According to the statistical data of the Ministry of Environment, 47million tons of construction waste were generated, and 96.7% of them was recycled in 2005. However, the recycled products seem to be remained under low quality. Because mixed demolition and construction waste, so called DC Waste, including concrete, brick, plaster, lumber, plastics building materials, paper and some dirt and stone, is very variable and difficult to estimate its exact composition, it is regarded as having little or no value to the construction industry. 'The Research group on recycling of construction waste' was started by the Housing & Urban Research Institute(KNHC), which is sponsored as a large scale national project by the Ministry of Construction and Transportation. This research group intends to establish recycling system through planing, processing, developing practical technology, and eventually contribute to save natural resource and to vitalize the industry. In this paper an overview of DC waste management and recycling technology is given in some detail. Particularly, "recycling law of construction waste" and recent research trends on recycling of construction waste are discussed.

The second-stage near surface disposal facility for low and very low level radioactive waste's permanent disposal is to be built. During the institutional control period, the inadvertent intrusion of the general public is limited. But after the institutional control period, the access to the general public is not restricted. Therefore human who has purpose of residence and resource exploration can intrude the disposal facility. In this case, radioactive effects to the intruder should be limited within regulatory dose limits. This study conducted the safety assessment of human intrusion on the second-stage surface disposal facility through drilling and post drilling scenario. Results of drilling and post drilling scenario were satisfied with regulatory dose limits. The result showed that post-drilling scenario was more significant than drilling scenario. According to the human intrusion time and behavior after the closure of the facility, dominant radionuclide contributing to the intruder was different. Sensitivity analyses on the parameters about the human behavior were also satisfied with regulatory dose limits. Especially, manual redistribution factor was the most sensitive parameter on exposure dose. A loading plan of spent filter waste and dry active waste was more effective than a loading plan of spent filter waste and other wastes for the radiological point of view. These results can be expected to provide both robustness and defense in depth for the development of safety case further.
An experimental study was carried out to investigate the recycling possibility of waste oyster shells, which induce environmental pollutions by piling up out at the open or the temporary reclamation. The purpose of this study is to develope eco-friendly binder using waste oyster shells, and to reinforce dredged soils fur soft soil improvement. In this paper, a series of laboratory tests including compressive strength tests were performed to evaluate strength characteristics of soils treated by developed binder with different water content of dredged soils, mixing rates of binder, curing days. Based on test results, eco-friendly binders manufactured from waste oyster shells were estimated as good resource materials for soft soil improvements.
Concrete is the most widely used building material all over the world, because of its many technical and economic qualities. This pressure on the concrete resource causes an intensive exploitation of the quarries of aggregates, which results in a exhaustion of these and environmental problems. That is why recycling and valorization of materials are considered as future solutions, to fill the deficit between production and consumption and to protect the environment. This study is part of the valorization process of local materials, which aims to reuse marble waste as fine aggregate (excess loads of marble waste exposed to bad weather conditions) available in the marble quarry of Fil-fila (Skikda, East of Algeria) in the manufacture of self-compacting concretes. It consists of introducing the marble waste as sand into the self-compacting concrete formulation, with variable percentages (25%, 50%, 75% and 100%) and to study the development of its properties both in fresh state (air content, density, slump flow, V-funnel, L-box and sieve stability) as well as the hardened one (compressive strength and flexural strength). The results obtained showed us that marble wastes can be used as sand in the manufacture of self compacting concretes.
Copper oxychloride used as an agricultural fungicide has been recovered from copper-containing waste etchant by the neutralization with alkali hydroxides. Large amount of copper-containing waste etchant is generated from Printed Circuit Board industry. In an environmental and economic point of view, retrieve of the valuable natural resource from the waste is important. Recycling process of copper oxychloride from the waste etchant is discovered through the our study. In the range of reaction temp. 2$0^{\circ}C$-4$0^{\circ}C$, pH 5-7, pure copper oxychloride was able to prepare and the yield of copper oxychloride was higher than 95%. Physical properties of the sample have been characterized using SEM, XRD, TGA, ICP and Atomic absorption spectroscopy.
Despite the enormous technical and economic efforts to improve environmental conditions, currently about 40% of the global population (or 2 billion people) are still lack access to safe water supply and adequate sanitation facilities. Pollution problems and transmission of water- related diseases will continue to proliferate. The rapid population growth and industrialization will lead to a reduction of arable land, thus exacerbating the food shortage problems and threatening environmental sustainability. Natural systems in this context are a transdisciplinary approach which employs the activities of microbes, soil and/or plants in waste stabilisation and resource recovery without the aid of mechanical or energy-intensive equipments. Examples of these natural systems are: waste stabilisation ponds, aquatic weed ponds, constructed wetlands and land treatment processes. Although they require relatively large land areas, the natural systems could achieve a high degree of waste stabilisation and at the same time, yield potentials for waste recycling through the production of algal protein, fish, crops, and plant biomass. Because of the complex interactions occurring in the natural systems, the existing design procedures are based mainly on empirical or field experience approaches. An integrated kinetic model encompassing the activities of both suspended and biofilm bacteria and some important engineering parameters has been developed which could predict the organic matter degradation in the natural systems satisfactorily.

The development of diesel power generation is predominantly geared toward island areas or ships because diesel exhibits weak scale-merit characteristics and power quality problems, which are associated with environmental pollution. However, a new energy paradigm, distribution energy resource (DER), has been emerging as a renewable energy source due to the existing structural problems in waste disposal and complex factors such as the conversion technology of waste emulsified oil (WDF). By combining extended producer responsibility (EPR) support and renewable energy certificates (REC), including waste energy REC 0.25 for other bioenergy and REC 1.0 for power transactions, an adequate profit model can be built through self-energetic power generation, thereby drawing keen attention from related industries. Therefore, if WDF is used appropriately as a high-quality engine fuel, it can lead to the development of various fields such as novel renewable energy sectors, waste management, and EPR-related industries. This study is intended to produce WDF using plastic waste by using it as engine-generator fuel. Moreover, we investigate ways to improve the quality and suitability of WDF as an engine fuel.
Since improper management practices of solid medical waste (SMW) could potentially result in serious health risks and environmental problems, it is very important to properly treat and dispose of the medical wastes. In this study, current practices of SMW management from storage to final disposal stage in 12 health care facilities (HCFs) of Burundi were investigated using the official government reports. The results showed that 75% and 92% of HCFs used uncovered wheelbarrows and trucks for on-site or off-site SMW transportation, respectively, indicating that most transportation equipment and waste workers are not safely protected. The results also showed that 92.8% of SMW (15,736.4 ton) from all 12 HCFs were inappropriately disposed of through uncontrolled land disposal and incineration. If pharmaceutical wastes and discarded medical plastics (29.5% of SMW) can be separated and treated properly, the treatment costs can be reduced and resource savings can be achieved. Raising awareness of healthcare workers and general public about potential health effects arising from improper SMW management, sufficient financial and human resources for the treatment facilities (especially incinerators), and effective regulations and guidelines for transportation and treatment of SWM are some of the major tasks for safe and sustainable medical waste management in Burundi.
The use of renewable energy sources is becoming increasingly necessary to minimize the problems derived from the global warming impacts caused by the utilization of fossil fuels as well as their limited supply and reservoir. Also, localized heavy rain has occurred in many areas. As a result, suspended wood waste is being inflow into the dam and the problem of waste disposal has occurred. It is a unique renewable and alternative source for the production of energy. The experiment using wood waste (dry weight 25.0g) was conducted for extraction sugars such as xylose, lactose and glucose. For the sugar extraction from wood waste, hydrolysis experiment using wood waste was conducted by two steps. First step was reacted with 72% sulfuric acid (24.0N and 37.5 ml) for 1hr at $30^{\circ}C$ and second step was reacted at $105^{\circ}C$ for one hour after adding 2.45times of hot water. Extracted sugar was used in the experiment of sugar consumption to estimate feasibility of ethanol production using yeast(P. Stipitis and S cerevisiae). As a result, sugar extracted from wood waste was effective consumed by yeast(P. Stipitis and S cerevisiae). The consumption rate by yeast was S. cerevisiae was faster than that of P. stipitis. It can be confirmed that resource as ethanol production using wood waste was available.

The experiment was carried out to determine the optimum application rate of liquid waste from methane fermentation (LW) and its effect on botanical composition, dry matter yields and nutrient quality of pasture mixtures. Experimental fields was designed as a randomized block treated with NPK chemical fertilizer (NPK = 28-20-24 kg/lOa), NPK + Water 28 ton, 112 NPK + LW 28 ton, 112 NPK + LW 42 ton, LW 28 ton, LW 42 ton and LW 56 ton/lOa at Livestock Experiment Station in Suweon, 1985. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. Vegetation of introduced pastures, both in grasses and legumes, was markedly increased in the plots treated with methane-liquid waste. However, heavy application of liquid waste tended to increase of native weeds such as Polygronum spp., Rumex spp. and Lactuca spp. 2. Crude protein contents was increased in the plants applied with liquid waste, but NFE was decreased compared with those of chemical fertilizer applied. The concentrations of crude fat and crude fibre were, however less affected by the fertilizer resource. Among cell-wall constituents, cellulose content was decreased as the liquid waste application rate increased, while hemicellulose showed a negative association. 3. Productivity of the pasture was increased as the liquid waste application rate increased. The highest dry matter yields was obtained in the plot treated with LW 42 ton/lOa by 71 1 kg/lOa, which shows about 71% increments compared with those of chemical fertilizer treated. Net energy yields, both in starch value and NEL, were also markedly increased under liquid waste application. As a results, the optimum application rate of methane-liquid waste was found to be 42 ton in 10 a.
