  • An efficient management system of mercury-containing waste was designed by reviewing the management and treatment of spent fluorescent lamp in Korea and foreign countries. According to Waste Management Act in Korea, mercury-containing wastes from households are classified as municipal solid wastes even though mercury-containing wastes pose hazardous risks. In general, hence, mercury-containing wastes from households are not being managed properly because those wastes from households were not classified as specific wastes (or hazardous wastes). Some mercury-containing wastes are managed as a mandatory target item in waste charge system and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) system under Act on Promotion for Saving and Recycling of Resources. An efficient management plan of mercury-containing wastes can be derived with an improved collection system, designating disposal sites and advanced treatment facilities for spent fluorescent lamps. Finally, the role of each agent involved from collection to disposal of mercury-containing wastes was suggested to establish the efficient management system for mercury-containing waste.

  • Selection of appropriate liner type would be the most important factor to prevent groundwater contamination by leachate from waste management site. This report introduces the IWEM (Industrial Waste Management Evaluation Model) developed by US EPA to evaluate the potential pollution of groundwater under the waste management unit and to suggest an appropriate type of liner, and provides with the results of IWEM application to a coal-ash landfill site in Korea as a case study. IWEM uses a standard method using a database, a decision-making process based on site characteristics, and the user-friendly input-and-output system. Authors evaluate this model to be applicable in Korea provided that the database is replaced into local data.

  • The planning and application of new developments in management of wastes. in hog farming is required to minimise the gaseous emissions from wastes and pollution of the aquatic environment. These strategies are enveloped in the "Farm Waste Management Plan" which identifies areas of the waste assets in form of plant nutrient and considers optimal manute collecting and storing procedures. The storage volumes for environmentally acceptable manure treatments and application methods are suggested. Good Waste Management Planning together with appropriate system design will ensure safe, reliable and effective waste handling.

  • Indonesian Ministry of Environment estimates that each year 170 cities and regencies in Indonesia produce 45,764,354.30 $m^3$ or approximately 11,441,091.08 ton of solid waste. Unfortunately, unsustainable management system has created a severe waste problem, hazardous to health and environment. This paper deals with the problem and offers some solutions. They are 3R (Reduce Reuse and Recycle), waste-to-energy concept and landfill gas (LFG) utilization. While 3R policy has been adopted by the government, the remaining two technologies are still dormant. Thus the paper provides a complete yet compact analysis of technology, economics, and environment aspect of waste-to-energy and LFG. Given the facts of waste production and management in Indonesia, the purpose is to encourage Government of Indonesia and other stake holders (including international community) to explore and exploit this potential. Potential of reducing waste negative externality while receiving extra revenue. Two bird with a stone.

  • Now, in a domestic country, the rebuilding and redevelopment of existing houses has been rapidly increasing with an economic growth and the improvement of living condition. As a result of that, a lot of C&D waste has been also produced. Nevertheless, it is not easy to find the research results for appropriate treatment and management of C&D waste in domestic. Therefore this study suggests the optimum deconstruction management system for minimizing construction waste and increasing reuse or recycle rate of material different from traditional demolition. The system makes it possible to plan and manage in advance quantity of C&D waste, demolition methods of each structural elements and application methods of produced C&D waste through an integrated and computerized system. The purpose of the system is ultimately to contribute to minimizing environmental damages and reducing construction waste quantity of a country. This system is largely composed of four modules such as planning of preliminary demolition survey, estimating of demolition quantity, planning of demolition schedule and planning of construction waste management and each module can be also used individually according to the purpose of a user.

  • Since the import ban of plastic waste in China has been enforced, plastic wastes were not properly collected and recycled in Korea. Hence, the management strategies for plastic waste in Korea should be improved by examining the regulations and policy in developed countries such as United States, Japan, EU and United Kingdom. The management strategy for the recycling cycle should be implemented to expand the labeling system of separation and discharge, reduce the consumption of plastic products, automate the separation and sorting method in recycling facilities, and improve the economical efficiency of the recycling cycle. The concept of residual waste (secondary waste) in the material flow analysis should be implemented to identify the shortage point in the plastic waste stream. Finally, the cooperation with international communities is required for a transboundary movement of plastic waste, which includes participation at the working group of international standards to recycle plastic waste.

  • China is experiencing the urbanization at an unprecedented speed and scale in human history. The continuing growth of China's big cities, both in city land and population, has already led to great challenges in China's urban planning and construction activities, such as the continuous increase of construction and demolition (C&D) waste. Therefore, how to characterize cities' construction activities, particularly dynamically quantify the flows of building materials and construction debris, has become a pressing problem to alleviate the current shortage of resources and realize urban sustainable development. Accordingly, this study is designed to employ 4D-GIS (four dimensions-Geographic Information System) and Internet Plus to offer new approach for accurate but dynamic C&D waste management. The present study established a spatio-temporal pattern and material metabolism evolution model to characterize the geo-distribution of C&D waste by combing material flow analysis (MFA) and 4D-GIS. In addition, this study developed a mobile application (APP) for C&D waste trading and information management, which could be more effective for stakeholders to obtain useful information. Moreover, a cloud database was built in the APP to disclose the flows of C&D waste by the monitoring information from vehicles at regional level. To summarize, these findings could provide basic data and management methods for the supply and reverse supply of building materials. Meanwhile, the methodologies are practical to C&D waste management and beyond.

  • Recently environmental pollution and resource depletion have been rapidly progressing in the world. Construction Industries discharge tones of wastes and consumes heavy resource as compared with the production activities of other industries, so it is the main reason of increasing of the Earth's environment. In Korea, as people become aware of the need of technical and institutional infrastructure for the recycling of construction wastes, they manage Allbraro system which is Total Management System in the wastes. Therefore, they promote the handling of standardized information, processing construction waste of transparency procure and promotion of the efficiency of task about the disposal of occurrence and movement of real-time construction waste. However, objective information for dismantling building did not construct in the organization of the system, so the emission of system randomly produces and discharges information of the waste. Because of that reasons, the exact value of waste abandonment is difficult to measure and recycling after waste disposal has the limit point. Therefore, in this study, advantages and disadvantages of the existing waste management system are analyzed, and we improved solution of construction building and environment of the city when BIM / GIS are utilized.

  • This study aims to provide a program for the municipal solid waste collection and transportation management through data consolidation and field research of the materials about waste collection and transportation in a small city. The field research was conducted in the collection zone of the housing, apartment and business section within C city area. As a result, the main factor of collection and transportation plan required at the waste collection and transportation process and the central mean applying at the small city were calculated. The process that systemize the waste collection and transportation step and the expert system were constructed. In conclusion, the developed management system of the municipal solid waste collection and transportation can be wildly used by adding the data of other zone.
