Heavy metals concentration in superficial sediment of effluent discharging area was rapidly increased by annual loadings of Zn(8.465 Kg), Ni(3,291 Kg), Cu(1,636 Kg) and Pb(1,250 Kg) from sewage effluent of 63×10/sup 6/ m³/yr. In a consequent result, specially the concentrations of Zn and Cu in the sediment were three times higher than preindustrial reference values. The evaluation by multiple ecological risk indices showed that heavy metals contamination in sediment of discharging area was 'heavily Polluted level' by sediment quality criteria and increased 2.6 times by the degree of contamination. It was also judged that toxicological effects of sediment receiving the primary effluent would occasionally (16~47%) occur by guidelines for adverse biological effect.
The production and location of xylanolytic enzymes in alkaliphilic Bacillus sp. K-1, isolated from the wastewater treatment plant of the pulp and paper industry, was studied. When grown in alkaline xylan medium, the bacteria produced xylanolytic enzymes such as xylanase, $\beta$-xylosidase, arabinofuranosidase, and acetyl esterase. Two types of xylanases (23 and 45 kDa) were found to be extracellular, but another type of xylanase (35 and/or 40 kDa) was detected as pellet-bound that was eluted with 2% triethylamine from the residual xylan of the culture. The xylanases were different in their molecular weight and xylan-binding ability. Arabinofuranosidase and $\beta$-xylosidase were found to be intracellular and extracellular, respectively, and acetyl esterase was found to be extracellular. The extracellular xylanolytic enzymes effectively hydrolyzed insoluble xylan, lignocellulosic materials, and xylans in kraft pulps.

A highly sensitive analytical method based on stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) technique and gas chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (GC/MS-MS) has been developed, allowing the simultaneous multi-analyte determination of seven UV filters in water samples. The stir bar coated with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was added to 40 mL of water sample at pH 3 and stirred at 1,100 rpm for 120 min. Other SBSE parameters (salt effect and presence of organic solvent) were optimised. The method shows good linearity (coefficients > 0.990) and reproducibility (RSD < 12.9%). The extraction efficiencies were above 84% for all the compounds. The limits of detections (LOD) and limits of quantification (LOQ) were 2.1~8.6 ng/L and 6.8~27.5 ng/L, respectively. The developed method offers the ability to detect 8 UV filters at ultra-low concentration levels with only 40 mL of sample volume. Matrix effects in tap water, river water, wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) final effluent water and seawater were investigated and it was shown that the method is suitable for the analysis of trace level of 7 UV filters except of benzophenone (BP). The method developed in the present study has the advantage of being rapid, simple, high-sensitive and both user and environmentally friendly.
It is necessary to evaluate performances hitherto carried out in the management of Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs) and to set up direction so that this system can be improved continuously in the future. This study was investigated load allocation achievement ratio, water quality goal achievement ratio and interrelation between water quality goal and load allocation for the first period (2004~2010). Load allocation achievement and BOD water quality goal achievement ratio were 50% and 73% in Guem River Basin, respectively. The main reason for excess of load allocation and shortfall of water quality goal were unfulfilled reduction plan and pollution sources increment. Therefore, it is necessary to develop enhanced pollution sources prediction method and make a list realizable reduction plan. 63% of the unit watershed was not interrelation between water quality goal and load allocation. The reason why water quality goal and load allocation had not correlation were water quality of upper unit watershed, increment of inflow quantity, effluent water quality of wastewater treatment plant affected the unit watershed, increment of inner productivity by algae, water quality deterioration during the specific period, river management flow, etc.

Maintaining dissolved oxygen (DO) at sufficiently low concentration in the aeration tank at a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) is essential for reduction of the costs of operation and maintenance. On the other hand, the low DO level may result in adverse effect on the integrity of the activated sludge, A typical and disastrous outcome frequently experienced is the outgrowth of filamentous microorganisms, which is called as filamentous bulking, In addition to the traditional methods such as sludge settleability and microscopic observation of the culture, molecular techniques including polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification followed by 16S rRNA sequencing were applied to identify filamentous bacteria present in bulking sludge under a condition of low DO concentration, Two morphologically distinct groups, presumably consisting of Sphaerofilus nafans, and Eikelboom Type 1701 or Type 1851, were identified through microscopic observation. They were further confirmed by subsequent 16S rRNA sequencing. Dominant filamentous bacteria identified by the molecular techniques were consisted of three major groups. Sequences of partial 16S rRNA cloned showed that the filamentous bulking organisms were closely related to Eikelboom Type 021N and Eikelboom Type 1701, and Sphaerotilus natans, respectively. Molecular methods were found to possess a strong potential of direct examination of the microbial community of an activated sludge system.
The contamination loadings generated in Changwon City are coming into Masan Bay through the Bongam tidal flat except the loadings collected and transferred by sewer lines to the wastewater treatment plant. The recovery of waterbirds, shellfishes, and fishes has been quite well recognized in recent years after the first implementation of Masan Bay TPLM (Total Pollution Loads Management) in Korea. This tidal flat has been conserved by the cooperation of several stakeholders and utilized as an ecosystem field site for in situ education. A large industrial complex has been operated since 1970's, therefore increasing the level of pollutants in estuary and costal sediments, especially by heavy metals. Zinc, copper, and lesd contamination of sediment was revealed at higher level by Clean-up guideline (MOMAF) or heavily polluted level by SQC (USEPA). There was a significant difference between two sites at the 95% confidence level, which implies no homogeneity in the processes of transport and deposition even at 500 m of distance. The heavy metal concentrations in the Bongam sediments have been gradually decreased with comparing the data of 2006, and 2009.

The uncertainty in water quality model predictions is inevitably high due to natural stochasticity, model uncertainty, and parameter uncertainty. An integrated modeling system under uncertainty was described and demonstrated for use in watershed management and receiving-water quality prediction. A watershed model (HSPF), a receiving water quality model (WASP), and a wetland model (NPS-WET) were incorporated into an integrated modeling system (modified-BASINS) and applied to the Hwaseong Reservoir watershed. Reservoir water quality was predicted using the calibrated integrated modeling system, and the deterministic integrated modeling output was useful for estimating mean water quality given future watershed conditions and assessing the spatial distribution of pollutant loads. A Monte Carlo simulation was used to investigate the effect of various uncertainties on output prediction. Without pollution control measures in the watershed, the concentrations of total nitrogen (T-N) and total phosphorous (T-P) in the Hwaseong Reservoir, considering uncertainty, would be less than about 4.8 and 0.26 mg 4.8 and 0.26 mg $L^{-1}$, respectively, with 95% confidence. The effects of two watershed management practices, a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and a constructed wetland (WETLAND), were evaluated. The combined scenario (WWTP + WETLAND) was the most effective at improving reservoir water quality, bringing concentrations of T-N and T-P in the Hwaseong Reservoir to less than 3.54 and 0.15 mg ${L^{-1}$, 26.7 and 42.9% improvements, respectively, with 95% confidence. Overall, the Monte Carlo simulation in the integrated modeling system was practical for estimating uncertainty and reliable in water quality prediction. The approach described here may allow decisions to be made based on probability and level of risk, and its application is recommended.

The microcosm type wetland systems were constructed in order to treat wastewater contaminated with parathion. The microcosm reactor consisted of marsh and pond type. The experiment was carried out using batch (marsh or pond) and continuous (marsh-pond and pond-marsh type) systems. In the batch reactor, marsh-type wetland completely removed parathion in water within 8 days, while pond reactor removed 97% of parathion during the same period. During parathion degradation, the amount of 4-nitrophenol production, one of the metabolites from parathion degradation, was higher in marsh-type batch reactor. In the continuous systems, both marsh-pond and pond-marsh combination systems effectively removed parathion from water, and the production of 4-nitrophenol was also minimal. In the extraction experiment, the parathion and its metabolite were not found in the wetland soil and the plant. In order to achieve both aerobic and anaerobic conditions, the continuous wetland system combining marsh and pond type can be the alternative for the non-point source pollutants such as parathion pesticide.

A characteristics of microwave drying-gasification was analyzed for converting a dewatered sewage sludge generated a wastewater treatment plant. Gas (60%) was the largest component of the product of microwave gasification, followed by sludge char (33%) and tar (2%). The main components of the producer gas were hydrogen (33%) and carbon monoxide (40%), and there was some methane and hydrocarbons ($C_2H_4$, $C_2H_6$, $C_3H_8$). Larger nitrogen and smaller oxygen amounts were generated. Gravimetric tar generated $414g/m^3$. This means a total tar which is a heavy hydrocarbons from the volatile organic substance in the sewage sludge. Selected light tars were benzene, anthracene, naphthalene, pyrene, showing lower concentrations as 2.62, 0.37, 0.49, $0.28g/m^3$, respectively. Sludge char has larger meso pores which is a mean pore size of $50.85{\AA}$ and has high adsorptivity. An amount of adsorption was $228.71cm^3/g$, showing higher quantity than acommercial adsorbers. This indicates that the gas obtained from the microwave gasification of wet sewage sludge can be used as fuel, but the heavy tar in the gas must be treated. Sludge char can be used as a tar reduction adsorbent in the process, and then burns as a solid fuel.

본 연구에 사용된 모델은 IWA(International Water Association) 활성슬러지 모델 No.1 (ASM No.1)이었고, GPS-X가 시뮬레이터로 사용되었다.
