  • The purpose of this research is to find out teachers' understanding and recognition about the water and the water environment education and to suggest the strategies of water education at school based on survey results. Results of the study are as follows: First, teachers had high level of water related knowledge and awareness about importance of the water environment education. However, they showed low level of environment educational efforts and environment protection behaviour in daily life. Second, they had a little chance to have the educational training for the water environment education. Third, the water environment education at schools has been made in very restricted areas such as water related scientific knowledge and water pollution. Fourth, teachers pointed out the biggest obstacle for the water environment education would be the lack of teaching materials and the second biggest one was the lack of educational facilities at schools. Based on the survey results, it was found out that in order to improve the water environment education at schools, substantial research by the teachers shall be implemented for all teachers of every subject to build up their capacity in adapting the water education to their subjects.

  • Water problems recently, not only influence environmental issues such as water quality and water management but also influence socioeconomic issues such as poverty, gender, and regional conflicts. Therefore there is increasing attention on water education as part of the environmental education. Yet water education in formal education is only treated with particular subjects like science and social studies with limited contents which fails to cover the social, economic problems related to water thoroughly. Also, though there is an active water education on the field of informal education. its contents are also very limited. Water education requires the implementation of a comprehensive and holistic approach that can holistically consider economic and social problems as well as environmental problems. Therefore in this research, 'water education for sustainable development' is set up as a direction of contents development which include interdisciplinary and holistic aspects. Contents development of water education for sustainable development is an reflection of the experts and teacher's opinions and contain of: main category dividing into three pillars of sustainable development such as environment, economy, and society, and subcategory covering environmental science's objective including knowledge, skill, attitude, and action as well as local, national, regional, and global issues.

  • Recently, alarming rates of climate change have amplified the importance of water conservation in the agricultural sector; emphasizing the implementation of an integrated approach as the principal water management strategy. As part of comprehensive measures to cope with drought in the agricultural and rural sectors, water-saving education models and pilot projects for farmers' education have been implemented since 2016, but these activities were launched as a one-time project in limited areas. Therefore, systematic and extensive efforts are required to highlight the site-specific and tangible benefits of water-saving education and public relations projects. As part of this study, educational sessions and surveys were conducted in the Yeoju-Icheon, Seosan-Taean, and Gyeongju areas to reflect the on-site applicability of the water-saving education model. Based on the survey of previous studies, a total of 16 water-saving effectiveness factors were developed and the effectiveness was derived for each factor. As a result of farmer education, the overall effectiveness evaluation score of 1.13 increased to 3.34, and the effectiveness of each factor was also improved. These water-saving education effectiveness factors can be used as basic data for determining and launching future policies or systems to improve the water-saving education of farmers. In addition, this study raises the need to prepare feasible related systems that can lead farmers to actively participate in water management and conservation and to promote systematic and continuous water conservation education and promotion policies.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze water words written by college students in order to investigate their cognition by using 'contents of water education for sustainable development'. For this study, researchers applied qualitative analysis methods such as a mind map and a water word association test, as well as quantitative analysis methods including a water common sense quiz and a survey of water cognition. The results of this study were as follows; First, college students were rarely interested in water, since the score of a water common sense quiz was quite low; water cognition that college students felt in their daily life was also deficient. Second, college student data shows that while they had specific water cognition, they did not have integrated view of water. Therefore, the study on water cognition of balanced views related to water should be carried out through developing and appling a interdisciplinary subject.

  • The purpose of this study was to develope the water environmental education program using animation and to examine the learning effect of the animation based learning program(ALP) on elementary school students. The program consisted of raising a question in everyday life, history and water, the present condition of water resources, the future of water and mankind, and a view and a measure of water. Following development, it was applied to 127 fifth grade students in Busan. With dividing them into two groups: the controlled group and the experimental one, lessons were executed respectively. After experiencing each class, the experimental groups showed higher recognition on importance of water, water pollution, and insufficiency of water and their attitude toward water was improved affirmatively than the controlled group.

  • To investigate the water quality and the pollution state of lower Yeongsan river system, 38 water samples were taken from the main stream of the Yeongsan river, Gomakwon and Hampyeong streams of the system in dry and flood seasons, May and August, 2001. The Yeongsan river is typically natural in accordance with pH-& diagram. But the chemistry based on Piper's diagram indicates that the river is influenced by seawater. BOD increases as the sampling sites are approaching the downstream in Gomakwon and Hampyeong streams overwhelming WQS V grade of 12.40mg/l. T-N and T-P of the river are mainly loaded not in above branch streams but in the main stream of the river, which are caused by manure for farming, domestic animal discharges and life-sewage, in possible. Meanwhile, heavy metal contents are below WQS or not detect in whole water samples. So, it shows that the above river waters be polluted by not industrial but life/agricultural foul waters.

  • Electrical Conductivity (EC) or Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) has been often used to evaluate the water quality in some water education program for children and youth. This study attempted to find out whether EC (or TDS) can be used as a water pollution criteria in water education program. To clarify it, we used the water analysis data of July 2019 and January 2020 from Water Environment Information System. Data from 332 points in Han-river were used to investigate correlation between the parameters, such as BOD, COD, TN, TP vs EC. Correlation(r) for all data of BOD vs. EC was 0.347 for July 2019 and 0.483 for January 2020. No correlation was observed for BOD Ia and BOD Ib for July 2019 (r=-0.041, -0.030, respectively) and BOD Ia for January 2020 (r=0.041). Better correlation for all data of COD vs. EC was obtained (r=0.543 for July 2019 and r=0.610 for January 2020). However, no correlation was observed for COD Ia for January 2020. High vlaue of EC or TDS does not always mean water pollution, especially for clean water environment. Thus, EC (or TDS) alone can not be used as a water pollution criteria.
