Measurements of backscattered intensity were made over a shallow water using 300 ㎑and 1200 ㎑ bottom mounted ADCP (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler) to determine the temporal variability of vertical distribution of high-frequency volume scattering strength (Sv). The variability of Sv in relatively deep water column(85 m and 113 m was due to the daily vertical migration, probably of larger zooplankton. However it was not found with 1200㎑ data at shallow water column. From the empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis using 1200㎑ data, the vertical distribution of the first mode eigenvectors of Sv is characterized by the presence of the maximum values near the bottom of the water.
Photosynthetic pigments, nutrients, and hydrographic variables were examined in order to elucidate the spatio-temporal variation of water column structure and its effect on phytoplankton community structure in the western channel of the Korea Strait in fall 2006 and spring 2007. High phytoplankton biomass in the spring was associated with high salinity, implying that nutrients were not supplied by coastal waters or the Yangtze-River Diluted water (YRDW) with low salinity. Expansion of the Korea Strait Bottom Cold Water (KSBCW) and a cold eddy observed during the spring season might enhance the nutrient supply from the subsurface layer to the euphotic zone. Chemotaxonomic examination showed that diatoms accounted for 60-70% of total biomass, followed by dinoflagellates. Nutrient supply by physical phenomena such as the expansion of the KSBCW and the occurrence of a cold eddy appears to be the controlling factors of phytoplankton community composition in the Korea Strait. Further study is needed to elucidate the mechanisms by which the KSBCW is expanded, and its role in phytoplankton dynamics.
Billions of barrels of briny produced water are generated in the United States every year during oil and gas production. The first step toward recovering or reusing this water is to remove the hazardous organics dissolved in the briny produced water. Biological degradation of hazardous volatile compound could be possible regardless of salinity if they were extracted from briny water. In the current work, the effectiveness of a vapor phase biofilter to degrade the gas-phase contaminants (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes, BTEX) extracted from briny produced water was evaluated. The performance of biofilter system responded well to short periods when the BTEX feed to the biofilter was discontinued. To challenge the system further, the biofilter was subjected to periodic spikes in inlet BTEX concentration as would be expected when it is coupled to a Surfactant-Modified Zeolite (SMZ) bed. Results of these experiments indicate that although the BTEX removal efficiency declined under these conditions, it stabilized at 75% overall removal even when the biofilter was provided with BTEX-contaminated air only 8 hours out of every 24 hours. Benzene removal was found to be the most sensitive to time varying loading conditions. A passive, granular activated carbon bed was effective at attenuating and normalizing the peak BTEX loadings during SMZ regeneration over a range of VOC loads. Field testing of a SMZ bed coupled with an activated carbon buffering/biofilter column verified that this system could be used to remove and ultimately biodegrade the dissolved BTEX constituents in briny produced water.

Recently, as part of diversifying energy sources and earth environmental issues, technology development of new renewable energy using wave energy is actively promoted and commercialized around Europe and Japan etc. In particular, OWC(Oscillating Water Column) wave power generation system using air flow induced by vertical movement of the water surface by waves in an air-chamber within caisson is known as the most efficient wave energy absorption device and therefore, is one of the wave power generation apparatus the closest to commercialization. This study examines air flow velocity, which operates turbine(Wells turbine) directly in oscillating water column type wave power generation structure from two-and three-dimensional numerical experiments and discusses optimal shape of oscillating water column type wave power generation structure by estimating the maximum flow rate of air according to change in shape. The three-dimensional numerical wave flume was applied in interpretation for this study which is the model for the immiscible two-phase flow based on the Navier-Stokes Equation. From this, it turned out that size of optimal shape appears differently according to the incident wave period and air flow is maximized at the period where minimum reflection ratio occurs.

Peat humin(p-Humin) extracted from Canadian Sphagnum peat moss was packed in a column and removal of heavy metal ions such as Cd, Cu and Pb from aqueous solution under flow conditions was studied. The metal ions were removed not only from single-element solutions but also from a multi-metal solution. Column kinetics for metal removal were described by the Thomas model. For single-component metal solutions, the maximum adsorption capacities of the p-Humin for Pb, Cu and Cd were 138.8, 44.66 and 41.61 mg/g, respectively. The results of multi-component competitive adsorption showed that adsorption affinity was in the order of Pb $\gg$ Cu > Cd. The adsorbed metal ions were easily deserted from the p-Humin with 0.05 N $HNO_3$ solution. It is apparent that 95% of the heavy metal ions were recovered from the saturated column. This investigation provides possibility to clean up heavy-metal contaminated waste waters by using the natural biomass, p-Humin as an environmentally friendly and cost-effective new biosorbents.
In this work, column flotation using factorial design was performed for recovering high-grade molybdenite concentrate. First, the flotation concentrate from Samyang Mining Plant was regrinded to a mean size of 165, 116, 46.7, and 38.4 ㎛ for an increase of the liberation degree. Tests were carried out for various variables affecting column flotation, and then the concentrates with molybdenite grade and recovery of 98.3 % and 95.28 % were obtained, respectively. Also, regression was performed using the statistical analysis program (SPSS 25) with the factorial design and experimental data on particle size, flow wash-water velocity and depressant that affect high grade. From the results, a model equation was derived to predict the molybdenite grade (MG) and recovery (MR) with the relationship between column flotation variables. Factors such as depressant concentration + wash-water velocity and particle size + depressant concentration + wash-water velocity were smaller than the significance level (0.05) and had a significant effect on the dependent variable, grade, and in the recovery model, only particle size and wash-water velocity factors affected the dependent variable, recovery.
Due to the fast response to algae bloom issue in drinking water treatment plant, very fast determination methodology for algal toxin is required. In this study, column switching technique based online preconcentration method was combined with high resolution full scan mass spectrometer to save sample preparation time and to obtain fast and accurate result. After parameter optimization of online preconcentration, 1mL filtered sample was directly injected to trap column with switching valve system. Next, target toxins are eluted by 98% acetonitrile and analysed with 150 - 1,100 amu scan range at 50,000 resolving power. Method detection limit (MDL) for microcystin-LR, the most toxic isomer, was 0.1 ng/mL and others such as microcystin-YR, microcystin-RR and nodularin were 0.08, 0.03 and 0.04 ng/mL, respectively. This is the best improved sensitivities with 1mL volume in the literature. Furthermore, due to the use of ultra pressure HPLC (UPLC), the whole method run was completed in 4 min. Real sample applications for 173 sample including 55 surface water and 118 treatment plant samples for raw and treated water could be done within 16 hours. In our calculation, this methodology is roughly 80% faster than the previous manual solid-phase extraction with LC-MS/MS method.
The SCW ground heat pump system releases ground energy from the ground water of ground heat exchanger. In other word, ground water is used to heating through releases ground energy which oneself has. But the thermal efficiency of system is going to down because repetitive process of ground water will lost ground energy in standing column well system and if heating load is continually increase, energy of ground water may be frozen or there are no benefits to use ground energy as it owes just little energy. To solve these problems, there are need to exchange water to the ground heat exchanger then the way will be used to maintain Efficiency continually as the way of to be supplied with fresh ground water into ground heat exchanger. However, this type causes waste of ground water. Therefore it is essential to discharge water to outside timely on a heat exchanger. Therefor through a study, find out the best time to discharge water to outside and exchange water to ground heat exchanger, and propose to the DB of design of the ground heat exchanger.
The typical properties of manganese nodules are its high porosity and high specific surface area and manganese in nodules is existed as ${\delta}$-MnO$_2$. These properties suggest that manganese nodules ran be used as an adsorbent for heavy metal ions. This study investigated the practical applicability for the removal of copper ions in the waste water by manganese nodules as an adsorbent using fixed column and fix bed systems. Manganese nodules of 1kg (size 1-3 cm) can absorb 4.0g Cu in fixed column system and 2.3g Cu in fixed bed system from waste water for 3 hours respectively.

Although Pacific mackerel (Scomber japonicus) is an important commercial species in Korea, its recruitment mechanism remains largely unknown. Diel vertical positioning of larvae in the water column, which is affected by their specific gravity and the surrounding water density, may help to provide an understanding on recruitment success through predator avoidance and prey availability. The specific gravity measurement on Pacific mackerel eggs and larvae would seem to be essential information necessary to learn about the transport process from spawning to nursery grounds, and consequently the recruitment success. Eggs were artificially fertilized, and larvae were fed with rotifer when their mouths opened 3-4 days after hatching. We conducted the experiment using a density gradient water column to measure the ontogenetic changes in specific gravity from fertilization to 10 days after hatching. Egg specific gravity was stable during most of the embryonic period, but a sudden increase to $1.0249g\;cm^{-3}$ happened just before hatching. However, the specific gravity of newly hatched larvae was much lighter ($1.0195g\;cm^{-3}$), and specific gravity tended to increase continuously after hatching. Comparison of specific gravity with seawater density reveals that eggs and newly hatched larvae can float in the surface layer of the ocean. For the later period of the experiment, the specific gravity showed a cyclic diel pattern: the highest in the evening while the lowest at dawn. The fullness of larval stomach may be responsible for the observed differences in specific gravity, because stomach fullness was lower (40-60%) at midnight, and higher (80-85%) in evening. The diel pattern of specific gravity might provide clues regarding how larvae match the diel vertical migration of prey organisms.
