Analysis of cause of engine failure during power generation using biogas in sewage treatment plant (하수처리장 바이오가스를 이용한 발전시 가스엔진의 고장원인 분석)

  • In this study, we analyzed the causes of major faults in the biogas plant through the case of gas engine failure when cogenerating electricity and heat using biogas as a fuel in the actual sewage treatment plant and suggested countermeasures. Hydrogen sulfide in the biogas entering the biogas engine and water caused by intermittent malfunction of the water removal system caused intercooler corrosion in the biogas engine. In addition, the siloxane in the biogas forms a silicate compound with silicon dioxide, which causes scratches and wear of the piston surface and the inner wall of the cylinder liner. The substances attached to the combustion chamber and the exhaust system were analyzed to be combined with hydrogen sulfide and other impurities. It is believed that hydrogen sulfide was supplied to the desulfurization plant for a long period of time because of the high content of hydrogen sulfide (more than 50ppm) in the biogas and the hydrogen sulfide was introduced into the engine due to the decrease of the removal efficiency due to the breakthrough point of the activated carbon in the desulfurization plant. In addition, the hydrogen sulfide degrades the function of the activated carbon for siloxane removal of the adsorption column, which is considered to be caused by the introduction of unremoved siloxane waste into the engine, resulting in various types of engine failure. Therefore, hydrogen sulfide, siloxane, and water can be regarded as the main causes of the failure of the biogas engine. Among them, hydrogen sulfide reacts with other materials causing failure and can be regarded as a substance having a great influence on the pretreatment process. As a result, optimization of $H_2S$ removal method seems to be an essential measure for stable operation of the biogas engine.

Ring Shear Characteristics of Waste Rock Materials in Terms of Water Leakage (누수유무에 따른 광산폐석의 링전단특성)

  • Shear characteristics of soils can be investigated using various types of shear stress measuring apparatus. Ring shear tests are often applied for examining the residual shear strength under the unlimited deformation. This paper presents drainage-consolidation-shear velocity dependent undrained shear strengths measured in terms of water leakage. A series of ring shear tests were performed under the constant normal stress (50 kPa) and controled shear velocity ranging from 0.01~1 mm/sec under the undrained condition. As a result, undrained shear strengths are dependent on shear velocity. It exhibits that straining hardening behavior is observed for the shear velocity lower than 0.1 mm/sec; however, the strain softening behavior is observed for the shear velocity higher than 0.1 mm/sec. Water leakage can cause the increase in shear stress irrespective of shear velocity. Shear stress increases with increasing amount of water leakage. It is due to the fact that the small grains and water flow out through the rubble edge in the ring shear box. Repetitive saturation and consolidation processes may minimize the error.

Trends of Study and Classification of Literatures on Environmental Pollution in Korea (우리나라에서의 환경오염 관련 문헌분류 및 연구동향)

  • The purpose of this study is to provide the valuable basic information that helps set the advanced direction of study in environmental pollution in the future. It classifies and analyzes 6, 531 papers according to their years, fields, and contents from 1962 to 1993 in Korea through Chunrian, a PC communication network, National Environment Research Institute(1989) in Seoul. Classifying papers by their fields, this study shows 19.6%(1, 281 papers) of total papers on water pollution, on which most emphasis was placed in the studies, 17.2%(1, 121 papers) on general remarks, 14.6%(952 papers) on environmental ecology, and 13.6%(891 papers) on air pollution. Classifying papers by their contents, this study tells us that the survey of state and evaluation of pollution degree took 28%(1, 829 papers) of total papers, and it seemed the most active study was carried out on this content. It then shows us that the treatment technology and mechanism shared 17.5%(1, 144 papers), and facilities and design took 1.9%(127 papers) which needed more studies in the future. As for the trends of study, the papers published until 1979 show that the water pollution accounted for 28.9% of total studies, on which the greatest emphasis was placed, while the papers in 1990s tell us that general remarks 34.7%, air pollution 14.9%, and water pollution 14.1%. It also shows that treatment technology and mechanism has had more importance since 1980s in water pollution, noise and vibration, waste materials, human wastes, and radioactive pollution. However, in sea pollution, policy and standard rather than treatment technology or method of measurement and analysis has been considered a more important one in 1990s. Analyzing the studies on general remarks, it tell us that the paper on environmental act, which were frequently conducted, accounted for 33.3% until 1979, while the papers on the environmental policy, in which the highest interest was kept, accounted 34.6% in 1990s. This study concludes that most papers had examined the survey on status and evaluation of pollution degree before 1980, while studies on solving the problems of environmental pollution have had more importance in the 1980s and 1990s. Therefore, in the future, more studies should be conducted actively on policy development to solve the problems of environment pollution as well as on encouragement of environmental consciousness.

Study on $CaCO_3$ Preparation from MSWI Fly Ash (생활쓰레기 소각(燒却)비산재로부터 $CaCO_3$ 제조(製造)에 관한 연구(硏究))

  • The total amount of ash generated from the municipal solid waste incineration(MSWI) in Korea was approximately 420,000 tons in 2005 including 68,000 tons of fly ash. Fly ash from MSWI generally contains high amount of CaO (upto ${\sim}50%$) due to the treatment of flue gas by spraying CaO-base materials. Currently, most of fly ash generated is finally ended up with specially designed landfill sites and only less then 20% of fly ash is recycled. In the present work, preparation of $CaCO_3$ from the MSWI ny ash was studied to promote the fly ash recycling. Fly ash obtained from the dust collector in stoker-type MSWI is used to selectively dissolve CaO by using the sugar solution. Then, $CO_2$ gas was passed through the dissolved solution to pro- duce $CaCO_3$ powder. The optimum conditions for CaO dissolution were solid content 10%, reaction time 15 minutes, sugar concentration $10{\sim}15%\;and\;pH\;10.5{\sim}11.0$. The high grade $CaCO_3$ powder was obtained and the experimental conditions are also discussed.

Immobilization of Nitrifier Consortium for the Removal of Ammonium Ion in the Recirculating Aquaculture System (양어장수내의 암모니아성 질소제거를 위한 질화세균군의 고정화)

  • The immobilization of a microorganism has been rapidly progressed with the development of biotechnology in recent years. Although it has been used as a tool to isolate products from biological media in various areas, it has not yet been practiced in the treatment of waste water. In this paper, we suggest a possibility to apply the immobilization technique In the recirculating aquaculture system. We examined the ability of $NH_4^+$ removal by nitrifier consortium immobilized in $Ba^{++}-alginate$, k-carrageenan and agar bead at the concentration of 50 g/L, respectively. In order to use the immobilized nitrifier consortium as media in the fludized bed reactor, the strength of bead was measured. $Ba^{++}-alginate$ as a support material showed higher strength of bead. Also, the nitrifier consortium immobilized in $Ba^{++}-alginate$ showed higher nitrification activity that could remove 20 mg/L ammonium ion than those immobilized in other two support materials, carrageenan and agar. The immobilized nitrifier consortium showed better nitrification activity than free nitrifier consortium.

Experiment of Reactive Media Selection for the Permeable Reactive Barrier Treating Groundwater contaminated by Acid Mine Drainage (산성광산배수로 오염된 지하수 정화용 투수성 반응벽체 반응매질 선정 기초실험)

  • The batch tests were performed to evaluate the applicability of the permeable reactive barrier (PRB) to in-situ treatment of groundwater with high concentration of heavy metals. The lead\chates used in this study were collected from waste rock dump of the Imgy mine, and have a low pH and high metal concentration. The acidity loading was 65kg as $CaCO_3/day$, metal loading of Fe+Al+Mn was 11.6kg/day. This type of water could be treated with biological-mediated sulfate reduction using the organic carbon mixture as a reactive media. The batch tests were carried out with five mixtures that were composed with different mixing ratios of mushroom compost, pine-tree bark, and limestone cheep. Results indicated that the PRB could reduce the acidity loading $CaCO_3/day$ to 12.3kg and reduce the metal loading to 3.3kg/day. Considering about the low pH and high metal loading, the contaminated water may be ameliorated by passing it through the buffering PRB composed with inorganic carbonate materials and then through the PRB composed with the organic carbon mixture which can induce sulfate reduction.

A Fundamental Study on the Adsorption Capacity of Heavy Metals by Earthworms Cast (지렁이 분변토의 중금속흡착능에 관한 기초연구)

  • The purpose of this study is the evaluation of adsorption capacity of casts for heavy metals comparing with the activated carbon. The casts was obtained from vermicomposting of the mixed organic sludges which were generated from the treatment facilities for leather wastewater and cattle wastewater. The physico-chemical characteristics of cast was investigated. Also, the batch adsorption experiments of cast and activated carbon for heavy metals were carried out, and the results were analyzed by Freundlich isotherm. The buffering capacity to the acidic wastewater was founded in the cast, and the cation exchange capacity of cast impling adsorption capacity for soluble substances was evaluated as about 55me/100g. Those were implied that the cast have a large potential as a good adsorbent for soluble pollutants in wastewater. From the results of batch experiments, the removal efficiencies of tested various heavy metals including Pb, Cu, Cd, and Cr were very high value as 89-98% for the activated car-bon, and 80~95% for the casts except for Zn. The adsorption equilibriums for the two materials were achieved within 90 minutes. The order of preferable metals in the adsorption was found to be Pb>Cu>Cd>Cr>Zn on the cast and to be Pb>Cd>Cu>Cr>Zn on the activated carbon, respectively. From the above results, it might be con-cluded that cast is effectively available as a good adsorbent to treating the heavy metal bearing wastewater.

Evaluation on the Effect of Depth Buried Pipeline and Refilling Materials on Pavement Performance (도로하부 매설관의 매설심도 및 되메우기 재료가 포장체에 미치는 영향 평가)

  • PURPOSES : Compared to the criteria from advanced countries, Korea has conservative criteria for the buried depth of pipeline (about 30~70cm deeper) causing the waste of cost and time. Therefore, this research investigated the effect of various buried depths of pipeline on pavement performance in order to modify the criteria to be safe but economical. In addition, a recycled aggregate which is effective in economical and environmental aspect was evaluated to be used as a refilling material. METHODS : In this study, total 10 pilot sections which are composed with various combinations of pavement structure, buried depth of pipeline, and refilling material were constructed and the telecom cable was utilized as a buried pipeline. During construction, LFWD (Light Falling Weight Deflectometer) tests were conducted on each layer to measure the structural capacity of underlying layers. After the construction is completed, FWD (Falling Weight Deflectometer) tests and moving load tests were performed on top of the asphalt pavement surface. RESULTS : It was found from the LFWD and FWD test results that as the buried depth decrease, the deflections in subbase and surface layer were increased by 30% and 5~10%, respectively, but the deflection in base layer remained the same. In the moving load test, the longitudinal maximum strain was increased by 30% for 120mm of buried depth case and 5% for 100mm of buried depth case. Regarding the effect of refilling material, it was observed that the deflections in subbase and surface layer were 10% lager in recycled aggregate compared to the sand material. CONCLUSIONS : Based on the testing results, it was found that the change in buried depth and refiliing material would not significantly affect the pavement performance. However, it is noted that the final conclusion should be made based on an intensive structural analysis for the pavement under realistic conditions (i.e., repeated loading and environmental loading) along with the field test results.

  • Ce-pyrochlore (CaCe $Ti_2 $O_7)was synthesized to study its properties and phase relations in CaO-Ce $O_2$-Ti $O_2$ system because Ce-pyrochlore was known as a promising material for the immobilization of radioactive actinide. The samples were prepared from the high purity starling materials under the pressure of 200~400 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ at room temperature, and annealed at 1000~ 150$0^{\circ}C$. The Synthesized samples were analysed and indentified with XRD and SEM/EDS methods. The optimal formation condition of Ce-pyrochlore was at 130$0^{\circ}C$ under $O_2$ atmosphere and the chemical composition of it wasCa$Ca_{1-x}Ti_{2-y}O_{7-x-2y}$(x=0.03-0.05, y=0.02~0.04) At temperature between 130$0^{\circ}C$ 140$0^{\circ}C$, Ce-pyrochlore underwent rapidly the incongruent decomposition to perovskite. Ce-perovskite, a partial solid solution between perovskite and loparite (C $e_{0.66}$Ti $O_3$), was observed as a major phase above 140$0^{\circ}C$.>.

Determination of radiolysis products in Tri-Octyl Amine by high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometer (HPLC-MS에 의한 Tri-Octyl Amine(TOA)의 방사선 분해산물 정량)

  • Tri-octyl amine (TOA) is used in solvent extraction process for radioactive waste. This compound may be degraded to di-octyl amine (DOA), mono-octyl amine (MOA) by radioactive materials. Amount of TOA, DOA and MOA in TOA must be monitored because they production of these compounds means degradation of which leads to a decrease in the extraction yield. Retention behavior for TOA, DOA and MOA are studied with Phenomenex LUNA-$C_{18}$ ($4.6mm{\times}25cm$) analytical column and $CH_3OH:H_2O$ (50 mmol $CH_3COONH_4$) eluent by liquid chromatography. Optimum condition for these compounds is $CH_3OH:H_2O$ (50 mmol $CH_3COONH_4$) = 85 : 15 ratio. TOA, DOA and MOA compounds is well separated within 20 minute. Dynamic range is $30{\sim}160{\mu}g/mL$ for TOA, $5{\sim}100{\mu}g/mL$ for DOA and $0.1{\sim}5{\mu}g/mL$ for MOA, respectively. The detection limit are $0.1{\mu}g/mL$ for TOA, $1{\mu}g/mL$ for DOA (in SCAN mode) and $0.1{\mu}g/mL$ for MOA (in SIM mode) in this system with $20{\mu}L$ sample loop.
