The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of the temple wastes and suggest the waste management guidelines for temples in natural parks. Study results revealed four important findings. First, it was found that the average quantity of the total temple wastes was 85,786g/day which was composed of general wastes(44,617g/day), food wastes(20,292g/day), recycling wastes(20.825g/day), and buddhist service wastes(60g/day). The average generation per capita of the temple wastes was 1,511g/capita day and the average bulk density was 0.102kg/l. Second, the food scrap was of small quantity(72.5g/day) because the traditional buddhist eating method, "Baru meal(鉢盂供養)" prohibits food abuse. This amount is very little compared to that produced in the general household in Korea. Third, the average quantity of the buddhist service wastes was 300-1,650g/one time. This wastes occupied 0.07% of the total temple wastes. Fourth, the average waste generated by visitors was 182.8g/person, which occupied 87.1% of the total temple wastes and costed 52,100,000 Wons to treat.
Each year the amount of construction wastes increases at a rapid pace. Particularly, wastes from apartment housing projects that make up 89.14% of the total construction projects have increased about 48% as compared with those of the year 2000. Construction wastes are therefore rising as an issue related to environmental problems and disposal costs. And there are ongoing studies of the disposal, control and recycling of construction wastes. Mitigation measures for the wastes, however, have been a rare subject of research that focuses on waste-generating factors by activity during apartment housing projects. Given that, the purpose of this study was to categorize construction wastes by work type and to identify the factors causing wastes in order to reduce them. This study investigated the amount of the wastes from apartment housing constructions by activity as related to disposal costs, and examined causes in the ordering, transport, material management and construction stage, respectively. The analysis results will likely bring about expectation effects that help reduce the generation of the wastes by establishing action plans.

The treatment of city life wastes is headache problem. Now, only small portion of burnable wastes is burnt at modern process incinerators, the other large portion is buried in the soil by landfill method. The burnable wastes will be increased year by year. The dioxin, the cancer-causing agent, produced by incineration of wastes influences harmful effect to national human health. The new idea of burnable wastes treatment is using the city life wastes as auxiliary fuel of fluidizing bed combustion boiler of large scale coal-fired power plant. The dioxin-free treatment of burnable wastes is sucessfully achieved by burning the wastes, in flyash storm at fluidizing bed combustion boiler.
This research was conducted to survey amounts of kitchen wastes disposed and to find method for reduction of the kitchen wastes. Questionnaires were developed. Survey was conducted in Korean style restaurants 1,292 in nationwide and recovery rate of questionnaires is 97.52%. Amounts of kitchen wastes disposed were calculated using programme developed in this research institute. As a results, wastes of food disposed in prepreparation phase large quantities is the vegetables. Wastes of fruits, fishes and shellfishes were disposed in large quantities, too. Amounts of wastes of boiled chicken with ginseng, Jeon-Gol, and rosted beef ribs in dishes were much due to refuse portion as bone. Wastes of kitchen are composed of food wastes 44%, dishes wastes 56% in nationwide in Korean style restaurants. Amounts of kitchen wastes disposed in Korean style restaurants are 28.33 kg in large city, 24 kg in small city and rural, respectively. Methods for the effective reduction of kitchen wastes in restaurants were suggested. Also, it is possible to utilize the kitchen waste as fertilizer or feed for animals but economic feasibility could cause problems.
The objective of this study is to introduce the definitions and classification methods of wastes in international agreements and legislations, examine the concept of wastes and their classification systems in Korea, and finally analyze and compare the concept of wastes in different countries for finding better solutions and suggestions. The study summarizes the concept of wastes as introduced in the Basel Convention, OECD, EU, US, and UK. First, each of the member countries adapt to the same concepts of wastes as defined in their international agreements; second, the intention of the wastes holder and the conditions of the wastes are considered at the same time when defining the concepts. Upon close examination of the classification of wastes systems as introduced in the Basel Convention, OECD, EU, US, and UK, the wastes are classified into toxic and non-toxic wastes according to the existence of poisonous substances. Therefore, it is classified as a toxic waste when any toxic substance on its list is included in the waste, while others are considered as a non-toxic waste if they don't contain poisonous substances. Secondly, in the UK, the matter of toxic or non-toxic wastes are classified, not according to the existence of the poisonous substances, but based on the generation of sources. In Korea, the concepts of wastes are divided into the two categories - a concept as defined in actual legislations and a concept in its translation. The Korean classification of the wastes include Wastes Management Act, amended in 1995, which stipulates that toxic substances should be managed in a special way as the designated wastes. It appears that the Act utilizes the classification method that classifies the wastes according to the existence of poisonous substance. Korea's concepts of wastes should be changed after recognition of the concepts in international agreement (Basel Convention, EU) and other foreign laws(US, UK) that consider subjective and objective standards at the same time when they define the concepts. Also, the development of technology in recycling and reuse of the wastes can remove the current absolute notion of the wastes so that it also should not be passed over. Also, because a classification structure of wastes has a close relationship with a disposal structure, its classification system should be fixed gradually to come up with the development of wastes disposal technology and its policy.
Characteristic of wastes in a unsanitary landfill at the residential development site in H city, Kyunggi-do was investigated for the disposal of huge amount of wastes. The total amount of wastes was estimated at 117,000 ton and construction solid wastes and municipal solid wastes were detected together. The portion of combustibles was very low and soils, concrete wastes, and pebbles were the major components in landfilled wastes. Because the site was the residential development site, the landfilled wastes should be removed immediately for the construction. Therefore the way that the unsanitary landfill was excavated and the wastes were sorted into three categories such as soils, noncombustibles and combustibles was selected as the best method. Soils and noncombustibles could be recycled and sorted combustibles could be re-landfilled in a smaller area or incinerated.
This study investigated the microbiological changes and distribution of bacteria producing enzyme in order to change food wastes to animal feed during 6 days at room temperature. Food wastes were divided as follows: one is untreated food wastes containing 80% water content and another wastes containing 40% water content adiusted by wheat bran. During the fermentation of food wastes, Lactobacillus sp. and Streptococcus sp. were grown the top position among investigated microorganisms in both of food wastes. Numbers of total microorganisms were much more than untreated wastes during fermentation of flood wastes with 40% water content. But, Streptococcus sp. and Enterobacteriaceae from 4 to 6 days were not detected in treated wastes with 40% water contents. This fact indicated that the adiustment of water content in food waste was effective in fermentation. However, the numbers of microorganisms producing pretense were low in both treated and untreated food wastes. These results suggested that flood wastes should be treated as food wastes with 40% water content to maintain a lot of fermentative microorganisms such as Lactobacillus sp., Streptococcus sp. and yeasts together with pretense to make final animal feed.

Many marine wastes such as seaweeds are casted aside at the seasides. So, the objective of this study is to apply the marine wastes to the concrete. To this end, mortar and concrete tests with the marine wastes have been conducted. The results of the present mortar and concrete tests indicate that the mortar and concrete with marine wastes admixtures exhibits very low permeability. The present study provides a firm base for the use of very low permeable concrete and the application of the marine structures and the submerged structures.

Today, augmentation of industrial wastes with industrial development demands diminution and recycling technical development for industrial wastes reduction. A statistical research of industry and constructional wastes as a request of the times can achieve the conservation of resource and the protection of environment. The ultimate object of the study is not only diminution and recycling of industrial wastes but also the degree of self-sufficiency in resource and the attainment of comfortable life environment, which can the accomplish the resource circulation system and make progress into the environmentally advanced country. The object of this investigation is industrial classification, a waste discharge quantity, a waste sort, waste disposal of industrial wastes in Yeung-nam area. The investigation of special quality in industrial wastes can be used to establish a wastes management policy and a disposition method .
This study aims to make a fundamental data for a policy-making decision in treatment and disposal of municipal solid wastes and presents a research data on the discharge properties of municipal solid wastes and making a unit of them in the Taegu metropolitan city. The results can be summarized as follows; survey the discharge properties of municipal solid wastes, calorific values and to present a research-data in supplying incineration-heat of wastes with the area of Sung-seo in Taegu. So, using fundamental data for planning and running wastes-incineration plants as well as trying to make better Urban Environmental Infra-structure. The results are obtained from the study. 1) The proportion of combustible wastes in Taegu increased from 89.6% to 94.47% during 1993~2000. However, the proportion of incombustibles decreased from 10.4% to 5.53% during 1993~2000. 2) The value of representative properties is about 1500~2000kcal/kg. So we can expect that it should be made use of energy-resources positively. 3) The heat from Sung-seo wastes-incineration plants is used to produce electronic-energy for wastes-incineration plants in summer season. The heat from Sung-sea wastes-incineration plants is in charge of 27% which of supplying the area of Sung-seo with district heating energy in winter season.
