  • Rotary kiln in cement work has been evaluated for a wide variety of organic wastes such as wood, used tyres, plastic wastes and automobile shredder residue (ASR). However the presence of chlorine hampers the use of ASR as fuel in rotary kiln. Therefore, the behavior characteristics of chlorine components in rotary kiln should be considered to develop an effective method for ASR treatment to recovery energy resources. The aim of this paper is to present the chlorine control system applied to a cement manufacturing process for ASR use as an alternative fuel. In this work, the simulation of bypass unit and cyclones for chlorine control in rotary kiln has been studied and compared with the operation results of field test.

  • effectiveness of the PAM graphite-electrode technology for the treatment of many types of low-level radioactive waste including : combustible material, solidified resins in cement, inorganic materials, steel, glass, and solidified boric acid cement. The objectives of PAM-200 evaluation were to verify that 1) the facility meets air emission regulations, 2) the facility can be safely operated when processing hazardous and radioactive materials and 3) satisfactory final waste forms can be produced. Results, derived from KAERI's(Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute) analyses for samples of vitrified product, scrubbing solution and offgas collected during test period, show that PAM-200 can treat radioactive wastes as well as hazardous wastes with toxic constituents and radionuclides contained in the offgas exiting from the stack to the environment controlled to be far lower than the limit regulated by air conservation law and atomic law.

  • Seaweed waste(SWW) was used to improve the liner effect in recycling of dredged soil as the landfill liner. It was found that the compressive strength became somewhat lower when SWW was added than that was when Ordinary Port-land Cement(OPC) only was added. The permeability coefficient, however, became lower in this case which showed the lowest permeability coefficient when the addition of SWW was one percent. Hence, to comply with the regulations for the compression strength and permeability coefficient of landfill liner, the addition of OPC should be over eight percent and that of seaweed waste one percent. The results of leaching test showed that the solidified material was not against the laws of waste control, so it is possible to use as the landfill liner and to expect sufficient economic effects because wastes such as dredged soil and seaweed can be recycled.

  • In this study, to determine the optimum fermentation process for the feed production of food wastes and estimate the practical value of fermented feed using kudzu creeper and sawdust as bulking agent. This study considered initial C/N ratio control as the fermentation process variables. The result are summarized as follows. Minimum water contents of byproducts in the fermentation feed production showed 39%(kudzu), 37%(sawdust) at the C/N ratio 25 and 45%(kudzu, sawdust) at the C/N ratio 35. Temperature variations in the fermentation feed production at the C/N ratio 25 indicated $68^{\circ}C$(kudzu), $70^{\circ}C$(sawdust). Optimum condition of fermentation process of water content, C/N ratio and permeability (porous structure of the mixture). For optimum fermentation gravitationally dewatered garbage, the proper mixing ratios of kudzu(moisture contents : 17.3%) and sawdust(moisture contents : 13.2%) were 41% and 39%, respectively. Major biological reaction in the aerobic fermentation feed production occurred during 12~24hrs.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the efficiency of steel mill slag and sludge in removing heavy metals and cyanide in metal plating wastewater. Laboratory experiments were peformed with jar tester, The tests were peformed at ambient temperature. The results of tests showed that overall rates metals removed were greater than 90 %. Metals were removed from solution as the combined effects of adsorption and precipitation in alkaline condition. The removal efficiency of cyanide by steel mill wastes was above 90 % at optimum conditions. In view of the test results and other engineering characteristics of steel mill slag and sludge, these industrial by-products from steel industry have a high potential to be used in metal plating wastewater treament and were particularly beneficial.

  • This paper outlined the status of the development of Korean Reference Disposal (KRS1) system for high-level radioactive wastes. The repository concept was based on the engineering barrier system which KAERI has developed through a long-term research and development program. The design requirements were prepared for the conceptual design of the repository. The amount of PWR and CANDU spent fuels were projected with the current nuclear power plan. The disposal rates of PWR and CANDU spent fuels were analyzed. The reference geologic characteristics including classification of fracture zones were set for the KRS. The disposal concepts and the layout of the repository were described.

  • A lot of hazardous wastes are discharged as by-products of working process by industrial development. Hazardous wastes is physical characteristics of difficult destruction at hight temperature. Numerical simulation and combustion experiment performed of dump incinerator for hazardous waste incineration. For the numerical simulation, the SIMPLEST algorithm was used to ensure rapid converge A K-$\varepsilon$ model was incorporate for the enclosure of turbulence flow. Combustion model was used by ESCRS (extended simple chemically reacting system) model available of CHEMKIN thermodynamic data for the source term of species conservation equation or energy equation. Radiation model is used by six flux model. A parametric screening studies was carried out through numerical simulation and experiment. Residence time and concentration in the incinerator was strongly dependent on the parameters of mixture velocity, mixture equilibrium ratio, surrogate velocity and surrogate equilibrium ratio.

  • Due to the demolition of old structures, primarily buildings, an amount of discharged construction wastes are increased. From the construction wastes, recycled aggregate can be used as a useful resource for concrete. However, its application to structural member is very limited. In this experimental study, the compressive strength of spun-concrete using recycled aggregate was investigated. Coarse aggregate was replaced with $100\%$ of the recycled coarse aggregate, and recycled fine aggregate was replaced with various amount. According to the test results, the specimen of spun-concrete showed uniform compressive strength regardless the amount of replaced recycled fine aggregate.
