  • Fenton's oxidation can improve the biodegradability of refractory organic wastewater by generating $OH{\cdot}$ which is one of the most reactive species. Fenton's reagent is used to treat a variety of industrial waste containing a range of toxic organic compounds. But this process cannot be economical because of high chemical cost of $H_2O_2$, ferrous ion solution and high sludge disposal cost. In this study, we proposed a modified Fenton's oxidation process which can reduce the reagent cost and obtain better removal efficiencies with less Fenton's reagents, and have a good potential of sludge recycling. In modified Fenton reaction, ferrous ion solution is adjusted to optimal pH with NaOH. Then it added to the sample and reacted to $H_2O_2$. For the experiment, synthetic wastewater made of phenol, which is one of the typical water pollutants, was used and the ionic strength of this wastewater was controlled by adding $NaHCO_3$. The effects of DO, ionic strength, and $H_2O_2$ dosing methods were investigated. As a result, modified Fenton's treatment efficiencies are better than conventional Fenton's reaction treating leachate and dyeing wastewater. And modified Fenton's treatment efficiencies combined to the sludge recycling for a half of Iron dosage are as good as the conventional Fenton's for a normal Iron dosage.

  • Struvite (MgNH4PO4 ⋅ 6H2O) and hydroxyapatite (HAP, Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2) precipitation in urine-separating toilets (NoMix toilets) causes severe maintenance problems and also reduce the phosphate and calcium content. Application of urine separating technique and extraction of by-products from human urine is a cost effective technique in waste water treatment. In this study, we extract urine calcite from human urine by batch scale method, using urease producing microbes to trigger the precipitation and calcite formation process. Extracted urine calcite (calcining at 800℃) is a potential adsorbent for removal of heavy metal(loid)s like (Cd2+, Cu2+, Ni2+, Pb2+, Zn2+ and As3+) along with additional leaching analysis of total nitrogen (T-N), phosphate (T-P) and chemical oxygen demand (COD). The transformations of calcite during synthesis were confirm by characterization using XRD, SEM-EDAX and FT-IR techniques. In additional, the phosphate leaching potential and adsorbate (nitrate) efficiency in aqueous solution was investigated using the calcinedurine calcite. The results indicate that the calcite was effectively remove heavy metal(loid)s lead up to 96.8%. In addition, the adsorption capacity (qe) of calcite was calculated and it was found to be 203.64 Pb, 110.96 Cd, 96.02 Zn, 104.2 As, 149.54 Cu and 162.68 Ni mg/g, respectively. Hence, we suggest that the calcite obtain from the human urine will be a suitable absorbent for heavy metal(loid)s removal from aqueous solution.

  • From 1 January 2020, the limit for Sulphur in fuel oil used on board ships operating outside designated emission control areas will be reduced to 0.5 %. This regulation by international maritime organization (IMO) is able to significantly reduce the amount of Sulphur oxides (SOx) discharging from ships and should have environmental advantages and health for all over the world. To meet the regulation, in these days, wet scrubber system is being actively developed. However, this process leads to make washing wastewater. In this study, we evaluated ion exchange resin system in accordance with scrubber wastewater discharge regulation by IMO. Theoretical wastewater used as feed solution of lab scale water treatment systems. The results revealed that nitrate ion was removed selectively in spite of high TDS wash wastewater solution depending on ion exchange resin property. Moreover, it was possible to improve efficiency of the system by optimizing operating conditions.

  • An experiment was conducted to separate or recover Co and Ni using Cyanex 301 from process by-products and waste resources containing Co and Ni. To separate and recover Co and Ni from simulated leaching solutions, 10 v/v% Cyanex 301 was used as an extractant in this study; Li was not extracted. At equilibrium pH 1.5 and a phase ratio (A/O) of 1.0, 0.44% of Mg and 11.57% of Mn were extracted, and more than 99% of Co and Ni were extracted. McCabe-Thiele diagram analysis confirmed that more than 99.9% of Co and Ni could be extracted simultaneously through two-stage extraction with an extraction phase ratio (A/O) of 2. It was possible to extract Mg and Mn simultaneously through the scrubbing process. In the scrubbing process, more than 99% of Mg and 87% of Mn were scrubbed using 0.05 M of H2SO4, and 99.9% of Mg and more than 80% of Mn were scrubbed using 0.05 M of HCl. In the stripping process, 93% of Co and 5% of Ni were stripped selectively by 3.0 M of H2SO4. However, when 8.0 M of HCl was used as a stripping solution, more than 99.9% of Co and more than 90% of Ni were stripped simultaneously.

  • Small scale D-water treatment plant(WTP) where has slow sand filtration was using raw water containing high concentration of manganese (> 2mg/l). The raw water was pre-chlorinated for oxidation of manganese and resulted in difficulty for filtration. Thus, sometimes manganese concentration and turbidity were over the water quality standard. Two stage rapid manganese sand filtration pilot plant which can treat $200m^3/d$ was operated to solve manganese problem in D-WTP. The removal rate of manganese and turbidity were about 38% and 84%, respectively without pH control of raw water. However, when pH of raw water was controlled to average 7.9 with NaOH solution, the removal rate of manganese and turbidity increased to 95.0% and 95.5%, respectively and the water quality of filtrate satisfied the water quality standard. Manganese content in sand was over 0.3mg/g which is Japan Water Association Guideline. The content in upper filter was 5~10 times more than that of middle and lower during an early operation but the content in middle and lower filter was increased more and more with increase of operation time. This result means that the oxidized manganese was adsorbed well in sand. Rapid manganese sand filter was backwashed periodically. The water quality of backwash wastewater was improved by sedimentation. Thus, turbidity and manganese concentration decreased from 29.4NTU to 3.09NTU and from 1.7mg/L to 0.26mg/L, respectively for one day. In Jar test of backwash wastewater with PAC(Poly-aluminum chloride), optimum dosage was 30mg/L. Because the turbidity of filtrate was high as 0.76NTU for early 5 minute after backwash, filter-to-waste should be used after backwash to prevent poor quality water.

  • A study of physical properties and their application using K-powdered activated carbon system followed powdered carbon dispersion was carried out at laboratory. scale. Two types of K-powdered activated carbon for the dispersion have been used in this study to investigate the catalytic removal efficiency of pollutants from the wastewater. From the surface properties obtained for carbon samples treated with aqueous solutions containing potassium salts, main investigations were subjected to isotherm shape, SEM, EDX and surface functional groups. K-powdered activated carbons were dispersed to wastewater with pH variation to investigate the removal efficiency for the color, COD, T-N and T-P. From these removal results of the piggery waste using K-powdered activated carbon, satisfactory removal performance in the region of pH 6~8 was achieved. The excellent effects for the dispersion of the K-powdered activated carbon were proved by the above mentioned properties of the material for adsorption and trapping of organics, and catalytic effects.

  • Cultural characteristics of Strptomyces griseolus isolated from the soil were investigated. This strain was disclosed to utilize D-xylose, and D-glactose in preference order as a carbon source with the formation of glucose isomerase. The addition of sweet potato starch also proved effective promoting the total enzyme activity measured at 29% higher than the control. Corn cob, one of waste agricultural resources, was hydrolyzed in 2~3% $H_2SO_4$ solution at $100^{\circ}C$, 3~5 hours to produce a xylose syrup which gave rise to the recovery of 19.9% in a batch system and 28.2% in a repeated system. By the addition of both 2% of xylose syrup(Be'28) prepared by and us 65% of corn steep liquor (total nitrogen 1.2%), enzyme induction was maximized. The enzyme activity was stimulated by the xylose and the cell growth by the C.S.L. Also, remarkable increase of enzyme activity was noticed by the addition of protein acid hydrolysate 86.2% higher than the control. $QO_2$ of the biomass cultured in 30L capacity jarfermentor recorded low oxygen requirement of 251.2 1/hr. Maximum activity of glucose isomerase was observed noted at the 9th hour after inoculation which is 2 hours faster than the stationery was observed noted at the 9th hour after inoculation which is 2 hours faster than the stationery phase of the biomass growth. Glucose isomerase from the strain was activated by adding the $Co^{++}\;and\;Mg^{++}$ with optimum temperature of $73^{\circ}C$ and pH of 7.2. Conversion ratio of 60% glucose to frutose was 42.5% after 70 hours reaction.

  • In this study, not only making an effort to find a solution for sewage and wastewater treatment, but also demonstrating a feasibility of wastewater disposal process which is treated with the cohesion and adsorption mechanism of sewage and wastewater using quartz porphyry and zeolite, which is a domestic natural resource. By using a jar test, we evaluated removal efficiency of $COD_{Cr}$ after reation. According to the result of experiment, when we injected 400~1,200 g/L of quartz porphyry and zeolite into a sewage as a coagulant, there was no difference of the rejection rates of $COD_{Cr}$, however, when quartz porphyry and zeolite, which were sintered at $600^{\circ}C$, were treated into urban sewage, removal efficiency of $COD_{Cr}$ had increased by about 15%, 3% respectively. In addition, we applied into a cosmetic tissue wastewater by using mixture of quartz porphyry and natural zeolite in order to analyze the applicability of other wastewater as well as Municipal Sewage.

  • In this year, Koreans have a shortage in agricultural and drinking water due to severe algal blooms generated in major lakes. Waste oyster shells were obtained from temporary storage near the workplace at which oysters were separated from their shells. Heating ($1000^{\circ}C$ for 1 h in air) was employed to convert raw oyster shell powders into calcium oxide powders that reacted efficiently with phosphorus and nitrogen to remove algal blooms from eutrophicated wastewater. As the dispersed amount of heated oyster shell powders was increased, water clarity and visual light penetration were improved. Coagulation, precipitation and carbonation process of the heated oyster shell powders in a water purifier facilitated removal of eutrophication nutrient such as phosphorus and nitrogen, which is both beneficial and economically viable. $CO_2$ implantation by carbonation treatment not only produced thermodynamically stable CaO in oyster shells to derive precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) but also accelerated algal removal by activation of coagulation and precipitation process. The use of oyster shell powders led to a mean reduction of 97% in total phosphate (T-P), a mean reduction of 91% in total nitrogen (T-N) and a maximum reduction of 51% in chemical oxygen demand (COD), compared with the total pollutant load of raw algal solution. Remarkable water quality improvement of algal removal by heated oyster shell powders and PCC carbonation treatment will allow utilization as water resources to agricultural or industrial use.
