental study of producing high bulk paper. Chemical pulps were beaten for various freeness and the beaten pulp was immersed in water up to 24 hours. Fiber swelling was evaluated by measuring water retention value (WRV). It was found that fiber swelling, bulk and paper strength were quickly changed at the initial stage of beating. Immersion in water did not significantly increase WRV, paper density and strength, implying that soaking in water alone could not effectively swell fiber wall. In order to swell further, hydrogen bonds between fibrils in fiber wall and hence fiber wall structure shall be broken by mechanical force during beating.
Rapid and complete epidermal-dermal separation procedure were determined in neonatal rat skin by light microscopic observation and by compairing enzyme activities in the separated epidermis. Microscopic appearance demonstrated the at four different separation procedures used in the study resulted in good separation of epidermis from dermis` heating method (i.e., immersion in 55C water for 30 sec, followed by immersion in 0-4C water) and microwave irradiation for 10 sec were saving time.

The effect of alkaline environmental condition on durability of GFRP composites according to additives has been investigated. Additives used were polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), kaolin and alumina powder. Weight gains increased with immersion time in all GFRP composites at $80^{\circ}C$. But weight gain of specimen added PVA did not differ through the whole immersion time in both tap water and alkaline solution at 20 and $80^{\circ}C$. Tensile strength decreased with immersion time in all environment conditions. Tensile strength of GFRP composites regardless of additives decreased rapidly up to 5 days of immersion and then decreased slowly up to 30 days in alkaline solution environment at $80^{\circ}C$. The weight gains were not much difference in both tap water and alkaline solution at $20^{\circ}C$. But the ones of GFRP composites added PVA was smaller than the composites without additive in all aqueous at $20^{\circ}C$. Test strength of GFRP composites added polyvinyl alcohol has improved through the whole immersion time in both tap water and alkaline solution environment at $20^{\circ}C$.
This experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of different chilling and packing methods on physico-chernical properties of cold-stored chicken breast and thigh meats. Dehoned chicken breast and thigh meats were chilled either air spray or ice-water immersion method. The chilled meats were either vacuum packed or atmosphere packed, and stored at -2˚C for 1, 3, 7, 11, 15, and 20 days. The pH of both immersion chilled meats and vacuum packed meats were higher than those of their counterparts(P<0.05). The pH of atmosphere packed meats increased as the storage period extended. The moisture contents of vacuum packed meats were remarkably higher than those of atmosphere packed meats. The pH of all treatments decreased as the storage period extended. The shear values of air spray chilled and vacuum packed breast meats were significantly higher than immersion chilled and vacuum packed ones. However, immersion chilled and atmosphere packed breast meats were significantly higher than those of air spray chilled and atmosphere packed breast meats. The shear values of immersion chilled and vacuum packed thigh meats were significantly higher than those of immersion chilled and vacuum packed thigh meats. In atmosphere packed thigh meats, air spray chilling method showed higher shear values than those of immersion chilled thigh meats. In thigh muscle, tenderness values tended to decrease as the storage period extended(P<0.05). Contents of water soluble proteins of vacuum packed and air spray chilled breast and thigh meats were higher than those of their counterparts as the storage period extended(P<0.05). The contents of water soluble proteins significantly decreased as the storage period extended. Salt soluble proteins of atmosphere packed breast and thigh meats were remarkably higher than those of vacuum packed ones(P<0.05). Total lipid contents of atmosphere packed and air spray chilled breast and thigh meats were higher than those of atmosphere packed and immersion chilled meats as the storage period extended. The vacuum packed meats were significantly higher in total lipid contents than those of atmosphere packed meats. The storage period decreased the total lipid contents of cold chicken, Major fatty acids in cold-stored chicken were oleic, palmitic, linoleic and stearic acids, regardless of chilling method. Unsaturated fatty acids of all treatments decreased, but saturated fatty acids increased as the storage period extended.
This study has been investigated about the influence of moisture environment properties in the unidirectional and cross laminated carbon fiber/epoxy and glass fiber/epoxy composites. As a results, it was found that the weight gain of water increased with the immersion time and the mechanical properties were decreased with the weight gain of water. And it was also shown that the mechanical properties of carbon fiber/epoxy laminates were better than those of glass fiber/epoxy laminates. And a gap of the mechanical properties between the two kinds of laminates was increasing with the immersion time in distilled water of 80$^{\circ}C $. Mechanical properties which decreased by moisture absorption in the CF and GF reinforced laminates were recovered up to some extent by drying in oven at 80$^{\circ}C $ for 10 days.

This paper describes the electrical characteristics of the polymer lightning arresters(L.As) used to protect distribution lines and power facilities from surge. For the relative comparison, the characteristics assessment was done for 2 states of L.As before and after water immersion treatment. The L.As for the comparative test were immersed with water of $95[^{\circ}C]$ considered a severe condition. After the immersion treatment, the assessment was carried out for material analyses in chemical structure(FTIR : fourier transform infrared spectrophotometer). Electrical performance measured insulation resistance measurement, leakage current measurement, critical operation voltage measurement etc.. In addition to, the results were compared with those for the L.As deteriorated in the field. Thus, the accelerative deterioration degree of polymer materials by immersion treatment was evaluated, by which the structural defects of the polymer L.As could be inferred.

This study was started to investigate why autoclave curing (AC) specimen showed an improvement in compressive strength after immersion in water for a long time, although AC specimen did not showed a high initial compressive strength unlike our expectations. Distilled water and alkaline solutions were used for immersion and three different curing methods were engaged. It was expected that the compressive strength would be improved after immersion in alkaline solutions; however, there was little difference in compressive strength after 21 day immersion because both new crystallites produced by additional geopolymerization and expansion caused by the alkaline aggregate reaction may prevent the additional improvement in compressive strength. It was concluded that in order to secure the long-term commonality and underwater stability of the geopolymers, it is desirable aging geopolymers while immersing it underwater for more than 21 days after curing using an autoclave.
