The global fashion industry produces significant carbon emission and micro-plastics in oceans. Studies on sustainable design methods as such environmental issues in fashion are becoming intensely problematic. This study conducted a case study on 100 upcycle fashion brands to propose strategical upcycle fashion designs to compete in a sustainable fashion market. A literature review indicated that 3 types of textile wastes are generated as upcycling materials: post-producer, pre-consumer and post-consumer. Wastes are categorized together with 3 types of techniques: redesigning, reconstruction and handcrafting. This research derived 7 types of upcycle fashion designs that have the following features: to make luxury upcycle fashion products, to make sustainable grunge looks, to re-evaluate deadstocks, to recover vintage clothes, to convert waste into craft-arts, to offer solutions for damaged products, and to make zero-waste small fabric waste. The study results show that key drivers in the upcycle fashion design are the redesignability of materials and technique-related costs. This study implies that adopting appropriate design features can be a useful strategy for designers. New technologies will solve current problems and encourage them to design products in a new circular value system.
This study aims to explore the unethical issues in leather processing and to develop designs of leather products based on the concept of reincarnation by ecosystem circulation. The method used in this research include the review of previous literature and the design process for development fashion accessories using waste leather. The design process comprises collecting waste leather, classifying waste leather by type, color, and size, and developing leather products according to line carnation method. For this research, the material was limited to waste cowhide leather collected from leather workshops and leather product factories. The leather pieces were divided into typical and atypical types and developed leather accessories based on the leather piece's color and size. A twill brooch, four-string bracelet, a brooch using the four-stringed leather strap and mini handbag designs were developed using regular type waste leather. An armband of abstract patterns and a cellphone case with graffiti pattern using irregular type over-splitting waste leather. The environmental issues in design are observed as part of understanding the significance of this study. Development of waste leather accessory can expand the usability of the waste leather as well as increase the product value by creating limited-line editions. By understanding the role and benefits of sustainable upcycling, this research suggests an efficient way to use waste materials in fashion to coexist with the natural environment.
Agricultural drainage salt generated during irrigation of crops in San Joaquin Valley, California exceeds 600,000 tons annually and cumulates in the field in a rapid rate. As a result, the waste is taking out more farmlands for salt storage and disposal, imposing serious concerns to environment and local agricultural industry. in searching for a potential solution to reduce or eliminate the waste, this research explored feasibility of producing a value-added product, sodium sulfate, from the waste and utilizing the product in textile dyeing. The result indicated that sodium sulfate could be produced the salt and could be purified by a recrystalization method in a temperature range within the highest and lowest daily temperatures in summer in the valley. Re recovered sodium sulfate samples, with purifies ranging from 67% to 99.91, were compard with commercially available sodium sulfate in directive dyeing of cotton fabrics. Direct Yellow 27 and direct Blue 1 had similar exhaustions among Na₂So₄Ⅰ, Na₂So₄Ⅱ, Na₂So₄Ⅲ and V which had similar ratios of sodium sulfate and sodium chloride in recovered salts. Na₂So₄Ⅳ had high exhaustion despite low ratios of sodium sulfate and sodium chloride. In direct Red 80, exhaustion depends more on the ratios of sodium sulfate and sodium chloride than sodium chloride. Na₂SO₄Ⅳ and Na₂SO₄V with high ratios of sodium chloride had more exhaustion than Na₂So₄and Na₂So₄Ⅲ with low ratios of sodium chloride. Generally, directive dyeing using recovered salts from farm drainage has similar or more excellent exhaustion than directive dyeing using commercial sodium sulfate.
New technologies or improvement of the existing technologies are required to enhance the efficiency of removal of pollutants from wastewater. In this study we attempted to produce and test the activated carbon produced from the refused tea waste for the removal of dyes from wastewater. The objectives of this investigation were to produce activated carbon from refused tea waste by chemical activation, evaluate its performance for the removal of color produced from Acid Yellow 36, and the modeling of its dye removal with the kinetic study. The activation was performed in two steps namely carbonization at $375{\pm}25^{\circ}C$ and chemical activation with HCl at $800^{\circ}C$ under the absence of Oxygen. Adsorption isotherms and kinetic studies were performed with a textile dye, Acid Yellow 36, at different concentrations (20-80 mg/L). The maximum dye removal (~90%) observed at 80 mg/L dye concentration and it reduced at low dye concentrations. Maximum adsorption (71.97 mg/g) was recorded at 96 h at $29{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. Low pH increased the dye adsorption (pH=2; 78.27 mg/g) while adsorption reduced at high pH levels indicating that the competition occurs in between OH- ions and AY36 molecules for the adsorption sites in RTAC. The Langmuir isotherm model clearly explained the dye adsorption, favorably, by RTAC. Moreover, kinetic studied performed showed that the pseudo second order kinetic model clearly describes the dye adsorption. Based on the results obtained in this study, it can be concluded that RTAC can be used for the removal of textile dyes.
Hierarchically porous carbon materials with high nitrogen functionalities are extensively studied as high-performance supercapacitor electrode materials. In this study, nitrogen-doped porous carbon textile (N-PCT) with hierarchical pore structures is prepared as an electrode material for supercapacitors from a waste cotton T-shirt (WCT). Porous carbon textile (PCT) is first prepared from WCT by two-step heat treatment of stabilization and carbonization. The PCT is then nitrogen-doped with urea at various concentrations. The obtained N-PCT is found to have multi-modal pore structures with a high specific surface area of 1,299 m2 g-1 and large total pore volume of 1.01 cm3 g-1. The N-PCT-based electrode shows excellent electrochemical performance in a 3-electrode system, such as a specific capacitance of 235 F g-1 at 1 A g-1, excellent cycling stability of 100 % at 5 A g-1 after 1,000 cycles, and a power density of 2,500 W kg-1 at an energy density of 3.593 Wh kg-1. Thus, the prepared N-PCT can be used as an electrode material for supercapacitors.
Purified cellulosic materials suitable for the production of cellulose esters can be prepared from waste cotton (carding waste from textile mill). The most desirable conditions in purifying waste cotton were obtained. Waxy materials were removed by boiling in 2-3% soda ash solution for more than 30 minutes in open vessel at atmospheric pressure. As for bleaching, it is desirable to use the bleaching powder solution containing 1%, available chlorine for 60 minutes at 35 deg. C. Purified cellulosic material was acetylated to fibrous cellulose triacetate, which was fractionated in the solution of 70% monochloroacetic acid using water as a precipitant, and the degree of polymerizaion and molecular weight of each fraction were measured viscometrically, thereon, molecular weight distribution curve was drawn. Analyzing the shape of this curve, most of the polymers were concentrated on the part of higher degree of polymerization. Purified waste cotton was also analysed, the result was that this cellulosic material can be used as a raw material for cellulose esters and ethers.
The waste gate valve (WGV) for gasoline vehicles operate in a harsh high-temperature environment. Hence, WGVs are typically made of Inconel 713C, which is a type of Ni-based superalloy. Recently, the metal injection molding (MIM) process has attracted considerable attention for parts used under high-temperature conditions. In this study, an MIM analysis for the head and other parts of the WGV is conducted using a commercial CAE program Moldflow. Further, optimal manufacturing conditions are determined by analyzing flow characteristics at various injection times and locations. Moreover, to improve the accuracy of the analysis results, we compare the actual temperature of the mold during injection processing with that observed through the analysis. As the results, metal injection patterns of analysis are well in accord with these of short shot test. And the temperature variations of analysis is also very similar with those of feedstock when metal injection molding.
In order to reduce the amount of waste water generated from textile dyeing process and processing water, cotton fabric was bleached with ozone in ozone/water contact system, and dyed. The results obtained from the measurement of whiteness, reflectance, tensile strength, color difference, and K/S value of treated samples were as follow : 1) In ozone bleaching, factors affect whiteness most are treatment time and ozone dosage. As treatment time is lengthened, whiteness increases. Futhermore, bleaching effect is high in acidic treatment, but low in alkaline treatment. 2) As bleaching goes on, maximum absorption wave length shifts to shoter wavelengths. 3) As treatment time is lengthened or pH of treatment is low, tensile strenth of treated fabric decrease. 4) In all cases, color difference of dyed cotton fabrics in above 2% o.w.f. dyestuff concentration don't go beyond 1∼2 AN unit, compared with standard.
Advances in industrial development and waste management over several decades have reduced many of the impacts that previously affected ecosystems, however, there are still processes which discharge hazardous materials into environments. Among industries that produce industrial wastewaters, textile manufacturing processes play a noticeable role. This study was conducted to test a novel continuous combined commercial membrane treatment using polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), ultrafiltration (UF), and polyamide (PA) nanofiltration (NF) membranes for textile wastewater treatment. The synthetic textile wastewater used in this study contained sodium silicate, wax, and five various reactive dyes. The results indicate that the removal efficiency for physical particles (wax and resin) was 95% through the UF membrane under optimum conditions. Applying UF and NF hybrid treatment resulted in total effective removal of dye from all synthetic samples. The efficiency of sodium silicate removal was measured to be between 2.5 to 4.5% and 13 to 16% for UF and NF, respectively. The chemical oxygen demand in all samples was reduced by more than 85% after treatment by NF.
This research offers recycling method of NaOH from mercerizing process of cotton fabric. The measuring system of NaOH concentration was designed for the mercerizing process and tested for various conditions which can be occurred in factory. The accuracy of the system was varied as the testing condition was changed. As the concentration of sulfuric acid used for titrating NaOH decreased, the accuracy of measuring system increased. The concentration of NaOH for waste water collected from mercerizing process was measured by 5.2%. As the ratio of newly mixed NaOH increased, moisture regain. water absorbency and whiteness of the specimen increased. The bending rigidity(B) and shear rigidity(G) decreased, as the ratio of newly mixed NaOH increased.
