  • The purpose of this study is to examine the consolidation characteristics of waste landfill from sodium carbonate production. The waste lime is a byproduct from the production of soda ash. The consolidation settlement of waste lime landfill was determined for waste lime specimen which obtained from the field boring. The consolidation tests are conducted for determination of the primary and secondary consolidation settlements. The waste lime is classified as an organic soil with high plasticity. As a result of an organic content test, the contents of organic matter in waste lime is much higher than that of normal clay. Finally, the total consolidation settlement of waste lime landfill is calculated by using a theoretical method and computer program for the given initial void ratio, compression index, and embankment height.

  • As the size of our industry and population inclose, the byproducts such as municipal solid wastes, industrial wastes are in the increasing phase. The treatment of such things is rising as a social problem. Today, the final disposal of these wastes depends mostly on the landfill, and the sanitary landfill is required and designed for preventing soil and groundwater contamination. Clays have been used for a liner material of a sanitary landfill, however, the high quality clay is hard to come by and quite expensive as a lining material in our country. Using the waste lime produced abundantly every year from chemical processes was studied here, made from the proper mixing of the bentonite and the waste lime meets the regulations from the USEPA. The soil property index tests (sieve analysis, specific gravity test Atterberg limit test) were performed, and at last to confirm the sorption characteristics of the bentonite and the waste lime the sorption isotherm equilibrium test and the sorption isotherm were performed with Toluene and Ethylbenzene which are the main components of the leachate from the landfill.

  • Recycling of$\boxUl$ useful industrial waste is highly recommended by the government. Some geotechnical properties such as specific gravity, dry density, unconfined compressive strength, pH. compressibility, permeability were determined to evaluate the feasibility of waste lime use in the landfill as an admixture clay liner. Various types of environmental tests on waste lime were conducted to compare the results with the EPA requirements. Laboratory test results indicate that admixture soil(waste lime/decomposed granite soil) is a promising material its an admixture clay liner in the sanitary landfill.

  • The purpose of this research is to develop an amended clay liner by utilizing waste lime produced as a by-product in chemical industries. Waste lime contains various kinds of organics which affect the permeability, compactability, and unconfined compressive strengths of soil. The geotechnical engineering properties of waste were improved by adding other materials so that they might meet the EPA requirement of clay liner. Granite weathered soil, which is abundant in Korea and can be obtained easily in the field. was used as a primary additive to improve geotechnical engineering properties of waste lime. Various kinds of laboratory tests related to geotecnnical engineering properties, required to evaluate the design criteria for the clay liner in the solid waste landfill. were carried out by changing miRing ratio of waste lime with additive. According to the laboratory test results, in order to obtain the appropriate amended clay liner. the effective miffing ratio of waste lime in granite weathered soil was proved to be about 20~30%.

  • Recently, the reclamation of public waters has been on a downward trend due to environmental problems, but there is a limitation to evaluating environmental characteristics index uniformly. In this study, the stability of settlement behavior on public waters reclaimed land was analyzed using the experimental test. From the primary consolidation influence factors, the characteristics of the waste lime was similar that of clay in process of consolidation. Assuming that the waste lime landfill is the layer reinforced with thin geosynthetic reinforcement, the settlement was predicted by calculating the amount of increase using the Westergaard method. As a result of predicting settlement with degree of consolidation, it was found that the increase in stress was reduced by 40% when the surface layer of the soft ground was reinforce with geotextiles compared to the case where it was not reinforced. In addition, the consolidation behavior characteristics of clay and waste lime were compared using the correlation between the plasticity index and internal friction angle of waste lime. Since the waste lime in the public process of consolidation, it was predicted that long-term settlement will increase further.

  • The feasibility of using waste lime, which is produced as a byproduct during the manufacture of sodium carbonate in Inchon, Korea. as a stabilization admixture with weathered granite soil was investigated. Laboratory tests were conducted to determine the chemical composition, pH, compaction characteristics, unconfined compression strength. X-ray diffraction analysis of waste lime and weathered granite soil admixtures. Based on the present tests, it appears that the admixtures are environmentally safe and can be used as landfill material.

  • The applicability of marine clay and banking material as landfill liner and supporting layer was examined, where additives (cement, lime, Mg0, bentonite and ESCA) were mixed with these soils. The mixtures were tested for the unconfined compressive strength, bending strength, permeability, and better results than existing solidifying agents were obtained. The freezing-thawing test is under way.

  • In this study, to examine the applicability of the lime sludge as a landfill liner, 1) the geoechnical characteristics of sludge, 2) the characteristics of migrations of contaminants, and 3) the characteristic of leaching in the batch leaching test are investigated As a result, the hydraulic conductivity(K) of the lime sludge was found out to have 10 times lower hydraulic conductivity than the maximum allowable hydraulic conductivity of the liner Retardations of heavy metals(Cu, Pb) were found out to be higher than that of organic(phenol) due to the high pH(>11.0) of 4he lime sludge. As a result of the leaching test. the concentrations of Pb and Cu were found to be close to allowable limitation, so that they need to be kept in constant watch.

  • This paper presents the results of the geotechnical investigation and settlement analysis of a finished waste landfill to find the possibility of the site as a construction area. Also, the variations of the strength of the municipal waste after mixing with the several types of the particulate grouts are investigated. The materials of the grouts used in the experiment are Quick Lime, Portland Cement, Slag Cement and Geocrete Cement. The results of the geotechnical investigation show that the maximum dry unit weight of the waste becomes lower and optimum moisture content higher as the age of the disposed waste is younger and the organic content is higher. The thickness of the predicted differential settlements of the waste fill has large difference from location to location and the unconfined compression strength of the grout mixed waste from the experiment was higher in the order of Geocrete Cement, Slag Cement, Portland Cement and Quick Lime.
